i'm so happy to have wyckoff starr in the neighborhood. aside from a couple of colombian joints, it serves the only decent coffee in bushwick. it's owned by the same people who run northeast kingdom down the block, so it keeps NEK in strong coffee too-- hooray!
the pros: right next to the jefferson L train, opens early in the morning, always good music, a fun map on the wall on which you can stick a pushpin in your hometown, BONKERS chocolate-chip banana bread, the nytimes daily, a great community spot-- very bushwick-centric with lots of flyers for small-scale local art projects/performances/etc. it makes me proud to live in such a creative and ambitious area. also, i've always had good experiences with the staff. they're not always warm and fuzzy but they're not dongs, either... i don't care, they are just charging me for coffee!
cons: hardly any room to sit inside. people tend to "park" when they get one of the few seats, so don't plan to linger with your beverage. this is pretty much just a "to go" place. also, tons of bike theft on this block. if you lock up, try not to park your bike out of your sight!
I live right up the street and occasionally stop in at this coffee joint for my morning (afternoon) fix. The coffee itself is fine. Large hot = $1.95. Large iced = $2.50. They have a small selection of pastries and sandwiches; I've only ever messed with the bagels, which are good with a little cream cheese or pb&j.
I really just don't like any of the "baristas" at this spot. Everyone behind the counter acts too good for their job and like they're doing me a favor for getting my order. I mean, the service is better at the Dunkin Donuts up by Dekalb. Here's a tip. Smile and ask how I'm doing rather than staring at me blankly making me wonder if it's okay to order. Then maybe I'd think about throwing a buck into your tip can.
Now that summer is here, I will be stopping by for their delicious iced coffee. The place is small, I have never sat down inside. They do have a nice little seating area outside. The staff is well...okay for the most part, but not quite all there. The price is a tad high, but I like their brew, so I'll go along with it.
Nothing too special, but it has a convenient location and they have the essential basics down.
Nothing special or memorable, but I live along the Jefferson L stop, so this is my go-to. Some wacky-flavored muffins that I've never felt confident about trying. But some day.
Right by my train stop, I still keep forgetting Wyckoff Starr is there! It's tiny, cute and the only coffee shop of it's kind in the neighborhood. When I do remember to stop by I find the coffee really good, at least the soy lattes I order. Like some other yelpers, I have never gotten a smile from the baristas either. This may be understandable however as one time I inadvertently spilled my entire hot latte in the store (there was a lid malfunction), then I made the mistake of using napkins to try to mop it up while apologizing profusely thus committing a serious 'green' sin. I can understand if they don't want to smile at me after that, I'll still come by for good lattes when I remember they exist though.
That wasn't a macchiato...just a couple of shots of espresso. But thank you anyway, it was lovely.
Good little coffee joint in a great location. Right outside the Starr St entrance for the Jefferson L stop, and 1/2 block in the other direction to the Jefferson St. entrance, its great for grabbing a cup of joe before hopping on the train.
Service is always quick despite what may appear to be a packed shop. The place is small, with a little shelf to the left, 2-3 tables on the right, and the fixin table next to the door (for all your covers, sugar, and cup condoms), there are frequently traffic jams. Warmer months, the sidewalk benches and chairs fill up quick.
The prices are kinda steep, but not $tarbux steep. One recommendation: always get a size larger than what you think you want, and remember not to drink it down to the last drop since you'll get a mouthful of grinds. Major buzzkill every time!
I live in industrial Bushwick, a bit closer to the Archive coffee shop so it was a while before I even heard about Wyckoff Starr, much less stopped in but I'm glad today that I decided to try it!
This is a really tiny, adorable coffee shop close to the Jefferson stop on the L train. This little block is unusual - it's a completely industrial area - not much of a neighborhood & yet there are two top notch establishments on the same block - Northeast Kingdom & Wyckoff Starr - bizarre!
I ordered a house coffee with a blueberry scone and my boyfriend ordered a chocolate croissant w/ a mocha - our pastries & coffee were very tasty!
I'm not sure I'd sit here for a long time in the winter months, because everytime someone opens the door, a blast of cold air hits the entire shop. But, I think this would be a great place to chill in the spring and summer.
A great find - I'll definitely be returning for more of their yummy pastries!
I love Wyckoff Star, I really do. I live around the corner, and I've been stopping by for the past year once or twice a week. The food is always consistent, the coffee is good. The bagels are good. If you have a chance, if there not gone when you get there. Get the PAW muffin. This muffin i will definitely hold in high regard for the years to come. It's also fairly priced!!! The only complaint is it size, but I think we all know this. ENJOY!
Pretty decent coffee shop, a little small, a little over priced with somewhat clueless staff (they have never once served me my bagel as ordered). If it where in another more serviced neighborhood it would only get 2, possibly 3 stars, but the location gets it extra points.
meeh . . . service sucks here, i was a barista for 4 years so maybe i have higher standards, but c'mon, a little smile, one 'thank-you' would be great especially since I'm giving you a dollar on my $2 bevi, but the coffee is decent and since there's nothing else around there, i'll suck it up, also it's crazy how many white people congregate in front of this place/block
Pretty great, simple coffee shop with good coffee and a good humus on their bagels.
If you live near the L train Jefferson stop like I do, you know that this is pretty much the only place in the neighborhood to get anything more complicated than a plain coffee with milk and sugar. That said, despite it being the only show in town, you could do a lot worse than Wyckoff Starr in looking for java.
First things first -- the coffee is better than passable and the food is tasty. This place gets points for having more than a fair selection of interesting muffin flavors, even though I'm personally addicted to the chocolate-chip banana bread and really enjoy everything bagels with soy cream cheese, cucumber, and tomato. Yum.
All that said, though the music is non-offensive and the staff is friendly, this is not a place that I would spend any time actually hanging out in. Seating is limited, cramped, and normally taken. Otherwise a fine place to get a quick cup of coffee.
I love this place. I get a ham & cheese croissant with a coffee (espresso drinks are good, too) every Saturday morning. But don't go here if you want to sit for a while. You will not get a table. Ever. Trust me.
+The coffee here is pretty good, especially for the area.
+They have tofu cream cheese for bagels.
+They have wireless internet connection.
I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, but it's near my train stop. I would recommend this place over The Archive at the morgan stop.
During the warm months when they put a few tables and chairs out front, it's actually a nice place to gather and socialize, and on a reasonably quiet block. Practically, it's really the only coffee shop in this part of Bushwick, not including Spanish-style "cafes" and the Dunkin Donuts a few blocks east. Aesthetically, it's a nice upgrade to the normal run-of-the-neighborhood small business food service establishment of Bushwick. It basically has all the components of a chill-style coffee shop, even though it's a bit small. Overall, it's a cool little joint.
I would probably go here more often if it wasn't for the fact that I don't like the coffee they serve at all. It's way too bitter and watered down, and often way too hot. I also think the clumsy-minded idea to put the creamer/napkins/sugar/stirrers/et al counter area right in front of the only entrance is ridiculous. There's virtually no clearance whatsoever. One time I was putting some sweetener in my coffee and this woman storms in and bumps my arm. Some of the coffee in my cup spilt and made a bit of a mess. She didn't even apologize. But beside the point, the owners should've configured such an area differently, and not in the way of people entering or exiting.
Regardless, since it's been awhile since I've had coffee at Wyckoff Starr, maybe four months or so, I'll be sure to get one soon and report back on whether it still sucks or not. Either way, there's no loss here, since there's always Dunkin D's and a nice Mexican diner around the corner that actually serves decent (and cheap!) coffee.
This is one of those sweet and surprising new places popping up all over Brooklyn, this time in the form of a tiny coffee place at the corner of Wyckoff Av & Starr St, near the Jefferson St stop on the L train. The neighborhood doesn't seem to have much to speak of except for the restaurant Northeast Kingdom next door (which I think is owned by the same people?)
Inside are a few tables & chairs, and they serve coffee, tea, sandwiches, and other drinky and light snacky things. I stopped in for a small coffee, which was surprisingly cheap at $1.10, and smooth & very likeable. The guy behind the counter was nice and there were a bunch of flyers and postcards by the door advertising various arty and interesting Bushwick happenings.
A great find if you live in or are passing through the area.
Simple and to the point. Thanks!
What a find. Located amongst old warehouses and auto repair shops, this little coffeehouse is a total surprise. There's only room here for about 10 or 11 people inside, but I dig that. I also liked my milky iced chai today and the Soundgarden on the stereo. Something about the place speaks early '90s coffeeshop to me, and it's not just the music.
It's more upscale in appearance than cofeeshops back then, but it also just seems so low-key and friendly like before coffeeshops became such scenes. Everyone in today seemed to be in their mid-20s to mid-30s, but surprisingly it just felt untrendy in a good way. It speaks honesty. Thanks other Yelpers for leading me here!
Why you no have decaf? Why you be so snooty when Sweet Titz ask for it? Sweet Titz twice your size. You lucky Sweet Titz friendly giant.
This is the only coffeehouse in the neighborhood and luckily the coffee here is excellent.
I love to walk over, get a coffee and a bagel, and read one of the papers or magazines they always have sitting around. Then go home and back to work. It's a lovely place and the staff is friendly.
all I gotta say is they make a good soy latte. word.
What a great little coffee shop with really friendly service and, who'd have thought, tasty coffee. Great music, a welcoming atmosphere and cool maps on the wall that you can pin to represent your peoples. You couldn't ask for more.
this place is seriously the worst. i don't know why i go here,i guess because its convenient. the "baristas" here do not know how to pull strong shots and they really don't care. drinks are watered down and lattes are way too milky. could be the ancient espresso machine too, which i heard never gets cleaned. this is actually a health hazard because of bacteria buildup. trust me, go to cafe orwell, the baristas actually smile and know what they're doing. cafe orwell - 247 varet street, near the morgan stop.
cute little place off the jefferson. has a strange mix of clientele but a decent, cozy nook in the middle of bushwick with baked goods. wireless is superb compared to other nearby coffee shops.
