Ambiance is alright (kinda awkward spatially). Service is mediocre (aka "I act hip to make sure everyone notices" vibe).
The coffee is delicious and cracked out. It won't make you kill anybody for more, but I suggest you don't try grooming yourself after you've had a cup. Just ask my eyebrows. :c -

Brooklyn, NY
A pioneering coffee shop in Bushwick. This place was around before all the other caffeine brethren popped up. Strong coffee, bagels & pastries are served all day while sandwiches and other cold and hot drinks are available for lunch The three tables and 4 stools are almost always taken except in the middle of the day. The place is always bustling and full of energy --even if not always positive and that goes for customers and staff alike. Like I said, a founding member of the Bushwick coffee brigade!

I have finally decided I cannot buy any more beverages from Wyckoff Starr. I ordered a hot chocolate the other day, it looked complicated to make, took the guy several minutes but when I got it it tasted like hot water with a hint of cocoa powder. The coffee often tastes like they are using the grounds twice. The only thing I have enjoyed at Wyckoff Starr are the muffins which I believe they get from somewhere else. For the prices, there is no excuse to have such poor quality drinks. Otherwise I have found the staff friendly, if a little slow.

Wyckoff Starr seems like an oasis in the middle of the desert. In a somewhat dreary part of Bushwick, BAM it's here. Really awesome iced coffee. Downside is that it's just plain small and crowded. Don't even think about trying to get some work done, it's almost impossible.
Come for the coffee and friendly service, don't stay to do work. -

I've been meaning to amend this review for a while. I'm still a somewhat frequent visitor to Wycoff-Starr and while some of the baristas are the same, the ones who weren't quite as friendly have all parted ways with this delightful little shop. I never hesitate to stop in these days and all the faces behind the counter are friendly. The coffee and espresso are always strong and they always have a great selection of bagels and pastries. I'm obsessed with the cinnamon-sugar bagel, it puts a little pep in my mornings! While it's not Dunkin Donuts cheap, it's also not Starbuck's expensive and there is a lot more care and better product put into your beverage here than at any coffee chain.

Coffee here is pretty good but service could be a tad more friendly. I agree with the other reviewers--some of the "baristas" here are "too cool for school." Get over it. You're in Bushwick.

Lived near this joint for a year and just recently went in. Quiet, relaxed atmosphere just like a coffee place should be. Coffee was cheap and tasty! Definitely would return.

I live 3 blocks from here and if I am running late to work I'll stop in and grab a cup of coffee. The coffee here is delicious. Strong, bold flavored and relatively inexpensive. Bagels are always good, but how hard is it to mess up a bagel?
I take issue with the unfriendliness of most of the staff. Definitely an air of "I'm way too cool to work here." -

Brooklyn, NY
I refuse to go there for coffee now. The coffee may be good, but it generally takes ten minutes to get a coffee and toasted bagel -- which when I finally received it I noticed was barely toasted. The only reason why I am complaining is because there were 3 people behind the counter; the place is obviously not understaffed, so why the hell does something that takes 2 minutes for Juan (my normal bagel guy) to do, take 10 minutes for 3 hipster-ish people to do? Maybe this can be a variation of that classic lightbulb joke. It is kind of cool to have a place like this in such a desolate area, but I think I'll just start going to the super mega ultra over-priced supermarket next door now.

I live right up the street and occasionally stop in at this coffee joint for my morning (afternoon) fix. The coffee itself is fine. Large hot = $1.95. Large iced = $2.50. They have a small selection of pastries and sandwiches; I've only ever messed with the bagels, which are good with a little cream cheese or pb&j.
I really just don't like any of the "baristas" at this spot. Everyone behind the counter acts too good for their job and like they're doing me a favor for getting my order. I mean, the service is better at the Dunkin Donuts up by Dekalb. Here's a tip. Smile and ask how I'm doing rather than staring at me blankly making me wonder if it's okay to order. Then maybe I'd think about throwing a buck into your tip can. -

Is unfortunate this is the only cafe in the area. The place is tiny and cozy yet the guys behind the counter are as dirty and dingy as the walls and floors of the place.
One of the servers had dog hair all over his shirt and was handling food and shedding dog hair all over... yuk!!!
These kids need to learn a thing or two about cleanliness and the fact that food handling is not a joke. I hope the health inspector heading their way will teach them something...
Update: after complaining to what is reasonable to the health dept. (dog hair on a person handling my food is not ok, having to remind the server the order after 20 min and dirty floors and walls even on a Sunday is not cool) my husband and I received a call from the owner who was furious for the complaint and banned us from the cafe.
After the incident we didn't plan to go back anyways but after the call I just wonder why get mad at the offended costumer instead of getting mad at himself for letting this happen? Why wasn't he more careful at hiring his employes? This is just the consequence, not a complot to ruin small businesses. -

I stop here pretty much every morning to grab a coffee and breakfast en route to work.
I've always found the staff to be plenty friendly. And on the mornings I order a bagel, it takes less than 5 minutes before it's in my hand and I'm out the door. I've never had an order get goofed up.
I love the coffee. The muffins are quite good, with a lot of interesting flavors. Bagels are also tasty but nothin' fancy. My only complaint is they put about twice as much cream cheese on the bagel as necessary. I love that they now carry sandwiches from Cafe Ghia (so yummy!).
This is a great place to pop in for a coffee on the go. It's cheap. It's also teeny, so it's not a comfy place to hang around unless it's an off time. -

Brooklyn, NY
During the warm months when they put a few tables and chairs out front, it's actually a nice place to gather and socialize, and on a reasonably quiet block. Practically, it's really the only coffee shop in this part of Bushwick, not including Spanish-style "cafes" and the Dunkin Donuts a few blocks east. Aesthetically, it's a nice upgrade to the normal run-of-the-neighborhood small business food service establishment of Bushwick. It basically has all the components of a chill-style coffee shop, even though it's a bit small. Overall, it's a cool little joint.
I would probably go here more often if it wasn't for the fact that I don't like the coffee they serve at all. It's way too bitter and watered down, and often way too hot. I also think the clumsy-minded idea to put the creamer/napkins/sugar/stirrers/et al counter area right in front of the only entrance is ridiculous. There's virtually no clearance whatsoever. One time I was putting some sweetener in my coffee and this woman storms in and bumps my arm. Some of the coffee in my cup spilt and made a bit of a mess. She didn't even apologize. But beside the point, the owners should've configured such an area differently, and not in the way of people entering or exiting.
Regardless, since it's been awhile since I've had coffee at Wyckoff Starr, maybe four months or so, I'll be sure to get one soon and report back on whether it still sucks or not. Either way, there's no loss here, since there's always Dunkin D's and a nice Mexican diner around the corner that actually serves decent (and cheap!) coffee. -

This is a cute and tiny coffee shop off the Jefferson stop on the L. The coffee is good and there's a lot of food options including pre-made sandwiches and pastries. It is a super vegan friendly place and has tofu cream cheese (YUM!). The staff mainly dress like hipsters, but are super friendly and appear dedicated to friendly and helpful customer service. The music is THE BOMB, and is often unpredictable: ranging from Jazz to Rock and Roll to Classical to Punk. There are also a lot of posts and flyers about local events, and I've gotten good response when I've left flyers about rock n roll shows coming up.
Oh- and they have Wifi. I have sat there for hours nursing one drink while taking advantage of the WiFi. -

Great coffee. Usually takes forever. Something you'd think they'd work out, since it's kind of in a nowhere area right next to a major subway hub and clearly commuter oriented. But hey, whatever. There's great art on the walls, always something new to see and think about, and from what I've heard the bagels are great.

Review from Oh K.
New York, NY
This is one of those sweet and surprising new places popping up all over Brooklyn, this time in the form of a tiny coffee place at the corner of Wyckoff Av & Starr St, near the Jefferson St stop on the L train. The neighborhood doesn't seem to have much to speak of except for the restaurant Northeast Kingdom next door (which I think is owned by the same people?)
Inside are a few tables & chairs, and they serve coffee, tea, sandwiches, and other drinky and light snacky things. I stopped in for a small coffee, which was surprisingly cheap at $1.10, and smooth & very likeable. The guy behind the counter was nice and there were a bunch of flyers and postcards by the door advertising various arty and interesting Bushwick happenings.
A great find if you live in or are passing through the area. -

Woodside, NY
What a find. Located amongst old warehouses and auto repair shops, this little coffeehouse is a total surprise. There's only room here for about 10 or 11 people inside, but I dig that. I also liked my milky iced chai today and the Soundgarden on the stereo. Something about the place speaks early '90s coffeeshop to me, and it's not just the music.
It's more upscale in appearance than cofeeshops back then, but it also just seems so low-key and friendly like before coffeeshops became such scenes. Everyone in today seemed to be in their mid-20s to mid-30s, but surprisingly it just felt untrendy in a good way. It speaks honesty. Thanks other Yelpers for leading me here! -

+The coffee here is pretty good, especially for the area.
+They have tofu cream cheese for bagels.
+They have wireless internet connection.
I wouldn't go out of my way to go here, but it's near my train stop. I would recommend this place over The Archive at the morgan stop. -
Review from Preethi C.
San Francisco, CA
I live in industrial Bushwick, a bit closer to the Archive coffee shop so it was a while before I even heard about Wyckoff Starr, much less stopped in but I'm glad today that I decided to try it!
This is a really tiny, adorable coffee shop close to the Jefferson stop on the L train. This little block is unusual - it's a completely industrial area - not much of a neighborhood & yet there are two top notch establishments on the same block - Northeast Kingdom & Wyckoff Starr - bizarre!
I ordered a house coffee with a blueberry scone and my boyfriend ordered a chocolate croissant w/ a mocha - our pastries & coffee were very tasty!
I'm not sure I'd sit here for a long time in the winter months, because everytime someone opens the door, a blast of cold air hits the entire shop. But, I think this would be a great place to chill in the spring and summer.
A great find - I'll definitely be returning for more of their yummy pastries! -

It's ok.. prices are reasonable and the drinks aren't bad. So if I am by the L train in that part of Bushwick and need a coffee fix. I would stop in there but I prefer to hit up the other coffee spots.

Brooklyn, NY
If you live near the L train Jefferson stop like I do, you know that this is pretty much the only place in the neighborhood to get anything more complicated than a plain coffee with milk and sugar. That said, despite it being the only show in town, you could do a lot worse than Wyckoff Starr in looking for java.
First things first -- the coffee is better than passable and the food is tasty. This place gets points for having more than a fair selection of interesting muffin flavors, even though I'm personally addicted to the chocolate-chip banana bread and really enjoy everything bagels with soy cream cheese, cucumber, and tomato. Yum.
All that said, though the music is non-offensive and the staff is friendly, this is not a place that I would spend any time actually hanging out in. Seating is limited, cramped, and normally taken. Otherwise a fine place to get a quick cup of coffee. -
Review from Kate G.
Now that summer is here, I will be stopping by for their delicious iced coffee. The place is small, I have never sat down inside. They do have a nice little seating area outside. The staff is well...okay for the most part, but not quite all there. The price is a tad high, but I like their brew, so I'll go along with it.
Nothing too special, but it has a convenient location and they have the essential basics down. -
Review from Mike D.
Brooklyn, NY
I'm surprised that most of the negative reviews here comment on the attitude of the staff. I find them generally friendly. However, it takes FOREVER to get a bagel, or anything prepared beyond drip coffee here. I've definitely experienced the baristas forgetting my order - or, my favorite: one morning overhearing someone else's order, "Sesame bagel with cream cheese and tomato? Oh, I dropped it, gotta make it again." As somebody who works at a faster-paced, popular cafe spot in Manhattan, I have to say, step it up guys!
My only other issue is that there are about 3 tables in the tiny space that are almost always taken up by people camped out with laptops. It's a toss up whether you'll find a chair to sit for 10 minutes to drink a coffee. Overall: fine if you're grabbing a coffee on the way to work, but a latte and bagel WILL make you late. -

Good coffee and really good muffins -- the coconut mango one I had this morning was great! Not sure about the other reviewers, but I find the staff friendly enough.

Met Scott one day at a local bar and we got to talking. I had mentioned the grinds in the bottom of the cup and he shares my pet peeve. They've made some changes with the filtration system and you can now enjoy your cop of joe down to the last drop until you order yourself a new one! Thanks man!! My bodega coffee days are over!!

REALLY good iced coffee and cheap, chewy bagels. I go here all the time. The one drawback is the very small amount of seating, so you can't bank on doing your work there.

Bushwick, Brooklyn, NY
Decent coffee, good pastries, alright prices, alright staff. The perk is that it's right by the train I have to take every day and the wifi is free. The staff is not overly friendly by any means but they do their jobs and for that, I appreciate the place. Not much seating, but I never seem to have trouble getting a place to sit.

Ozone Park, NY
A decent small coffee shop with damn good coffee. The downside of this place is the general dynamics of how it is set-up. It is very cramped around the door as the self-serve sugar/milk/lids/etc are right there. I wish the staff was a little more chipper.

How much can the rent be when prostitutes and crack heads are your neighbors? I understand they are opening on the frontier of the urban front lines but the price should reflect that. Also really just don't like any of the "baristas" at this spot. Everyone behind the counter acts too good for their job and like they're doing me a favor for getting my order.

Brooklyn, NY
Nice little shop. Ive only ever had the bagles and muffins, which are pretty good. I wish a lot of their items werent so sugary, but hard to get past that in American dietary culture. Service is fast and friendly, items are very reasonably priced. Would be nice to see ingredients, origin of ingredients, and baking practices, either online (no website, hellooo era-of-wordpress?), or in the shop itself. Only real problems are annoying hipsters smoking right outside the front door, esp when the line goes out the door and you have to inhale that toxic stuff, that, and size of the place does not meet its demand. Overall, this is a decent cafe that I frequent for a bite to eat in the morning.

I love this place. I usually get coffee & a toasted bagel & work online. It's also great because they often play good music, & have a good posting board. I go whenever i can to support local businesses. Wondering how the new stores next door will affect the seating, as there's only 3 tables that fill up fast.

Pretty decent coffee shop, a little small, a little over priced with somewhat clueless staff (they have never once served me my bagel as ordered). If it where in another more serviced neighborhood it would only get 2, possibly 3 stars, but the location gets it extra points.

i'm so happy to have wyckoff starr in the neighborhood. aside from a couple of colombian joints, it serves the only decent coffee in bushwick. it's owned by the same people who run northeast kingdom down the block, so it keeps NEK in strong coffee too-- hooray!
the pros: right next to the jefferson L train, opens early in the morning, always good music, a fun map on the wall on which you can stick a pushpin in your hometown, BONKERS chocolate-chip banana bread, the nytimes daily, a great community spot-- very bushwick-centric with lots of flyers for small-scale local art projects/performances/etc. it makes me proud to live in such a creative and ambitious area. also, i've always had good experiences with the staff. they're not always warm and fuzzy but they're not dongs, either... i don't care, they are just charging me for coffee!
cons: hardly any room to sit inside. people tend to "park" when they get one of the few seats, so don't plan to linger with your beverage. this is pretty much just a "to go" place. also, tons of bike theft on this block. if you lock up, try not to park your bike out of your sight!Listed in: Ridgewick

I love Wyckoff Star, I really do. I live around the corner, and I've been stopping by for the past year once or twice a week. The food is always consistent, the coffee is good. The bagels are good. If you have a chance, if there not gone when you get there. Get the PAW muffin. This muffin i will definitely hold in high regard for the years to come. It's also fairly priced!!! The only complaint is it size, but I think we all know this. ENJOY!

I love this place. I get a ham & cheese croissant with a coffee (espresso drinks are good, too) every Saturday morning. But don't go here if you want to sit for a while. You will not get a table. Ever. Trust me.
