Review from Ed L.
Jacksonville, FL
Wormans has been here in J-ville for as long as I have. My Mother even remembered it from when she was a child. As a kid, my family would order and pick up sliced meats, pastries and kosher pickles for different occasions or when my Aunts and Uncles came to town. Oh! how I loved those pickles from the barrel. Oh how I loved those days.
Rosa and Sam Worman opened in 1923 . Still family-owned, the bakery continues its tradition and reputation for quality and friendly service. They feature the closest thing you'll find in Jax to a New York styled Jewest- deli. The biggest difference being the amount of meat on a sandwich and it's equivalent price. In NY, they really stack em high, but charge $16-18. But all things being relative, convenience cost is a factor.
4 Stars - I had a belly buster on rye. It included pastrami, bologna, salami and liverwurst, lettuce and tomato. The bread was bakery fresh and this combination of meats reminded me of a short stacked Dagwood. A smear of yellow spicy mustard made it just delicious.
4 Stars - My LDC ordered a 1/2 Rachel sammie and cup of soup. It was equivalent to a Ruben (Julz may what to note it's not roast beef) except it has pastrami in place of corned beef. The sauerkraut with Swiss cheese melted into it were the best she's had in a while.
3 Stars - Matzah ball soup , ehhhh! it was okay.
No room for desert, sniff!
Another note: I read one review that indicated they had moved from their original location on San Marco. This is incorrect. The Broad Street store is their original location. The other two stores were expansion locations.
One more note: In spite of having beer signs hanging around as decorations, they serve none. I could knock off one star for that alone but I presume it's a cost cutting effort and I'd like for them to survive this recession and on. -
Review from Julie A.
For $8.75, I ate Rachel (and I liked it... OK OK it was just a sandwich!) and had some Matzah ball soup on the side. Ahhh memories of my Jewish chicka Diana's seder parties in the asbestos mess at Univ of Florida called Hume Hall (which was finally torn down and rebuilt). I would love to take Diana (for the Matzah ball soup) or my friend Rachel (for the Rachel sandwich) to this homely but buzzing little restaurant.
The Rachel sandwich was just wonderful. Lightly toasted bread, swiss cheese, roast beef, and that tasty sauce. But that roast beef is definitely worth the visit. Since this is a deli, you can definitely appreciate the freshness on each slice.
The Matzah ball soup had chicken and veggies and noodles in it. Quite a surprise. I'm use to old skooling it with just Matzah balls. I actually was craving it years ago and made it at home. Plain and simple. I thought they could have used a bit more flavor in the Matzah, though. =/
For dessert, they have a whole glass encasement of dessert heaven full of things they make fresh in their bakery. Coffee cakes, tea cookies, cannoli, lace cookies, just a whole lot of bite sized pieces of rapture for your tongue. I got a white chocolate and milk chocolate lace cookies, along with a cannolli.
The atmosphere is really comfy here. I felt like I was at home. It also was a major plus that they had seats right by the window where I could warm up. (Why do people like freezer temperatures in offices?)
It's a really busy place for being in the middle of nowhere in Downtown Jacksonville.

Review from Bama B.
Savannah, GA
While I was really looking forward to checking this place out, turns out they have closed after more than 20 years in business. My husband and I drove down from Savannah and were sorry to see the notice on the door.
