Love the lobster tacos and the lobster bisque.  Monday night Happy Hour Rules!! 1/2 off all apps.  I give them 4 stars instead of 5 because the drinks are not so cheap.  Come On!

Good food,  great service,  great location.   Truly a 5 star restaurant worth visiting.

Only problem is maybe a little too much garlic in their stuff - you will be burping some disgusting smells for hours afterwards but its worth it.

Very good food and excellent service. My only grunt would be the parking situation, it can be a pain.
The Happy Hours during the week are awesome, but be ready to stand in line for a while.

World Famous is great for a casual brunch or their nightly Happy Hour food and drinks specials, with a truly beautiful view, but I wouldn't come here for a nice dinner or lunch. The service is too spotty, the quality of the food not worth the full price, and the ambiance a little too loudobnoxiousyahootourist for that. The building is run down and the bar is usually uncomfortably packed with restaurant overflow as well as its own patrons.

But like I said, it's a good, solidly enjoyable spot to have some banana pancakes on the boardwalk, or dollar tacos and margaritas while watching the sunset, as long as you don't expect too much and don't mind waiting for a table along with what can seem like half of PB. ;)

Can't talk about World Famous without mentioning their Monday night happy hours! Half off all appetizers in the bar from 9PM - close.

Sometimes there a long line for these monday night happy hours.  It gets crowded and parking is difficult.   So either get there earlier or get there later.  I've been going to the happy hour off and on for years now sometimes service is great, sometimes not so great.  But for the deal its worth the spotty service.

Here are some of my favorites on the happy hour menu (mondays)

Nut crusted Brie
Prime Rib Bits
Sea Scallops
Mushroom Ravioli
Lobster Bisque
Thai Shrimp

Theres others but I just can't remember all of them.  I would stay away from the Popcorn shrimp (can anyone say Long John Silvers?), and their calamari - just because its nothing special. Their fish tacos aren't that spectacular either.

Ive never actually dined here other than for happy hour.  Recently, I've become kind of iffy on Monday night happy hours at seafood restaurants because I just read "Kitchen Confidential" by Anthony Bourdain and he was talking about how Mondays are the worst days to go for seafood.  He was saying how chefs try to sell their oldest crappiest seafood before they have to throw them away.  It makes lots of sense that World Famous seafood has happy hour on Mondays for such good prices. However, the appetizers here are so good that I would still come here and I've never had any problems.  Dine at your own risk!

Got some type of fish pasta dinner here... it was pretty good.

My daughter was acting up though (our last day on a 12 day vacation) so I had to leave early and play with her on the beach... my wife stayed inside, though, with her friend, and they enjoyed it a lot.

Sadly, this place is horrible now. used to be the spot in PB, but the service is awful and the food is subpar, especially for the price. It still has a good view of the beach and busy boardwalk, but I dont go there anymore. I took my mom there for her birthday and our waitress disappeared for nearly an hour and our food was cold and lousy. The nail in the coffin was that I wrote a letter to the manager telling him of our experience and I never even got a call from him. Too bad.

Really good shrimp tacos for a buck...can't beat that....Although they don't have any drink specials, but I guess it all evens out.  Parking is a bitch, but you are right on the boardwalk and can watch the sunset, so it's expected.

Definitely go early.  When we got there we found a table easily, but by the time we left (maybe 40 mins later) there was a line to get a table.

Random, but there was a guy from KPBS doing a story on the beach ban and was walking around sticking his boom mic into people's faces/ conversations.  I hope I'm on the radio!

My experience with this restaurant was really frustrating.

The wait was easily remedied by Fat Tire on tap.  I don't remember the bread, as I was so hungry I devoured it without tasting.  We didn't order appetizers and instead went straight to the main course.  I ordered a pasta dish with sun dried and roma tomatoes (and other things that I can't remember because the tomatoes have scarred me) and asked to add grilled scallops to it; waitress said no problem.  Hooray!

Dining buddies ordered rare ahi and potato wrapped sea bass.  Salads that came with dinner were actually really tasty, especially the warm spinach salad.  Dinner was another beast entirely.

My plate came out last and looked promising.  Lots of pasta!  Ample scallops!  In reality, it was mediocre and super bland.  And, what is this?  A RAW tomato?  Hmm...and nary a sundried in sight.  The waitress came over, asked how things were, I politely explained.  And then she explained back that the dish was just how it was supposed to be.  Oh.  I get a menu and look over my choice.  Sundried + roma!  No mention of raw, seasoning-lacking fruit/veg!  We comb through my pasta, as this has become a group affair, and there are no little dried morsels.  I am slightly vindicated.

Waitress comes back over.  I apologize for being a pain.  I ask if there is a chance I could get sundried tomatoes added to my dish?  She doesn't take my plate (odd, right?) and instead comes back 5 minutes later with a little bowl full of HARD, COLD SUNDRIED TOMATO MONSTERS.  They looked and tasted as though they were poured directly from a freaking industrial sized jar with no process in between (hi, heat?  maybe some chopping? no?).  Darn.  I sent everything back, which I rarely do.  I was so crabby about the 15 minute process I didn't order anything else.

Two stars because the beer was delicious and perfectly poured, the salads were ample and tasty, and the two bites of ahi I had were fantastic.  The service wasn't quite bad, it was more indifferent.  I would recommend this place for the view and the bar only.

Great front beach view, but food was ah-ight.

Food: For lunch, I got the lobster tacos for $9.50. They were those small street tacos, so two of those and a side of rice and beans. The food was average.

Service: Our waitress was sharp and was on top of it. Refills kept on comin'. I liked that ;0) We didn't have to wait and try to wave her down to get another refill. So that and the incredible view explains the 4 stars. But, I must say that we had reservations at noon, but weren't seated for about half an hour. I'm being nice and disregarding this since it was a busy Sunday. The waitress saved the service rating.

Ambiance: Very casual place with tons and tons of weirdos and strangers walking along the beach. We had seating right by the windows so it was great. Kept us entertained.

Price: I thought the price was average, but would have possibly enjoyed my lunch more if the price was lower only because the food was okay.

Parking: You will have to park in the parking structure and receive validation from the restaurant because trying to find parking in the limited 20 spaces is almost impossible. With validation, the parking is free!!

*When you turn into the street where the restaurant is, there's an entrance for an underground parking structure that's on your right hand side. So it's before you get to the restaurant which is up ahead, right along the beach.

Just an OK place for brunch.  It costs $5.00 to valet since it's hard to find parking.  I had an omelet with sausage, cheese and spinach.  The sausage was the cheap kind, not the fresh stuff.  The smoothies tasted nice and I had a fresh OJ which was good.  I give it 3 stars because it's right on the water and has a great view.

Definitely not the most authentic of PB/MB places. I'd like to see World Famous on a "Locals Only" list so I can engage in some pretty hard laughing.

Dirt cheap shrimp tacos on a Tues. were good and as a good surprise shocker, they even added cheese although it a sprinkle of it. For $1, I can't complain.

If you're hot sauce shy because you're afraid of sweating like a 60 y/o geezer who just got out of the stream room, you can try their hot sauce since it's very mild. If I can handle it, you can handle it.

Definitely avoid in the summer since it'll get crowded; apparently tourists love this joint. I wonder if they advertise in hotel brochures.

The only thing I really like about this place is the view. Other than that, whatever.

Made it out to World Famous for dinner after asking a local bartender where we could find some yummy seafood.  Funny thing..we each ended up with the steak and scampi!
For starters, the bread is awful.  SO HARD it is impossible to be polite about munching on it.
Next, stuffed mushrooms...$10 for 4 of the tiniest mushrooms I've ever seen (let alone stuffed).  We could have done without them.
Finally, the steak, 3 pieces of scampi shrimp and plate o rice.  The steak was great tasting (not the best I've ever had), the scampi was awesome (I wish there were more) and I paid something like $20 for that.
Ambience is alright I spose...dark restaurant on the water...
Overall, taste is great, value is not.
I might not go back.

Loved my brunch here- got there quite early on Sunday morning (8:30a)- so snagged a table outside..even though it was raining, it was perfect- as we had a view, a heatlamp to ourselves and kept dry because there is an overhang and plastic coverings to keep the rain out (more or less). It was a great place to catch up with friends and have a view of the beach and all of the activity going on outside (the boardwalk/jogging path is literally right next to the patio, so you have a front seat view of all the runners and surfers).

Food was fresh and good- large portions for cheap prices.  (Big omelettes, great  huevos rancheros and filling fruit pancakes). The bloody marys were spicy good.  Love that all the restaurants in san diego have Cholula...so much better than tabasco. I should give this place an extra star just for that.  Minus one star because I don't think I'd want to eat inside- as it's dark and sports-bar like.

The location for this place can't be much better.  It is basically on the beach.  This can make parking a little challenging but there are a couple of lots nearby.

It turns out that they have separate menus at the restaurant side versus the bar side.  We ate at the restaurant part and enjoyed the food, although it was somewhat expensive for what you got.  The potato crusted sea bass was well cooked and juicy, although the potato crust could have been a little crisper.  I added the lobster bisque which was quite good, even though it had a heavier cream base.

People at our table loved the shrimp tacos that we got.  Apparently on Tuesdays they are $1 and on Wednesdays the lobster tacos are $1.50 but it fills up if you don't get there early.

I might give this a 4 in the future, because my brother-in-law loves the eggs benedict here for brunch.  He took me here because he really likes the food, and sitting on the porch.  I'd probably like the brunch, and I'll probably come here for brunch sometime, so maybe this place will win me over.

Personally, this place merits a 3, from my experience.  We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table on the porch; we were there around 1 pm or so.  There was no wait for an inside table.  I definitely loved being able to watch what was going on at the beach, and watching the surfers.  This was probably my favorite part of this place.  I ordered the lobster bisque as a starter, and fish tacos for my entree.  (An aside---I just love the fact that you can get fish tacos everywhere!  I'm from a place where fish tacos are hard to find, and I love them, so I'm really excited about them being readily available, and since I'm moving to the area soon, I'll pretty much be in heaven!  I can't wait for fish tacos!)

I really liked the lobster bisque.  It was kind of heavy, but very tasty.  The fish tacos, very unfortunately, were not so good.  They were breaded, and I could only really taste the breading when I was eating them, and not the fish.  I guess I should have checked to see whether I could get the fish grilled, but I assumed it would be, since every place else in town where I had fish tacos, they either were grilled or the server asked if you wanted it grilled or breaded.  Anyway, I was pretty disappointed.  I couldn't finish them and brought one home for later, but I realized that I didn't like the breading so much that I knew I wouldn't eat it and I threw it out.  Maybe if I'm here for lunch or dinner in the future I'll try the shrimp or lobster tacos.

So go for the location, the lobster bisque, and the eggs benedict.  Don't go for the fish tacos unless you like them breaded!

UPDATE:  5-5-08
I went here again for breakfast and eggs benedict (finally!)  The eggs benedict ARE pretty good.  To my suprise, there were about 6 or so different kinds to choose from.  Even though it was good, it was a little too rich for me, and not the best food I've EVER tasted, so I'm sticking with my original 3 stars.

The lobster tacos are some of the best in SD.  Go on Wednesday nights...it's lobster taco night...you have to sit in the bar area and there's usually a wait, but it's worth it and it's right on the boardwalk in PB, so it's a great place to go for sunset.

My favorite here is definitely the Thai Shrimp which is actually only on the "bar menu," but you can order it if you just ask for it.  It's a little pricy, but it's good!  It has some pretty spicy sauce, but it's tasty.  Another favorite is the shrimp capellini, which, oddly, you can only order at lunch.  At dinnertime you can order the plain capellini, and pay extra for shrimp (strange, huh?).  Their french bread is yummy and I love their clam chowder.  I don't like to go there for breakfast.  Also, I don't recommend going during the heavy tourist season, quality goes down when they are totally overwhelmed with the mobs of people.

Great place and great service. We shared several items on the menu, but the lobster bisque was the best. It's so good ... but totally fattening. I think they make it with heavy cream. I also recommend the sea scallop appetizer. It was really tasty with a potato pancake under it. Downside: Only 3 scallops.

Do check the wine glass rims before they pour your glass, though. Both of ours were dirty.

Great place for brunch or sunset. I rarely go here for dinner as the food is just okay. Nothing horrible, but nothing amazing either.

Tips:

- Get the Caliente Bloody Mary, personally I think it's the best bloody in San Diego, served with Tomolives, it can't be beat
- For breakfast get the Surfrider Benedicts - pretty tasty
- Sit on the patio during sunset, great people watching and the view can't be beat
- If you're going during the summertime, especially weekends, make reservations.
- If you order a glass of wine you'll get an extra little glass with it so it's like getting a glass and a half for the price of one
- Don't go with super high expectations of the food. It's very average.
- Validate your parking :)

That's all. An average review for an average place.

Though on this page World Famous is considered to be "traditional american" cuisine, in reality it is far more than that.  Depending on which dish you pick this is definitely a fushion restaurant as you will find some Hawaiian, Japanese, Tex Mex and Mediterranean flavors.  They are great for most occasions, I primarily went for their breakfasts and happy hours.

Their happy hour is amazing but you'll have to go early if you want to grab a seat in their cocktail area, especially for any group size larger than 4.  Every night they have a special, I mainly went on Tuesday nights for their $1 shrimp tacos and Wednesday night for their $1.50 lobster tacos.  These tacos are very tasty and filling especially for their rock bottom prices (the lobster tacos are about $4 each ala carte during non-happy hour) and always pour a healthy serving of their homemade salsa onto them.

As good as their happy hours are their breakfasts are that much better.  Their home potatoes are cooked to a crispy perfection while not tasting overabundantly oily or salty.  Their bread is baked fresh and especially tantalizing dipped in their garlic balsamic viniagrette.  Though my single favorite dish is their crabcake eggs benedicts which is about as cheap as a dish of this caliber will get at $8.95.  Just imagine your typical benedict with crabcakes instead of ham.  I've paid far more than that just for crab cakes at reputable seafood restaurants that haven't tasted nearly as good.  You can actually taste the crab, not just the bread filling as with many other places.

Overall they have a very dynamic and diverse menu, just about everything I've had there was fantastic.  Regardless of your own personal tastes you can find something you will love to eat.

Good food, nice atmosphere, and waterfront entertainment, all in a single package deal.

From the surprisingly large selection of breakfast items, I jumped on a safe bet: a breakfast burrito.  I had to leave about half of it on my plate, only because it was it was a pretty big serving.

A note from my lovely assistant (also known as my wife): "If one of the waitresses bends over, you're gonna get a show, no matter which way they're facing."  So ladies, if your man has a wandering eye, take that one to heart!

Something else I had to wonder at: To get to the restroom, you have to follow a very long and winding tunnel/hallway.  I can only imagine what that must be like to a person who is drunk and on their way to the porcelain god to make an offering.

Over all, not bad.  3.7 stars rounded up to 4.  (The French and Russian scores were thrown out for being too high and too low.)

First of all, I would like to point out that I am usually pretty liberal with stars when I really like a restaurant. World Famous barely earned that third star and as I sit here writing this I am constantly vacillating about changing it to two.

I have eaten here on three different occasions.

1st- We came here for appetizers and to watch the sunset. I had the chicken strips, big mistake and although I make concessions for bar food these were more like cafeteria chicken strips. Our waitress was irritated and acted like we were bothering her when we ordered.

2nd- I came here for lunch and had the Grilled Ahi Caesar salad. It was good. The service was better.

3rd- I came for brunch and had the World Famous Wipe Out because I was hungry and I knew my boyfriend would eat what I didn't. The pancakes were gross and soggy. Our waitress promised me that I would love (yes, love) the potatoes which I did not. The service this time was mediocre at best. I understand the whole hot waitress thing, especially in P.B., but our waitress pushed it with me. Her boobs were literally in everyone's face.

Overall, I doubt I'll be going back here again.

Went here for brunch on a Saturday morn, off season. I hear it gets packed during the summer, considering it's right off the PB "boardwalk" (pssh you cali ppl don't even know what a boardwalk is - jerzy what)
Anyway, it wasn't crowded (def a plus), and their breakfast was delish; i had the crabcake benedict, and the crabcake was one of the best i've ever had. and this is san diego, home of dirty beaches and dirtier underwater sediment! anyway, i recommend going here, esp if you're hangin' out in PB. I hear dirty old men come here just for the hot waitresses. (and yes they are hot) P.S. kinda pricey, but ppl like the poshiness of it.

Decent food, nice atmosphere, lovely view of the ocean (OH! Sailboat), and attentive  waitstaff (at least Saturday brunch). It did take them 5 minutes to seat us (at a table that was vacant when we first walked in), but whatever, there was a bit of a brunch rush. A good deal for me, cheaper than breakfast at my hotel (Catamaran).

For my 2nd trip here, I had the lobster taco plate, breaded deep fried chunks of lobster meat with two types of cabbage, creamy sauce, and pico de gallo on flour tortillas with mexican rice and beans. The lobster tacos were great, just the right level of saltiness from the batter to play with the sweet lobster meat, The cabbage did a great job of making sure that 'fried' taste didn't overwhelm. The hubby had the sesame shrimp, watch out, there's hidden spiciness in them there schrimps...

Nice that for mimosas (all around) they bring out a bottle of champagne and a carafe of OJ so you can create our own to taste. Going back tomorrow to try the eggs...I spent most of my hour there gazing longingly at another patron's omelet.

Mmmm Foodies unite! And then order the nut crusted brie for an appetizer! I'm also a huge fan of upping the soup to their Lobster Bisque with your meal, there's a slight charge but it's worth it.

If I'm gonna bring myself to go to PB, which normally I dread due to the over populated streets. This is always worth my time and if it's taking a bit to park, just valet it!

The view of the ocean can be seen by almost every table inside or out, I usually pick crab, lobsters or scallops, but I'll have Halibut once in a while too. I'm not much for swimmy fish as some of them make me ill but I can take the bottom dwellers any day.

Because they cater to tourists you don't need to dress up really fancy but the prices are a tad high, they do have a deal on appetizers weekdays I think to get people to come to a happy hour.

They have a virtual tour here:

Breakfast looks like it's inexpensive and I've never been there for it!

The prices aren't high like some places for wine and appetizers. But like anywhere if you're getting steak or seafood you're going to pay from 14-20$, but it's well worth it.

I've been there a lot over the years and only had problems with service and that was because it was too busy one night.

My review is strictly based on their shrimp taco Tuesdays so I can't speak for any of the appetizers on the menu or any of the entrees served in this nice comfy feeling restaurant right alongside the beach.

I hope this place isn't "World Famous" for their shrimp tacos because they aren't all that.  Maybe they should be called "Pacific Beach Dr. Famous" or something not as renown as "World".  Granted, it was a heck of a deal for only $1 but if I had to come here again, I'd come on Wednesdays to try out their lobster taco deals instead of for these shrimp ones.  I mean, the shrimps were tiny and the cheese that they put on it did not go well with the taco at all.    Service was super quick when I went at 7:30PM

Don't go anytime around dinner. We went around 8 or so on a Wednesday.

First--hardly their fault but very annoying anyways--there was a twenty minute search for parking. It's a price paid for being popular and on the beach. Second, there was a twenty minute wait for a place to sit (If you're getting dinner call for reservations, but we were there for the bar specials and so were on our own.).

Once we sat down service was jaunty. The Wednesday bar special is $1.50 lobster tacos; we got plenty of those and the crab-cream cheese won-tons. The cheap tacos (and I think all the weekly specials) were and are well worth the price (and offered from, I believe, 4pm to 11pm throughout the week, so you have plenty of non-busy time to get them), but the $6.95 appetizer of two kind-of won-tons was underwhelming.

I think my opinion of the appetizer is representative of dinner in general: given the wait and the price and the noise I wouldn't really consider this place for any sort of nice dinner, though clearly lots of people would. Stick to the specials, which are good and well-priced.

Firepot shrimp is so good.  Ask for bread to dip in the sauce.  My friends were jealous when they tried it and wanted more of my awesome order, but luckily I'm hypoglycemic and had an excuse to hog most of the dish to myself.  The lobster rolls are better with the sauce separate.  Pama Breeze is strong and feels so good when it touches your lips!  Reservations are a must for a weekend night, and when calling ahead, ask to be seated in Jenn Newcomb's section.

One of my favorite brunch places. Good service, great view right on the boardwalk in PB, and good food. Some dishes are better than others, but everything I've had has been good. My favorite is the carne asada benedict. And for the sexist in you, the waitresses are all girls, all hot, all short skirts. Oh yeah!

Original review:

Worst. Waitress. EVAR.

More later.

-----------------------------------

So, a few days later, I'm finally getting around to updating this review, but you can definitely see my initial reaction. Seriously, I am a forgiving person (sometimes), but the service was bad bordering on horrible at all times. My coworker's meal was brought out incorrectly, without sauce. Why? We don't know. Then, instead of apologizing, as everyone else already had their food, It was just taken away. THEN, instead of successfully bringing her a new plate, they made the replacement and then dropped it on the floor. So, I'm thinking, at this point, they need to comp her meal. But nothing! About 30 minutes after the rest of us had received our meals, she finally got hers.

As noted by others, there are a million girls running around in black miniskirts and hooker heels, but apparently nothing getting done. We waited for a really long time between drinks and to order, and our waitress (from Kansas or something, presumably hoping to get discovered - sorry honey, this isn't LA) kept moving over into TMI territory every time she actually came over to talk to us.

I have to give it a few stars, though, because they have bacon-wrapped scallops (Ed! have you been here??), which I probably could have enjoyed more if I hadn't stuffed myself on appetizers which we waited a very long time for. In general, though, the food looks much better on paper than it actually is. Also an extra star for the view - perfect view onto PB, with great and hilarious people watching.

World Famous is trendy.  The food is decent, not great.  the layout is nice and the view is spectacular.  i like the firecracker shrimp.  Appetizers are better than entrees here, and Monday's they're half off.

There's like... 47 waitresses rushing around in little black skirts yet somehow the service isn't great.  Do they really need 4 hostesses?  One to ask "Two???" and 3 to stare?  How many World Famous hostesses does it take to screw in a lightbulb?

Naturally they're all very pretty and younger than me.  *hiss*

Sometimes the bisque here is thick like a sauce.

Bloody calientes have tom olives... yum.

have the dirt on this place.  If I end up dead by the Black Mountain Rd, you'll know why... the guy that used to own it got sued for groping, lost and then banned from the premises (about 10 yrs ago)... he also owns part of Old Town Mex Cafe and El Rancherito (in LJ).  Could explain the tiny skirts. *shuRg* (Yes I meant shuRg)

edit: what is even funnier is that most of the girls in the lawsuit bought... guess what??? with their new found money.
A boob job!  hahahah
