We live about 20 minutes from here, and being strapped for cash this summer have been looking for interesting free things to do. We went on a week day, and the tour consisted of the 3 of us and the tour guide. The tour was very interesting for us adults, and even my 8 year old brother really enjoyed it and wants to go back. they now have both houses on the property open, but the second house (the spanish style one) is the most interesting. We were a little concerned it would be rather too warm, but because the homes are made out of adobe and there's plentiful shade outside we were never uncomfortably hot.

I wouldn't take a young child on this tour, but for older kids, say 7+, it can be very interesting. For my brother it was particularly so since he started learning about CA history this past school year.

Interesting and nice place to visit.  The grounds are  kinda of small and consist of  2 houses (one big and one small) and a cemetery.  The last time I went we were only allowed to go into the big house, which was still cool.

Even though I love going to these types of historical landmarks, they all seem to have an creepy ambiance (kinda of like going to the Queen Mary or Alcatraz and you don't know if your going to see something weird and/or paranormal activity) about them.  Going on these types of properties is like stepping back in time.  Seeing and knowing that people used to live on this property which looks pretty much the way it did back than which was about 100+ years ago just kinda weirds me out....but like I said before, I find that part of these places appeal and still very much enjoy visiting these types of historical landmarks/museums.

Four stars because the place is small and can really be seen in less than 2 hours, but you can't beat that being that it's FREE!!!

Homestead Museum - a six-acre site dates from the era when California was still part of Mexico through the decade of the 1920s when Los Angeles had become a major American city. I feel bad giving this place three stars because anything that is to do with history is a good thing in my book. However, as nice as the people who run this place are, their tour is a bit boring - despite it being a special tour with living history "characters". It probably didn't help that we had one of those annoying people who like to try and "trip up" the unpaid volunteer by asking questions that frankly no one knows the answer to, and he probably didn't need to know the answers to. He got old quick. Worth a visit if you are in the area especially as its free and rather pretty.
