Like other reviewers have said, Woodside is whatever you want it to be: a place to kick it on the treadmill; a place to catch a spin class every now and again; a place to wear your bikini in the summer. But I STRONGLY urge you to take advantage of everything it has to offer -- because for me, Woodside has totally changed my life. Oh God, how dramatic, right? But seriously.
Before I joined Woodside in August, I was kind of a hater. I thought the membership prices were stupid and that the pool was a bro-fest. The pool is still kind of brodacious, but for the ridiculous number of group exercise classes you get with your membership, I feel like the price is totally fair (a good value, even). Honestly, I joined Woodside because it was close to my house -- and because I was participating in a weight loss contest at work and needed a place to burn a few calories. And now I can't say enough good things about it.
To set the scene: the first day I met the trainer I was paired with for my free new member sesh, she asked me what I liked to do. I told her it was probably easier if I told her what I DIDN'T like to do -- and proceeded to rattle off every single exercise on earth.
That trainer (Tonya, who is THE BOMB and will make your fitness dreams come true) went on to create a fitness & nutrition program for me -- and between Woodside's group exercise classes and training sessions with her, I've lost 20 pounds in just over 3 months. Legit. Size 12 to size 6-8ish. And I actually...enjoy exercising. It's like, is this real life? I have never been in shape, ever... and have always struggled with my weight. I am completely in awe at what the right environment and the right people & motivators have done.
So: the group exercise classes. If you want to whip your fat arse into shape, hit a Woodside class every day of the week. Between the Monday JumpCore/BodyPump combo, Annie's Wednesday Spin and Saturday JumpCore/BodyPump/CXWorx marathon, you will see results. I sound like an infomercial. But honestly. The classes here are second to none.
As for the rest of the club, it's super clean. It's REALLY well-maintained; the facilities are impeccable. None of the equipment is ever busted. And, miraculously, the locker rooms never smell. How do they do that?
Okay and now one more thing. The staff here. I freaking love them. I'm brand new to KC, and Woodside has made me feel like a part of a community -- totally due to the warmth and awesomeness of the staff. I feel like they care. And I feel like they hold me accountable. And I feel like they're invested in my success, genuinely & sincerely. If I could give my trainer, Tonya, a Yelp review of her own, I totally would because she is amazing and gives everything to her clients. But Tonya can't have a Yelp review because she is a person. So this gush-fest must end here. To summarize: Woodside is the bomb. -

Woodside is a magical place that will be whatever you want it to be. You want to go and have someone yell at you like a maniacal drill Sargent until your limbs don't function anymore? Done. You want to zone out on an elliptical machine with your own personal TV playing Sex in the City reruns? Done. You want to reconnect with your inner self in a relaxing and up to date yoga studio? Done. Feel pampered in the spa with an eyebrow shaping and massage? Yup, that too.
Basically Woodside offers an exceptional rendition of every facet of what a top of the line gym is supposed to be. There is a great blend of older members who demand great service and younger members who keep a fresh vibe. The pools are a great attraction, although it does get a bit clubby for me. It is easy to find a more traditional pool experience at the lower pool where more families hang out.
There is no question that Woodside is more expensive than other gyms, but I have to say that not once have I ever felt that it was not worth the money. They have always been kind, attentive, and dedicated to my health and fitness. I actually have gotten in noticeably better shape since joining Woodside. Maybe that is because the thought of squandering such an expensive gym membership is too much for me to bear, but I think a much better explanation would be that my experiences at Woodside have been so pleasant that going to the gym has become a pleasure rather than a chore. -
Review from Bill C.
This place has been around for a long time and I think it may have a certain image in peoples heads without any justification. I know it did for me. Luckily though I got a chance to get in here and take a look under her skirt. I managed to land a groupon for 29 visits for $29.
That my friends is the best value I may ever get out of a groupon.
This place is in the transformation stages and already I prefer it in many ways over the normal chain fitness clubs dotting the country.
The staff is really top-notch and pretty helpful. They have a complex here, a north building and a south building. So if there isn't a treadmill open at the north building head on over to the south building. Me I prefer to run on trails, or streets and when that won't work there is an indoor 1/15 mile loop I can run at the south building. Big plus for me!
I enjoy the sauna and steam rooms. Neither of them smells like urine. Problem at other facilities for me in the past! If you aren't comfortable using the shared steam room you can use the one in your gender's locker room.
I love the group classes there. My favorite class to kick the heck out my abs and glutes is the Pilates mat class by Dana, now called Beyond Balance. They have a great Yoga studio that compares with the specialty Yoga studios in town, and many great Yoga classes. I look forward to men's core with Therese Hogarty. It mixes Yoga with some Pilate's core strength. She also has a Pilate's mat class and both of these instructors do a great job explaining the positions and at assisting you.
The locker room/shower/lounge is really exceptional. And when they tried to change the shampoo in the showers some of the old timers complained and they went back to the better shampoo. So there is a base of older people at this club, but plenty of us younger people coming in, I still qualify as younger right? I think it's a healthier mix and an all-around more complete health club than any I have experienced.
Big plans on the outdoor pool and I have heard with the Yoga Studio as well. It costs a bit more than a chain, but you get more. For me cost and convenience loses to this club. I think the quality of what I get is worth the extra and will probably become a member soon. -

For me, it's easy to feel intimidated at the gym. I did feel this way the first few times I went. I feel pretty at home there now. I think the fact of the matter is - yes, it costs more than other gyms. People that go there can afford to go (unless you're me and agree to 2 years to get the lower rate) so they tend to be either the business type or the soccer mom. Do not confuse their get-in, get-out attitudes as rude; they just mean business. I enjoy working out there and think the staff are always helpful.
If you want the following, this is for you:
- well maintained, clean and accessible fitness center
- courteous and helpful staff
- spa on site when you need a massage
- bar in the pool area (i cannot wait for summer)
- classes included in membership fee
- ummm bar!
Not for you if you need a 24 hour facility or a low budget option. -
Review from Joi B.
Six months a member now, so this review could stand an updating.
Really, this club is just about perfect in almost every way. I'll get to the reason for the "just about" at the end, because the positives are what's important here.
First, this club is spotless. During the winter when everyone seems to have some kind of cold or flu, I don't even worry about germs (no, really), because not only are people pretty considerate about cleaning up after themselves, but the cleaning staff here are top notch. There is never a time when I haven't seen someone cleaning what appears to already be spotless. Gotta give huge props to that.
Second, the classes really are good. Besides yoga, which is just as good as I've taken in any dedicated yoga studio, I've taken the spin classes. Despite not liking the music very much (which is the case in every spin class I've ever taken, so I'm sure I'm in the minority when it comes to despising bizarre mash-ups), the teachers are just really nice and seem to care that you're there. Hell, maybe they don't care, but it's nice to feel like you matter sometimes, even if it's to a guy who thinks it's AOK to mash The Offspring (blech) with Britney. Oh and they have a live DJ making the class even more lively during the Friday Happy Hour spin once a month. So, if that's your thing...
Grounds are meticulously landscaped and during this snowcapolyptic winter, I always could count on them to plow the parking lot (can't say the same for the rest of the city). It's nice to be able to count on your gym's lot being plowed, as well as the road leading up to it, even if you can't even get off your own block.
I'm really looking forward to pool season which starts next week. The cool thing is, you can bring family members for a low admittance fee, as long as they come in with a member. It's not at all a typical gym pool, but more akin to a hotel (and hello, there's a *bar* out there!)
They've also done regular renovations and updates several times since I've joined. Just a note that earlier reviews are not quite valid when you consider all the renovations that are making it a gym worthy of the better ones in bigger cities.
The snack bar is undergoing a renovation, and I hope that means a complete overhaul as it is weird to see bags of chips as an option in a health club. Bags of chips are aplenty everywhere else in this city from coffee shops to gas stations. How about instead of greasy potato chips, there are some raw seaweed or kale options? I know, I know. I sound just like your mother.
The not so great: there are a few members that leave weights out. It's not the gym's fault but owes more to the type of "someone will clean up after me" mentality that one might expect when you consider the cars gracing the parking lot (for the record, my 15-year-old Camry is shunned by all the Jaguars, Mercedes and BMWs who don't want to be seen with it. That's OK. She's strong). Then again, when I belonged to cheaper gyms, it would make me ballistic on a regular basis when people would leave out extremely heavy weights that you'd have to struggle to move to be able to use the machines (I mean those round, large weights that you put on ... I forget the brand of equipment). At Woodside, the culprit is leaving a heavy weight to keep the kneeling pad down on the pull-up machine. Um, if you don't need a counter weight, just use the freaking pull up bars on the other side of the room. It's just inconsiderate to leave the weight there.
That's not a really big deal (rather a good way for me to get my gym spiel out there to Yelpland and prevent such thoughtless behavior in others who may be unaware of the annoyance) and wouldn't really make me lower the star rating. The *only* thing that has me keeping a star off of Woodside is the fact that their weekend and holiday hours are not the best. They close at 7 on Saturday and Sunday and are closed most major holidays. Some of us like to fit in a workout before Thanksgiving dinner and/or don't celebrate Easter so would like to fit a workout in on a work holiday. Other gyms I have belonged to would have modified hours on holidays, but never were closed all day. Some of us look at a workout just as crucial to our daily mental health as a good meal. This gym does not come cheap, so give us better hours, please.
So, this is a significant quip, but in light of all that is superb here, I still give Woodside 4 stars for being a fantastic gym.Listed in: To Blow a Pay Check In Kansas…, Places in KC to Watch a…, Active Life, Kansas City, Yoga, Kansas City

I am not a member, but checked out the pool one day with a friend who has been a member for years.
From all the hype on this place, I expected something really impressive. It was a let down. Parts of the inside, like the yoga room and the ladies locker room looked recently updated, but the pool, jacuzzi area, snack area and entrance felt Ozarks circa 1975. There is no flow of theme here. From what I hear the dues are pretty hefty...where are they putting the $$???
The crowd at the pool felt cheesy, like they had been to Vegas 5 years ago and are trying to relive their skanky weekend. I can't believe KC considers this place to be the best health club or the best pool scene...ick. -

You know, I'm a fairly simplistic gym goer - I just need my cardio and my weights, and I'm good. While I should branch out, I just don't - and I'm cool with that. So, with that being said, at times I get annoyed with my high dues. However, the fact that I've never jumped on a piece of equipment that isn't working properly, makes the extra money I pay worth it. As let's face it, I've been a member of 3 gyms in the kc area, and at all them, I found myself playing a game of musical chairs with the equipment on a daily basis. Yeah, you know what I'm talking about - on, start, move; squeak, ricket, spat! Annoying.
Also, the gym is kept extremely clean and all of the employees are very professional, mature and friendly. I totally dig that.
Now, the cons - dude, I'm paying $$$ a month - could we please stay open a bit later. Seriously. And it's not so much the north side, but the south side. I love the south side gym (quiet, no distractions), but it closes at 5 on Sat and Sun - and at 7 on Fridays. You know, as a business owner who's constantly working, there are just days where the only time I can fit in a workout is late at night - and unfortunately, on those days, I've just been forced to go without (which, is no bueno). The other con, is that if you go around 9-10 am, it's housewife central - and man those women have a lot drama to gossip about :) Insert: don't forget ipod here. And the last con, was the joining fees - I'm so over that. Moreover, I'm pretty sure I also paid a 'security deposit fee' - like you would if you were renting an apartment. I'm not sure the reasoning behind that fee, but really? It seemed a bit much - as if one night I'm going to go into the gym and vandalize it or something?? Very odd.
However, that being said, I really can't complain about much anything else. Like I said, I'm not hard to please, but I am easy to irritate (ha) and so far, other than a few complaints, the gym has been a pretty solid investment.Comment from Kevin P. of Woodside Health & Tennis Club 8/17/2011

The staff that I dealt with were arrogant and condescending. They pushed the high pressure sales techniques normally reserved for used car dealerships. I never could get a straight answer out of them on price, the numbers kept changing, it almost seemed like they were just making them up based on what they thought they could get away with.
UPDATE: The person I spoke with on the phone contacted me threw Yelp. We did not come to any agreements, and I fully stand by my review. I was however impressed they made the effort to reach out. So I have added one star. -

I came here to take some tennis lessons, only to be transfered to Atlanta after two! Ah, what luck.
But, my short time here made me want to become a member. Firstly, the club looked so chic and refreshing, very inviting! And secondly, everyone was so friendly and willing to help- mainly my instructor, Tony who was fabulous!
I only wish I could have had more than two lessons before I was sent to a different state.... -

I'm looking forward to joining this club in the summertime. I'm no newcomer to urban resorts (I was a member at Fit/San Diego), and have been looking for a new gym to join in town. I am currently using my 24-hour fitness membership because at the very least, 24 has the equipment I need. What it doesn't have is a dedicated spa, 4 swimming pools, tennis courts, and some of the area's best cycling classes. This is why people join Woodside. It's the place to be and be seen around the pool in the summertime. They keep the place immaculately clean and well-stocked. The staff look healthy, are friendly and most of the other members follow gym etiquette and seem to be wealthy. There are probably better deals out there (and compared to similar resort-type gyms in Southern California--this is a steal), but if you like the better things in life, and spend a lot of time trying to look your best, then why not here?
