We loved this place. The location is small but instead of feeling cramped it felt homey and warm. I loved the design of the restaurant from the artwork on the walls, to the onions at the tables, to the unique cinnamon water. We ordered sangria, some white and some red and they were not only huge but delicious.
Similar to other reviews I've read on Woodspoon I too recommend you get an assortment of small plates to start. There are just so many unique and delicious options it would be hard to choose just one or two. That said I absolutely recommend you get the Mix Plate which is the croquette, coxinha, kibe, pastel and bolinho. You only get one of each but they are large enough to split each in half for two people to get a taste of each. We also got the Beet Salad which was outstanding - it tasted so fresh. We also got the Crispy Chicken and Yucca Fries which I recommend after the other two. Just as tasty but not quiet as unique.
Of the six of us in our group half got the Moqueca which is the traditional seafood stew and comes with cod, prawns, mussels, clams in a coconut sauce and comes with white rice. It was a great serving size, my husband finished it and was pleasantly full but the other two of us had left overs.
The other three of our party got the Lamb Plate, Picanha and the Polenta. All three were very much enjoyed.
10 out of 10, we would highly recommend this restaurant! The staff was so knowledgeable and nice. My husband has some food allergies and they handled it perfectly. Clearly letting him know what he he needed to avoid.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 1 - Nov 17, 2023
4+ full disclosure: went here a few years ago and putting this up for posterity reasons. They've been temporarily closed for a while now and not sure if it's going to be permanent, but hoping they reopen soon.
Came here with a group of friends and we got some apps to split as well as the sangria. I remember the sangria being tasty and I'm usually not a big Fran of sangria or modified wine drinks in general. The service was friendly and the ambiance felt like a fun cozy little cafe.
I ordered the Brazilian Chicken Pot Pie for my main and thought it was great. Overall this restaurant is great and really hoping they make a strong comeback.Helpful 3Thanks 1Love this 2Oh no 0 - Mar 19, 2023
I circled once and was lucky to find metered parking a block away, easy for a Wednesday night. Saw this restaurant on Infatuation, TimeOut, and Eater and decided to check it out. It's quaint and homely, like what many yelpers said. The food was flavorful, but the portions were small. We got the yucca with chicken, but the chicken was dry, so we just went with the yucca fries.
We also got the pot pie and seafood soup to share. Lots of seafood with one prawn. For drinks, we had red wine, and the still water was cinnamon infused (great for digestion!). Service was okay, they missed a few things, but it was pretty busy.
The dining room was filled with chatter from artsy beautiful DTLA humans, and there was even a birthday party behind us. I'd be open to coming back to splurge on other dishes.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 1 - Jun 10, 2023
I was so excited to try Woodspoon out - recommended by a friend. After driving from the Westside over to DTLA and finding parking, I had a little over 30 minutes before they closed midday lunch service in preparation for dinner service. This is a common way of business in Brazil as well. When I had walked in, I was waiting for a little before someone walked up to me. I was immediately denied service for being seated cause they said they were closing. I told them I wouldn't stay long (it was just me - there were other tables w/ more than one person, some with at most 4). The waiter allowed me to sit at the smallest 2 person table by the door. I had water cause they didn't serve caipirinhas (only wine) and when the menu was delivered, he gave me a short list of what was actually available - knocking out things I was anticipating on trying, the only thing that made sense for the reason I drove all the way there was to get the mixed appetizer platter which were small bites - at least 1 piece of a different typical bar food you might have in Brazil. I finished that so fast, lol. I actually left way before people who were there before me were and to top it off - not sure why, but additional people / groups had walked in after I had been seated and they were not denied. I'm not sure what the difference was, other than to wonder if maybe they were doing a private party or they knew the people in the back? I kind of feel like they were given a more extensive availability from the menu.
The waiter was a nice person, but I was disappointed by the menu selection. The food was good, but disappointed by the size. Kind of a let down from my travels specifically for this place and now they're closing their doors so I will never be able to try any of their other dishes ever again. Trying so hard to find an amazing Brazilian restaurant in California after coming back from my trip from Brazil, but haven't been having much luck - help!Helpful 5Thanks 0Love this 3Oh no 0 - 935398Dec 29, 2022
Price: About $30 each for pot pie and croquettes
Favorites: Appetizer Mix Plate, Pot Pie
Tips: Sample all of the appetizers with the mix!
In A Word: Heartwarming
As my coworkers and I entered Woodspoon's minimalist yet cozy storefront, we were instantly comforted by the refined atmosphere. The service staff were just as welcoming, smiling warmly and pouring us some delicious cinnamon-infused water. We had all heard great things about the chicken pot pie, so most of us ordered it and were not disappointed.
The crust was flaky and the filling was fragrant. Chicken pot pie is renowned for its comforting qualities, and this Brazilian version certainly lived up to expectations. We also ordered the appetizer sampler, which included five varieties of fried, croquette-like appetizers including ground beef, cod, and chicken. Each was tasty, crunchy, and savory. Next time, I'm looking forward to trying something spicier or more acidic, as both the croquettes and pot pie, while delicious, were similarly starchier in flavor.
Eating at Woodspoon is a surefire way to have a pleasant, heartwarming evening out. I'm excited to learn more about and appreciate Brazilian cuisine after my visit.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - 24317246Aug 21, 2022
This little hidden gem was the perfect lunch spot on a Saturday afternoon! Great Brazilian menu with really flavorful food at a very fair price.
I would recommend getting the sangria!!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 20336181987Jun 26, 2022
Our visit was OK. The place is cute and comfy. The wait staff were friendly and engaged.
The food was OK and that's what we were there for.
We ordered the following:
- Beet Salad: It was refreshing and lightly dressed. The cuts were of different shapes so the taste was consistent.
- Mix Plate (croquettes of difference flavor) There were 5 different flavors. One was fish, then shrimp, chicken, pork and then beef. The fish was delicious. My boyfriend liked the chicken the most.
- Pastel Portuguese (shrimp & coconut croquettes) The filling was mushy. The ratio was a lot of filling to the breading. It almost tasted uncooked but it was. It was mushy and wet. It wasn't pleasant.
- Costelinha com canjiquinha: The corn grits were yummy along with the sauce it came with.
We were in the area to watch a comedy show and gave this place a try. Our reservation was right when they opened. We beat the crowd. After the comedy show we walked past this place again and there was a line out the door.
Their menus change so I'm open to give this place another try.Helpful 14Thanks 0Love this 11Oh no 0 - Lonnette M.Los Angeles, CA54163147Dec 22, 2022
Random night with a friend and we ended up here. Best decision of my day. The restaurant is right off of 9th and Main. It's a small restaurant but like one of this little holes in the wall that just surprises you. I'm told this place has been open for 16 years and is black owned. The lighting is low, and the vibe is very family friendly.
I ordered the mixed veggies. They didn't have plantains so I had a potato option instead. EVERYTHING was absolutely amazing. Very flavorful with every bite. I'm trying a vegan plan this week so it was exactly what I needed.
There is street parking. If you're local, you can take a scooter or just walk.
Highly recommend.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - 189829298615Apr 1, 2022
Woodspoon is located in downtown Los Angeles and has some pretty tasty authentic Brazilian food that is filled with tons of flavor and great to eat with friends.
They have been here for a long time and many of the customers come back because this food is seriously delicious.
Parking is a little hard we had to park in a private lot and walked a few blocks away. Came here with a group of five people during an early dinner. This place was completely packed and had many people in this spot.
My favorite dishes are probably the chicken pot pie and also the potato salad and yucca fries. Their menu does change from time to time with some new items but one of the staples of the pot pie has been here for a long time.
Bring your hungry self with some friends to enjoy and share a meal here! This place will not disappoint you.Helpful 20Thanks 0Love this 23Oh no 0
