As I was driving back from Portland, OR, I was craving something other than Fast Food. I was still about 150 miles outside of Sacramento driving on I-5.
Yelp to the rescue. Mind that Willows is pretty much out in the middle of farm country California...I was surprised to see decent reviews of this place.
I got off the freeway and I missed it at first...it's hidden next door to the Motel 6, just on the east side of I-5 and north at the first light.
The decor took me back to my Ohio childhood, a stand-alone restaurant with Chinese photos hanging on the wall.
We walked in and there was one other couple finishing their meal. The menu has traditional Chinese food. We ordered standbys chicken with snow peas and beef with peppers with steam rice.
Food came out and there were decent portions. Food itself tasted good (considering where we were).
Service was good.
Seemed that they do a quite of bit of takeout.

Ordered the Mongolian beef lunch special. It's ok, not much beef. Taste ok, nothing special. Waitress was nice. She got us a pitcher of ice water knowing it was hot there and we were thirsty.

Not Mexican! Woo! Given the other choices in town, I was thrilled to find this place tucked away behind the motel. After a long day at the track, all I wanted was a quiet place to sit down and refuel. This was just what the doctor prescribed.
Really decent Americanized Chinese food, particularly for the location. I will definitely be a return customer on my future trips to Willows/Thunderhill. -

Really good chinese food for the boonies. This chinese owned and run spot is the best place to eat near Thunderhill Raceway. You can eat the regular other bullshit, mickey ds, b king, kfc, even round table, but the best shit round here is Wongs. I eat here everytime I get to the telly at willows. Hmmm, last time I had some chicken with bakchoi and eggplant with fish, it was really good.
They never left my water glass empty, attentive little ladies. -

So....for small town USA Chinese food this isn't bad. For starters they actually speak Chinese. So good.
I ordered the Chow mein listed as Hong Kong style in the menu. It came out crispy and fried like I like it. Granted the noodles themselves left much to be desired. But the overall preparation was done well.
Other dishes did have the Americanized heavy on the sauce affects. But again...I think they are doing the best they can with what they have in the middle of no where. -

Pretty decent Chinese restaurant in the middle of nowhere. We stayed at Motel 6 across the parking lot and came here for dinner. The restaurant was deserted on a Sunday night, but had many takeout orders. The head waitress is Chinese and speaks fluent Cantonese. She recommended a lot of deep fried dishes, until we told her we prefer less oily and more vegetable dishes. We ordered a stir-fried beef with oyster sauce and a spicy chicken in some sort of sweet soy sauce. You can tell right off the bat they use the canned mushrooms, because of the copper taste. The beef is tender and the chicken are chopped up too small to discern from the vegetables. They are tasty, but very oily and salty. The service is prompt, since we were the only dine-in customers for the whole night. If I am in the area, I would come back here again. Got to support my peeps, right?

Quite good Americanized Chinese food, especially for the middle of nowhere. I got a tofu dish with eggplant, water chestnuts and mushrooms, and it was very good--certainly the best I've had along that stretch of the I-5, and absolutely better than crappy chain fast food.

What can I say. Best Chinese food I have had in a while. Fresh, savory, not heavy. Had maybe 12 different dishes over 2 days. All excellent. Who would have thought Willows, California is where the good Chinese food is???
