Having purchased several items form Wonder Book via the Amazon marketplace, I figured I should finally stop in and pay this storied local retailer a visit.  I had a list of movies that are still available on VHS-only on a slip of paper in my wallet, so I headed straight to the movie aisles.  They have an impressive selection of flicks, for sale or rental, but this is an especially good place to shop for the obscure or otherwise out of print.  While not all my selections were at hand, all but two were in stock in one of their three locations.  I'm stopping back later today to pick up two movies they transferred down from the Hagerstown store.

As one other reviewer has already noted, this is a wise option as the place is FILLED with merchandise, from movies and books to prints and calendars and t-shirts.  Browsing is an option, but keep track of your time because you could spend hours perusing through their many long and tall aisles.  In fact, I half expected to encounter some fugitives in the mystery section or ex-presidents in the historical biography nook.  I never did come across the lost children department, but I am sure they have one.

Kudos to the staff for being extra kind and helpful.  As I was wandering wide-eyed through the stacks, I was asked more than once if I needed help finding something.  I tried to stump the clerks with requests like Ginsu Cooking Techniques or the Field Book of Obnoxious Concert Fans, but they were always able to point me in the right direction ... including towards the exit when I decided it was finally time to head home 90 minutes later!

I love big bookstores that have nooks and crannies, but not when I'm looking for something specific.

They layout didn't make much sense to me and their map didn't help much. It might be nicer if they put a list of categories and tell you where on the map they are instead of trying to fit a map with writing all on one side. The print was tiny, even for my good eyes.

I found books by the author I was looking for in 2 sections, but not the book I was looking for.

Not the most cohesive place to go if you're in a hurry or have a toddler with grabby hands.

Wonder Book and Video is great. I just picked up two great books:
Brave New World and The Grapes of Wrath. I got both books and spent
less than 5 dollars.
I will divide Wonder Book and video into three sections: The movies, The videogames and the books.

1. The movies= A great selection for both rental and purchasing. In comparing the local blockbuster with Wonder Book and Video, Wonder Book has a wider selection of new releases, however they a limited to
only two or three copies of each movie(unlike Blockbuster which has
89 copies of Sex in the City).  They are great about ordering movies that
they dont have and in addition to the movies, they have various t.v series:
The sopranos, 24, The Wire , Family Guy.

2. The Videogames= I was impressed to find Soul Calibar IV for rent. This game just came out. A growing number of ps3 games and a wider selection of Xbox and Wii games grace the shelves at Wonder Book and Video (O.K I am growing tired of typing out Wonder Book and Video everytime, from now on I am calling it W.B.V).

3. The Books= This is where W.B.V stands out. If you are about to go to
Border's Book to spend $30 on the latest Deepak Chopra book, visit W.B.V first, they might have it for $9.99. W.B.V is trying to move the books as quick as they can, so they will even barter with the price.
Civil War books,History Books, Self-Help books are scattered throughout the store and are often sold at 75-80% off the retail price.

I love W.B.V and can spend an hour just searching thru all the DVD/VHS(often on sale for 99 cents)/Blue-Ray selections. Hours are 10-10 and it would be nice if the hours where extended to midnight on Friday and Saturday, but that is my only complaint.

This is one of my favorite places in Frederick (the Hagerstown location is awesome as well!)

I have found a ton of great books here. My only complaint is that you really NEED to know what you are looking for before you walk in the door. Write it down if you have to, because once you walk in you will be completely overwhelmed by it's magnificence.

Though browsing is fun too.

I can spend hours in this place.
I've found many out-of-print books that I had been searching for for years.
Prices are good, too.

I believe they only have one location now, Justin P.  In Hagerstown.  Or maybe Rte. 40.  At any rate, they closed the one on Prospect.

You can find anything, everything, and more, and despite the fact that the prices aren't as cheap as Goodwill, the selection is much more thoughtful.  Plus you can rent a movie.

Wonder they don't call it, Wonder Book and DVD, nowadays.

Oh yeah, what a great book store!  But they have three locations, so you have to browse all over.  I think the biggest is on Rt 40 in Frederick, though Hagerstown is pretty big too.  Has the H-town location moved yet?  They've been saying that they were almost ready to for like a year.  Also, they have good national geographic maps.  BTW, I've been going to Wonder Book since back in the day - like back when they were the only video rental place in town, before Errol's even, like when they even had beta max.

I feel like they rip you off when you bring books to sell to them. The buyers seem to be like they can't be bothered with your books.

Wonderbook is fantastic.  I've spent hours of my life sitting on that linoleum floor reading and rummaging through those books.  The prices are insanely cheap. The guy that gave them two stars clearly misses the point.  Diamond in the rough. Period.

Wonder Book and video is the perfect place to browse for long forgotten books, music, or movies. They are incredibly well stocked and have excellent prices. They also buy your used books, music and movies, so you can constantly keep your collection updated. If you cant find it there- it might not be able to be found!

Fun place to find offbeat books and stuff.  I get lost in the cookbooks.  Huge selection of foreign films and lots of choices for rentals- much better than you-know-who.
