If you are still eating grocery store or Einstein bagels in the Albuquerque area, take this as your sign to stop. Seriously. My husband and I have had bagels from Seattle to New York and into Europe and we can easily say that Wolfe's is the best! They are delightfully and lightly crisp on the outside while the right amount of fluffy on the inside. Whether or not you like them toasted, they'll go perfect with Wolfe's assortment of fresh made shmear - including strawberry, plain, lox, and green chile!
But they are so much more than their infamous bagels that have been well known in the Albuquerque area since the 90's. No, the name Wolfe means family. When you walk in, that is exactly what you will feel like. The first time I came in, I instantly thought "these are my people." I just wanted to hug the sweet man behind the counter. And every time an employee would walk by, he would greet me and ask about my day. When was the last time you experienced service like that?
Speaking of family, Wolfe's makes better matzo ball soup than my own Jewish grandma. But please don't tell her that!!! They also make a killer mocha! Their coffee is a must! When you stop by, tell them Ashley says hi!Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0 - John W.Littleton, CO675262323Jun 2, 2017
Finally made it to Wolfe's after passing by countless times during the afternoon and evening hours. The tag line of having "the best bagels above sea level" had me wondering how they compared with the bagels I grew up with in the northeast. Wolfe's doesn't quite compare with a NYC bakery but I'll give them some of the best bagels in the Albuquerque area.
There were plenty of flavors from which to choose. I picked a Cinnamon Raisin for something traditional and a Cranberry Walnut for something more unique. The girl at the counter was friendly and eager to help. She sliced 'em, bagged 'em up, and I was on my way. The bagels have a chewy quality and the flavors are somewhat subtle. All of that is probably best for a sandwich or with a good schmear.
As I said, these are some of the better bagels I've had in Albuqerque. Smith's and other grocery stores aren't very good, except for the green chile cheese. That one's pretty delicious. The other options are often chains like Einstein or Panera. Those chains do a decent bagel but I prefer the local bakeries when that's an option.Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 2Oh no 0 - Sep 20, 2016
Very friendly staff. Fresh bagels. Tasty, Only Wolfe's reminds me of a Seinfeld episode. The bagels have no seasoning on the bottom half. Perhaps they could just sell bagel tops and give the bagel bottoms to a Food Bank. Please give us seasoning on the bagel bottoms. Thanks for reading. The Bike Chaplain

The writer Douglas Adams wrote about a fictional position(person/title) of the great sandwich maker, I think I found his equivalent in the field of Bagel Sandwiches.
Wolfs bagels has long been part of my life, I remember a cold March morning getting paid for giving a friends roommate a ride to work with a fresh hot sesame bagels, oh sweet heavenly fresh nutty flavor and so good even just with nothing on it.
Today i dropped by after appointment, To grab some bagels for lunches, and also ordered a darn fine NM Turkey Melt, oh my *swoon* the turkey was 20min from the oven(not a lifeless blob of mechanically separated meat, but an actual turkey breast), so fresh so flavorful, the dijon mustard green chile pepperjack, all awesome. Even the tomato and red onion were a delight, none of it was drippy or too strong to do anything other than compliment, not distract. in a word Yum! The Bagel Sandwich Maker, did fine work, and I gobbled up every bite.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Bob L.Rio Rancho, NM60402960Apr 27, 2017Updated review
They lost their long time baker a few months ago, so i have waited patiently for the owner to step up but to be perfectly honest, the bagels have suffered terribly. They are edible, and in NM it seems that bagels are defined by simply having a hole in them, when we all know that the hole is the last thing that defines it as a bagel.
The do not deserve the moniker as the best bagels above sea level any more (its on the front of the store, above the doors) because they are no better than supermarket bagels anymore.
Quality varies day to day, the are mostly underbred, are never boiled in highly alkaline water so they always look excessively pale
Whitefish spread is awesome, its imported from Acme in Brooklyn New York and is wonderful on a bagel! If you're a fan of the fishy flavor of Lox then you probably will like Whitefish salad. Do note that the Lox here is farmed (Atlantic) salmon, they don't even know what Pacific (wild salmon) is all about.
The do accept Apple Pay at the register, which is awesome. The service from Monday through Thursday is excellent however the person working the front on Friday through Sunday is mostly clueless, unhelpful and unfriendly.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0Dec 1, 2016Previous review"The Best Bagels Above Sea Level!" is their slogan and in my personal experience they certainly are a contender for that title. I've searched for great bagels for decades, as my employer's sent me scrambling thought the US on numerous business trips, because bagels always were my comfort food, having grown up with them in New York City. All those searches were rather unsuccessful as it seems that the only authentic bagels outside of New York/New Jersey is in San Francisco.
It appears that the best of the country is a bagel wasteland, only making and serving round pieces of bread that resemble bagels in looks only. The reality is that a bagel is not a round rice of bread with a hole in it. Its an anterience in texture and flavor that is not delivered by ordinary bread bakers at all.
I have been searching New Mexico for months to find a good bagel, not a fast food clone like Einstein's (bland and textureless) nor a pale imitation like a sandwich shop which I refuse to name here (but I gave a 1 star review to for its barely baked round dough blobs) and was close to giving up when I drove by Wolfe's Bagels.
The awning proudly proclaimed "The Best Bagels Above Sea Level!" which made me laugh for one black as I drove by. Then as I was two blocks away I thought maybe it would be worth checking out just to see if there was anything to that boast.
The good news:
-Best bagels I have had above sea level, for real. Closest to NYC bagels I have found west of New Jersey (yes Jersey has great bagels as well)
-The fresh bagels right out of the oven are crispy on the outside and cheer on the inside, the closest I have found to a real NYC bagel since I left he city. No, its not in the same tier as traditional bagels but its closer than anywhere else in the US that I have personally tasted.
-Acme Whitefish salad! (whitefish spread) is mind blowing for fish aficionados.
-Staff is friendly, professional and helpful
-Free WiFi
-Plenty of seating
-Big parking lot
The not so good news:
-Ambiance is between a cafeteria and a dive
-The bagels are a little on the large size (traditional bagels are about 2/3rds the size) so when the lox and other accruement are laced on to they seem a little sparse but its an illusion because of the large bagel size.
-The employees are miserable, its obvious that the current owner is something of a tyrant. This is not good because unhappy employees means unhappy clients.
Side Note:
-Its not about the water, I wish people would stop repeating that myth. All city water has been treated in one way or another for many years now. When I was a kid the NYC, water was piped in from springs in upstate so yes it used to be good but now its municipal water. You can make great bagels from municipal water if you know what you are doing.
-For a gourmet experience: Do not toast your bagels! Toasting makes inferior bagels better because it puts a crust on the outside and softens the inside. A good bagel, like these already has a crust when it comes out of the oven and the crumb has a decent chew, don't mess that up!. Toasting also melts the cream cheese so u often wind up with a mushy slidey mess, with the insides trying to slide out.
Improvements:
-Offer Pacific Lox, even if there is a small extra charge for it. Advertise that you have it.
-Advertise! The West Side does not even know that this place exists! I fact, in all my searching I have only found one person that has heard of Wolfe's so I know that the advertising and marketing process is broken or nonexistent.
-Educate your customers. Once people understand that bagels aren't just round bread, then they can value the product that you produce.
-Make the place look appealing.
-Make the employees happy. Retail outlets with relaxed, happy, friendly, jovial employees will attract a lot more customers than those who are unhappy. Customers know that the employees are a direct reflection o the owner's attitude towards them. If the owner does not respect and cherish his employees then he will think even less of his customers.
I like these bagels so much that I have been driving out of my way to pick them up and share them with my family. If you are a true bagel lover then I think you'll love these bagels as well. No one is perfect and I'm giving this place 5 stars for nor based on better bagels and good staff, if either of those changes, so will my rating. - Morgan S.Raleigh, NC1513027Jun 23, 2017
Oh my goodness. These bagels deserve a slow clap. This cream cheese deserves a slow clap too.
Let's be honest, the decor is nothing to write home about but do you really go to a bagel shop looking for fancy centerpieces and frilly art?
No! You are here for that everything bagel and that herb cream cheese! You hunt for the flavor explosion that can only come from delicious bread with everything good in the world baked on top.
Just go. You'll love it.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Jul 31, 2014
So, ABQ is not exactly known for it's bagels. But these are really good. Don't expect a true, chewy New York bagel here. These are little softer and more bread-like. But they've got a flavor to suit you, tons of cream cheese flavors, and really nice bagel sandwiches.
Best bagels in town.Helpful 2Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Sep 23, 2012
Ok, I know what you're thinking: "5 Stars for a bagel joint?!"
Yes, 5 stars for a bagel joint. I am totally weirdly picky about bagels and cream cheese and I'm fine with admitting that (actually the weirdness doesn't end with bagels, but who's counting?). This may be random, but I absolutely LOVE their veggie cream cheese. It's got little pieces of green bell pepper, celery, and carrot. Seriously, it's something to get worked up about.
Their black pepper and swiss bagels are fantastic. Maybe I'm sheltered because I'd never had one before. Don't get me wrong, I've never had a bagel I didn't like there, but this one is sooooo tasty. Anytime I eat at Einstein's the bagels that have green chile or tomatoes or the like baked into them are soggy and sad. It is absolutely not the case with Wolfe's.
You can make a veggie sandwich out of it!!! (So psyched. Can you tell?)! Add cucumbers, red onions, lettuce, and tomatoes (maybe even avocado?) and mmmmmm. Or you can go an even better route and get a NY style bagel with lox.
Trust me, you cannot go wrong with whatever you choose.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0 - Desiree W.Albuquerque, NM814Jan 21, 2017
Wolfe's has THE best breakfast bagels in town! Bagels are fresh, eggs ( real) and bacon crispy! Yum. My husband and I have been coming often after church to share this breakfast delight and gets cups of delicious coffee. The staff are always friendly.
