Wok to Walk is the absolute best at personalized noodle bowl dishes. With 100% vegan and vegetarian options, is is the best "semi-fast food" eatery on campus.
The sauces they have range from a simple teriyaki sauce to a complex (not vegan or vegetarian because it has fish oil) sweet sauce. With all of the different noodles and add-ins including the great dumplings, you could go without having the same meal twice for an entire year.
The portions are insanely large for the price. It's an amazing deal.
The staff is extremely nice and the manager Eva is a doll. I recommend this place to anyone at any time during the day.
Note: If you are vegan, remember to ask for no egg.
Sometimes I eat here up to three times a week because I work so close. It's a perfectly solid meal and very filling, and though it's not the cheapest option in the area the price is pretty good. I tend to order takeout but I have eaten in. There's not much of an aesthetic going on so there's really no advantage to eating in other than your food won't get cold from the walk to wherever you're headed.
My typical meal here consists of the egg or wheat noodles (though I've been meaning to try some other options), chicken, some kind of veggie (so far asparagus has been my favorite but they very rarely have it, so I usually go for mushroom), and the Bangkok sauce (cocoanut curry). I usually order extra sauce because I feel like they usually don't give you enough, though when you order extra they give you a lot, so be careful. Generally this meal is very filling and leaves me satisfied after dinner every time. I'll definitely be coming back here as I do most weeks, though it's not the greatest meal in the world.
On a side note, I like how they recently instituted a student discount. Though it's not much (10 percent or 15 percent, I ca't quite remember) it definitely helps.
I was actually introduced to this place by a good friend of mine who attends NYU and I absolutely fell in love with it. I was never crazy about noodles until I discovered Wok o Walk (Cool Name). The concept is pretty Simple you choose from different types of noodles (ie: egg, whole wheat) or rice, next you choose your meats or vegetable (I always get the shrimp and chicken) then you pick a sauce (Tokyo for me). I must say they give you generous portions which is cool because the food is not that cheap. What aggravates me about this place is the price of the drinks. A soda can run you $2 which has never really stopped me because i usually just buy a drink from a deli before I come here. I also agree with some of the previous reviews about the door. Every time someone opens the door in the winter I get more and more frozen. Overall this is a good place to come if your looking for a quick meal and your in union square.
It's one of my favorite places...
I always get the egg noodles, cashews and beef, with shitake mushroom, and the soy sauce (with beans i think?)
Wok to Walk is based in Amsterdam which is where I was first introduced to it by some friends. The one in NYC, its first US based location is just a smaller version of its European brethren, but with all the same good dishes served as you like. This is like high class fast food, but can be very healthy as well unlike what we are used to from your usual fast food joints.
like $2 less and i wouldnt complain. but $9 for a cardboard cup of noodles....not worth the price
This place is down the block from me so I find myself going there a lot. I guess they're a chain from Holland. Actually I saw one in Soho while I was in London too...
The concept is cool, pick one from the noodle, 2 or 3 veggies, and then a sauce. But the way the pricing works, it always ends up you pay $11 or $12 for a bowl of noodles. Now granted it's good tasting food, I'd say a step above the typical chinese takeout, but I always feel I'm still paying a bit more than I should.
Food taste 4.5 stars
Price 3 stars
Comfort 2 stars
The other thing that bothers me about this place is in winter, it's cold as hell. The door brings in a gust of cold air, so it's tough to sit and eat there. Also, and this is the real deal breaker for people with sensitive noses, despite their seeming to keep the place spic-n-span clean, it sometimes (no not all the time) has that back of the kitchen near the garbage stinky smell. That's the worse.
But the food is really good so I go back. Take-away is better, obviously!
International company on University Place lets you customize your wok made to order. Start with a meat or veggie, add noodles or rice and a sauce. I choose Beef with bangok sauce and rice.
Wokked up right in front of my eyes. The dish was flavorful coconut/curry yumminess with bits of cabbage in the rice. A small dining area with benches lets you enjoy your pretty cheap meal before walking or running off.
Nothing really special about this place and its not that good for the price. There are tons of other places in the area to have a bowl of noodle or fried rice.
My boyfriend and I stopped here to get some food to sneak into the movie theater. He ordered the egg noodles with peanuts and cashews and coconut curry sauce, and I ordered the rice noodles with tofu and vegetables in spicy thai sauce - it was not THAT spicy, but most Thai/Chinese food spots do claim spicy usually. Aside from that, it was pricey which is why it gets point off, but it was good take out food. The service was quick as well, but hopefully the owner is reading this and reducing their prices, that is the only way I'll return, since quick Thai can be caught at the famous Spice for takeout too, maybe for cheaper too.
By the way, the food was fresh and healthy, not like typical Chinese food.
Liked the design, liked the idea, but the food was really pretty disappointing, and for over $10? I could've ordered from Spice down the block and gotten better food for less - and it wouldn't have made me sick to my stomach.
PS - I got tofu and peanuts with curry sauce.
I was in Amsterdam this past summer, and the city is filled with these restaurants.. under all different names (wok to walk being one of them).. but same Orange color, same wok to order to go concept.
So when I just happened upon this one, after a random walk in Union Square, I just had to go in! Took me back to Amsterdam in a matter of seconds.
Basically you choose your protein, starch (rice or noodles), vegetable, and sauce. they wok it for you and put in a chinese takeout container.. and it comes with a canned soda too. Not too cheap, butn ot too expensive. Better than your avg fast food chinese joint, but its obviously no fine dining.
Given that I'm a wretched pauper, I really wanted to like this Uni. Place QSR which seemed to be dishing out big portions for relatively little money.
However, after having to deal with yet another young buck who hates her job and shows it, lousy digs, and mediocre, essentially fried rice that wasn't spicy as it should have been, I realized I had no obligation to like this place at all.
I like the noodles with peanuts, broccoli and teriyaki sauce.
Fast service, even at noon or 2 PM.
Rather pricey for Chinese, but consistently good and all white meat chicken.
Met up with a friend here earlier today to grab a bite. The ordering process is very simple and straight forward. Pick either a noodle type or rice type, toppings and sauce. It starts at $6 and depending on the type of topping and total number of toppings will add onto the base price. The sauce carries an additional cost and so it is a bit misleading cuz it adds up! It worked out to be almost $10 for my Wheat noodle, Tofu topping with Teriyaki sauce.
I liked my friend's order better (Rice noodle, Shrimp topping and Curry sauce) because the Teriyaki sauce made my noodles too sweet.
It's alright but I'd rather trek to Chinatown and get a bowl of Wonton Noodle Soup for less than half the price!
This place is great, well at first that is. If you like to expand you preferences, you will get bored. I promise. The food was good, but too much sauce the first time. I like their bowls, I am really into comfortable utensils, and they provide that. Good for vegetarians as well, side note.
Hmmm...The seating is horrible. Those stupid long benches might be a good decor idea, but a poor decision considering how many people eat solo on university place. A lot, btw.
A sort of pan-Asian chose your own adventure novel, their DIY menu allows you to choose a starch (noodle, rice, salad with healthy whole grain options), and then pile on your protein (steak, pork, shrimp, chicken, Tofu), plus an assortment of fresh, local veggies, and top it off from a choice of 5 sauces.
My meal was simple and delicious - tangy spicy and yummy. I got the garlic and pepper sauce and added on some hot sauce to spice it up a bit. It's clean and modern inside, with an open kitchen to see your noodles being wok-ed. Apparently it's a super popular chain in The Netherlands. It does get pricey- you add the $5 + for the noodles alone to $2.50 for protein and up to $1.50 per vegetable. But maybe it's because I eat lunch in midtown, where I begrudgingly pay $8.50 for a lousy sandwich, that I'm not too fazed by the prices.
My only suggestion is to change the name to "Wok the Wok"....and open a spot ASAP in lunch-option starved midtown. Please.
I had wanted to try this place since it opened, as every time I saunter by it smells like Asian stir fry goodness.
I've been eating like crap lately, so I ordered the vegetable base with chicken, edamame, and the oyster sauce. Basically, the vegetable base is a salad that has been stir fried, which is weird for several reasons, namely heated up lettuce. Now, I know that sometimes salads are served warm, Radicchio is often wilted in a pan to give it flavor, but when you stir fry lettuce, the result is weird. My concoction was extremely watery, because lettuce is mostly .... water. Plus, the chicken seemed not fresh, like they thawed some of that pre-cooked frozen chicken you can get at Trader Joe's. Otherwise, it was actually flavorful, a pretty big portion (couldn't finish it all), and the veg (other than the lettuce) was still crunchy, not overcooked.
If I go back, I will get a different base (i.e. noodles or rice) and not get a meat based protein. Good idea, not the greatest execution.
A build your own stir fry fast food chain imported from Amsterdam. Unfortunately, Wok to Walk isn't nearly as good as the other nearby Amsterdam import Maoz Vegetarian.
I ordered a roast pork with noodles and another vegetable or two. Ended up being like $10 and change. For lo mein. Fuck that.
Portion was big. Tasted ok. Just can't justify the price for lo mein.
Side note:
Can't they come up with a better play on the word wok than Wok to Walk? I recommend Detroit Wok City and then everyone inside is dressed up like a member of Kiss.
I think I liked it the first time I had it. I'm not sure which dish I got--something spicy. And I think the owner was serving me so he was really cool--good guy wanting to provide good service. I can really appreciate that. The concept was interesting and I was intrigued. But when I went again, I found it to be way too SALTY! Yuck. They put a ton of salt in it, like a half a cup or something. I'd rather go to Chinatown and get mouth full of straight MSG then eat there again. Sorry but I feel the concept is good but the people actually making the food have no taste or shall I say no taste buds. Food is not made with care and it is felt. Unless the owner is working there all the time, I'd rather not waste my money.
On a miserable rainy Wednesday - my umbrella and I ventured out to forage for lunch - straight to Wok to Walk.
The "Wok" area is encased in glass, and I could smell the shop as I was walking up to it. (A good sign) It was crowded.
Tiny shop, which is compromised by the massive benches and tables. (what were the designers thinking???)
I ordered The Veggie Dish with shrimp & tofu and oyster sauce. I watched it being made. (bonus points for lunchtime cooking theater) for $11.27 I got a big bowl full of stir fried goodness.
I'll add Wok to Walk to my lunch rotation.
They get bonus points for delivery and being a dutch company!
Utter crap.
I'm sorry but the food is over priced, greasy, the "toppings" are ridiculously small and the after taste and feeling after you eat there is as if you got hit by a train. What a waste of space.
Wok to Walk is owned by russian, staffed by Mexicans and a few Japanese kids. The place is clean, has a very modern design, and works on the idea that people are dumb and will pay anything for something as long as it sounds shiny and new. I wandered into the store, saw the prices and I didn't want to pay it but, alas, you have to try things once. The base rate isn't posted on the menu - just the price for each "condiment" which is brocolli, edamene, etc etc. The price ranges from 1.50 to 2 dollars for a "veggie" or "meat". The cook the food right in front of you and you'll notice that the "veggie" portion, although it looks like it comes in a big cup, is actually just a small portion from that cup. And the chicken is stringy, small, and unresponsive. It's like they specifically ordered the runtiest and sickest birds to be the meat at their restaurant. So pathetic.
If you like throwing away your money and want to keep over priced places in business, come here. If you actually have a pulse and might qualify as a human being, avoid. Go to Big Enchillada which has better food and is cheaper. Your future selves will thank you.
BIAS ALERT: I ate at Wok To Walk in Amsterdam in a post-Hunter S. Thompson style haze on New Years Eve. My view of this place is a bit more romanticized than it should be as it was an amazing night with my girlfriend and just an amazing time in general.
So....This place isn't very good. After you finish your food you'll probably be sitting around waiting to get sick or have diarrhea...BUT IT DOESN'T COME! It's magical non-diarrhea greasy gross Chinese food. However, it could be the absolute best thing you can eat before bed after a long session of boozing out.
Here's the game plan: Spend the good part of a sunny and beautiful early afternoon REALLY hitting the booze hard. I'm talking guzzling here. After you have completely lost your mind, stop into Wok To Walk and grab a noodles with chicken and Saigon sauce. The peppery sauce will mask all of the taste which is a good thing. Then leave and walk down to Washington Square Park while eating said wok food and stumble around saying rude things to NYU girls while you try not to get food all over your clothes. That my friends, is the life.
Now that my best friend is telling people about my spot. I better give it up! This place gives me the old vibe of my college days. And yes if you went to Bard you looked forward to Mongolia Grill Day! I love the pricing and the amount of food. I always save it for lunch the next day! And love the choices of items to make you dish as well as drink selection. So there my secret is out!
staff is super friendly and caring. that is enough to come back even though the food is just ok. its relatively healthy cooking if you stick to just the veggie add ons.
This place is wayyyy overpriced but I actually think if you order the right thing, and are rich, it can be pretty awesome. First of all do NOT get the vegetable base. This is not the place to be healthy. As a previous Yelper noted, the vegetable base is basically cooked lettuce/salad, which is both GROSS and WEIRD (I ate it during an evening class and everyone was looking at me like I was sick).
I typically go for the lunch special, with brown rice, chicken, broc, and Hot Asia sauce. This sauce is realllly spicy and delicious. I've tried a few others and found them kind of boring, but this one makes me sweat just the tiniest bit, which I love. The portion looks deceptively small, but it's actually pretty filling. This place is kitschy and expensive for what it is, and it is definitely not authentic Chinese food. If you love Americanized "Asian" food and need a quick bite on Daddy's dime (and they take credit cards!), this is a great spot.
So I wanted to try this place because some of my friends first tried it when they went to Amsterdam and kept talking about it. When I learned there was one in NYC I made a point to try it out....I'm sure it is a lot different than the one in Amsterdam, but I think my friends hyped it up too much...I didn't think it was that special and I don't plan on returning. For the price, the food is not worth it. Maybe the food would have been better if I got it in one of those cool to go boxes. Anyways, I got the whole wheat noodles (soba) with chicken and the black bean and garlic sauce. The seating is limited because it is a small space, I guess this emphasizes how you should take your food to go.
The food is ok, but the price doesn't reflect on the portion of food. Fast-food restaurant with above average price + not worth what you pay for.
There are a lot of reviews that range from poor to good, but one thing seems to link them all and that is the price of a meal. The price for the food here, considering what it is, is outrageous.
To give you a little idea, the base price for your carbohydrate (noodles or rice) is $5.90. While yes, this does include the fact that they cook it for you in a wok, you still need to add ingredients since none of them come included in this price which is insane. All the meat proteins are $2.50 each and the vegetables are $1.50 each. This means that if you wanted rice, chicken and broccoli your meal would be $10 dollars. If you were to add anything else the price jumps considerably.
While there is no discounting the fact that they use fresh vegetables (most of which they say are organic which means absolutely nothing to me) there is no way they should be charging $1.50 for broccoli.
If you go to any Chinese restaurant during lunch hours you can get a full on meal, with soup and a drink for around $8. You would pay almost double that price here if you include the drink.
I wish I could give Wok to Wok 2.5 stars because the food wasn't bad (although it was far from jaw dropping), it was just grossly overpriced. In the end, I will never go back here because I could essentially obtain the same meal somewhere else for half the price.
Checked this place out last night and it wasn't bad. The concept is that you can select a starch (i.e. noodles, jasmine rice or brown rice) and pick your proteins & vegetables, and your sauce (i.e. curry, teriyaki, spicy garlic, sweet and sour, etc). The base price is $5.90 for the starch and a few veggies, then you pay between $1.50 to $2.50 per additional veggie or protein. It was good, but the cost adds up very quickly. I would go back if I felt like having custom made fried rice for a take out meal.
MUST BE THE WORST CHINESE EVER.
I had a hungover craving for noodles and this placed look cool to try. DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY. It was overpriced, unflavored, and the portion was so unfilling that I actually felt less hungry looking at the box. The spicy asia sauce is just spicy on top of noodles, it has no flavor and the noodles were a sloppy mush. If you are trying to avoid bad asian, stay far away from this place.
I had to try Wok to Walk today after walking past it last week. I had a jasmine rice, beef, mushroom, tofu, bamboo shoot, and teriyaki sauce combo. It came out to $15, but it was so delicious! The rice was hardly oily and everything tasted amazing. The price is a little high for a mostly rice dish, but the ingredients were very high quality and tasty. I will definitely be going again.
Delivered fast but pretty greasy!
i can't believe this place is in business. in a city with real resturants on every corner. and our own wonderful china town. this place appears on delivery .com.. charges for a delivery, has a minimum order which is too large and costly for a place that has no food. just woked stuff that prob. dosn't require a cook. really the food is so limited. i just read the menu and didn't even order anything. i'm still mad they are trying to sell themselfs off as a place to get good food .. hah
