One of the Business' Favorite Reviews What's This?
Full disclosure: I am ponying up the full five stars for Wogie's because I'm a Philly sports fan that just moved to NYC and it's important to me that I have a place that's guaranteed to have the Phillies game on.
Obviously for my first trip I ordered a whiz wit' and several rounds of [Yuengling Traditional] Lager. I actually like Wogie's wiz better than the stuff in the "real" Philly joints; it tasted like it was made from sharp cheddar instead of the usual Velveeta substance at Pat's.
The bartender was terrific and friendly, and it was nice to shoot the bull with some other displaced Philly fans and find a place to watch future games. One of the guys at the bar mentioned that for Eagles games and Phils playoff games, one should show up at least 2 hours early for a seat.
One minor critique: I didn't see a roast pork and broccoli rabe sandwich on the menu. Seeing as this is my favorite Philly sandwich, I hope that the chef might consider looking into adding it.
i can only speak to their delivery -
waffle cheese fires - yum, yum, yum and warm upon arrival
chicken wings hot - these suckers are damn good and warm upon arrival
delivery is fast
food is pretty cheap
when you're in the mood for hung-over fat ass delivery food - ring them up. you will not be disappointed.
Tasty but overpriced waffle fries are the best thing that Wogie's has going for it...though I admit that I didn't try the cheesesteak, which I heard is pretty darn good.
But this "sports" bar is poorly designed, with no space for mingling or conversation, and the four television sets all sit in the four corners of the bar, so you can't really watch more than one game at a time comfortably.
The staff is friendly and the beers range from $3-$5. But the service is pretty slow.
It's a Philadelphia bar, which is great for fans of the eastern PA teams, but I won't be going back anytime soon. Especially when the $10 cover goes into effect just before the Philly games start.
Bar & grill type place where the most basic things like burgers and fries are done right.
I chowed down on 'whiz & grease' this past weekend with none other than the (possibly late) great, Daniel S. Sitting at the bar is fast, cheesesteaks are perfect for lazy days sitting around recanting stories that would surely make Gramma back handspring in her grave while sipping Yuengling. Service was fast/friendly and not naggy, which I love. The steak is shaved, and they give you options of american, provolone, or whiz. I'm not sure I can tolerate whiz on anything but devlins and ritz crackers, so I went with American and snagged a few fries, which I may have preferred to be smothered in chili and/or whiz devlins. Another day, Wogies. Another day,
Good cheesesteaks. Crowd situation is a bit more annoying than the norm for a niche sports bar. If you're a Philly fan, you should at least check it out.
I'll overlook that they're Phillies fans for the amazing bar food, which includes the best wings in the city.
I only got a steak to go here so I didn't get to experience the bar scene although I would have loved to. The Phils decor reminded me of home. This steak was pretty good. The roll was right where it needed to be. The meat was ok, this steak mainly lacked proportion. A real Philly steak is loaded to brim with meat. Also, barely any onions. I had to hunt and peck to find them.
I've never had a cheesesteak in Philly but I don't see it being much better than Wogies. I order takeout from here quite a bit, the atmosphere at the restaurant is a bit bizarre, which I believe has been pointed out. On to the food!
Cheesesteak- Great bread that isn't rolled in grease like 99 Miles, plenty of well seasoned meat and copious amounts of Wiz, the perfect hangover cure. The variations are also great but can be overkill i.e The Atomic Avalanche
Waffle Fries- Some of the best bar fries in the city and they never arrive soggy like takeout fries so often do., A huge portion and if you're really feeling crazy get the cheese on the side.
The Pookie- awesome sandwich and my roommates favorite., Hero roll with buffalo chicken fingers, melted provolone and ranch dipping sauce on the side. Sometimes the fingers could be a little crispier but I let it slide.
Garbage Bread- I had this once and wasn't impressed but it isn't their focus.
Wings- kind of expensive and I would say mediocre but one of the few take out buffalo wing options in the Village.
Go to Wogies!
This place is highly worth it for anyone looking for an awesome cheesesteak. But, if you're from Philly, it's mecca. A very Philly bar, complete with cheap Yuengling, this place is an amazing spot to watch Philly sports games. When the birds score a TD, everyone sings the fight song. Awesome.
This is my starting point for the 2 food crawls I had this summer and it was perfect. Great outdoor seating, very cheap booze, and the garbage bread is awesome. Id go here to hangout with friends on a weekend afternoon anytime, watch a ballgame and kill my bar food cravings.
Service is a bit slow, but the Philly cheese is so yummy :)
very good price, it's bar food :)
Never been inside Wogies but order delivery from them quite a bit. Sometimes (and by sometimes I mean all the time) I get a hankering for some buffalo wings. Not too many places to order wings from around me (which I find weird) so Wogies has been added to my speed dial.
The wings are OK but a little soggy. I think I've been spoiled with wings in general and my expectations are just too high now. Stay with the Buffalo (the BBQ and Parmesan ain't all that).
I'm partial to their pizza steaks above their regular cheese steaks but that's really just a preference.
On a separate note, their delivery has always been speedy.
I really wish I could give this place a higher rating but I take my wings seriously.
I don't really know what constitutes "good" or "authentic" Philly food. To be perfectly honest, I'm not sure that a stinky pile of ground beef with onions and cheese whiz could ever be considered "good", but oh, my, dear, sweet, fucking, jesus...
IT IS.
Sometimes you just need a lunch that consists of a gigantic cheesesteak sandwich, a Bud, and an order of waffle fries. Sometimes you feel like you need to puke afterwards, but that's probably just because I polished all that food off in about five minutes, so sometimes you order another beer with lunch to wash it all down again.
Anyways, it's near-ish to my hood, the staff is friendly without being obnoxious, they're always open, and sometimes when you're sitting at the bar and a slight gay hipster (gipster?) wafts up to the bar and orders a basket of wings, a beer and some fries, it's just nice to know that you aren't the only faggot in the world chowing down on whiz and grease.
Of course, some would say that "chowing down on whiz and grease" is ALL us faggots do.
It's either empty, or has one mentally ill person sitting at the bar, or else is mysteriously full of drunk, overweight white people eating greasy cheez whiz on white rolls and trying to enjoy life through alcohol, perhaps drawn by the magazine clippings on the window that imply that Brad Pitt eats here (on closer examination, it says nothing of the kind). Brad Pitt doesn't eat here.
Place: Decent sized area with lots of seating. There is a bar area as well.
People: I came here around 1:00 pm so there really wasn't anyone there for me to comment on the crowd
Price: I can't remember the price off the top of my head but I remember it being avg for cheese steak with onion and mushroom w/ provolone cheese.
Food: What I did like about this place was the fact that the bread seemed homemade. Their meat was thinly sliced and the cheese was nicely melted on top. What I didn't like was the fact that they didn't put enough meat in my sub because I had to peel off the top edge of the bread so I wouldn't be eating a bread to meat 2:1 ratio.
Overall I would give this place a shot and I probably will too to see if there is any improvement
It's NY's Philly Bar.. Really enjoy the cheesesteaks here.. Fries are good.. We went with the cheese fries and gravy pictured.. I have heard the wings are worth getting also..
It's a really good sandwich.. The big difference between this place and a cheesesteak you get in Philly is the bread is too toasty.. Philly bread is soft and chewy.. This is a little crunchy..
This is my neighborhood and this is one of the best neighborhood bars. If you dont mind that they are Philly fans, this is a great place to watch a game as the crowd is animated and the service ROCKS!
The philly cheese steaks are a definite order when you go. And, dont forget to get the Wogie's crackers.
The owners always make the place, and Aaron Hoffman (who named the bar after his dad), is your favorite all around loveable guy who anyone would love as their neighbor.
I eat, breath, and sleep Philly sports but being in NYC I wasn't able to watch all my Eagles, Phillies or Flyers games...Until I discovered this place. The owner of wogies has a Philly history and brings his passions for the city of brotherly love to New York: Sports, Cheesesteaks, Waffle Fries, and Beer.
The greatest part about hanging out here is being with real Philadelphia sports fans. This is the kind of place that I feel comfortable going to solo because I know I'll be slapping hands and singing the Eagles fight song with everyone in the bar. If you're not a die hard Philadelphia fan I would recommend not going here during an Eagles game or Philadelphia playoff game because it gets tight. But so much fun!
The important thing to know about Wogies is that you don't have to be a sports fan to hang out here. The beer is cold and cheap (YUENGLING MUGS!), food is delicious, and the staff is always friendly. A great hang.
Oh the greasy goodness that is Wogies. I'm not from Philly, I can't make judgments on the authenticity, but I can tell you that my stomach is so happy and full after I roll out of this place. I always get the cheese steak wid wiz and wid onions. Get the waffle fries, and dunk it in the wiz before attacking the cheese steak, and throw in a Yuengling to get the full effect. The staff is always attentive and so nice. My fiance and I aren't even regulars and the bartender completely remembered us from the last time, and gave us a free round.
If I'd been following my usual procedure when checking out a place for the first time, I would have ordered the cheesesteak, as that's clearly the signature dish here. However, I felt I'd been eating too much red meat lately, so I opted for the chicken cheesesteak, albeit with Wiz (Cheese Wiz), and onions, to get a little closer to the real deal. It was good, and the waffle fries and beer made a great accompaniment. I wouldn't hesitate to return.
I've been going here for a while and I always get the buffalo chicken cheese steak and I've always loved it. Well I went earlier this week and it was just weird. The menu looked different, the waitress was someone I'd never seen before, and she wouldn't put blue cheese on my sandwich. WTF? She give me blue cheese dressing on the side, but it just wasn't the same. I love this place, but I don't know if I'll be returning. And their fries have never been good, they're thin and tasteless.
Wogie's chili cheese fries are an achievement of immense proportions! I ate them twice last week. I would eat them weekly were it not for my living some 150 blocks away, and for my fear that a single helping contains more than fivefold the daily recommended caloric intake (which inhibits my ability to recklessly enjoy other purely fatty foods.)
The cheesesteaks are also on point, but as I feel that I've never had a truly legitimate cheesesteak, I can't say whether it was great in comparison (though it certainly tasted unbeatable.) It is undoubtedly the best cheesesteak I've ever had. And the bread!! The BREAD!! In my personal heaven, I will rest my head on a pillow of Wogie's bread.
Beware the double cheese helping...especially with Wiz. It will drown your sandwich!!! The fountain Coke is a bit too watered down, for my taste. A poor mixture. I should've had a beer, as usual.
If you're looking for a lot of meat and cheese squished between two lightly toasted pieces of bread, you've come to the right place. I came here for lunch, which I now realize was a mistake. Despite having great reviews and being recognized by this place and that place, at 12:45 on a Friday afternoon, Wogies was empty. Despite the emptiness, the service was somewhat slow and lackluster. I'm not saying it was bad, but everything was done at a very reduced pace (they were probably saving their energy for the inevitable after-work rush). Lesson number 1, bars are not that fun during the daylight hours.
Since they're known for their Philly Cheese Steaks, that's what I got. And according to Philly fashion, the cheese I got was cheese wiz. Lesson number two, if you don't like cheese wiz as a kid, you probably won't like it later on in life. The meat was plenty, but completely un-marinated and pretty flavorless. I've never been to Philly, and maybe that's what it supposed to be like, but it just doesn't do it for me.
Overall, I'd give this place a 3.5, and probably would have bumped it up to 4 if the service was better. Their menu looked like it had some other interesting things to try, and I don't doubt that the place gets pretty busy and much more fun as the sun goes down. But as I'm usually only here for lunch, and there are just so many lunch spots to try in this area, there's a good chance I won't be back.
Been going to this local joint since it opened when there were not really any PCS places in town- not on par with Genos or Pats but a solid 3.5 as compared to the over salty Carl's on 3rd or the bland over cooked 99 miles (far) "from"Philly - if you know what i mean.
The Californian is my fav with jalapenos, and the wings aren't bad. The clientele is pretty straight up sports fans - with a J. Simpson hottie thrown in from time to time. Only drawback is you'll smell like steamed meat if you spend your afternoon there watching the game. The service is slow especially when there's a game on, but what do expect when the owner is a Philly sports fan.
This place is fantastic. Good (cheap beer), affordable tasty food and really good service.
If you heart is in decent shape order the cheesesteak served over a bed of waffle fries.
Although a regular throughout the fall and winter months, I somehow failed to come here even once during the spring. When I did come back, the cheesesteak was much improved (less skimpy on the filling), and our waitress immediately recognized my boyfriend and I and seemed genuinely happy to see us again.
So I went back again a couple of weeks later looking for a very low-key place to hang out on my birthday, and we had a different waitress who also recognized us and cheerfully welcomed us back - and who, after hearing it was my birthday, comped all of our beer.
Suffice it to say, I really can't think of anything more to ask for here.

Wogie's is basically one of the best places ever, so I'm always a little surprised by how empty it… Read more »
My friend was in the mood for wings, so she yelped "wings" and found this place, and so we went... excellent choice! Atmosphere was really nice, super comfy seats, super nice waiters, awesome prices. I had the cheese steak, which was delicious and filling, and my friend had her wings, which she really enjoyed. We also got regular fries (we were feeling too poor to spend a dollar extra on waffle fries) but they were SO GOOD. I cannot describe how good they were. They were the same thickness and consistency of mcdonald's fries, tasted a little similar, but were BETTER. They kicked the shit out of mcdonald's fries, pretty much (And yes, I absolutely love mcdonalds fries and can't help it).
I will definitely return. *rubs belly*
Great food - in my book it takes a backseat to 99 Miles and Carl's in the NY cheesesteak rankings, but everything is great. I like the bleu cheese dressing here, good wings, cool outdoor seating. Its in my neighborhood so I eat here a LOT.
Different than the cheesesteaks in Philly -- dare I say, better?
Maybe not, but by far my favorite in the city -- better than 99 Miles, Carl's, etc. Been going here for almost five years now and have never been disappointed -- great staff, delicious artery-clogging sandwiches, perfectly crisp waffle fries and a range of good beer.
For me: cheesesteak with onions (or wid', whatever you're supposed to say) mushrooms and Cheez Whiz, waffle fries, a side of buffalo sauce (a must!) and a Sly Fox IPA -- or a Yuengling.
In the last year or so, they've added a bunch of "speciality sandwiches," but I stick to the original -- though the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich is pretty good too.
Plenty of seating during the summer, when there are tables outside; otherwise, can be hit or miss. Anymore than four people and it may be tough to find room -- aside from the normal four-person booths, there's only one big booth in the back.
And avoid on big Philadelphia sports days -- i.e. Eagles, Phillies and Flyers -- unless you're a fan, obviously.
I had delivery and eat-in and both are delish. I have the cheese steak and waffle fries every time and they do not disappoint. Great hangover food.
I grew up in NJ which is divided up roughly 2/3 New York and 1/3 Philly. While I was firmly under the NY shadow (e.g., Yankee, Giants, Rangers fan), I always had a soft spot for Philadelphia. Aside from the Eagles, the Flyers and cream cheese, I'm pretty much a fan of the city - especially when it comes to cheesesteaks.
While cheesesteak places have multiplied over the past couple years in NY, they never quite feel like Philly. So I was psyched to check out Wogie's as it's known as a Philly bar. Sure enough, the Phillie game was on the TV and some of the patrons were intently watching. But the Philliness of the place was tempered a bit by the fact it's in the West Village. So much like NJ, this bar is divided...call it 2/3 Philly bar and 1/3 gay bar...not that that's a bad thing...I mean, Donnovan McNabb needs somewhere to unwind with some beers before he throws up and calls it a night.
Okay, so onto the cheesesteak. Just so-so. Agree with Carly S that they're a bit skimpy on the steak and Wiz. The flavor of the meat and cheese is good though. The roll is nice and soft. All in all, this one does in a pinch but I'll take Carl's and 99 Miles to Philly instead (even if they might be less Philly)
The waffle fries are really good. Best I've had in the city. Admirably greaseless. Hear great things on the wings - will have to give them a try next time I'm there.
I've been looking for a good place to get wings since I moved, and this was the first of my actual forays. The wings were so, so, so good. I got the medium, and it was the perfect level of spiciness. Absolutely delicious. The bleu cheese dressing wasn't so great, but that's okay; I never really use the stuff anyway. The fries were really good, too. Some of the best fries I've ever had, actually. I don't know what it was about them, but they were amazing. Especially with ketchup. Now I want some more of them, hmm.
Anyway! Great food, very reasonable prices, and really comfortable seats. The inside looks a lot more swank than it should, all things considered, but it's awesome. I will definitely come back when I'm in the mood for wings again -- or for a cheesesteak. That shiz looked delish. Also, the beers seemed pretty cheap, $3 for Yuengling. I ordered a soda instead, so I don't know if the other beers were as cheap or what, but $3 Yuengling is a-okay by me.
I don't know what an authentic philly cheesesteak is supposed to taste like.
But I am loyal to what makes my taste buds Yelp in joy.
I've been here several times and I always order the philly with onions and Cheez Whiz + a basket of waffle fries. This makes my entire day.
If you're in the mood for sinfully delicious grub, go in and grab a seat. Ignore the fact that you're in a dark dive bar with sticky menus. Just order and watch your food disappear.
Wogies is a good place to chow down on comfort food in a neighborhood that isn't really known for pub grub.
They are known for their cheese steaks, and they are pretty good, but I like the chili fries more. There's always a game on the TV, but I would suggest sitting outside, unless you're into the game. It's usually hot inside and there isn't any circulation.
Fantastic food and staff. If you're a Philly/Eagles/Flyers/Sixers fan and you're visiting NYC, you absolutely HAVE to come see this place.
The cheesesteak uses very good bread, and they saute their meat and onions very well, as they should. The wings are much better than most places in NYC, and their Yuengling specials just remind me of home.
We stopped by this place today as we took the path into the city and didnt want to walk up to the 50s block to Shorty's.
The place wasn't bad, a little small and very busy, we had to wait a while to be seated outside, inside was not air conditioned and with the crowd would have been too miserable to eat.
We went during happy hour (Cheap bud lite and yuengling), however we went with the White ale they had available. The waitress didnt know the exact brand for me when I asked, but it was a very refreshing beer none the less.
The cheesesteak is more chopped then shortys and not as much meat (altho extra meat is avail on the menu), and the steaks were big enough for two of us to share one for a light lunch.
We also tried the "garbage bread", which I recommend if you are into italian cured meats, my friends liked it, Im not big on those types of meats though so it wasn't anything huge to me.
Id go back to this place and recommend it to others, but Id def suggest shorty's over wogies.
When we were there, they ran out of their famous CHEESE STEAK BREAD, so I had mine pureed and stuck between the sides of a Kaiser roll. Not quite the same, but still tastey. We sat outside, for maybe the last time this year.
The ambience was fine. They had NOW I WANNA BE YOUR DOG on the jukebox. The Redsox were losing on television. The waitress with legs that went all the way from her hips to her ankles. The waffle fries were as tasty as my cheesesteak burgerette. It's a nice place to while away some time. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers, different bar every week!
So this is one of my favorite places in the city.
The people who work here are friendly, work hard, and basically give the place the kind of atmosphere that keeps me coming back whenever I have the chance to.
And there is this sandwich that I'm crazy about... called the Pookie. I'm not kidding I will stomp my feet like a little child to get whoever I'm out with to go here at 2:30a before the kitchen closes just to get a Pookie in my belly.
I get it... the other reviews point out that cheesesteaks just aren't the same in NYC. Ok, but I've had the cheesesteaks here and they're also very good.
This place gets five stars from me because:
- great food
- $3 drafts
- a TV easily seen from every seat
- don't have to get dresed up
If you're not "going out" going out... what more do you need?
Wogie's is definitely one of those places you can call your local pub. In fact, my friend frequents here on a regular basis, and one night, a group of us met here over cheap beers and fried bar food. Wogie's is small and cozy. It really has only several booths, and about six chairs at the bar. We grabbed the seats at the bar, and the pretty and friendly bartender serviced our orders. By the time I left, I was filled up on blue moon's and cheese waffle fries. I'm not into fried foods, but Wogie's serves up a decadent batch for those who are into fatty foods. I could see myself here again, primarily to meet up with friends for cheap deals and good company.
