I love the petting zoo! The daily activities that are available here include local and regional animals that you would find in western North Carolina - no lions or tigers at this zoo - only the exotic creatures you may find in the woods behind your house.  I love Hey Day in the fall and the daily activities with Otter feeding or petting a barred Owl.  And you already know about the petting zoo...

Ok so this is a true nature center...small zoo. I bought a season pass for the family after one visit and my boy never tires of visiting. We have paid for it over and over with wonderful visits. Bring a picnic lunch.  Find the old Farmall tractor, see the chickens, bears, foxes, snakes, otters, wolves...and find the trail in back.  A really nice walk.

This is a must for kids who live in the region.

My son loves this place, and why not? You get to pet goats and sheep up  close and personal and if you're lucky one will try to jump over you.

The Nature Center has a very good variety of wildlife with wolves and beavers, snakes and all sorts of things. It's reasonable, admission wise, and we spent at least an hour checking it out. I'd definitely come back.

So if everyone comes to Western North Carolina for the nature, why isn't this place more crowded? It's pretty cool. Learn about the flora and fauna from khaki-clad earnest young people and try to avoid all the animal puns ("Howl-o-ween" anyone?)

The coolest part is the room with the nocturnal animals. They've manipulated the light schedule so that when it's daytime in the world (and visitors are actually there), the possums and owls and so forth are active. I'm sure the good people at PETA would go berzerk about this sortof thing, but my kids and I have heard lots of these creatures in the middle of the night, but never seen them. It was excellent.

Not exactly a zoo but better in many ways. It's smaller than your average zoo so it's not an all day affair. We were in and out in a couple of hours. My three year old ran around the whole place...didn't need a stroller. The otters were adorable and it was interesting to see some of the native animals common in this area (wolves, foxes, black bears etc).

This place was pretty great and it was nice to see some of the animals out in the sun and unbothered by the visitors and screaming kids. The coyotes even seemed excited to see some of the younger ones hanging over the fence and by "excited" I mean, they may have been hoping for a finger snack. What I did not like, was seeing some grown woman whining to her father that she never gets a good photo of the peacock, so the two of them harassed it and cornered it until it displayed its feathers then circled it like vultures taking mediocre photos. When I told a woman at the front desk that there were people harassing the peacock, she patronizingly said "well he's very tame so I don't think he minds" - I'm sorry lady but my cat is tame but strangers could still corner and harass her into a fit . So, aside from the ignorant and irresponsible woman at the front desk who should be fired for condoning animal cruelty, the place was pretty neat.
