I have said on Yelp many times, OK maybe once that "If it's free, it's for me!" So one day I decided to check out the Witte with my dad and the kids on a freebie day. What a treat it was!

We sat and looked at all the Texas animal and habitation. I was in awe with each animal. I was making more giddy noises than my four year old! The Edwards Aquifer exhibit is a must see. I now understand what the whole business of recharging the zone means. In Maine, we don't have any problems with water, so this was very educational.

We got to see a great presentation on old slide movies and the DNA display was simply amazing. The Witte is a great place for parents and children alike. My four year old loved building with the stone blocks upstairs while I toured the art portion.

We may become members or we may just wait for the next freebie day. Either way, we are heading back.

It's not a bad place for the kids. Hell, I even found the treehouse interesting. Maybe that's because I'm immature. But by and large, this is a museum for children, so don't expect a lot out of it. It features a lot of interactive exhibits. I went to the Da Vinci exhibit this past weekend, and it was pretty neat. They did a good job making interactive stuff.

But yeah, the Texas ecology exhibit sucks.

I went to the Witte Museum a couple of weeks ago and it was lacking. . .

The Witte didn't hold my interest.  They are in between major exhibits and only had a few local flavor exhibits.  Having grown up in Texas, it wasn't anything I hadn't seen before.

If you have children, they have a fun little children's area where they can learn about air pressure, pulley cables, music, weather, and more.  I even had more fun here than in the rest of the museum!

I'll have to update this once I go to their next major exhibit.  I'm excited about it and hopefully it'll be as good as it sounds: The Genius of Leonardo.  It's supposed to be a "hands on" exhibit of machines built from Leonardo da Vinci's drawings.  It's going to take place between June 21st and September 7th of 2008.

Currently, admission is free on Tuesdays from 3 pm until 8 pm.

I went to the Witte Museum for the "Body Worlds" exhibit, which was awesome by the way. I had paid $20 for the exhibit, so I figured I'd use that money into good use and walk around the actual Witte Museum which I guess is supposed to be a historical walk-through into Texas and its past.
I did not enjoy it whatsoever. Save your money! If you want to see an exhibit of plasticized animals and plants, just go to your nearest Cabela's.
There were also random live animals that did not spark my interest. Again, it was animals that could be seen in your local pet store.

The only positive thing that came out of this was the outside!! lol, There was a very nice park - good place to hang out and have a picnic.

A close family member recently had their wedding at the Witte.  The final product turned out wonderful however, it wasn't without its challenges.  She was assigned two different staff members to work with which probably isn't unusual due to normal turnover.  The first one was very communicative and kept in touch, the second wasn't so much.  I will say overall they worked hard to make things work out even when we had to change the venue to another outdoor location due to rains they had the day before and the morning of the wedding.  A big plus is they have two large rooms next to the courtyard that you can also host your reception and as a fall back plan in case of bad weather.  I would recommend the location to hold a wedding, just go in knowing that you will need to stay on top of things a little more than some other locations.

As mentioned by I think every other review on here, it is a great museum for kids, but I want to reiterate, more for big kids...the I'm not little enough for the Children's Museum anymore, but not old enough to appreciate the McNay kind of big kids.Lots of hands on type stuff all throughout. I got to check out the Genius of Leonardo exhibit while it was in town which was very very cool. Check their website...I know there is one day (Tuesday I think??) where they offer free admission.
