Lovely beach! TONS of free parking and it was pretty dead at noon on a hot summer Sunday. Clean, easy to get to, and spacious.
However, if you are looking to actually swim, you can't here if it's red tide/hurricane season. On the weekend of 8/23/09 there were signs posted and the lifeguards (not sure why they even have them) will tell you to get out of the water if you go in deeper than your calves.

I agree with everything Julia and Dan wrote!
It's just a short drive from Revere Beach, but cleaner, less people, and more family-friendly. There's plenty of parking and you don't have to worry about the debauchery or the crowds at Reveah!

Any beaches within a 1/2 hour drive of Boston need a qualifier: They are within a 1/2 hour drive of Boston!
For a beach within a 1/2 hour drive of Boston, this is one of the better ones. Bad things first: there is seaweed EVERYWHERE, so you can't really lay near the water cuz it's gross and there's bugs; it's all in the water too. Also, there is pretty much no breeze.
You can go IN the water though! There were lots of people in the water, which I would assume means you will not get diseases from feces in the water. (Looking at you, Quincy.) There are also waves, whoa. And sand that is not full of rocks.
All in all not bad for Boston.
It's a city beach for city people. You can drive there and park for free, or take mass transit, or walk there from Eastie. If you need some sun in a hurry, there's no reason to leave the penninsula.

Beautiful beach great for swimming and surfing! Clean It is unfortunate that Kim K decided to visit our beautiful winthrop beach during rip tide, Normally the water is swimable and quite refreshing!
My Grandma has lived just a block away from Winthrop Beach my entire life. I go here for the sun, not the water. For a walk, not a swim. To sit on the wall and write or read, or just for a walk with better scenery than the firehouse or .
I have always liked to take an after dinner walk down to the beach, sometimes walking all the way out to the breakers, it's usually pretty empty- which is nice. You can walk uninterrupted for as long as you like. Even when the weather is nice you seldom have to share much of the beach with anybody else.

Winthrop beach certainly isnt South Beach, Miami but its a perfect little local spot untouched by tourists and trash a like...well ok tourists.
There is sand here and there, and a lot of little rocks, so you may need aqua shoes, but its worth just relaxing here as it almost never gets crowded. Bring food and beverage though as there is nothing on the beach itself, unless you go one street over to shirley st. The walk along shore drive is nice, but i really wish dog owners would die...they rarely pick up after pooch, and a lot of pooches seem to be large, therefore leaving large turds on the sidewalk.
Its nice that dogs are banned from the beach though, i mean who wants to sit in a litter box?
The breakers (aka 5 sisters) is fun to walk out on during low tide, just dont get stuck there! its quiet, its relaxing, its a no frills beach.
