Beer. It is all about beer now. Wine is fine but beer is...super.
Winterport Winery has introduced a new beer under its Penobscot Bay Brewery label. Since Spring of '09 they've introduced two new beers: Old Factory Whistle Ale, which is a Scottish-style ale, and a blonde ale, Whig St Ale.
I've got a serious crush on Old Factory Whistle Ale, which is a lot for me as I'm not the sort to fall head over heels in love with anything. But there's something understated about OFWA. It is a simple, slightly-sweet and mellow red ale made with, according to their website, "crystal, pale, chocolate and Munich malts with a dose of roasted barley resulting in a complex mixture of the toasty flavors of caramel malt and sweetness. " They also use English Kent Golding hops, which are more typically used in - guess what? - English Pale Ale. The result is exceptionally smooth and drinkable with subtle hops, and, arguably, atypical of red ale. So some of the snots on http://beeradvocate.com don't like its murky color...I don't know about you, but when I'm drinking out of a bottle, murk be damned, it is all about the flavor and whether or not I like it. And I like it.
For not even a farthing, you too can try the goods before you make the commitment to a whole bottle by stopping by the Winery's tasting room for a free sniff.
Oh yeah. And there's wine too. You can taste it. But why bother when there's tasty beer afoot? -

Nice locally made wine.
We have purchased wine from the Winterport Winery multiple times and enjoyed it.
I like the blueberry wine, which tastes similar to wine made from grapes. I didn't care for the cranberry wine.
They also sell an assortment of cheese and gifts. -

If your ever heading through winterport stop in and check them out. They produce excellent fruit wine. Apple, blueberry, pear, raspberry, etc.
This is a small but very classy place, stop in and try a sampling, you wont regret it. Also check into their "pairings" classes. Food is prepared and paired with appropriate wine styles to compliment. Very fun and educational.
