I found this little Russian Food mart around the corner from Kabul, after lunch one afternoon. Out of curiousity, I popped in to check it out.
Most of the packaging and food stuffs were in Russian, so keep that in mind if you don't read Cyrillic. That said, I could make out a wide variety of indie-style-grocer goods, from breads, canned vegetables, sweets of all sorts to kefirs and chilled drinks. I ended up buying a few Russian bottled sodas to try.
I'd be back if I were at Kabul again. 4 Stars!
Don't go there. They are cheaters at that store. They sell honey of the "Medved" brand - that's not honey but sugary syrop. When you tell them about this - they are extremely rude to you and never return the money.
They sell spoiled meat products. My friends already stopped going there and now I won't go there either.
Better go to Russian deli on Winchested and Hamilton - they are nice people there and I never had problems with any of their products.
This place got one of the best selections around the town. First they got all types of different beers ranging from Russian to German and some eastern european ones. They also have Kvas in different varieties, Borjomi (which is my favorite) and bunch of other sodas from Europe/Russia. They also got a huge selection of cured meats and deli got great selection as well if you're on hurry for lunch.
They also got plenty of stuff for your sweet tooth...anything from chocolates to different type of pasties.
Winmart also got a restaurant in the back called Aragvi...apparently all the deli foods they have available you can select from to host for your own private party with music and singers.
Definitely got a repeat customer...cant wait to go back
As far as a market, this place has all the essentials, at least:
~Russian mustard: so spicy and delicious, it can replace horseradish or wasabi where needed
~Vologodskoe butter: actually tastes like butter! Try it
~Borodina bread: a really dark slovak rye :)
They also have some good juices, like black currant, which is hard to find, and pomegranate also. They are great mixers. Some good eastern european and german cookies and pickled veggies are also available.
As a deli, they have a great selection, most of which I'm kind of scared of trying. They have great homemade chicken liverwurst, and you can buy caviar by weight. Other than that, I wouldn't recommend their pirozhki, and that's about it.
There is one hilarious bit: the help wanted sign is in russian! I am pretty sure it's illegal, but I can't imagine that a non-russian speaking person could be very good for business! It kind of reminds me of that joke:
"Psychics wanted: you know where to apply."

This market appears to carry mostly Russian and Southeastern European goods - especially the packaged cakes frequently offered to guests in Russian homes. Unfortunately, the store does not have a huge selection of items. I did get a great price on a large bag of poppyseed I needed for baking (poppyseed filling - yum yum!).
Service was very friendly. I will be be back for things other than poppy seed :).

Beware--Spoiled Food Sold Here!
I went in to purchase some "red" caviar today, and asked for the best, freshest kind. The salespeople were friendly and pointed out a $20 jar of "Tsars Salmon Caviar" which I purchased. I took it home and tried it right away only to find that it is BITTER as poison. I've been eating the stuff for 20 years, so I know how it should taste. I called Winmart and the man picking up told me that he hasn't had this problem before and that I should call the company (for which he didn't have a number). He said that he wouldn't refund my money. I found the company's number (http://red-caviar.com) and they asked for the serial number on the jar, and then told me that it is an old product (from last year) and that they were also suspicious about how it has been stored, and that it shouldn't be bitter. They were shocked that Winmart wouldn't refund my money for the product, especially since they have a large mark up on it (it's only $11.90 online).
Anyway---not a happy customer here. I do not recommend Winmart, to say the least. I just hope I don't get food poisoning!
They have the best brand of kabanosy here. Plus some other meats. Staff is not the friendliest in the world, but good enough.
Not much selection, good for a quick stop for some meats. They do have a deli but I haven't tried any.
I used to work with a Russian Jewish girl (yes very rare) and she always told me about this place. Always looked like a plain convenience store. However as we walked in, I saw all the Cyrillic , heard nothing but Russian and knew this place was legit. Tons of good food items and beverages I've not seen the likes of since BZ Bee in San Mateo (http://www.yelp.com/bi...). Though they lack the intriguing video section of BZ Bee, they have just about the same amount of food goodness. Ah, the amount of cured and/or smoked meats, plus the deli is excellent. I happily drank my Napitki Chernogolovki Baikal beverage and made my co-workers thing I was drinking something from Chernobyl. No it's not nuclear fall out soda! :)
If I could give this store no stars, trust me, I would! I've lived in Europe all of my life and it's true that you can find a lot of things there that cannot be found in American supermarkets. But the stuff in the American supermarkets is at least FRESH! :-((( I bought many times stuff from here and 3 out of 10 products are OLD, EXPIRED, STALE, or MOLDY!!!! I would definitely NOT RECOMMEND! They should not even stay in business! There are far better store out there that sell those kind of products and guess what? They sell them fresh and for less! This place - the owners probably want to make the most out of everything that they sell! :-(( Is that even legal? Selling expired, moldy food?
Four stars for the great variety of cured meats, can goods and fresh deli dishes. You won't get much service here unless you speak Russian. The chicken pate is delicious and the homemade dill pickles are crunchy and tart. It's close to home, so that's a plus. Nothing to write home about, but give this place a try.
