I was in South Carolina for sales training for a company I was working for in 2006.  The company put us up in the Wingate Inn for two weeks, which is a long time to be away from home.  But the Wingate wasn't so bad, they had cable TV, and even a computer downstairs available for guests to use to check email/myspace/yelp.

The real treat was a surprise known as their breakfast.  This wasn't some "cereal, donuts, and coffee" continental breakfast..  The Wingate doesn't play around!!

They had almost everything you can think of, Bagels, scrambled eggs, sausage, bacon, Belgian waffle mix/waffle maker, cereal, yogurt, toast all kinds of juices.  Every morning my trainee partner Tom and I would get up early and gorge ourselves on breakfast.  I quickly discovered you can make a egg/sausage muffin sandwich which will dominate your belly.

I will mention that halfway though my stay a intense sewer smell started coming from my bathroom at the Wingate.  I put up with it for a night or two hoping it would go away, but eventually I had to change rooms as it got too intense.  The room change went without incident, and the hotel staff was very understanding.

3 points normal rating... +2 for huge breakfast buffet, -1 for sewer smell in bathroom

Very impressive. The hotel staff spoke english (*GASP! Not in America!) and they were very friendly. The hotel was very clean. The rooms are spacious. A lot deeper than typical rooms. When they say Free wi-fi, they mean it. Connected and good/fast connections! The pool has some to be desired, although I typically don't use the pool. It is located with plenty of places to eat around it from fast-food to sit-down restaurants. Conveniently located just a few miles from downtown Greenville, SC but out of the hustle/bustle of the city. Nice to stay and then go into the city when you want to.

Not too bad.  Rooms were clean and amenities were modern.  Carpeting felt damp.  Pillows did not give when slept on so I woke up with a sore neck and shoulder.  Lots of restaurants nearby.  "Gym" is appalling.  Free breakfast, with some hot items available, but mostly it's your run of the mill high-carb, high-sugar spread.  Hard boiled eggs and fresh fruit are available to those who know what's good fuel for their bodies.

I was in South Carolina for a seminar last summer, and as we were returning home one Sunday night ... oh wait what, we didn't. That's because United cancelled all its flights, and there were no open flights until Tuesday.

Huh. Thanks.

Anyway, they put us up in this cute little hotel for a couple of nights. And let me tell you, if you take away the airline wank, it was a whole lot of fun.

It's your average-sized roadside motel/inn of convenience (or maybe not so roadside, but you get the idea), but it was pretty nice. When we got there, the staff at the front desk offered us coffee and juice from the breakfast area. Everything was clean, and I didn't feel grossed out walking around the room barefoot at all. After jumping on the beds for a bit, we went over to the little business center and puttered around the internet.

I mentioned that we were there on a Sunday night, right? Right. So even if we tried, there wasn't going to be any alcohol for an impromptu party (they don't sell alcohol on Sundays). Anywhere. Luckily, I had some beer in my suitcase, but somewhere in between checking in my luggage, getting it back at baggage claim, and getting it back to the hotel, it exploded and dyed my white t-shirt a nice toasty beige. So much for that.

I only mention that because that's how I listened to Project Runway over the speakers in the bathroom while I washed my shirt.

... that's a nice way of saying there's cable TV and bathroom speakers, huh?

And oh my god, the breakfast was amaaaazinnggflskjfsldfs. I was expecting to find the usual hotel continental breakfast of donuts, cheap pastries, bagels, cups of cereal, and fruit.

Oh, not at all. Well, yeah, those things were there, but there was so much more than that. Like those sausage & biscuit things that you got in your cafeteria in elementary school. And there was real food, too. But what I loved most was pouring waffle batter into the waffle irons and having fresh waffles to take back and have in the comfort of my room. Yes, I am easily amused.

And there's a tray of cookies in the lobby that they refill several times a day. You can work it off in their small fitness center or the pool.

It's walking distance to a bunch of restaurants, and it's easy to take a cab to anywhere you need to go. And free shuttle to airport? Sure! And the staff there was really nice.

I really liked this place, but when the hell am I going to find myself in the middle of nowhere like that again?

But if you do, there's somewhere decent to stay.
