from my first visit here, the owner has welcomed companions and me, as well as everyone else. the place has a fun atmosphere, good food, good wine and enthusiastic host.
try the sangria, the mac and cheese (get the smoked bacon), and any of the panini.
I have to agree that the name is a bit much. The food was good, but i love a place that has tapas style food. The wine list was extensive.
The best time to go IMHO is for the brunch. It is a good introduction to the place, the wine, the food, and affordable at $16...including Mimosas which seemed to keep refilling.
I also have used Winegasm for a group event, and was very pleased, finding the staff highly attentive.
For dinner, this is a pricey stop in Astoria...and some of the food is worth it....some.
Am I the only one that thinks their name suites the dining experience at this joint? Because to me, the food was delighfully orgasmic.
My boyfriend and I have a love for exposed brick walls, big wooden beams, iron gates and wine & cheese. After a long hard week at work and not having the opportunity to have weekends off all the time, we came here for Sunday brunch. We don't care so much for the brunch special for $15.95 which includes 3 mimosas because we would much rather sip wine than some bubbly. Their prices were steep ...$70 BRUNCH tab but you know what it was worth it !
Roasted peppers with warm goat cheese and crositinis - AMAZING !!!
Wild mushroom truffles w/ cheese on bread - Needed salt but it was good for the most part.
Marinated Skirt Steak w/ poached eggs and potatoes - TASTY and def. hits a spot.
Filet Mignon Panini w/ wine dipped onions - Delicious.
White Sangria - Mmmmm.
Cab and Bordeux - According to my bf, was good with a "bite to it"
Sunday brunch on a gorgeous day w/ good food, wine and my other half across from me. Ahh, I live for days like this....
I know a lot of the other reviewers have had an issue with their name, I'm really not sure why. Sure the name could have been better but seriously, is the name going to affect your experience there so much?
If it is then this is most definitely not the place for you.
Winegasm is probably one of the most laid back enjoyable evening experiences you can have in Astoria. Especially if you're sick of the beer gardens or all the lounge / pseudo clubs that pump up the volume on that crazy Euro techno. This is probably also not an appropriate place for you if you like the crowds of guidos and other random orange skinned bimbos (seriously can someone explain where they come from? Astorians in general don't consist of this demographic, just the night life.)
The laid back atmosphere is created with intimate mood lighting, rich wood tones and great mix of music that's just perfect for the ambiance. As such this makes it a great place for those out on a date (there's a nook to your left as you enter if you foresee some evening canoodling) as well as for friends just looking at hanging back and having some great conversation infused with great tasting wine.
I'm not sure how good this place is to wine connoisseurs since I'm definitely not one myself. I am however someone that having tasted a wine I enjoy will try to learn as much about it as possible. For someone like me, they've never disappointed with their recommendations and are great at explaining what to expect.
The staff are all very friendly. Jenny in particular who I seem to bump into the most, will add some witty banter to your conversation whether you're with company or not and the staff if business is slow will make great conversation.
With this combination it really seems like you're going to a place run by a bunch of friends. The food is surprisingly delicious and especially that decadent molten chocolate cake.
I happened upon this place while exploring Broadway with my camera. I saw a building I liked and started walking down 37th St. I took a picture and as I was returning to Broadway, I noticed Winegasm. Much has been said about the name. Let's just say my first impression was that of amusement. It was the early evening and it was dead. Two guys were sitting out on the patio talking. I later found out that one of them was the owner. I'm a regular and friends with the staff at Terroir so I was very curious as to how Winegasm would compare.
Walking in, I was impressed by the room. It's a really beautiful space. I saddled up to the bar and perused the menu. One of the things that immediately stood out to me was the flight option. $12 for three tastes is a pretty good deal. That's something even Terroir cannot top. What they offered by the glass was a good smattering of offerings from around the world. This is where Terroir trumps all. It has the most extensive by-the-glass selection AND you can choose between a glass (6 oz.) or a taste (3 oz.). I ordered a flight and the bartender summoned the owner. They were out of one of the wines I requested but he substituted it with a wine they only offer by the bottle so that was nice.
I have read mostly negative things about the food at Winegasm but not having much of an appetite, couldn't see for myself if the hype was true or not. I was bombarded with requests that I MUST come to brunch, which I didn't much appreciate. Upon my second visit, the same bartender did the same thing and asked why he hadn't seen me at brunch. Pretty annoying.
In all, I had two flights of whites and a couple of glasses of reds and I was not disappointed at all in the selection they offered. On my second visit, I brought one of the staff members at Terroir. He had nice things to say and thoroughly enjoyed himself. I may venture to try the food at some point but for now, it will be a nice little spot to hang when I have a hankerin' for some vino and I don't want to go into Manhattan.
I really like the ambience here...dark and mysterious, you could come with a group or a date and feel equally at home. some tables outside and open air front.
so i can't even remember which wine i drank...it was a white i think and good...i came here to talk about the food...
so we ordered a bunch of appetizers: potato pancakes, seared shrimp, and mac and cheese. the potato pancakes and seared shrimp were delicioso. the mac and cheese...i don't know, it was one of those kinds that sort of makes you want to throw up after a few bites. and i LOVE mac and cheese and cheese in general, it was just that rich, and in a bad way.
overall a nice little place to live nearby, embarrassing name aside.
A friend lived near here and we thought we might check it out one night as I am a sucker for a wine bar.
This was just up my alley. With a great combination of European eatery featuring communal tables and a great wine list. There was a lot to choose from with old world and new world selections. I was lucky to have to sommelier available to discuss my choice of bottle for the evening. It was a great touch as our discussion was very easy and uncomplicated.
The food, on the whole, was excellent. The entrees are a but limited and probably a little to high scale cuisine for a neighborhood type place as this, but very good quality if someone takes a chance on it.
On the whole, stay away from the molten chocolate cake. In actuality, this is my favorite dessert of all time. Winegasm has not perfected this dessert, however. I sent it back twice for being dry and burnt. I was very disappointed. The cheesecake, on the other hand, was exquisite.
Take a chance and have a winegasm. It may not be your next neighborhood haunt, but it was definitely a place I continue to patronize.
So nice to finally have a gem like this within walking distance. Beats going to Doyles..you know what i'm talking about.
nice ambiance for sure, good mixed crowd.
I just noticed that Winegasm only has about four stars--and that surprised me (in comparison to some other local Yelped establishments)...as Winegasm is one of the best, friendliest, most well-run establishments in Queens.
Then I remembered, I, myself only gave them four stars. I really couldn't be more happy about the success Winegasm has achieved in just a year. They are packed most nights of the week. Also, this is my pick for the best happy hour bar in Astoria. The vibe couldn't be more relaxing--and no trip to the 'gasm is complete without their A-MA-ZING truffle mac 'n cheese.
(Full disclosure, I host http://whyleaveastoria... events there on a regular basis, so I may be kind of partial, but if it weren't such a great establishment, I wouldn't stick around.)

Winegasm is the best place around for grabbing a drink and a chat with a friend. The environment… Read more »
Terrible name, great food.
We've eaten here twice, and we've been very happy both times. The first time was with a group of four, and we all fondly remember the bacon-wrapped prunes. The second time we went as a couple for Valentine's Day. The prix fixe menu was very good, though it left us a tiny bit hungry.
Worth a visit.
The name alone entices curiosity -- I wanted to find the Sex & the City fanatic who brought up the 90s a little too soon. Maybe he had back issues of AdAge?! I don't know.
Apart from that tragedy I found the dimly-lit, dark stained wood space (a la P-Barn) more current; a nice change in quaint Astoria. The food was freshly prepared in the open kitchen and the drinks made special during the happiest hour (two-for-one). It was the perfect setting in the warm early evening and the service was friendly.
I always enjoy an establishment that tries its hardest to not relate to its name at all.
I've noticed Winegasm for quite awhile but never took a step into it. Why? The name. Winegasm is the type of name that people makeup when they are cornered on the internet and asked to name a new restaurant. It is a name that sounds better in the head than spoken out loud. It brings up images of shag carpeting, fireplaces, women wearing ill fitted tube tops and men with unkempt mustaches and way too much product in their hair. Winegasm isn't the name for a restaurant - it's a name for a location in the Onion.
But Winegasm does its best in trying to be something above its name. The wine list is expansive, the decor is exposed brick, dark woods, high chairs and low seats. The lighting strikes one as natural and probably purchased at ikea. The atmosphere screams european pretension and trying too hard. The hardwood chairs and tables are trying to convey and image of an alps ski lodge but fails because the high table in the center of the dining area is too high - it creates a scene were some diners are towering over others. It also makes the space cramped while leaving the bar area nice and open. Everyone should be raised or no one should be - the multi-tiered levels ends up being a distraction for diners and harms, rather than helps, creating the kind of conversations and vibes that a place like Winegasm needs to survive.
The Brunch menu (which is why I was there) is well priced if you don't drink. Some of the entrees come with 3 mimosas for 15.95. Without the drinks, they're 8/9/10 dollars for a smattering of food. If you love to drink but hate to eat, this is what you want to indulge in. If you like to eat, your choices are even more limited. The french toast is delicious but could have used some home fries. The sandwiches look better than they taste and the fact that the restaurant serves chorizo (as a separate side) seems so oddly placed that it makes me think that Winegasm hasn't figured out the concept of Brunch yet. If you want us to just drink, don't offer a mimosa deal - just make more food and charge for full drinks.
The drink list is filled with your usual attempts at high-end drinks with medium quality spirits and liquors. 9 dollars for a cocktail isn't a horrible price but when the name of the drink is more than 4 words and the drink description is longer than a few sentences, it makes me think that the ambition of the drink was far greater than alcohol used to make it. And, again, there was no separate brunch cocktail menu which seems silly to me for a place that prides itself on being an alcoholic establishment.
Service, surprisingly, was very spotty. There were five of us and the food took forever to arrive. We must have arrive right when the staff changed or something because people who arrived after us had no problems receiving their food. It took forever for me to receive my diet coke (it should not take 30 minutes for me to order it before I was told that the place ran out) though I did receive one about an hour after I ordered (they went to the local store to buy some). I will say that my water glass was kept full during my entire brunch experience (which is always nice) but the lack of a bread or "freebie" while waiting for our food was a minus.
Overall, Winegasm reminds me of way too many other places in Astoria that are trying to be like some up and coming east village restaurant without actually having to create the product necessary to thrive in the east village. Astoria is becoming dominated by people fleeing the high prices of Manhattan but that doesn't mean we should have our restaurants dumbed down to our bare minimalist expectations.
I didn't enjoy much about my meal here. We did have some good wines, but I can buy a good wine at a liquor store and not have to put up with the other things I didn't enjoy.
It is kind of loud. This is a place you go to enjoy the company of your date. Not to scream over the background noise.
Food was OK at best. Had the skirt steak and it was fine.. but nothing fantastic. Tremendously over-priced for what you got. And guess what.. this is Astoria, and like Clipse said, "We get it for cheap"
Also, when an order gets screwed up, I'm very forgiving.. I never complain, but just say "sorry". The word means so much to me. It's all I ask wait-staff of the world. It shows to me that you care.
I don't know the other yelpers for this wine bar are so grumpy about. Aside from the god awful name, this is my new favorite place to go and grab a drink. As far as I know, there is very little like this in my neighborhood and I was delighted to find it. The interior is beautiful, there is a fairly good wine list and lots of tastey little morsels. I had the salad and a few of the appetizers. While they weren't large portions, I don't think that's what you should expect of a wine bar.
If this place were in Manhattan, the drinks would be $3 or $4 more and the food would be the same. This is a great deal and you can usually find somewhere to sit as a walk in.
I really really really want to give this place another star, but i just can't. It's not because of the delicious food, the super cozy atmosphere, or the great wine list. It's that the service is substantially less than great. I thought the first time, it was that it was so very crowded. Then last night, it was dead and the service was still significantly lacking.
If you are willing to overlook that, you should def try the truffled mac n cheese with bacon. yum yum yum
Winegasm, it's you, not me. I wanted to fall in love with you. I was looking for love in all the right places-you boast a fine wine selection, you are attractive, and popular amongst my fellow Astorian.
You were hot. Really hot. My Prosecco was salty because I couldn't stop sweating in it, HOT. I should not be sweating while sitting still in an establishment. -1 star for temperature
You were slow. Really slow. If this was a date, you would have stayed somewhere between first and second base for well over a year. There were only two people working at the time (if you don't count the kitchen folk)-one bartender who was furiously making specialty cocktails, which takes time. I appreciate your zeal for cocktail creation. However, I only ordered a Prosecco, which involves 2 steps:
Step one: Open bottle
Step two: Pour
15 minutes to pour my beverage? Meh. Minus one star.
I want to love this place, because it is charming and a breath of fresh air in the Astoria neighborhood. If i have to walk by one more mediocre Greek restaurant, I might have to cut a bitch. The panini we had were delicious and a generous portion. Yum. The prices are extremely reasonable and we will definitely be back.
Promise to be better next time so I can give you more stars? Kthanxbye.
An all around great place to stop in, grab an awesome appetizer (due to the smaller than average kitchen they are limited in what they can prepare) and a great glass of wine.
I'm a fan.
The awesome place with the unfortunate name.
My fiance and I just discovered this place two weeks ago, and we've fallen in love with it. What's not to like? The wait staff is super friendly (hi Jenny!), the decor is nice and understated (dark wood paneling and the glow of candlelight), the wine selection is good, and the food was FANTASTIC. It was easy to have a conversation, as it wasn't overwhelmingly loud in the restaurant. I don't remember hearing loud music or anything, just the buzz of everyone talking in the room.
The first time we went, we just had drinks and cheese, so a few days ago, we went back to have dinner. Jenny told us the menu had just been completely revamped. We have no idea what it was like before, but we LOVED, LOVED, LOVED everything we ate.
French onion soup - pretty hard to mess this up. Good.
Seared shrimp with chorizo - Very tasty
Stuffed piquilo peppers with goat cheese - usually don't like peppers, but these were delicious.
Wild mushroom truffle crostini - yum
Truffle mac and cheese w/bacon - EXCELLENT!!!!
Prices were super reasonable, $5-11 for each plate. This is definitely our new favorite dinner-and-drinks place in Astoria.
Astoria has been waiting for a place like this. What a perfect neighborhood wine bar - lots of great wines, good food, knowledgeable staff, cozy atmosphere, and no pretension.
Passion is the first word that comes to mind when I think of the people behind Winegasm. Everybody that I spoke with seemed to really be gung-ho about everything to do with the wine bar, and with food and wine in general. The grand opening is on 4/12, but they had a soft opening last week, and I was able to come in and try a bunch of their stuff, and speak with a lot of the owners and staff. The staff is kind of a mixed bag - Croatian, French, Serbian, American, etc. - and they look to this wine bar to appeal to every type of Astorian and New Yorker, while not being specific to one ethnicity.
The place is really beautiful - exposed brick, copper cookware on display, a sunroof, and even a trellis. They said they should have outdoor seating soon, as well.
The menu offers a bunch of different small plates, panninis, salads, and meats and cheeses. I got to try the white bean and lemon flatbread. The portion size was very small, but so was the $3 price tag. It was more like a crisp fried tortilla than a focaccia, or the like. It was nice, with lots of bright, crisp flavors. The very informative sommelier recommended a wine pairing for me, which went very well. They also brought me the "gasm dip." This was really delicious and very unique. It was a puree of beans, carrots, and spices with house-made melba crisps. The saltiness of the crisps went really well with the sweetness and spiciness of the dip. I finished things up with a glass of the Alcyone, which is a Uruguayan dessert wine. It was fantastic. Very full-flavored, with a strong vanilla flavor, with hints of coffee and chocolate.
I am very excited to find a place like this in Astoria. It has a real Manhattan feel to it, and yet feels very neighborhoody at the same time. I'm glad I live right down the street. I'll be coming back often.
Winegasm is a lovely addition to Astoria. I'd been walking by the place for a few months, uncertain as to what to make of it (I'm still not sold on the name), but after looking at the menu, I went in and found it to be a wonderful new restaurant. The space is well designed and I like the feel of the establishment. The kitchen is right there attached to the dining area, so it gets a bit hot, but that's nice for Winter nights. I think they brought a touch of elegance to the area.
The service is among the friendliest I've found in Astoria. They are helpful, solicitous and very attentive. Both times I've dined there, they kept my water full and checked with my table regularly to make sure everything was going well.
Their brunch specials come with THREE mimosas, and not small Mimosas, real sized Mimosas, and they were very good. I had a sandwich and it was quite tasty.
My boyfriend and I went back last night for dinner and tried special drinks (the dark cherry caipirinha and the mulled wine). They were both nice, but the mulled wine was stellar. I'm eager to try the pumpkin martini next. We both had the mac and cheese with Canadian bacon and thought it was great.
Winegasm is a great new addition to the neighborhood - go check it out!
I first heard of Winegasm from a friendly bartender when asked about some neat new places to check out in the area. She described it as a Tapas joint with great wine and a very chill environment.
Upon my first visit with a few friends, all of us wine fans, the amazing smell of cheeses and breadscooking were amazing. Stepping in the door, you were overwhelmed with aromas and the warmth of the place is very relaxing. A pretty great wine selection places some uncommon choices before you so experimentation is nice here. The owner came around at some point and we joked about wanting the largest bottle he had, he laughed, and then proceeded to hand out samples of their selections.
It can get loud since it's small and the seating prevents groups (at least ours) of 5 more or more from easily talking, but the open air front is nice in the summer. Price wise we felt the portions are slim for what you pay even with it being a tapas bar.
Great food, terrible name.
Went there for dinner the other night. The cheese plate was excellent, as were the mussels (special dish).
Although some reviews have complained about the service, for us the service was flawless.
Can we all just chill and drink a little wine? I challenge anyone to name one spot in Astoria with better ambiance than this place. They do wine tastings and I found the owner super nice. You can get a craf for $19 if I remember correctly.
As a young professional hoping for signs of American youth in Astoria, Winegasm is very refreshing. Check it out.
My new favorite brunch place in Astoria!! AMAZING. They could not have done it any better than this. Went on Saturday morning and had the best pancakes of my life, and I am not usually a pancakes person. Get this- they were citrus ricotta pancakes with a berry compote and caramelized apples on top! To DIE for. My boyfriend had the three eggs with fingerling potatoes, and toast. The potatoes were amazing, and eggs: Yummy! I had wine and he had Sangria, a perfect way to start a Saturday!!
The service was so attentive. Our waitress was so helpful in picking out my wine bringing out several tastes so I could have the perfect wine to go with brunch.
I love the atmosphere, all dark and cozy inside. Astoria has been waiting for a place like this. I can't wait to come back and try their dinner menu. They have a great wine selection both by the glass and by the bottle, only I wish they had more selection of "New World " white wines- South Africa, Chilean, Argentinean, etc, sold by the bottle. Hopefully this will evolve over time, as they just opened
I have to agree with the notion that the name is unfortunate. Not only that, but the lettering on their awning is so large, it's practically screaming "WINEGASM". I understand why some might be a little hesitant to try this place.
Once you get past the name and in the door, though, I think most will be pleasantly surprised. The space is small and cozy, as is the large bar table in the middle of the room that everyone can share. The wine list was nice - I had a great Corvina. The meat and cheese plates were enjoyable, but I think it would be hard to mess this up. Their service was pretty efficient, considering I only saw about 3 people working there on a relatively crowded night.
I think this is a nice place to go with a small group of friends and enjoy a quieter night, some good conversation, and a few glasses of wine. I'm interested to come back and see if their main dishes are any good. I'll definitely be back.
Went for the $16 brunch on Sunday. Service was really slow- we waited far longer than we should have for some simple brunch food, though the waiter did keep our mimosa glasses filled. My boyfriend got a big, heaping plate of french toast with banana and nutella- a hit. But those of us who ordered pancakes got three small, very thin little cakes with a small plop of fruit on the side. Very disappointing- I had been very hungry, and for $16, I expect to not still be hungry after I've scrapped my plate clean. I don't think I'll be going to Winegasm for brunch again.
tasty drinks(wine and cocktails). good cheese selection. romantic decor. not too loud. good pricepoint. good addition to the wine places to choose from
It seems that from just glancing at the reviews preceding this, that Winegasm has managed to create a bit of divide - people that do like the place and to be nice, people that think there's better. After my second trip to Winegasm last night (I felt I needed to be nice and try it again), I have to cast my lot with those who dislike the venue.
Now this is not to say that there are not positives to the establishment. The space is warm and welcoming, the lights are usually dimmed, with candle light on the near bar length table in the middle of the room (I'm guessing this is to establish a communal atmosphere, but I've never seen anyone using the table - and this includes the nearly dozen times I've walked past at night), friendly service and an owner (I'm thinking it was an owner) who seemed to take in interest in what my friends and I thought of our food or wine. These are all positives and I wouldn't want them to change.
The problem of course, is that this is a venue where people are going to eat and drink or drink and eat, on my two trips, first I went to drink, last night was to eat. I found problems with both trips.
The first time I came, it was a very warm, humid July evening. My friend was willing to try anywhere and I just wanted a glass of sangria. I've had bad sangria before, but nothing like this. From my experiences, sangria is usually sweeter than an average red, or white if you're going that route. I ordered a glass of red sangria and my friend a caipirinha. On her first sip, her face turned, and not in a good way. Having never had her drink, I wasn't sure why, she assured me it was not because the drink was too powerful, but in her words because they "didn't know how to make the drink." When I received my sangria, all it looked like was a glass of red wine poured over ice. When I sipped it, that's what it was. Also, and this is a pet peeve - no fruit. How can you have sangria without fruit.
Last night, I went to Winegasm after seeing and hearing people talking about it in a positive light. My second experience was better, but still nothing worth savoring.
As an appetizer, my friend and I ordered the gasm dip, a mix of blended beans, carrots and truffle oil served with melba chips. The dip itself was ok, more creamy than I would have liked, and the chips were overly salty. Don't know why, but they were. For my entree, I had the 7 mac & cheese plate. It was served in a nice gratin dish, with a suitable bread crumb coating, but was served too quickly. As soon as my fork pierced the crust, the melted cheese and oil bled all over, making the dish a mess. After letting it sit for a spell, just to let the cheese congeal, I found it to be better than I thought it would be (As soon as I saw the cheese bleed, I had no expectations and thought it would be awful). Although overall, the cheeses that they used (they weren't specified), led to the dish being a bit too salty. My friend had the croque monsieur, which was decent. Not enough of a bechamel sauce to the sandwich, but the cheese melted nicely and the ham was just salty enough. Actually the best part of the experience last night was what I didn't like on my first trip - the drinks. I made it simple and went with a South African Chenin Blanc to go with the dip. My first glass of a South African wine, but it was a good one. The wine was crisp and refreshing, a bit fruity, just enough. I had two glasses, but of course being what it was, the second glass was too chilled, there was no taste and I had to let it sit for about 10 minutes before it warmed enough to drink. My friend had a California Saugvignon Blanc, and said it was ok.
Overall, this is probably the last time I'll go here unless there is a specific event that attracts my interest, or I get dragged here by someone who really really wants to go.
i was really excited to check out this place having passed it on numerous occasions. finally one fateful friday night my friends and i decided to go check it out. we sat at a table in the corner--until we realized that the air conditioning vent above was leaking water, so we quietly switched tables.
the service was very slow and not good. i've never been to a wine bar where they don't pour glasses of wine for everyone, whether it's a pitcher of sangria or a bottle of wine, usually the wait staff will do this. but they didn't, which kind of bothered me--but i let it slide. speaking of which, the white sangria--good, the red sangria, had absolutely no flavor!
at one point i asked for a set of silverware (three times), which i received about 20 minutes after the fact--again no bother. but then our food came out--now keep in mind the restaurant is slow, aside from us there were 3 other tables in the establishment at that time. so i order some chicken dish which comes out luke warm at best and my friends had similar complaints. in all, yes the food was good but only good--perhaps it was an off night? i'm not sure, but what i do know is that i was less than impressed and underwhelmed by everything--the food and the service. fortunately the company was awesome so we all had a great time, but i would skip on this place.
I decided to check this place out even though the name is pretty stupid. But I like wine bars so I felt the need to go there. It was definitely a mediocre experience. I don't really mind slow service (which is what they have here) but i hate when places forget to place orders (which is what this place did). We got three small plates to share and one main course. They brought out two of the small plates and then 30 minutes later we inquired about the gasm dip that we ordered (again, stupid name) and were told that order had never been placed. So we got our main course of skirt steak before the dip. Kind of annoying. The food was decent, but kind of pricey for what you got and not good enough to go back. And I agree with karen g., it was kind of hot in there. They need a different ventilation system or something. Definitely would not go back there.
Charming little spot just off Broadway. Wonderful selection of wines, tasty small plates and a knowledgeable staff. Really happy to have this in the neighborhood.
Never has it happened before that after a 3 course dinner and 2 glasses of wine I went to another restaurant to eat normal food. It is a wine tasting place that serves some light appetizers to go along. Don't confuse this place with a restaurant and don't take your date there! Too pretentious and expensive for Astoria.
What a treat in Astoria!
Eclectic high-quality menu served by the sweetest staff!
Rather unique and tasty drinks that are meticulously prepared to perfection. I loved the cherry caipirinha.
Beyond the superior food and service, Winegasm has a great ambiance with a cool skylight, a trendy and diverse music mix, and a nice wine display in the dining room.
The restaurant has several 2-person tables around the perimeter and a giant center table (below the skylight) that seats lots of people (maybe 20).
Check it out -- I bet you will get hooked like we did!
i'm not sure what genius came up with the name winegasm, but whoever it was, i'd hate to think what they'd call their children. despite the name, sadly there's nothing orgasmic about this place. i've been there a couple of times, and initially the quality was pretty good.. service, drinks, food... were all solid. however the place has fallen in quality over the last few months. the last time i was there there was little atmosphere and the once bubbly croud has seemed to have vanished. my mojito which was too sweet - came in a glass the size of an egg cup, and overall the experience was pretty drab! alas - its very far from being winegasmic.. they need to go back to basics and work on their foreplay...
Let me start by saying that my boyfriend and I are slightly obsessive foodies, and are always on the hunt for the new and interesting, espeically when it comes to wine. Let me follow that by saying that we've officially made Winegasm our "regular" dinner spot. We've been 3 times and have a found the food, wine and service to be top-notch every time.
To make a believer out of you Yelpers, I'm going to recap our dinner experience last night:
We arrived around 8pm to a pretty dead Winegasm... there was a small party in the corner and we got a pick of any table. The waitress (newly minted and on her second day), came by and offered us a water selection and gave us our menus. As we've been there before, we pondered over which sopas (small dippers) we wanted [prosciutto and pesto, goat cheese & heirloom tomatoes, tapenade and carmelized onions, and pancetta with fontina], and also decided to split the spinach salad before having our respective entrees [skirt steak for him, mac and cheese with bacon for me]. The one small hiccup in our plan was that the bordeaux that we wanted was no longer available, however our waitress and Richard (one of the owners) provided us with an amazing substitute that has not yet reached the menu. It was the perfect pairing for our delicious meal!! We came in with larger-than-usual appetites, so we also decided to polish off our meal with dessert. Richard gave us excellent pairings to the warm vanilla bean cheesecake and molten fudge chocolate cake - this perfect, summery/fruity sparkling wine that was the perfect compliment. Oh, and by the way, by the time we left around 10:45 (we chose to have a long and leisurely meal, it was not a function of service!), the restaurant was hopping for a late Sunday night!
This is the perfect addition to Astoria. Sorry to those who came in the dead of summer... I would highly suggest returning (though, I've also been during the height of the summer heat, and was not sweating into my wine!) and tasting their evolving, seasonal menus. This restaurant is moving in a great direction and their stages are not to be missed!!
great find in Astoria. wine isn't that much cheaper than Manhattan, but the cocktails might be. didn't eat anything, but the menu was eclectic (but short). kind service. I would definitely go again.
Really beautiful place that feels like being in the midst of the Mediterranean; Great wine, tapas and sandwiches (love that lox)...I like the fact that they have grape ice cream as well (so cute) ... Overall, great positive vibe and energy...It has definitely become my neighborhood regular spot to hang ..
As a disclaimer this rating would have been a-ok, except for the know it all attitude we encountered, Which is fine, if you do in fact know what you're talking about. The night started off well enough, with a happy greeting; the place is warm, rustic & inviting . We especially enjoyed the communal feel of the banquet table, in the center of the room. We perused the menu, and could not decide between the Central Coast Qupe syrah, and a NY local cab Franc from the finger lakes. So we thought we could make an educated descion with some help from the gentleman tending bar (he looked more like a manager). We recieved no information on the item we were interested in and were pushed in an entirely different direction. And adamantly requested our qupe. We also ordered cured meats before the bottle was opened as a first course, which were quite tasty, but didn't arrive until after our second course and olives. Now my lady likes spice but the dishes are over spiced, and quite overwhelming. In a place called winegasm where the wine is expected to take center stage, it seems like the cuisine is vying attention and is too much. Whatsmore those warm olives came out too hot and could seriously burn someone. Also as an allergy issue you gotta know what's in your food, when asked we were told I don't know allspice? And the matter was not pursued further. I hope it better next time around.
been there...loved it...great wine...great decor... but in desperate need of name change!!!! do it now before you are established... it is not controversial but simply in poor taste!
