This is the location of the annual Taste of Lodi festival.
Parking is limited but there is ample street parking within short walking distance.
The grounds are divided into different areas and this is especially nice for a large event. The vendors were spread out nicely. It has been very hot the last two years of the festival so I appreciate that there are lots of trees and shaded areas.
"Real" bathrooms are available near the hotel check in and at the rear of the property.
Wine and Roses was also serving some appetizers and they were very tasty. I especially liked the chicken and asparagus in puff pastry although it was a tad dry. There was also a bite with sundried tomatoes, anchovies and goat cheese that was awfully good.

I've eaten at Wine & Roses many times and this visit was very good as usual. The restaurant is located in the main hotel building where a lounge and bar are also located. The grounds are beautifully landscaped and weddings are often held there.
Sat in the part of the dining room at the rear (which is the best spot) overlooking the garden. Outdoor dining at teak tables with umbrellas where not otherwised covered is also available, but it was much too hot to do that during this visit (as it often is during the summer there).
Split a crab salad w/a crab cake on top, my GF had chilled gazpacho and clams w/tagliatelle and I had a chilled corn/crab soup and steamed halibut. Shared a meyer lemon cheeese cake for desert. Each dish was well plated and well prepared. Had a bottle of Robert Mondavi Fume Blanc which went well with the meal. Service was very attentive without being intrusive.
The restaurant recently underwent a major remodeling, which mainly affected the kitchen and bar, but the dining area also got a make over with some new tables, chairs and wall coverings in natural wood and shades of brown which makes the dining area seem more relaxing. There is also a new chef in the kitchen but the quality of the food seems at least equal and possibly better than the past.
As far as I know, W&R is the only decent restaurant in the Central Valley outside of Sacramento. So, it's definite must-visit if you're anywhere near Lodi and are looking for a nice place to eat.

Nice elegant restaurant, with efficient & attentive service.
- Beef Carpaccio: 1 piece of meat was pounded but still very thick & oddly shaped with fat showing (not marbling). The color of the meat
was very dark. Wouldn't order it again.
- The chilled soup of sweet white corn & crabmeat (no dairy) with a drizzle of extra virgin olive oil was sweet, delicious and refreshing.
- Pork tenderloin was good, but a bit over cooked. The sauce was rich.
- The lamb loin was a bit gammy and the sauce was very rich as well.
We asked for no potatoes with our entrée. So, they automatically substituted potatoes with sauté mushrooms; a very nice touch. Food & wine prices were a bit high; same as higher end restaurants in San Francisco.
Had the pasta with clams- very average. I expected better for the $23
price tag. Not sure if the clams were fresh or frozen , they were chopped
and I prefer clams served in the shell. No salad or veggies with dinner
thats extra. Staff was attentive but overall I really thought it was overpriced.
The general rule of thumb in Lodi for decades was that this was the best restaurant in town because it was the most expensive restaurant in town. The decor is nice, the building fancy, the table settings elaborate. Entering Wine & Roses and being seated at a table is an experience that makes you forget you're in a small, suburban farm community in the central valley. The 'experience,' as well as the price is unequivocally that of a three or four star restaurant.
The problem with Wine & Roses is that the food itself doesn't actually match the setting or the bill. If I'm paying fifty dollars a head for a meal, I expect not just good food but great, gourmet food. The meal we were presented with however looked rushed and was cooked by amateurs. My fish overcooked, the portions of my brother's spaghetti left him hungry at meal's end, my father's steak was not cooked the way he had asked, and my mother was served bland soup for her birthday. The food was of a caliber we would not have put up with had it been a fraction of the price.
Since then, Wine & Roses has become a running joke in our family. It is the ultimate symbol of feigned-opulence, scamming unwitting and naive customers into forking over their hard earned dollars - purportedly for a superior experience that leaves them feeling broke, hollow, used, and raped.
We spent the night after our wedding here. It was really nice and cute. The room was clean and really pretty. The room was super cold when we walked in so we had to turn the heater on too. The river rocks on the floor were a little slippery. The balcony was nice. There was some birds that kept making noise which we saw later I guess they are pets of the hotel. They have a huge aviary. Which I guess isn't that customer friendly. We had brunch the next morning which was really good. I loved the homemade apricot jam.
Overpriced and overrated.
This one is a heartbreak... I went there on a recommendation. And a take my friends' recs *very* seriously.
Location:
- not too bad, they've done some very necessary renovating to their barrier on the courtyard.
- other than that, it's really in the middle of nowhere.
Food:
- not michelin worthy, but it's not your local fast food either. Frankly, it's overpriced, but for a romantic dinner, it's not too bad.
Conclusion: interested for wedding. That's where things turn sour.
The email published on the website is Amanda. She's great. Email her and you've got a response within 24 hours. Where it doesn't work out so well is the person who's *actually* in charge of weddings, Angela. She doesn't respond to emails, doesn't answer or return phone calls (oh, wait, it's only been 2 weeks. My fiance must just be impatient). Sorry guys, but for something that's already quite overpriced in the middle of nowhere (let's call it for what it is), it'll have to be a no-go.
350 miles and five hours later, I pulled off the I-5 N and into the lot of my hotel (Best Western) which is one of the only three temporary residences in Lodi, CA. With my luggage tossed on my bed I gazed out the window and absorbed my view, a dusty two lane highway bathed by the neon signage of its two companions, a Taco Bell and a Rest Easy Truck Stop.
Where the eff am I?
Yes, I chose the cheapest hotel in the city and it was located on the outskirts. However, I consider this entire town an outskirt. The best way I can describe this place is through an SAT style analogy.
Pechanga is to Las Vegas as Lodi is to Napa
Disclaimer: this review is through the perception of an often times arrogant snooty asshole who has lived in heavily populate areas from the west to east coast his entire life. Towns that have fewer than 80,000 people make me paranoid even though its inhabitants could possibly be the nicest people on earth. I don't care. I am blinded by my ignorant bias and imagination toward horror movies i.e. Deliverance and The Hills Have Eyes.
Seriously, what the eff am I doing here?
I made this journey for a wedding. If the groom hadn't happen to be a long beloved childhood friend, I would have gladly mailed back the RSVP card with a checked box "NO" along with a set of clearance priced oblong wine glasses from the Crate and Barrel registry. Maybe you stopped reading this by now, but those of you who have made it this far will understand why I prefaced this review with paragraphs of LA snoot.
Down an unassuming road flanked by strip malls (I'm not even sure if these half assed congregations of businesses would qualify for that term), tucked away in the back was an amazing venue, the Wine and Roses.
A candle lit ivory tent pitched in the center of the main garden provided the space for the ceremony. Wine and hors d'œuvre were served on a clay tiled/brick patio covered by a canopy ceiling of deep green branches hung with soft lighting. The main ballroom exuberated an ambient warmth that was further accentuated by an attentive serving staff and charming lady bartender. The food was surprisingly good for wedding mass fare. On my plate was a perfectly prepared medium rare steak with steamed vegetables and delicious mashed potato. The bar was richly stocked with everything from Makers to a bottle of 18 year Macallan.
As much as I wanted to continue to participate in the circle jerk of big city bourgeoisie arrogance, I have to admit that I zipped up and admired this intimate and romantic wedding.

Mother's Day Brunch was oh-so-scrumptious and the complimentary potted African Violet for each mom made the whole experience that much nicer. Making reservations on http://opentable.com was a sinch and I received a nice confirmation call from the restaurant a couple of days before. Overall, the service was friendly- they even gave my sister a free mimosa while she was waiting for us late birds to get there. I agree with other reviewers that the food is good, not spectacular. However, it is correctly priced and the overall warmth of the venue makes up for it. One area they could definitely improve was the coffee, which was really weak. After the yummy mimosas and sumptuous buffet, I really could have used an espresso to perk me up on the ride home.

I have been to W & R many times for various reasons. My first experience was a wedding. Beautiful, outdoor wedding! Everything seemed perfect. I met with one of their wedding planners and was shocked by the price. For 100 guests, 12,000 minimum just for food! Needless to say, I did not get married there
Their restaurant is cozy and charming. It is in an old (but renovated) farm house. The food is tasty and they service is great. However, once again highly priced.
I went back last month to their Spa and LOVED IT! My fiance and I had a couples massage. It was the most relaxing experience ever. 90 minutes of attention that didn't require a word! We followed up the massage in the steam room and the hot tub. They also had a "tranquility" room with granola, water, tea, and a fireplace with blankets. I would go back weekly if I could!
I love it here. We went here for my sisters bachelorette party and stayed for two nights in one of the suites. Talk about spoiling yourself. This is truly a spa experience and it was worth the drive for me. Everything from the room, to the service and the ambiance of this place screams relaxation. It's nicely tucked away from it all and the services are top notch. We were not bothered by anyone and we were treated like royalties. The quiet room was very serene and warm and inviting. After our services, we got to lounge in their outdoor jacuzzis and enjoyed wine by the fire pits. This is great for a romantic getaway or just to pamper yourself. Ahhh, heaven.

We went to Wine and Roses for a wedding last weekend. Having never been to Lodi we had no idea what to expect. We were really impressed with this hotel - the lobby and rooms were fantastic! The wedding was beautifully done - the setting, the flowers, the food, everything was very tasteful. I'd highly recommend this site as a wedding venue as well as a hotel!

Three stars because the grounds are beautiful.
One star for food. Horrible! Over priced!
I have stayed here and I highly recommend. The beds are incredibly comfortable but who wants to spend that much money in Lodi?! Not me!
Prior experiences have shown me the staff is usually not as knowledgable as they should be or very unprofessional and often rude. However, as for my last dining experience I thought I'd inlcude a more detailed review for Saturday July 19, 2008.
*** Restaurant Review Only ***
Well, I must firstly state for the price of this place my expectations are high.
My girlfriend and I actually chose this place partially because it was within walking distance, but also because we wanted crepes (brunch) and we wanted to splurge to spoil ourselves as this was a special occasion for many things to us.
We arrived at 11:45 and were seated immediately.
We had a reservation, brought our own bottle of champagne, and sat outside. The corking fee is 19 dollars and let me say the cheapest price for a bottle of bubbly (in this case Korbel) is 41 dollars, so even if you just bring your favorite bottle of Korbel (often priced around 9 dollars in the store) you'll be saving a small bundle.
We started with the cheese plate, and I mean *come on* 13 dollars for a cheese plate is reasonable - but not for the 3 tiny little pieces of cheese they gave us. It was plenty for the two of us, but would be meager for 3 or more. I longed for some more elegant or lesser known cheeses, so again I was somewhat let down; first by price for portion, then by quality. They served a "glorified" form of munster, a NY cheddar, and a cambozola. Normally, I eat these cheeses regularly in my own home so none too impressed.
We followed up with the crepes which were probably the highlight of the meal. The crepes did taste a bit not too homemade, on the slightly firm rubbery side, but it was served with fresh sweet chopped strawberries and gooey brown sugar bananas.
The crepes were served by the apparent most professional of the staff; fair to mention he was the only person to pour for us besides our initial pour. I've never before been to a "fancy" restaurant where I had to keep clumsily pouring myself; since the bottle was put on a bit of a (nice touch) pedestal. He also joked with us in a nice manner making us feel more attended to; if only all the staff was trained this way.
We felt quite a bit ignored despite the waitress doing her best telling us she was not, and to just flag her down to order. But she was doing so many tables, this proved to be more difficult that initially perceived.
We ended our meal with entrees, neither appeared too much to rave about but still good. She got the tomato mock benedict and I got the crab sandwich.
And I must admit it was decent of the staff when we moved tables outside, as I am fair skinned and started to burn.
The highlight of our humor was when the bus boy came to clean our within eyeshot recently departed table. He sighed as he looked at the bit of food still on the placemat, he looked around, and then flipped it over nonchalant.
Hmm, I wondered, how long had it been since the placemats were properly cleaned?
Also, make sure you make a point about ordering your food fairly quickly because you will be WAITING and waiting and waiting otherwise. We spaced our orders thinking it a good idea to digest between courses, but instead just did a lot of sitting around. Don't be afraid to order back to back, they will wait until you appear to be done before bringing out your next order.
All in all, this place gets 4 stars for effort, decent food, and ambiance; but loses 1 star for not being the step up to the price they are charging for, as well as slightly inattentive service - and well, let's face it - the placemat incident really makes me take 1 more. I don't want to think I'm paying so much and that the area around me isn't truly clean.
I don't think I'd eat here again simply for the price, as I can make the same food at home cheaper, and I can make better food also for cheaper.
And my girlfriend did point out, "Well, this isn't Wine Country after all. It's just Lodi."
I love many of the wines in Lodi and they try, but will someone please put a gourmet toursit-y place here where I can get an excellent meal to go with the good wines?!
If you aren't someone who eats out a lot or eats really fancy often, this place will be good for you, but honestly I won't be going back.

We attended a wedding here last month. I've included my spa review separate, but I'll include my hotel and wedding experience here.
Wedding - gorgeous grounds, good food and large banquet room. The wedding planner was ok.
Hotel - LOVED our room!!! This is up there with our favorite rooms we've stayed in, especially for the price! We stayed on a Sunday night so it was much more reasonable than what other people have told me about their rates. There are different themed rooms, so make sure to ask when booking what they have available. I had friends in the more modern rooms, which was really cool. Our room was more like an Italian villa, which we loved. Continental breakfast in the morning was great, although I don't remember any hot food. It was so relaxing to eat breakfast outside.
What a nice surprise in Lodi!! I truly wish you could pick up Wine & Roses and move it somewhere else.
We couldn't get a room at the hotel, but stayed at the signature suites around the corner. The rooms were very nice, clean and we kind of liked being a little out of the way. Just a short stroll to a beautiful but simple continental breakfast. The coffee was outstanding, which is all I realy care about anyway. The staff was unbelievably accomodating.
I wish we would have had a chance to eat at their other restaurant, and go to the spa. Oh well. next time!
We stayed the night here and our only complaint was the room was super cold - we had to turn the heater on to get into bed. The brunch the next day was amazing! Definetly will go back.

This is just a rating for the Wine & Roses Lunch ONLY...
Why the qualificaton? Because we've had below average quality entress at Dinner, but I can't recollect the entrees. I usually don't review places I haven't frequented recently.
What my kids and I had...
Starter -
Seafood Bisque (***) - Starter for my kids. The kids thought the Soup could've been thicker. I knew better than to order this Bisque, as different restaurants have their own idea how to prepare Seafood Bisque and at what consistency.
Entree -
Caesar Salad (****) - My daughter, Kathy's selection for Lunch. I never got to taste her selection. But I think now Wine & Roses and The Back Bay ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) are her favorite restaurants in Lodi.
Rib-Eye Steak Salad (*****) - This was my son's selection. I got to taste a little bit of the Salad. There was a unique taste to the meat... a la Paragary's ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) Chimichurri Sauce.
Half-Pound Angus Burger (**) - Today the dressing that accompanied the Burger was a Blue-Cheese and Mustard mixture, not the Spicy Remoulade which I had last time I was here. The Blue Cheese Hamburger at School Street Bistro ( http://www.yelp.com/bi... ) accomplished the task a with better success than did Wine & Roses today. Appreciated the toothpick in the center of the Hamburger, though.
Dessert -
Chocolate Mousse on a soft Oatmeal Cracker (*****) - around 3 1/2 inches in diameter and about 2 inches high... this dessert literally melted in your mouth... DEELICIOUS and delicate! I kind of commented to my Chef son that the Chefs at Wine & Roses might try Chocolate Mousse on Hard Chocolate Candy. But I got outvoted! Kathy and Kevin said it was perfect as it was!
Wine -
My son tried to order a White Zinfandel from the local winery, Jewel Collection... but they were out! Second choice .... a White Zinfandel from Vino con Brio ( ***** http://www.yelp.com/bi... ), another local winery. Great! Each time we have had a meal here, the wait-staff has been especially knowledgable about the local wine selections. This rating is probably more reflective of the waitress who made the wine recommendation than of the wine itself.
Service (*****) -
I've commented on Paragary's wait-staff as distant and reserved... like their ambiance. I don't know if Wine & Roses has a standard for their wait-staff when hiring... but it seems they do... Every time my kids and I have come here, either for Lunch or Dinner, the waiter has been congenial, conversant, and very, very friendly! Our waitress for Lunch was from Linden and we had a good time discussing various topics while I was taking my digital pictures.
Ambiance (****) -
Wine & Roses has definitely succeeded in achieving the Bed & Breakfast type of atmosphere! Remember the Norman Rockwell Saturday Evening Post paintings? Interior of main building reminds me of that atmosphere... seems like you're dining in someone's large dining room from years gone by... But, to me, that is more oriented towards a certain segment of the population. This atmosphere could be a turn off for some people.
Although my kids and I dressed down casual... I would suspect most people would be more comfortable dressed business casual while dining at Wine & Roses... even if there is no formal dress code. About half the diners at Lunch were the more elderly.... and they treated Lunch as a time to dress-up! And there were other diners that would dress-up on any occasion... such as a Julia Roberts look-alike dressed in a faux-leopard patterned outfit.

I went here for a friends wedding and it was beautiful! The food was also great too!
Loved the spa! Definitely a must for the end of the work week.
We ate there last night. The food was good but I think it is way overpriced for what you get. The highlight of the meal was a beet salad ($10.00) which was beautifully presented, a work of art. The Caesar salad ($9.00) was small but okay tasting. The short rib dinner was delicious but once you cut the fat off the one rib they give you there was maybe 2-3 bites of meat left. My shrimp risotto was wonderful and filled me up but I think a man would want more than 4 shrimp for $30.00. The bread that accompanies dinner was a little tasteless. I'm guessing it was a sort of foccaccia bread, very moist with sundried tomatoes. The setting is lovely but all in all I doubt if I go back.
Restaurant has decent food and good service.
"What a romantic and elegant setting. One could easily spend hours there. We did! Beyond a spectacularly prepared meal, excellent, friendly and knowledgeable service, the atmosphere is so comfortable. Live jazz at the bar, beautiful gardens - it's like Hawaii meets Tuscon in a Northern California Spa. IMO they could use some more foreign wines on the list, but all in all...in Lodi, Ca... Who knew? Be sure to ask to be served by Jim. He'll truly craft the meal experience for you! If you can, stay over & pamper yourself in the spa - It's really a little blissful taste of heaven."
The rooms: absolutely excellent. Our room was part of the newer construction, not the "historic" inn, and it was airy, spacious, and well-designed. One of the first "modern" design boutique rooms I've been in that are actually comfortable and inviting and don't make me feel like I'm in a Swedish indie film.
The restaurant: wonderful. I had the roasted pork shoulder, which is admittedly becomming a standard item for upscale New American menus, but which was nevertheless excellently executed. Service is prompt.
The spa: Weeeeeeeellllllllllll, had a bit of a problem here. If by "bit of a problem," you mean "the massuse forgot the appointment and didn't show up until the appointment was almost over (i.e., 50 minutes late)."
The spa turned what would have been a solid 5-star review into a 4-star review with a serious caveat: if you're going to use the spa, take some precautions. Given the pricing for the spa (and the resort itself), this is unacceptable service. The spa's attempt to make up for this service bust was (1) to make the massage free [gee, you think? And here I had been planning to pay for the massage I didn't get.]; and (2) leave a short message on my answering machine at home saying they sure were sorry about that. Wine & Roses is attempting to be a serious, destination resort in the heart of Lodi's up-and-coming wine country. The hotel and restaurant more than succeed at this, and for that reason, I'll go back sometime this winter. But the spa isn't up to snuff yet---they followed up on a horrible service breakdown with a very lukewarm customer service effort.
Executive summary: stay at the inn, eat at the restaurant, avoid the spa and you'll have a wonderful weekend.

I actually felt bad for the staff. Most were exceptionally customer service oriented. They just didn't have much to offer.
The bar and tasting room were out of wines we wanted. The food just wasn't that great. The lobster bisque was horrible and my $30.00 medium rare steak was served very well done. The "gourmet" continental breakfast that is included with a nearly $300.00 room package consisted of cold hard boiled eggs and a few other cold items. There was very little selection in that offering and none of it was "gourmet".
The staff, however, was very pleasant and tried very hard to make things right. The manager even called the next day and offered a free room if we chose to stay another time. While that definitely was appreciated, neither of us felt it was reason enough to visit again.
Great and surprising location! When you first drive into this place you aren't sure what to expect. The rooms are VERY nice and the restaurant has an amazing BBQ Pork sandwich. The staff is the cream of the crop of Lodi (read what you will into that), and the weather is damn hot.
We had a great weekend and would come back here for another event!

This is one of the nicest places in this area to dine. Great ambiance and exquisite seasonal menu. Great place for a formal date, romantic evening, or a quiet dinner with family and friends. The food is delicately prepared with a great local wine list and attentive wait staff.

I came here today for my interior design class field trip. We are working on a project about renovating and redesiging a space, just like this place has over the years. For example, their restaurant was actually a home before the remodel.
The gardens were beautiful, the rooms were modern and sophisticated, the spa was relaxing, the banquet room was huge, everything was spotlessly clean, everything was awesome! As our tour guide said, they are truly a hidden gem in Lodi.
I attended a wedding here, and the location is absolutely beautiful. Just stunning. Nice gardens; the wedding was outside, and it was set in a lovely garden. Good food as well. Probably a teensy bit better than most wedding food I've eaten.
Because of its independent nature, this is a very un-generic place to have a wedding. Can't speak to the rooms, because we didn't stay in one, but heard from the bride and groom that the room was fantastic, and the little honeymoon touches were very sweet.

I attended a wedding at Wine & Roses last night (please note: I did not stay) The grounds were beautiful, and they had numerous servers offering ice water before and after the ceremony, a key detail when the temperature is 105 degrees. The food served during the cocktail hour was among the best I've had at a wedding, with little croissant puffs stuffed with mushrooms and delicious lamb chops. I was excited for dinner.
There was a buffet, and I was at one of the tables that was towards the end to be dismissed to the line. That was when the carving station came to a halt. We stood there, with full plates getting cold, for 10-15 minutes. Next, they brought the meat out. When they sliced off the first piece, it was clear that it was nothing short of tartar and sent it back in. I understand that they may have underestimated the amount of meat required for this gathering, but couldn't the doneness have been checked in the kitchen instead of on the floor where all of us salivated over it?
The staff did a great job of making sure glasses were full, etc, and the wine was poured liberally.

This is a great place to have a nice dinner!
The food and service we had the other night stellar. The staff was attentive, knowledgeable, and friendly. No stuffiness here.
I had the seared ahi and crab cakes appetizers, the organic greens salad, and the duck confit entree. Everything was well-executed and delicious. Every aspect of my experience dining there was altogether pleasant.
Two years ago, when I found out that my boyfriend's christmas party would be in Lodi, I was all........oooooh. great. this'll be fun *sigh*. But I was pleasantly surprised when we arrived at Wine and Roses.... what a beautiful place! I now look forward to his parties. : )
The food is delicious. This is not a place where food quality suffers when served in large quantities for banquets. The salads and main courses are awesome but I look forward to the desserts..........yumm!!
We also stay the night after the party and the rooms we've stayed in are SO SO nice. They don't look like hotel rooms at all! When I wake up in the morning I forget that I'm in a hotel (and no, its not because of the booze from the night before!) because the beds are so comfy. Walls are painted in warm colors, the bathrooms are spacious and have huge mirrors and there is a little TV built into the wall in front of the toilet. The snacks and wine in the bar area are of good quality and they don't put a huge mark up on them at all. The patio area (or balcony ) is awesome!! Its pretty large with a fullsize table and chairs - great for hanging out and drinking wine and looking out into the beautiful courtyard.
Also, at the check-in area is so cool! It has a cozy lounge area with a fireplace and a guy playing the baby grand and singing......
If this was closer to SF, I'd SO have my wedding here!! dammit.....

Romantically, it's absolutely beautiful! Dinner menu and Lunch menu changes with the season. This fall I had the pasta with really thick noodles. It was pretty good. I finished off with Creme Brulee with a chalk of dark chocolate on top. I had a quick and simple dish. I've had many dishes from events and weddings there several times and their tri-tip, and chicken, and shrimp is delightful. I just like a little more flavor in my food. overall, i think this is a beautiful place to enjoy if you like a nice and relaxing place. service is exceptional.

I visited Wine & Roses when i visited my sis during spring break and we went here for Sunday brunch...
its a very cute and nice place...nothing really like this in Hawaii...
its kinda located in the middle of nowhere...haha
I had the fruit crepes..they were so light and fluffy...Mmm~
my sister had i think pancakes and my brother had a BBQ pork sandwich.
they have pretty pig portions and everyone loved what they ordered...i couldn't finish my food cause it was just too much...
they also serve warm bread...with fresh butter, salt, black pepper and white pepper...^^
This is a "VERY BEAUTIFUL PLACE. HAVE YOU EVER SEEN SUCH A BEAUTIFUL PLACE". That's just a little inside joke with some people I know. But honestly the quote says it all, the place is very beautiful. I would give this place a perfect score based on setting alone. The food is just not that good. You would expect more from a place like this. It is overpriced for the quality of food. But... If you do want a romantic getaway, this is the place to go. Wine and dine with each other and stay the night, I have never stayed here so if someone does please post about everything! I'm curious about it.
My parents used to own a small piece of the Wine and Roses, so we ate there a lot for a while. I even spend my wedding night there! The place was nice (I say was because I have honestly not been there in a while), the food was pretty good, I loved the birds and animals that came around when you ate outside. Nice ambience outside and in. A bit loud inside, but oh well. Things were pretty good, but I don't remember being WOW'ed.

Every year during the first weekend in March I get together with three of my closest girlfriends from college and we do a spa/wine tasting weekend (in lieu of exchanging birthday and Christmas gifts we treat ourselves to a little pampering and a lot of booze). This year we chose Wine & Roses, a hotel and day spa 45 minutes outside Sacramento in Lodi. I was a little skeptical to begin with but, cowtown aside, this was one of the best spa weekends we've had.
I called a month in advance to book a room for the four of us. There were only two spaces for groups of four, either the Spa Tower or the Garden Room, and we chose the Spa Retreat. It was great for the four us given it was situated right above the spa. The Spa tower has its own security entrance with a gate and staircase to the suite. Outside the suite there is a patio and given the beautiful weather this weekend we spent a lot of time out there. The suite was minimally decorated with deep colored walls and interesting artwork. The first thing we noticed when we walked in was the huge flat screen teev hanging on the wall downstairs (there is a somewhat smaller version on the wall in the upstairs bedroom). Downstairs there is a sitting area, a large dining table for four and a queen bed. There isn't actually a kitchen but there is a counter area with a sink and small refrigerator (bring your own booze as the honor bar was outrageously priced) and small coffee pot. Upstairs there is a comfy arm chair, a desk (buy a day of high speed internet for $13) and a squishy king size bed. There is only one bathroom (this is a challenge with four girls) but it has a huge bathtub and raised stone floor (a little massage for your bare feet!). There was a wedding going on in the gardens that night and the wedding party enjoyed themselves all night long!
The spa was magnificent. The gal at the counter who checked us in was really patient and helpful. We each had a cushy robe, comfy towels and a pair of slippers in our cramped lockers. The women's locker room is really small but there weren't too many women in it at once but with just the four of us it felt somewhat cramped. There are large bathrooms, showers and a very steamy steam room. The tranquility room has big, comfy wicker arm chairs with large ottomans where we waited for our therapists and you could help yourself to hot tea, cucumber or lemon flavored water, oranges and a really good granola mix along with copies of my favorite Sunset magazine! We each had different services but I chose the 60 minute "wellness" massage which is basically a traditional Swedish massage. My therapist was Alicia and she was really good. The other girls enjoyed their services too, especially the facials (the esthetician will write you a "prescription" based on your skin type/ailments). After our treatments we relaxed in front of the fire pit in the outdoor water garden (I don't know what kind of wood they were burning but it smelled really good).
After our day at the spa our blood alcohol levels dropped drastically so we sped over to Garry's dive bar for pre-dinner cocktails. This was great because one of the patrons was a small dog dressed in his Harley attire, hat and all. This little dude had his own barstool, too. The bartended stepped out to have a smoke as we yelled over the jukebox. After Garry's we stumbled over to the Lodi Beer Company for some pub grub. The food wasn't exactly remarkable but I did enjoy the hard cider on tap, it was tasty. We got back to the room, caught up on the Anna Nicole scandal on the teev and played card games (good thing ours was an unattached room as we aren't the quietest of hotel guests!).
We reluctantly checked out of the suite the following morning, enjoyed the complimentary continental breakfast in the restaurant and hit the road for Chocoholics in Clements. Good times...

Please note that this review is based on the restaurant, not the hotel. I've eaten here a handful of times and am always happy with the service. The food is satisfying. The menu is creative. But the dining area can get a bit loud.

I went here the first night I got into Lodi. Aesthetically, you can't get better than this. It is gorgeous and I think i want to stay here the next time I stay here. The food was good but it didn't knock my socks off. I had a chicken dish with Risotto and it was good but again didn't knock my socks off. Pretty pricey too but it was a corporate tab so I didn't mind.
Romantic Dining In Elegant Historic Lodi
I had read a glowing write up in AAA's Via Magazine about Wine and Roses, a B&B and restaurant located in the heart of Lodi wine country. I had to try it. Wine and Roses is located on an unassuming main drag off West Turner Road at Sacramento. The grounds are set back from the busy road, transporting you into an oasis of lush gardens and spa-like buildings. The grounds also house the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center, which has an expansive tasting bar featuring a wide selection of regional wines, interactive and educational exhibits on grape growing and winemaking, and a gift shop featuring handcrafted products and Lodi giftware. Wine tasting in Lodi is hit and miss. Many of the wineries are still "up and coming," which means they need a few more years of experience to be truly exceptional. However, the Lodi Wine & Visitor Center has already gone through the masses and serves only the exceptional wines. B&B guests taste at a discounted rate.
The Wine and Roses restaurant serves high quality California regional cuisine made of local and seasonal ingredients. Wine and Roses offers lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. It has a casually elegant setting in a historic building. Next to the dining room is a lively and cozy piano bar, where you can lounge on a comfortable couch next to a roaring fireplace and listen to all the old standards, and after a few glasses of excellent wine, maybe sing along as well.
The grounds are beautiful with lush landscaping and splashes of color. When the weather is nice, dining outside on their patio is lovely. Inside the restaurant, candlelight flickers throughout the romantic dining room. Service is friendly and attentive.
The cocktail menu is lush and creative. I tried the tropical Bahama Mama, then the chic Velvet Rose. They were both very tasty. The wine list features many local wines as well as wines from throughout the California Wine Country. We tried the Dungeness Crab Cakes on iceberg lettuce with a tamarind honey glaze as an appetizer and the presentation and flavor were both good. The Fried Calamari Salad was tasty, with grapefruit, green papaya, avocado and a spicy citrus vinaigrette. As an entre we tried the Seared Scallops and Ahi and the Rib Eye. The Rib Eye was delicious. The Ahi came on a celery root slaw with lentil-crusted sea Scallops on carb-friendly celery root puree, and was also artful and delicious. For dessert, we went whole hog and sampled the Three Cheese Selection, Lemon Meringue Tart with Blackberry Sauce, and the Bread Pudding, paired with local Vino Con Brio's Late Harvest Zinfandel. After all that, we lounged by the piano bar for a while than stumbled into our posh lodgings. It was quite an experience.
Their Sunday Champagne buffet brunch is also excellent. It features a large variety of items including made to order omelets, fruits, prime rib, salads, entrees, desserts, and side dishes.
