Review Highlights
I was at Windmill Farms yesterday to get pumpkins! We got a huge one for our house & some smaller ones for my office. I thought they were good prices, pretty low for the size. I also had some friends meet me there so we could take pictures of their kids in the pumpkin patch & with the animals. The animals are so cute & a different thing since most places just have bouncy houses. We got some really adorable pictures of the babies & it will be neat to see how they have grown every year, we plan to do it again next year.
I have actually started getting all of my produce here. It is less expensive than the super market & they seem to have more variety & it's very fresh. They usually have coupons on their website, so check that out. In this economy every bit helps.
In response to the review yesterday, the 1star complainer about the animals. Seems like out in the open for all to see would be a strange place to put mistreated animals. I thought the animals all seems cared for, clean & eager to nibble food out of hands. There were employees around checking on the animals & the area they are kept in seemed clean to me. The only one that was a little stinky was the area where the pigs were & if you hung around for any period of time & saw them trashing it you would know why. I would assume that Windmill is cleaning the pens more often then where they are kept every other month of the year? They are pigs & there is a reason why when you tell your kids their room is a pig pen, that means it's a mess. These animals did not seem mistreated by any stretch of the imagination. Also I am the one who told the management that you were complaining to customers about the animal care, you brought it up to the customers not them to you. I stood near to see what happened & I couldn't even hear the conversation, so I'm sure the yelling was also another exaggeration on your part. I did however notice that by you moving the rabbits around they were having territory issues & were humping each other quite a bit & you mentioned that you changed their food?? I'm not sure how it works with rabbits, but I know with most animals they are not ok w/their food being changed, it's something you need to do gradually & are you providing that food to the owners of the animals for the other 11months out of the year? I think it's people like you that cause problems for small businesses & really should find something better to do with you time than create problems where there isn't one. You are of course entitled to your opinion & your review no matter how far off base it was.
Now this is how a produce stand should be set up. It is clean, well maintained and the choices of seasonal produce are spectacular if not overwhelming. I literally bought more than I could use for the week but I just couldn't help it, everything was so enticing. To the fresh organic strawberries out of Watsonville to the myriad of colorful pluot hybrids to them sweet and beautiful mother fuckin' heirlooms (http://www.yelp.com/to...).
I even talked to a delivery person out in the parking lot and they were receiving produce straight from Salinas. Local produce with peak quality at outstanding prices. Gotta love living in California. This is a diamond in the rough out here in sterile San Ramon, where you'd think Whole Foods would kill a stand like this, but there were a lot of patrons, so good for them.
To secure the solid fifth star, it shares a huge gravel parking lot with the Outpost, a local dive bar. What goes better after shopping for mother fuckin' heirloom tomatoes than to sit down for a pint o cold beer. Perfection, I must say.
This place should be protected by a historic register. I didn't know what to expect b/c generic, concrete development has squelched the life (and local business) around Windmill Farms. Blink & you'll miss it... unless you notice the landmark In & Out across the street.
At first, I thought this would be a temporary roadside stall. It looks the part when you drive up, but there's a permanent looking structure in the back. That's where the cookies, breads, carbohydrates, etc. are.
I would buy EVERYTHING here if I could... the produce was fresh. Organic produce was clearly marked and not that much more expensive. (FYI -- crops grown with pesticides are still organic if you know chemistry... you know carbon-based structures.)
Prices are competitive with supermarkets that get wholesale, collective bargains... and you can use your debit card if you don't have cash.
All I can say here is "WOW"!! Every time I stop here I am treated to some of the best prices for some of the freshest fruit and veggies around. I wish I could say I found this place originally because I was such a healthy fruit and veggies guy that I was just drawn to Windmill Farms Produce by some super hidden force of nature, but alas, that would be a lie.
I am an incredible In-N-Out "Double Double" junkie and if I discover a location near where I have to do business, I will stop and eat.
Well, it turns out there is an In-N-Out directly across the Street (San Ramon Rd) from Windmill Farms Produce and when you pull out of In-N-Out parking lot, you have to make a right turn and make a U-turn at the stop light to go back the other way. Well, this U-turns you right into Windmill Farms Produce and thus my story for finding this place.
I have been a total of about 5 times now and each time the fruit I have gotten has been great. There is a cooler in the middle with all organic fruit and the prices are more than fair.
I'll be back!!!
If you can't wake up early enough to make it to the Farmer's Market saturday morning, this is the next best thing. Good variety of high quality local produce. Fruits and veggies are much fresher and more flavorful than the supermarkets!
I was expecting, oh I dont know, something different I think. I was expecting better prices than say Safeway, but I really didnt see any. I dont know what to think about this place actually.
My husband eats apples everyday and we are out so I used that as an excuse to go buy him some. I bought a pre packed bag of Fuji Apples for him. I havnt really looked at them to see how good they are yet.
I then saw that they had some 3 lb bags of Tangarines. I have been looking for Tangarines this whole season. I know that their out of season but I thought what the hell I loooooove Tangarines so Im getting these to munch in my office.
Uh, yuck. They were so mealy and dry I could have used them to scrub my kitchen floor. Im sad now. You would think that they would notice this and not sell these.
I did get a big bag of fortune cookies for only $3.39. I brought them back to the office to fill the bowl that usually holds candy. Now its full of fortune cookies. Good ones at that, not stale at all.
Open-air veggie shopping -- and it's incredibly inexpensive. Every time I visit I buy a ton of fruit and veg and it rarely gets beyond $12. Wow.
Although I see my last visit was $15.06. That's because I impulsively picked up a pineapple and a large mango, which I don't normally do. You may find yourself picking up things you'd don't usually try, because Windmill offers such a smorgasbord of fresh produce.
Dining at home on the cheap:
Buy a bunch of veggies, garlic, soy sauce, oyster sauce and sriracha chili sauce ("Rooster" sauce) and cook stir-fries at home all week long. Budget-friendly!
As if this weren't enough, Windmill Farms regularly have Yelp deals (see top of this category, if they have a deal on it'll be in a little rectangular promo box), and website deals:
http://www.windmillfar...
Currently the above page shows two coupons: a general produce coupon for 10% off your entire purchase, and a Tuesdays Senior coupon for 10% off entire purchase.
It just gets better and better at Windmill.
The produce at Windmill Farms is SO much better than what you get at the supermarkets! They offer produce grown locally which I really like and have many organic selections as well. The fruit is always amazingly sweet and the tomatoes actually have flavor (unlike the ones you get at the grocery store)! Not to mention how reasonably priced their produce is! Just be aware they don't accept credit cards and charge a small fee to use your ATM. Other than that I have nothing but great things to say about this place!!!
This is my farmers market. Everything is cheap per pound and there's so much selection.
I was SOOOOOO happy when I found this place! While Safeway is charging @#$% $1.00 per lemon, Windmill Farms charges $1.00 for FOUR! Everything is far, far less than a grocery store - and better.
But the real reason I adore this place is the heirloom tomatoes. I crave heirloom tomatoes. I love heirloom tomatoes. I need heirloom tomatoes. Fortunately, Windmill farms has heirloom tomatoes. They charge significantly less than grocery stores that have them, and they are far better quality. The only way you can get better ones is by driving out to Brentwood - but that's only after July. Windmill Farms gets them in early June; huge, gorgeous and ripe.
They have just about everything else you could want, including non-produce items.
Now I am having second thoughts about posting this because I'm afraid they'll sell out, so forget everything I wrote! Don't go here!
I love this place! Much more convenient then going to the grocery store. They have alot of organic, local veggies at a great price!
My dad and my mother in law make it a point to go here when they are visiting from So Cal. My dad still talks about this place when I visit down there. They love it!
Great place to visit in the fall. Kids will love the petting zoo and pumpkins everywhere!
Sidenote: I was told by a co-worker that the City is trying to close this place down so they can build a new shopping center in it's place. $$$$ Keep an eye and ear out and let me know if you hear anything new about this!
I took my two kids yesterday to get pumpkins and check out the pumpkin patch and petting zoo. It was a great experience. They have decorated the pumpkin patch and it has great places you can plop your kids and take pics. I also went and bought all my fruits and veggies there for the week and I thought they were reasonably prices and looked good. The pumpkins are priced very fair. Great place to go with the family.
I like that most of the produce here is grown by local farmers. They have a great variety of fresh fruit, vegetables, grains and other interesting finds.
my only complaint is that sometimes the veggies arent removed from the market shelves before they start getting a little nasty. but i've seen that in large store chains as well.
After leaving wholefoods, i stop by windmill to buy a lot of my produce. you cant beat the prices and you still feel socially responsible!
I love this store! It becomes my regular market to get fresh vegetables, herbs, and fruits. The price is reasonable, some are cheaper than other stores, some aren't. They have lots of organic items in good price. I am absolutely happy with this store. But if they accept credit cards too, that will even better!
I give 4 stars even though I love this place so much. I wish they could take ATM card without fee but I understand why they need to charge fee. I am so thankful that I could get fresh local produce around here. Their price is amazing!! I just cannot believe how many bags I take home after paying so little.
They carry 'cocktail grapefruit' - I think it's what they call it - once in a while. They say they try to get it if they can. It's so sweet & delicious!! I bought bunch of them last year but I didn't see any since. I can't get it from any other groceries. Their seasonal oranges were delicious & so cheap!! Great tomato selections! I don't find their mushrooms any different than groceries.
I must say this place is amazing! All FRESH!!
huge parking space makes shopping easier.
Since 1974! Cute little market that sells local/organic produce with a nice breeze coming through. They specialize in buying from LOCAL farmers, which is great! I noticed the red leaf lettuce and the spinach were a little soggy/wilted and my fiancee & I stood there for about 10 min's feelin'-up every plum in the boxes but they were all mushy &/or had Granny-like wrinkled skin - maybe we got there after someone took all of the good stuff. Can be hit-or-miss sometimes -maybe due to the fact that items aren't moving as fast as a chain store, so with slower turn-over it's sitting around longer? Not sure. I still like them, anyways - and for the most part - everything is fresh. They also carry BBQ stuff, pastas & sauces, salad dressings, wines, dairy, breads, all of the basics & some gourmet-type stuff, too. Word to the wise: they don't accept credit cards and charge a small fee to use your ATM. Plenty of parking - right next to The Outpost (across from In-N-Out Burger). Cool staff.
Growing up in San Ramon and always going shopping with my Mom as a kid...this was always a fun place for us to go. I came here again today with my Mom to shop and I had so much fun! I bought a lot of yummy organic fruits and veggies that I wouldn' find elsewhere and walked away with 3 bags of stuff for less then $15. Not everything looks super fresh so you have to go for the good stuff. I wish I lived closer because it would be a place I come to every week!
The only downside...they do not accept credit cards....only ATM/Debit or Cash.
As my home cooking skills increase, so does my desire to not only try new foods but to try cooking along with the seasons. It seems ridiculous and irresponsible to pay for fruits and veggies shipped all the way from Chile when I've got plentiful California in my backyard. Sorry organic nazis, not quite there yet. Baby steps.
Saturdays mean work for me and therefore no chance to enjoy farmers' markets, so Yelp helped me out by revealing Windmill Farms. Produce was fresh and plentiful. The items in season were definitely the cheapest, as it should be. Green beans, red potatoes, radishes, asparagus, strawberries, herbs and lots of greens were all low prices and fresh! I got two bags full for about $14. I'm gonna try and hit this place before or after Costco runs. Like I said, baby steps. I can't completely ween myself off the big bad chain just yet.
I had to update my review. I just bought a LOT of veggies here. My basket was full and arm was achy by the time I was done, so the whole time I'm thinking to myself, that this would be like a $15 shopping trip... it was only $8! I bought green onions, cilantro, celery, red leaf lettuce, spinach, onions, bell peppers, etc. Anyhow, it definitely would have been much pricier at Safeway (especially since I got some organic items). Like I mentioned in my first review, the quality is also way better too.

All I can say is, to buy produce at Safeway or Lucky is a waste of money and quality.

This place used to be a dump about 10 years ago. Recently it has been converted into more of a farm stand with organic offerings. I still find the veggies and fruits to be on the so-so side. A lot of their Heirloom tomatoes had rotted or just didn't look very good.
Don't get me wrong, I support these moms and pops type of places, but it's really hit or miss with this place.
Can I give more than 5 stars?!? Seriously, I've been to fruit stands before but this place is by far the best! After going there a few times in the past, last night I perused the indoor part of it. To my surprise and delight, I stumbled onto their no carb/no calorie/no anything marinades, toppings and spreads in the back! As if this place wasn't already on the top of my list for being able to fill my shopping cart for less than $40! I have so much stuff in my fridge I'm going to have to have a party! I can't say enough good things about Windmill Farms. Check them out!
I've shopped here twice now that I pass it every day between home and work, and I will probably come back. It's a great place to stop when you just need to restock your kitchen with fruits and veggies but don't want to deal with the hassle of going to the supermarket.
The selection is good with a decent amount of variety. The place itself is pretty big for an outdoor fruit market, but I've noticed some of the stock is the same on each end. Was going to pick up some tomatoes yesterday but both batches I looked at had some that looked a bit past their prime, so I passed. But I ended up buying a mini-watermelon, a large red onion, three bananas, a bunch of broccoli and I think one other thing the grand total was $4.61. Granted, I was shopping for items that were a good price, but that seemed like a bargain to me. I find that I usually end up spending more and getting less when I go to farmers' markets.
Haven't dealt too much with the employees, but the ones who rang me up were fine. They've got a small section of other grocery items such as cheeses and tofu, salsas, cookies, snacks, etc. Some are brands you might not find in the average chain store.
I love this place. Fresh produce that lasts forever. Friendly staff, kid friendly and good prices. Be sure to bring cash and they don't take credit cards. I always fill my basket and have never spent more than $30.
Nice to have this place nearby. You won't usually find produce that beats the farmer's markets, but you can beat the supermarkets pretty easily here. Prices are very low compared to the Safeway or Albertson's, so it certainly isn't more pricey than a FM, and they always have some specials going on. You can count on the essentials (lettuce, apples, oranges - the regular stuff) being significantly less expensive than in stores. The produce is not the same as the FMs, as you can see the boxes in the back of the place. Much of it comes from the big farms. Have to say that you can get a bad fruit or veggie if you are not careful because they are sometimes a bit slow to rotate the stock, but it's not hard to tell the difference, right? Variety is good and you can get some pretty unusual stuff at times. Lots of different leafy greens to choose from.
They've got bulk grains, some breads and dairy, flowers, juices, beer, wine, etc. too. Just got some amazing salsa there today, in fact.
As you know, great produce, excellent prices. but beware of rotten raspberries, blackberries, anything in the berry family - so select carefully -
Perfect place to buy fruits and vegetables after stocking up on meat and other goodies at the nearby Costco.
My best friend has been telling me for the last few months to check out Windmill Farms. I've been recently disappointed by the fruit selection at the grocery chains and decided today to take a drive over to SR. The fruit selection is amazing and so delicious - I picked up some peaches, strawberries, honeydew as well as some spinach and cilantro. The price is amazing here too! I'll be definitely coming back here for my fruit and veggies!
Perfect, fresh produce for so cheap. The fruit is so much better than the major grocery stores. Great selection of Organic items too.
When I'm in the area, this is my choice for great produce.
Not the best outdoor produce stand, but certainly not the worst either. Usually Windmill Farms has pretty fresh produce, but, on occasion, the veggies aren't what you would expect from an outdoor market. Generally, however, the produce is top-notch. Lots of people are here during the summer and during the fall harvest season (for pumpkins). Recommended!
This is a great place to get fruits from during the summer when the fruits are in season. It's a bit more pricey than going to a Farmer's Market, but the produce is the same as you would get at one of those, so if you want seriously fresh fruits and vegetables in a bind this is the place to go.
WOW. Every time I indulge myself to a tasty yet unhealthy experience at the In N Out across the street I gaze across the street at the green awnings and ponder what it would be like to shop for these things called fruits and "vegetables" ( they are supposed to be good for you - who knew ?) at an open air market like this. I always tell myself that I will go check it out, but never do. Well Last Sunday I did. It was awesome. They have all sorts of yummy healthy things. They even have a large "organic" section for those of us that are that conscious about what is happening to our world because of bio-engineering ( but let me tell you ignorant people that insist on only eating organic those vegetables in the grocery stores are not really organic they just are kind of organic so they can legally label it that and charge more - but that is off topic and I will now return to my review if you would like to be further enlightened pm me. I can rant for days... ) Raspberries 99cents, Strawberries 99cent - all fresh and dont look like they have been on a truck for a month. They have a huge pumpkin selection and great choices for lunch fruit. I recommend checking this place out ! !
great prices. produce is always fresh....plus friendly service.
