Threw a faculty mid-year get together here and had a grrreat time. It is not easy catering to 35+ teachers and the waitress did an amazing job!! Drinks were consistently brought out, food orders were taken quickly, and even though people switched seats the waitress' amazing memory made it possible for everyone to receive the correct order without a hitch. Her attitude the entire time was also very positive.

One of the managers made planning the event very simple. Basically asked me first what I was wanting and then planned accordingly.

Winchesters was also a short walk to the bar hoping that later ensued.

Since this first experience I have gone back consistently for a nice beer. They have a number on tap.

A friend & I dropped in yesterday evening at 7:00 pm or so for a beer and a burger. Upon ordering the burgers, the bartender informed me that I'd need to provide a credit card so that she could put the order in on our behalf.

I admit that it didn't go over well with me at all, so I paid cash for everything, then called the manager (Jason) over to talk. He advised that it's policy to require a credit card (or prepayment) since guests sometimes run out on their checks and the servers are held financially accountable when that happens.

Basically, their policy presumes that customers will leave without paying their bill,  even those like me that have visited dozens of times for food and drinks. Fortunately, they won't have to worry about me any longer.

A great spot for sure!  Very nice outdoor patio with lots of tables, also an inside bar area.

We had a variety of things from the burgers (turkey and buffalo), tri tip, etc.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed.

Wish i could give this place no stars. This place has the worst possible customer service. My man and I went in there and sat down at the bar and all the bartenders were a bunch of bitches! They were rude and did not really care about anything!  I paid for my shot and and left no tip for the bitch and I probably won't go back there any more.

Took my wife out for dinner Wednesday night. We were seated by the blonde haired, young bitchy hostess. She asked if we wanted to sit inside or outside. We chose outside. She handed us our menus and walked away. She was rude. She never smiled. She was a bit condescending. Neither my wife nor I felt very welcome. SO WE GOT UP AND LEFT AND WENT TO DARGANS! They were very nice and we felt like our patronage was appreciated. I tried to call Winchesters manager from Dargans to tell them of our bad experience, but the phone just rang and rang with no answer. Customer service has really gone to the dogs. Its getting harder to find good service. I will give Winchesters another try. Hopefully it will be better or it will be my last time there. Attitude is everything! Why hire someone with a bad attitude when so many people would love to work there.

April 1st was the April Fool's Jester Bike Ride through downtown Ventura so it was the perfect night to have dinner on the patio at Winchester's for some prime people watching.

Even though it was a lil' nippy out, Winchester's has outside heaters that really crank  :)  And their draft beer selection is amazing.  It looked like hundreds on tap and taps even decorated the Western-themed restaurant.  We didn't care for the tunes but they were coming from an iTunes juke box.  People were choosing some interesting music ("Disco Ball Queen?")

I ordered the Garden Burger with fries and Honey ordered the Kobe Beef Burger with Swiss and Avocado with fries.  One of the best garden burgers I've ever had.  But, mayo was the only moist condiment.  They really, really need a "secret sauce!"  The fries were good and crispy, but would have been better with some fries shake or salt-n-pepper.  Winchester's need to kick up the flavor!  Honey liked his burger but said it didn't beat the Devil's Spit Burger at Dave's BBQ.

Beer.  I ordered the Humboldt Hemp Ale and Honey went for a strangely named Bamboozle, or something along those lines.  His beer was cold and delicious, with a sweet taste.  Mine was WARM (yuck!) AND as black as a Guiness.  Not good.  Not good at all.  If not for the crazy Jester's riding up and down the street distracting me, I would have thrown a tantrum over the beer.

Winchester's is a casual place to hang out and people watch, but it's not on the top of my list.

If you don't like meat or beer this place is not for you. They have some of the craziest selections of both at Winchesters. 41 beers on tap and all the meat you could ask for: elk burgers, buffalo burgers, ostrich burgers, kobe burgers, duck strips...you name the 'game' and they will serve it to ya.

I was not wowed by my buffalo burger but it wasn't bad either. The "it's leaner than beef" comment by our server sucked me in. The sweet potato chips were a little on the charcoal side for my taste, if I could do it over I would have ordered the fries.

All in all it was an A-OK place worthy of 3 stars. Don't think I'll be running back anytime soon. Maybe the next time I get a crazy craving for elk meat.

I am here quite often. I recently had a very bad experience though. Bad service-missing entrees. After the meal, some of which never came, we were charged for the food that they had forgot to bring us. The waitress and manager were not willing to accept the blame right away, which is very un-professional. I still like the place, they have good beer and food, but they need to have better service and staff

Wonderful hamburger, wonderful BBQ tri-tip sandwich, horrible service; yet at other tables their service looked good or better.  I got so impatient waiting for our server, I actually stood up and looked for her.  Takes a lot for me to do that.  Rootbeer cost $5 and rootbeer float cost $5, no brainier on that one.  Soda on menu has no cost listed, bill came, wow $5 for rootbeer.  Quick look at the menu and listed is a rootbeer float for $5, they brought us a cup of french vanilla to compensate.  I didn't like there rootbeer.  Enough with the rootbeer, the burger had a lot of juicy flavor and the bbq tri-tip sandwich had a wonderful sauce and nice crispy torpedo roll.  Looking forward on returning.

For being my first time in Ventura after dark, I decided that the Winchesters Grill and Saloon should get a nice rating. The ladies at the bar were friendly and helpful. They let my friend and I try a few different samples of what was on tap.

Being that this was the 4th bar I hit on Saturday night, I only really remember that I DON'T like Moose Drool. (It's right there on the list next to Arrogant Bastard. Yuck!)

If you're ever in doubt just stick with Blue Moon. ;0)

    Pros:
    Friendly Staff
Clean & quiet bathroom (extra star)
Open late (we walked in around 1am)

After a long hiatus, I returned to Winchester's this weekend for lunch and beer with a friend. Though I remembered enjoying the food, their ample selection of beer and their generously poured shots somewhat clouded my memories. Now, with the most recent visit fresh on my mind, I remember why I love Winchesters.

First off, 40 beers on tap. I'll say that again: Fourty. Beers. On. Tap. There's a pretty good selection, from a few micro-brews to beer you'd find at your neighborhood dive bar. Want a great beer? Try the Racer 5 IPA. Want a terrible beer? Order the mission IPA. We actually sent this one back; it was described by my friend, and I quote, "tastes like a band-aid." She was right. I'm pretty sure this was brewed with Avenue runoff and mixed with someone's foot. But I digress...

The food was great. I ordered the Barbary Coast Grilled Crab Sandwich with yam chips. My accomplice ordered the Elk Burger with fries; we were both very satisfied. If you get the yam chips, ask for some honey mustard sauce on the side...the manager recommended that and brought me some, and I'm glad he did. Pretty awesome.

The prices are a bit high here, but you do get what you pay for. The atmosphere is good, the service is prompt, the beer list extensive and the food pretty good. 2 entrees and 4 beers ran us about 54 bucks. Not terrible by any means, but if you're looking for a dirt-cheap meal, Jimmy's Slice is right down the street...

For true meat eaters, USDA Prime is an oxymoron.  Also, we know that Kobe beef actually means something beyond a trendy sounding menu option.

The wait staff is not trained to ask you how you would like your beef prepared, but they are trained to up-sell you.  Mushrooms and onions are an extra and will cost you $3.  I was lucky.  When I notified the manager about the unexpected charge on my bill, he let me off with a warning.  I guess I won't make that mistake again.

Winchester doesn't take any pride in their burger.  If you order it rare, they will deliver it to you served between two soggy sponges and you'll have to be careful when eating or the whole thing will slide into your lap.  You might need a fork and knife.

I would like to see just one place in Ventura serve a grass fed burger and sell it at a $12 price point.  Anything less is just an overpriced disappointment.

My wife and I have had several visits to Ventura. The last couple of times we discovered this great little restaurant.  The first things that come to mind is the service, creative dishes and more taps of great beer than I have ever seen.
It seems customer service is hard to find, not at Winchesters.  The waitresses were friendly and we were also pleasantly surprised to have either a manager and the last time an owner come to our table checking on our satisfaction.  That kind of old school service is rare.
We have tried the chicken sausage and stuffed mushrooms, both amazing.  For entrees we had on separate occasions the rib eye, hamburgers and my wife is always a sucker for the stake salad.
I wish we lived in Ventura.  It would be a regular stop for us.

My friends and I wanted something to eat after a movie on a Saturday night and I suggested this place after hearing they have a good vegetarian sandwich on the menu. Miraculously we got a table right away. The booths are small yet comfortable and the noise level wasn't too bad.
For being busy our drinks came to our table super fast. The waitress we had was very nice and very attentive.
I finally decided on a regular burger after looking at the different kinds of meat on the menu. I wasn't feeling adventurous enough for ostrich or buffalo. My husband ordered the grilled cheese sandwich. He said the flavors were all super great but that it was a little on the soggy side. Still, it's awesome that a steakhouse has a vegetarian option available. My burger was huge and the meat was cooked perfectly- a nice medium. I finished off my fries and took half the burger home. It warmed up nicely in the microwave and was still tasty the next day.
Our friends really enjoyed their drinks and meals as well. Happy tummies all around and a fun night with friends.

I came here with a small group of people while staying in Ventura overnight for business. We came here on a Sunday and were seated immediately. Our server was friendly and the atmosphere was fine. I ordered a sirloin steak and made clear that I wanted it rare to medium rare. Having worked in a steakhouse for five years, I asked specifically what they defined their medium rare as, and she told me that it had pink in it. I stated that I definitely wanted my steak to have red in it so I wanted it rare to medium rare. I also ordered a baked potato with only a side of butter. When the food came I immediately cut into the middle of my steak to see how it was cooked. My steak was medium in the middle and medium well on the outsides. A colleague at my table also received her steak overcooked. She chose not to send back her steak because she was so hungry. I called our server over and stated that my steak was overcooked and that I wanted it rare to medium rare (which is what I stated when I ordered). She looked at me and said, "oh ok, now I know how you want it," and took it back to the kitchen. Really? Me ordering it that way in the beginning was not enough???
10 minutes later she brought back my steak. I cut into it in the middle again and it was ice cold. I mean, i felt it with my finger. freezing. So, I called her over again and she took the steak back.
The manger then came out and said to me "i'm sorry you didnt like your steak. its hard to cook it that way." Really? it is hard to cook rare to medium rare? so hard that you give me raw instead?!

What really bothered me was that the manager interrupted me when I was telling him about my experience and he spoke to me in a very condescending manner. They did buy my steak - which I did not end up eating anyway. But the manager did not try to make me happy.

and...5 minutes after he chatted with me I saw him sitting down eating his dinner (I completely understand that but...) and drinking a glass of wine while on shift. not ok. I worked in restaurants, primarily steakhouses, for 10 years of my life.....and everything about this place and experience was horrendous.

    horrendous.

So this was my first visit to downtown ventura at night and my friend suggested that we go to Winchester's because it was a bar and it was chill enough so we could hang/talk. I'm sOOO glad we came here.

    1) The drinks were STRONG. I have never had a jack and coke too strong for me, but DANG, this was STRONG. Don't worry, I finished it :) They also made my screwdriver and pineapple + patron equally strong. It was ridiculous, but at least I got my money's worth?

    2) The drinks were decently priced, especially for a Saturday night. 5-6 bucks, depending if you get a well drink or a drink with the good stuff.

    3) The people were nice-ish, but it took forever at the bar to get a drink sometimes even though they weren't serving anyone. -1

I would DEFINITELY come back. This place is awesome and if you are looking for a good time/a place to get schwasted, come here!!

Michael S. suggested that we go here because among the other places to drink in downtown Ventura, you could probably have the easiest conversations here.  It's not as loud as the other places, I suppose.

I actually have no frame of reference to prove or disprove Michael's claim, but I do know enough to say that Winchester's is pretty legit.  It's got a nice western theme, very strong pours, and decent prices.  I think I only reserve that fifth star because their wells are very prone to give you a massive hangover.

I guess next time we check out this place, I'll try out their food offerings.

Can't say much about the place itself as didn't step into the restaurant proper and lunched on the patio. I was able to catch glimpses of a couple of games on the telly inside even though people probably thought I was staring at them. It was a nice day, so the patio was a perfect place to chill with view of the sea-green Ventura Public Library across the street.

Service was very attentive and quick, and perpetuated my habit of having my mouth stuffed with food whenever she came to check in on us, to which I could only try to smile and nod, maybe give a thumbs up. I totally worked the ostrich burger, and I've never had ostrich before. It looked like beef and tasted real similar, and it was good. The meat was seasoned well and it was tasty. I ate the whole thing with cheese and fries on the side. Washed that down with a hefeweizen, which was one of TWO weizens they had! Their draft menu is actually pretty impressive, and I think I chose the right beer for the meal.

Too bad there was no room to even share a dessert. Even the chocolate one looked good.

I'd be willing to come back to this place, if only to try their venison stuffed mushrooms...I'm not too keen on eating Bambi, but I like comparing other peoples' stuffed mushrooms to my own...

A couple of weeks ago, Mrs. Picky and I went on a so-called staycation. So, we decided to check out some restaurants that we had not been to in Ventura. Winchesters was among them. We have since been back for happy hour and dinner once.

The first time we ate there was great. It would have been a 4. The food was very good: I had the Winchester Burger, fries, and a salad. Mrs. Picky had the Elk Burger, fries, and a salad. Both of us really enjoyed our burgers, I liked the fries (but Mrs. Picky thought the fries were to thick), and thought the salad was fresh and nice. The only odd thing was how small the physical size of the plates was-- not the servings, but the actual plate, which meant that your salad and fries kept falling off onto the table. The service was very good and quick.

The second time was for happy hour. I had a gimlet and Mrs. Picky had a martini. Both were pretty bad. I would recommend sticking to the beer if you go here. I had the chicken fingers, which were pretty much deep fried store bought chicken fingers from the frozen section. My wife had the venison stuffed mushrooms, which were actually minced venison that was not great. We both agreed no more happy hour for us. The only up side of this trip was decent service.

The third time we took two friends and the service was terrible. It probably took 10 minutes before anyone even came over to our table, another 10 before someone took our order, and then the food didn't come out quickly and in two cases wasn't quite right. But, we knew better to send it back because (a) when someone might come by to take it back was uncertain; and (b) we were too hungry at that point. The food was fine--I had the same burger, Mrs. Picky had the crab cake sandwich, and our friends had a steak and a veggie burger. But, it was pretty hard to stomach the service. My thought is that we were in the high tables by the bar and the rest of server areas are not near those. So, I recommend refusing to be seated at those high tables if you want to eat before you are starving.

Overall, I would say this place has good menu food (not happy hour food-- beware of that) and spotty service. So, you are taking a chance when you go there, but if you want an elk burger, there is probably not another place to go around here.

3.5 stars.  After shopping, wandering and watching basketball all day, we were starved.  Lori thought this place was recommended by one of the store owners in town so we decided to check it out.

We ate dinner at almost 10pm and the place was still pretty packed with  families and high school looking kids alike.

The food portions were gigantic.  We had the crab salad sandwich, buffalo burger and a combo plate with steak and a pork chop.  So much food.  I think I liked the buffalo burger best but the crab salad was pretty delicious and made with real crab.  We were not able to finish everything.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go here but it was a good spot for a late dinner and a few drinks.

This review is just based on service because we only got a couple of pitchers of beer. Prices are definitely on the high end even for beer. The crowd was kind of loud and annoying. Service was ok but a bit pushy...waitresses kept asking if we wanted food even after we told them we were there just to drink.

Food and booze are pretty good here, but service is mediocre to terrible. Last time I was there with a party of 8, I practically had to seek out my waitress after my beer glass sat empty for much too long. When she came, I asked for another brew. Four other people in my party also ordered something, but get this: each one had to stop her to do so, as she would turn to leave after each order. I mean, is it expecting too much for wait staff to ask if anyone else wants anything? Especially after several people have given orders! For Pete's sake. Sadly, such service is typical of Winchester.

A Western style grill and saloon serving steaks, poultry and seafood specialties. I have only eaten there once during a one hour lunch break from class. Our group was late getting back but since the instructor was with us, we were able to enjoy our meal when it finally arrived. I ordered the Kobe Burger (Japanese beef marinated in sake and massaged gently). That to me just seemed to say love and attention was put into this burger. That will also explain the price ($10+) but definitely worth it. That is the most tender, flavorful hamburger I have ever had. Very worth it. To eat  here, you have to have the time to hang out. Saloon like atmosphere; people at the patio drinking beer. Everytime I had walked by, it has been busy. I've just been put off by the wait for the food. It's a very popular place.

We took some friends here from out if town as not much else was open around 10 p.m. on a Thursday night.

We ended up ordering a few beers (free pint glass night) and some cocktails along with our jalapeno poppers to start the evening off.

Soon after our main meals arrived (crab sandwich, tri rip roast and a buffalo burger). The food was good for what it was.

The crab sandwich and tri tip seemed worth what was paid but the burger was nothing special (small patty with lettuce and tomato) and defiantly not worth $10.00.

This place tends to be more known for it's beer and bar atmosphere (huge selection of beers on tap) rather than it's selection of food and dining experience.

Would defiantly come to again but probably for lunch or a quick drink or two as opposed to dinner with friends from out of town. All in all a great place for a very casual meal and a drink at a good price.

Pretty good food and service I marked down for price. we got the duck strips which were really tasty, crispy, and tender. they are served on a bed of their fries which I thought were some of the best fries I've had. For the entree I got the Kobe burger with some avocado just to try the infamous Kobe beef. It was good but I did not think they it was any better than a very good burger with normal meat. also I think they over cooked it a bit, it was still juicy but it was brown throughout. they also have bison and elk burgers.

I love their chili cheese fries...agh they are so amazing! Their drinks are eh ok...their shots are quite possibly the best on the block. I went here once and asked for a shot I have never had before and that was totally different from anything else...10 minutes later I had a dark colored liquor sitting in front of me...it smelt of vomit and something else really bad...but OH BOY HOWDY you were feeling GOOOOOOOD for the rest of the night! That night ended in a blur, but I do know that was a fun night :)

I love this food. The steak is to die for. A bit of a drive from LA, but over all worth it. The reason for the 3 stars is the service. A bit slow. Also the manager who was there tonight came over to me while using the juke box, and told me I have to choose more "family-friendly" songs ( I was playing Metallica and Black Sabbath). This was odd as these songs were ON THE JUKE BOX! - but the food made it worth the trip!

Went this past Sunday and really enjoyed it.  I'd probably give it 4.5 stars if it was a choice.
I had the "Pick two for Dinner" for $24.  I selected the Tiger Shripm Scampi and Petit Sirloin with the garlic mashed potatoes and it comes with their special baked beans.  It was a very tasty meal.  I loved the beans. The potatoes, shrimp and steak were really fabulous.  It also came with a dinner salad, which was nothing special--just lettuce, cucumber, onion and croutons, but it was very fresh. The dinner rolls were good as well.
They have 37 beers on tap.  The server recommended a strawberry blonde beer. LOVED IT.
Kelly was our server -- wish I could have as terrific a waitress as her every time I dine out.  She was friendly and on top of her service.
My friend ordered the "Pick two for Dinner" but got the grilled chicken and shrimp scampi with the rice pilaf.  He really enjoyed his too.  We would definitely go back.

Was a daily customer when they opened and hung around the restaurant for a few more years until moving on. They had great atmosphere, an interesting menu, lots of beers and cocktails and a mix of tourists, locals and bikers. Fun times.

Close to 40 beers on tap. Food tends toward the greasy side, but the portions are large and the prices are reasonable for what you get. Try the ostrich burger! The bar turns into a bit of a meat market later in the evening.

The steaks in this place are ridiculous!  Huge. Like 50 beers on tap too. Patio to enjoy the night air. Friendly and cute staff. One of my favorite places

Friends and I used to meet here often before others moved into town.  Winchester's has decent beer tap selection and the outdoor patio is nice on sunny days.  However, the food is typical bar menu of burgers and nachos (we don't go there for food anyway).  The really lost all of us on their unfriendly service, manager and wait staff alike.

I always have a good time when I come here. I always down a few beers with my meal so that always helps my mood. Have to enjoy meat at this place and they do it right. Burgers are great as well as some other unique sandwiches. They have a pretty full menu so its easy for people to be pleased.

Since all the other bars have sprung up around Ventura, this place has gone downhill a bit. The crowds aren't really there anymore; however, the drinks are always tasty, strong, and relatively inexpensive. The Stoli Surprise is so good! I have never eaten there, so I can't comment on the food.
