Review from Felicia J.
Boston, MA
I have been going to Winchester Optical for 3 or 4 years now for my glasses and contacts. The staff is very friendly and always willing to go out of their way to help with whatever I need. When I first went, I was having a lot of problems with my contacts at the time, and John Deering was fantastic-- he figured out exactly what was going on, and suggested an alternative brand which has been great for me. The place is family-run and is very welcoming, with a knowledgeable staff. I have recommended them to friends and family, and think very highly of this place.

Did. Not. Like. Them.
Years ago - so maybe this ain't the best "first review" to have - they were horrible.
I got my first contacts through these people. What a disaster. I almost don't want to talk about it.
My eyes are pretty bad. Years ago when "oxygen-permiable" contacts were new - they set me up with some. They sucked. I had to go back continually to get adjustments, new perscriptions. Just horrendous. I'm not THAT blind and they were just clueless.
Maybe it's better now. Technology has made this field idiot-proof. And they certainly have their share of idiots there. -
Review from Sam D.
Arlington, MA
I used Winchester Optical exclusively for more than 23 years and was completely satisfied. Apparently they have changed their policies.
When I bought an expensive set of frames and again when I went in to have them repaired I was assured they were guaranteed and it would not cost me anything to repair them. There was no charge when I went to pick up the repaired frames - but a month later they sent a bill for more than $100. Their answer : they are sorry I misunderstood their policy.
With deep regret : looking for a new optometrist. Really enjoyed doing business with them. In particular, Bob was always helpful. -
Review from Lynda M.
I used to go here for my glasses/contacts for about 10 years. I only had to switch to another practice because I moved back to Boston, and it was hard to get to Winchester. I always found the staff friendly and knowledgeable. They have a great selection of frames, and I always like to support family run businesses. I would recommend their services highly!!!!

Review from James D.
Winchester, MA
I really wanted to like Winchester Optical as I live in the town and like to support local business. However, they just make things too complicated and expensive. Most importantly, they cannot write prescriptions for contacts, so you are forced to buy through them at twice the cost of some other places such as 800-contacts. This isn't the case with the other small, locally owned optical places I've been in Mass. Second, I told them I had been using a certain brand family (Acuvue) for 10 years with no problem yet they really pushed two other kinds that's weren't as comfortable resulting in two additional visits and I finally settled on a less comfortable brand so I didn't have to take time off work again. The doctors are very friendly and knowledgeable, but I would choose a place where they can write prescriptions (basically any other place around).

Our family owned and operated store specializes in finely crafted eyeglasses, contact lens fitting and eye exams.
History
Established in 1958
In 1958, Arthur Deering left an already long career in the optical industry to open his own optical shop in Winchester, MA. His wife Margaret, also an optician, joined him in running their store and setting a standard for some of the finest eyewear in the industry.
In 1981 Arthur and Peg retired leaving their son John to carry on the tradition of well-crafted eyewear. Since then John has not only upheld the standards set by his father, but has built his own contact lens practice. He has become one of the most recognized contact lens fitting opticians in Massachusetts and across the country.
In 2009 the Deering family welcomed its third generation, and first doctor, to Winchester Optical. Joseph Deering graduated from the New England College of Optometry and provides primary and pediatric eye care to patients of all ages. The office is able to provide exceptional eye care, eyeglasses and contact lenses to all of its patients.
Meet the Business Owner: John D.
John Deering is President and owner of Winchester Optical, Inc. John's introduction into opticianry began as a young boy when Arthur Deering would bring home eyeglass frames to be assembled. John began his apprenticeship under Arthur in 1973.

To this day he is still fitting contact lenses and making spectacles while along the way being awarded the Lifetime Achievement award in 1998 and the Optician of the Year award in 2008 by the Optician Association of Massachusetts. John is also a teacher of his craft. Presenting the prestigious Theodore Obrig Lecture for ophthalmology and the Kevin Tuohy Lecture for the CLSA.
