Fantastic food - we yelped some choices in Ashland on our trip through, and settled on this (tiny) wine bar as we had kids with us (8 and 10), liked the look of that menu, and didn't think the kids could put up with the full-fledged restaurant (but also didn't feel we had to go to yet another brewery).
Great choice - the food, wine, and location were amazing. We had an heirloom tomato salad (terrific), the mini-beef wellingtons (yummy), frites with truffle aioli (although my youngest asked for ketchup to go with them - which a waiter happily provided), the antelope burger, green beans in panko - all quite yummy. The wine list was short, but the bar was extensive (although we stuck to wine), and someone had actually tasted all the wines, and they were all fantastic (at least the three we tried).
A couple of complaints - the soup (smoked asparagus) was incredibly over-salted. To the point that the child who constantly salts her food said 'this is much too salty'. It was inedible. The service (we had children, it is true. Children who were quieter than the party next to us - who were boisterous, but well-behaved) was indifferent - no water glass refills, no plate clearing, no 'how was everything?'. Apparently, having decided to reproduce, teaching our children to eat at good restaurants, teaching them to try different foods, to eat in public, this is a sin, one for which we must be punished. Not for any genuine infractions, mind you, just for perceived ones, ie. bringing the kids with us. Don't get me wrong - I hate it when I'm having a lovely, romantic meal, and someone brings their kids to a restaurant where it is totally inappropriate to have them there. This was a wine bar, it was noisy, and our kids were the quietest ones there. So forgive me, but we only left 15% - if you wanted 20%, proprietor, my thought is, don't treat us like pariahs until we behave like them.....
I would happily go back, to stay in the lovely rooms, and eat in the lovely restaurant and wine bar. No, I won't bring my kids. Not because they can't behave, but because this place can't cope with the possibility that they might be able to. Tell me, folks, did your parents keep you at ihops and Denny's until you were 21? How ever did you learn to behave in public?
Winchester is a unique and beautiful spot in Ashland and my family and I had always been curious to try their highly praised brunch. When we finally did a while back, we all left a little underwhelmed. The meal and portions were ok, but the price was a little high. I've definitely had a better breakfast at a local joint.
I shared the Meyer Lemon Waffle with fresh raspberries, lemon curd and pistachio, and a dish of freshly made crepes with sauteed apples and a champagne vanilla bean glaze. My dad got a quiche. The waffles were tasty but the lemon curd was a bit sweet and tasted like it had too much powdered sugar. The crepes were flavorless and the only thing I could taste were the apples and champagne flavor. Definitely unimpressed with that dish. The quiche was decent, but it came in such a small slice that we didn't have enough bites to really determine what we thought of it.
However, the brunch came with a complimentary glass of orange juice and each person got a delicious, freshly made scone w/ nut butter. The scone was buttery and perfect! It was so good that I came back to order some more (they only make scones Sun. and Wed. and they give you 3 for $3.75)
The Winchester Brunch was a good one-time meal, and I would come back for the scones alone. But for breakfast, I think I am going to try Morning Glory and only go back some other time to try the Winchester for dinner...
As restaurants in Ashland go, this is one of the tops. (I can't speak to the hotel part of this business). I've lived here six years, and I don't know why it has taken me so long to get to this place to eat, but last night my lovely bride chose it for our dinner date. There is a quiet restrained ambiance upon entering, not quite formal, but pleasant to the senses. Our table looked over the outside gardens, in a pleasing bay in the main dining area.
As I looked ovet the menu, my head was nodding "yes" to everything. Simple descriptions of luscious food, nothing more. The waitstaff was eager to please, attentive, not overbearing.
And the food lived up to what I was seeing on the menu. We started with a shared appetizer of Panko Crusted Green Beans with three dipping sauces. Think Tempura meets french aioli sauces - one lemon garlic, one berry wasabi, and one I don't remember except that it disappeared first. Perfectly done beans, with just the right amount of crisp on the outside. Yummmmmm.
The ten entree selections all caught my eye. I found myself leaning towards the smoked duck or lamb shank, and the waiter suggested that he favored the duck. Get this: Crispy Smoked Duck Breast with Vodka Tomato Sauce, Goat Cheese Pink Peppercorn Gnocchi, and Cauliflower Puree artistically angled on a square serving platter. The flavors - subtle luscious cauliflower puree, smoky duck and sauce, and the peppercorn gnocchi complemented each other accoumpanied by Eden Vale Tempranillo (I gotta go get a case of that). I think when I first read the menu, I blocked out the "cauliflower puree." I mean, it sounds.... Yuck. But no, it is a superb delicate balance against the acidity of the vodka tomato sauce and the peppercorn gnocchi.
My wife had the Catch of the Day: Macademia Crusted Red Snapper with Arugula Polenta and Lemon Grass Zabaglione accompanied with panko crusted asparagus. She raved about it - creamy polenta, perfect fish, rolling eyes of appreciation.
Alas, we had no desert, but I'll save room next time. Now that I know how good the food is, I'll be back, over and over till I've tried everything on the menu.
The bill including two cocktails, and three glasses of wine came to $98.
BTW, the wine list is extensive, and the restaurant has a Wine Spectator Award which they proudly display. The bar is cushy, subtle live jazzguitar on Friday and Saturday evenings
Note: The approach is not disabled friendly. I'm currently on crutches, second street is at its steepest here, and the walk way is tilting brick street side. I believe there is an elevator off the alley for those who are otherwise challenged. Call ahead.
Serves a solid brunch, with tasty scones. Go visit Andy in the wine bar, talk to him, and enjoy a wine flight. It's worth it.
Fast Feast at the Winchester
First, the down-payment for our Thanksgiving reservation, yes--down-payment, in addition to a confirmation call to see if we were really coming, even though we made a down-payment.
They had 2-hour interval seatings, and rushed us through each and every bite and sip, with the intention of getting a long break between seatings? Or...was the slam-dunk due to the fact that the gratuity was added to everybody's check, even for a party of two, and therefore no service motivation?
The food, you ask? The soup and dessert were outstanding, and the entree, (traditional turkey dinner) was shockingly average, for the price.
It is a beautiful restaurant, and we have enjoyed brunch there, so my rating is just for this experience, and I hope we just caught them on a bad day. I just think people should be treated nicely when they are spending a bit ,and expecting a more refined dining experience.
Probably the best B&B experience we have ever had - we were in the Barbara Howard suite - great room, nice tub, excellent bed - super comfy, and all the extras - and a superb breakfast.
The Winchester Inn is one of the best kept secrets of Ashland. They compete with the Peerless as one of the best places for a gourmet meal, and you can't help but read the menu over and over, debating all the yummy meals they have to offer.
Call ahead for reservations, and they'll do a great job of getting you in and out just in time for an OSF show.
