Wilmington Blue Rocks
2 reviews for Wilmington Blue Rocks
I loved coming here and catching a game during a weeknight. The way Frawley Stadium is set up, there is no bad seats in the house. I would get two of the expensive ($10) seats for the price of one thanks to the deal they have with RecycleBank. We are always able to get right behind the 3rd baseline dugout.
What I really enjoy about minor league baseball is that the guys are playing their hearts out for a sport they really enjoy, not some highly paid athlete who doesn't care. I also enjoy that the club has random things happening between every inning, like some contest with people in the crowd or throwing shirts.
Everytime the Blue Rocks score, they have Mr. Celery come out and dance to music by Blur. Its random and it makes no sense but its awesome.
They give out promotions all the time. I was really sad when I missed the Joe Biden with a baseball hat bobblehead. Here's hoping for next year!!
In my quest to go to as many baseball stadiums in the North East as possible, I cannot believe no one here has reviewed this place yet. My husband, some friends, and I headed up from DC on the Amtrak Train to Wilmington for a Sunday day game. We saw the Wilmington Blue Rocks play the Potomac Nationals. The Nationals won 4-3.
The Blue Rocks play at Frawley Stadium and it is pretty much a typical minor-league 1990 vintage ballpark. The seating areas all have great views of the park. There is not a bad seat in the house. $10.00 will put you in the box seats, which are typical fold-down kinds. For a dollar less, you can sit on the reserved aluminum benches (where we sat, on the third base side). They remind me of the bench seating at Elfstrom Stadium in Geneva, IL (Kane County Cougars). This means, on a hot day, bring a seat cushion or towel if you are sitting here. They also have general admission tickets for $6.00. I-95 is visible in left field and the city skyline in right field. The ballpark is walkable to and from the Amtrak station.
The food here is good, but there seems to be no local specialties. You can get your typical hot dogs, burgers, grilled chicken, etc. here. They have a nice deal though, you can get a different combo each day and save a dollar or so. Beer is fairly reasonable here.
So it was a pleasant afternoon and we saw a good game here. Maybe before the end of the season, I'll have a chance to go to a Potomac Nationals game. Don't forget, minor league baseball season ends on Labor Day, unless your team makes the playoffs. Then my friend Susan wants me to come to Pittsburgh in September to see PNC Park.
