CMI is unquestionably my favorite airport in the world. I can check in online, leave my girlfriend's campus apartment 45 minutes before my flight, get through security, and relax in front of the gate for 10 minutes before boarding. Fantastic.

What's more - the employees there are actually NICE. No, seriously. THEY'RE NICE!!!

This airport is pretty much perfect. If only it wasn't at the mercy of ORD to keep flights on time.

TSA are easy going and don't want any trouble. I've never been searched or patted down. The other employees are friendly and helpful.

The only problem I have with this airport is the ground transportation, or lack there of. If the air bus is running you can take it to campus. It comes once an hour, unless it isn't running that day so plan ahead. Some hotels will pick you up, but there is no general shuttle or Blue Bus.

The taxi situation is awful. Usually one cabby will go into the airport and gather a van-full of people. Everyone pays full price for the ride, regardless of how many people get dropped off before you. If you're last to get off, it could take over an hour. Other taxis know about this van driver and have become so frustrated with him taking all the fares that they no longer go to the airport. If you want your own cab, call as soon as you land. The airport should insist that the cabs line up at the cabstand, like they do everywhere else.  The current practice isn't fair for anyone, and it's really annoying.

Willard Airport is probably one of the smallest airports (if not the smallest airport) I've ever flown in and out of.

    The cons:
    - it's only got one terminal.
    - only three airlines fly there (or is it two?).
    - the only destinations are Chicago, Dallas and Detroit.
    - it's hard to get a taxi... usually you have to call for one.
    - the weather is Illinois weather, which means that it sucks in the winter, and there are many flight cancellations and delays.
    - the flights to and from Chicago are usually late (when they're not canceled), because ORD is so terrible.
    - there's pretty much no food sold in the airport.

That sounds pretty dismal, but small airports also have their advantages:
    - there is never a line to check in or to go through security.
    - boarding is usually extremely efficient.
    - parking is not an issue: there's barely any traffic, and long-term parking is only $5/day and is literally across from the terminal entrance.
    - plenty of car rentals.
    - it's only a 10 minute drive to downtown Champaign.
    - because of all of the above, no need to get to the airport too long before your flight.
On top of that, there is free wireless if you're affiliated with the university (the airport is indeed operated by the university).  3-1/2 stars, considering the small size of the operation.

Some things never change. Usually when it comes to an airport- that's bad. But with Willard, it is refreshing.

I use to fly in and out of CMI all the time to go visit friends in Michigan. Check in was quick. Security was quick. Flights were on time- even early if everyone checked in.

I was pleasantly surprised to return to U of I after four years and see that Willard is still the same. Walk right up and check in bags. No line at security. Flight departs on time.

They added cute little work station desks by the gates, but other than that- everything stayed the same.

For being good to me then and now, I will always love CMI.

The University of Illinois operates the tiniest airport in the history of planes or weather or technology or tiny.

But it's got free wireless, and car rentals. :)

And when I needed to rent a car, I came here.  The budget counter was a nightmare as it was frustrating and ultimately unhelpful, but after a day of delays and frustration, everything was worked out.

When the weather sucks (so, half the year with either baking sun./humidity or snows from antarctica--i'm from california), you can at least count on free wireless, a once an hour bus service to campus, and oh, i guess you could fly out of here to Chicago, Dallas, or Detroit.

    Free wireless.

While parking isn't free, everything else about this airport makes flying pleasurable (or at least tolerable): short queues, friendly personnel, and free wifi. Unlike at major airports, you need not arrive insanely early for your flights out of CMI, regardless of where your final destination is. (An hour should be sufficient.)

This one of the nicest small airports I have been too.  It is close to everything, bags come off quickly, short security lines and free wi-fi....

No lines and who needs an executive lounge when you have free WiFi and the whole terminal to yourself.
