5 reviews for Will Geer's Theatricum Botanicum
I heart this place. I came here to see Julius Caesar (thanks goldstar for half price tickets) and just fell in love with this beautiful, outdoor theater up in Topanga Canyon.
Some of the acting was great, some eh...not so much, but it doesn't really matter - it is still a unique & fun thing to do on a weekend.
Don't forget to bring something warm for night shows and to bring a cushion to sit on (wooden benches).

I'm surprised more people have yet to review TB! C'mon LA Yelpers- where you at??? This place is the gem of the Canyon. It's history dates back to the 70s when the actor, activist and folk singer, Will Geer, purchased this property and the community of creativity grew and grew. And now, it is a well respected, reviewed and attended theater company and acting school.
I had the pleasure of performing on this stage in high school. In fact, this was the first stage I ever performed on and I've been hooked ever since. Yes, it's that magical. It's nestled in the canyon and actually has a main stage, which is backdropped by the canyon itself, and a second, smaller stage for non main-stage shows and extra rehearsal space.
They have an incredible High School Intensive Shakespeare Seminar summer camp, which I enjoyed three years in a row. They also have a winter writing session, which I did one year. In fact, they have tons of classes for kids, teens and adults with some of the most nurturing and inspiring people.
The shows that they put on are usually classics- two Shakespeare and two from another well-known playwright. You usually see many of the same faces perform in these shows year after year, as Theatricum is more than their place of work, but also their home. These people are immersed in the theater and the canyon, which really adds to the whole authenticity of the company.
The experience of seeing a show here is also magical. You can come early, grab a bite at the Hamlet Hut, bring some pillows and blankets and make yourself comfy on the wood seats and watch live theater under the stars!

Outdoor theater doesn't get a whole lot better than this.
The actors really work it here, and in a good way. You feel the passion palpitating from the stage. They're equally fervent and fun (but not in a desperate way) when entertaining children in one of their weekend mid-morning productions. There are terrific kids concerts offered, as well.
Come. You'll remember that under-the-stars performance of As You Like It long after you've forgotten that tired Neil LaBute play you spent three times as much to see at the Geffen

I saw a KCRW sponsored show here a couple of years ago and it was utterly fantastic. The outdoor setting is quite beautiful. They're performing a few Shakespeare plays through the summer. it's absolutely worth the trip up there. You won't regret it!

Beg, borrow or steal if you have to, but be sure to see one performance at the Theatricum Botanicum. It is fabulous and unique.
