I love the man who owns/is always at this store. He has the largest, whitest beard ever. He can chat you up about the weather, take your key, make a copy, give you your key x 2 back and finish the transaction in less than two minutes.
He is helping me eradicate the horrible, and obviously traumatic, memories of the past when I would go to a lesser hardware store to get a key copied; those trips began with some snot-nosed kid and ended with me leaving in a huff after 10 long minutes.
this place is definitely my first stop for anything that i need to fix something around my old crumbling south philly row house! it reminds me of this place that my grandpa used to take my brother and me where he would talk for hours with the proprietor and we would wander around in astonishment. it's pretty jam packed with stuff you would need, and like zeke said, you can find some pretty random stuff that's been there a long time... plus the two guys remind me of the car talk guys when they both have a different solution to my problem!!! plus this place smells like heaven, a little bit like an old barn and a little bit like and old garage (where they serviced model T's) i love coming here, and will probably have to make a "wilensky's run" before the week is over to finally cross off some things on my "to fix" list..

The best place in the city for keys (they are always perfectly made). The people are friendly and knowledgeable and the selection is good. I kind of miss good hardware stores. This one is one of the last around here.
i dont know how long wilenskys has been here but it looks like forever, its like the country hardware store your "pa" would go to and i love it. the floors here are older than most of our houses and sometimes while looking through the shelves you'll find a tool dating back to the 70's.
until recently the owner or father of the owner worked here very regularly and despite my offers and his age (90 i heard today) he would climb to get the spray paints i wanted. there are old wooden bins filled with nails and a whole case of knives for only $4.99, wow!
i wont lie, they dont have everything you can get at home depot, but they have alot of what you never get at home depot. the two guys who work here now ( barry and jack i beleive) are friendly and honest, and have really good advice most of the time. they make keys and do it cheap. if you live in south philly, anywhere in south philly, you deserve wilenskys and they deserve you.
