quite possibly the greatest childrens book store ever.  full stop.

if there were a version of this for grown ups there would be a nonstop sucking sound coming from my wallet.

perhaps I should be grateful that there isn't.

I loved this shop as a young adult and love it ever more as an adult. The wonder, amazement and fun that Wild Rumpus' aura brings to books and to the reading experience is truly magical.

The staff is educated and speaks fluent kid speak. Their events are outstanding and I only wish that I still lived in the neighborhood and could frequent this spot more often.

This bookstore is a delight. I am a therapist from North Dakota and am always looking for books for children on emotions. I loved the atmosphere and my grandchildren beg to go there. I was at the store the day they were reading a book to the children. What a fun and exciting place to visit. When I am in the area visiting family I will defiantly go back to this fun bookstore.

A gang of tailless cats? Check. A fat uromastyx sleeping in a tank on the counter? Check. A chinchilla named Mr. Skeeter? Duh.

I said to my friend on the way there, "Oh, they have animals? Well, THEY BETTER HAVE A CHICKEN OR I'M OUT."

Uh...check.

Sure they mainly have kids books, but they also have a handful of adult books that are appropriate for teens. I worked at B&N for a super long time and never once had half the fun that the employees seemed to be having at Wild Rumpus. I mean, I actually heard one guy tell another employee that they didn't have to spend time behind the counter and that they should go read instead. It sounds like a good thing to encourage your employees to do on their downtime, but it would get you a butt whoopin' in a bigger chain store.

Also, that same guy didn't make fun of me when I pointed at the chicken and said out loud (to absolutely no one) "HEY! It looks like a reverse tiger!" In fact, he agreed and said it was a great observation.

This bookstore has chickens!!!

Wild Rumpus is such a fun place to visit, and I stop by every time I'm in Linden Hills.  I love seeing all the animals happily hanging out in the store.  They have a nice selection of children's books and the staff are very helpful.  I have taken my nieces a couple of times and they were in little girl heaven.  What kid wouldn't love such an imaginative, friendly and creative place?  The kid-sized door is a sweet little touch.

Oh, and did I mention that this bookstore has chickens?!?

Cats, chickens, tarantulas, an African lizard, and who knows what else is chilling in the coolest bookstore EVER. And, yeah, it's a children's bookstore, but I dare you to enter and not wish you were little again or not get swept away in thinking that you can fit through the little purple door as you leave.

You can spend a ton of time browsing through the racks upon racks of books...but they could be a little stronger in the foreign language section (but at least they have them!) Bring you kids for the reading groups and story hour (sorry, I don't know the details of these, but do call). Hanging out here is an exciting, fun, and educational way to spend some time with your kids. They're sure to be excited about books after leaving here!

Wild Rumpus is exactly what a children's bookstore should be. Plenty of books, nooks and crannies to sit and read, resident birds, lizards, ferrets, rats, a roaming cat, and a cool bathroom to boot!

In addition to new books, they boast a great "recycled" section as well as a plentiful foreign language section - my husband can finally read a story written in french to our peanut.

Now, if I could convince them to open up shop in SF...

This is the best kids bookstore I've ever seen.  Where else do you have pet rats running in plexiglass covered joists?  Great mix of kids/parenting books/music.  Many places to sit, hide from parents, hang out for hours.  Animals walk around in there (at least a cat and  I've seen a chicken.)  Forget the chains, this is the epitome of a great independent bookseller.
