Determined to see more of Northern California than just San Francisco (not that San Francisco does not rock the world), Mr H and I asked someone the way to San Jose, booked us a plane ride there, and headed south.
We booked a room the Wild Palms Hotel, just outside San Jose. This turned out to be good choice as it is close to both Highway 101 and I-280, making our day trippin' easy.
The hotel is brightly-colored and very cheerful. Our room, towards the back, was not huge, but spacious enough for our needs, comfortable and quiet.
An extended continental breakfast buffet was quite satisfying, with more than enough substantial food (bagels, peanut butter, cottage cheese, cold cuts, fruit) to get us going on our day. Only complaint here is it would have been nice to have it mixed up a bit. We stayed here five nights and by the third morning, the same old thing seemed pretty old.
The complimentary happy hour in the afternoon satisfied my wine-drinking needs and that, well, made me happy.
The pool area was very comfortable. We sat in the hot tub a couple of evenings. I never would have imagined I'd have an 80º+ day, in October, to actually sit by the pool and enjoy the sun. But, I did. (Ok, I guess I can't really give the hotel credit for that. But it sure was nice.)
The staff here were very friendly and accommodating. Overall, our stay here was very satisfying. Were I to find myself back in the area, I would definitely stay here again.
joie de vivre
if only I spoke the language of love.... with a french accent that is then perhaps I'd know what that first line said. yeah, whatever the hell that means. the hotel isnt so bad considering i remember the not so cool place that it used to be - still has so skeevy metal gates. however girls, I'll tell you this much that bed felt soo good. almost reminded me of the four post bed i used to have when I was a lil girl. though I wish I had the chance to also hit the pool and spa regardless of the ho-hum weather.
I'll see you soon again the next time I come out this way.

My friend was in town for business we went out on the company's tab. We partied with some kickball league and endured horrible conversations with Sunnyvale's shadiest bar characters. The cougars would not leave me alone. At the end of the night, I passed reeking of Jack Daniel's and Sunnyvale's floozies.
Yuck.
2 stars for the room.
Plus 1 star for the name.
It always makes me giggle.

Stayed here for 3 nights while traveling on business. While it's charming with cute furnishings, a nice work desk, and an upgraded sink in the bathroom, even with free wi-fi and breakfast, I won't be coming back here.
This hotel is LOUD, made worse by the fact that my room was right off the lobby. The walls are extremely thin - I could hear conversations, music, and even the guy next door peeing. I was woken up in the middle of the night by people talking outside at 4 am (and I'm a very sound sleeper!). It was awful.
While the bathroom was nice, the amenities were cheap and not replenished once during my stay. Wes H. is right - the TV is a 19 inch, very old Zenith model. The breakfast was really mediocre and hardly worth the crowded dining area, but it was nice that parking is free and plentiful. It's in a convenient location, but for the same price, you can stay at the Maple Tree Inn and have better breakfast, more spacious rooms, and with better insulation.
Aloha, Wild Palms...you won't be seeing me again.

For 60$ a night this place is awsome. The only thing I don't like is the slow wifi.

I reserved a block of rooms at the Wild Palms for my wedding. All of my guests really enjoyed the hotel, the rooms are beautiful, the pool area is awesome, and breakfast is tasty. They gave us a good deal for a block of rooms, but even at their normal prices, the Wild Palms is a good deal for the money. So much nicer than staying at a drab chain hotel, this place makes you feel like you're someplace tropical, rather than boring Sunnyvale.
My only complaint is that there was some confusion between the Sales Manager and the main reservations office, so everyone in my group ended up having to call and speak to the sales manager directly to book their room. It all got straightened out in the end.
This is an odd, hidden location for a motel. It is a mere .5 stars up from the Holiday and Comfort Inn's. This is not a bad thing. A 3.5 star rating is what it is.
You get a clean standard room with maybe 150 thread count sheets, with a little stereo and a 27 inch t.v. with cable. There is also a clean pool and jacuzzi for you to enjoy if you wish.
The ".5" additional star rating from just a 3 stars comes from their attempts at decor, complimentary continental breakfast, and hospitality. The decor is a tropical setting off of Wolfe Road.
All in all I'd say, I would stay here over Holiday Inn if these were my options.

I booked a room here a while back and stayed with my husband. It was a surprise for him.
Although I'm a native of Sunnyvale, I never knew what was going on with the Wild Palms until I consulted Yelp. I booked a room and we were not disappointed. The room wasn't large, but everything was very thoughtfully decorated and there was a tube TV which reminded me of the good old days!
I have to say that for Sunnyvale, this property is unique. I think that's why I was so pleasantly surprised to find it. Free breakfast, pool, jacuzzi, responsive, professional staff, robes, what more do you need?

$56 on priceline!
Free breakfast of eggs, coffee, bagels, toast, fruit, oatmeal, and sausages pretty decent. Canopy over bed is neato. Quality toiletries (Bergamont and Lime, smells good!), comfy bed, robes in room, and boutique hotel. But... old timey tube tv.

I work in San José ca, so I need to booked hotels and I choose this one because of the pictures they post in http://hotels.com, it looked clean, for my surprise my husband really like it, the sheets and bed smell clean and very comfortable the bathroom clean and for the price I pay for it was worth it I have pay more in others hotels I really recommend wild palms Sunnyvale 6/21/09
I searched for hotels near me on yelp and this came up with high reviews! I love Joie de Vivre hotels and this was no exception. It was nicely decorated from the canopy beds to the vessel basin sink. One upgrade for such a nice hotel might be the TV, very old and small... Seems out of place for the interior. Great hotel for the PRICE!
this hotel location is totally random .. like you've driven by it before but never really thought about staying here ... then you do and you think to yourself "this is not bad at all, and what a great deal!"
the beds have a cute canopy, kind of small considering how large the bed is. its reallly comfortable bed .. lots of badding, pillows, and blankets.
overall the hotel is really clean and nice

Outstanding Hotel!! When you walk in the front lobby, there is No Door.... hmmmmm, it's as if you've just been transported to the Carribean!! Palms line the lobby and there is a wall-sconce with tealights candles burning, just to set the ambience.... After checking in with the very friendly and courteous staff, you find yourself wandering the open air hallways with cute art murals on the yellow/orange walls... one hall leads to another but no doors. A bit chilly, yes, but this is a different experience --- just suck it up and enjoy the ambience!!
The central courtyard with pool has poolside cabanas and tarps that looks like a scene from "fantasy island" tv show. The comforts just beckons one to enjoy the sunshine, soak in the hot tub, rest in your chaise lounge chair, read a book, and schmooze. You can do a workout in their decently-appointed work-out room. There's a cafe with a bar which serves free breakfast in the morning, with a variety of goodies. Conference rooms are available, with Wi-Fi internet connections. Also, there are 4 "suite-style rooms" with full kitchens / living room area available for those who want to splurge and have a vacation. (Ideal for bride/groom, celebrities, etc)
All rooms have interior designed decor. The design is clean and just like a picture out of a home and garden magazine!!! The walls are painted a pleasant mahogany color, windows covered with wooden shutters, and the heavenly bed covered with goose down comforters and overhanging ascots. WOW!!!! In room TV, spa-style bathrooms, internet, movies, video games, music boombox -- all provide whatever entertainment needs you may have. The bathroom is cozy and the products are top-notch quality stuff. Freshly laundered white towels and washcloths are available with a no-fog makeup mirror (that's an interesting touch!) Even so, there's a cozy bathrobe hanging in the large closet waiting for you to step into and just cozy yourself up and live a little! (Joi D'Vivre!)
Smoking is NOT allowed on campus, and its a policy. I checked in one time, and upon entrance to the room, it smeeeeeellllled like smoke (you non-smokers know what I'm talking about). Ugh - yuck!!! I reported it to the front office and the staff instantly moved me to another room. Soon, I heard a terrific noise.... I was like, "what is that?" Maintenance crews were already in the room and literally had soaped the carpet, and cleaned the carpet, took down the ascots, drapes, sheets, etc. to be washed. Great service!

Cute hotel with some nice perks
- free breakfast (pancakes, eggs, bacon, toast, cereal etc). definitely way better than those continental breakfasts at other hotels that give you lousy pastries instead of hot food.
- comfortable rooms with a clean/nice bathroom, good water pressure in the shower and conditioner (you know a hotel is cheap when you don't get conditioner).
- they had a nice pool area (a bit small) but the design and surrounding lawn chairs were a good setup
- overall the staff was very pleasant and helpful.
for the price and comfort level, this is definitely a good hotel in the area
I've stayed here twice, both times paid for by Google and both experiences vastly different. When I stayed here in summer 2008, I couldn't have said enough wonderful things about the hotel. The room was unique and pretty, the staff was helpful, the open spaces great for hanging out. I would have given it a 5-star review for sure, and I was looking forward to coming back now (summer 2009). However, this time around I didn't have nearly as pleasant an experience. First, the A/C worked abysmally, turning on and off at weird times, when it decided to come on at all. It had to be continually unplugged and then plugged in again to work. Twice I called someone to fix it and twice they purported to fix it, only to break again within a few minutes. The first morning I woke up and of course, wanted coffee. When I went to fill the carafe with water in the sink, I saw, to my HORROR, that the coffee pot was filled with about 3 inches of semi-liquid mold. This pot had not been cleaned out in a very, very long time. I was totally grossed out and had to dump the black, moldy mess which then made the sink into a moldy mess. When we pointed out the moldy coffee left in the pot, we got no apology, and a big hassle trying to get a new coffeemaker. They finally replaced the pot and not the whole maker, and refused to move us to a different room despite my husband's asthma (and my allergies) being really affected by the crapload of mold that had apparently been festering in the room. So, this time the Wild Palms deserved a one-star review, but I split the difference and gave them a generous 3-stars. Bottom line, the hotel is cute, but the cleaning staff doesn't care to clean the rooms to basic sanitary levels. Too bad.
This is a great bargain. The interior is nice, the service is amazing, and the pool + decent free breakfast are great plusses.
My experience:
I booked my stay directly with the hotel. The reservationist said they were out of 2 queen bed-rooms, however she would put in that we needed a rollaway (I stayed here with my sister). When we arrived we were told that the rollaways were all being used, but that he (the front desk agent; I think he was a manager of some sort) would personally go to another hotel and get us a rollaway. We went up to our room, and I went to get on the (free) WiFi. The WiFi wasn't working, and I called down to the front desk. They patched me through to tech support, who solved my issue and got me online. There were also computers and printers available for (free) use downstairs in the business center.
I called the front desk to let them know that if a double room canceled we would prefer that to a rollaway, if one should become available. The front desk guy told me that the hotel that was going to provide my rollaway had basically reniged their offer and that he was going to give us a second room, next door to our existing room, for free! How nice, and unheard of at "corporate" style hotels.
The interior of the hotel is great, there are striped awnings all over the place, and bright, medeterranean colors. The pool is nice-sized, and there is a hot tub. There are a couple of tented cabanas around the pool. In the (immaculate) room there was a comfortable king bed with a canopy overhead, nice furnishings, a TV and CD player. The towels and linens were soft and of high quality. My only "problems" (really they were very minor) with the room was the old shower head and the old TV. Both were functional, just not up-to-date with the rest of the room.
For $75 I had an amazing experience and will return to Wild Palms whenever I am in the area.
This has got to be the worst Joie de Vivre hotel (in terms of looks), but for the rates they are offering, it actually isn't that bad! Also, it is quite obvious that the Wild Palms building was heavily re-modeled in order to open up as a JDV hotel.
I like the Mediterranean theme, especially the canopied beds. I am unsure whether or not breakfast is served in the morning and I didn't get the chance to hang out at the poolside cabana :( Next time :)
The front desk girl (Erika) is a total sweetheart because she gave my BF a cheaper rate for the 3rd night, even though it was supposed to be twice as expensive.

Consider this a 3.5 star review, and it would have been a four if we did not have the experience we had. The room was modern, with a flat screen TV and clean sheets. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was roomy and well above average. Our problems were as follows--There was a trash can that still had trash in it when we checked in the room. Not too bad, but it gets worse. The air conditioner just did not work. They came twice to remedy the issue and basically told us we did not know how to operate the unit. I am not Stephen Hawking, but I know how to work a freaking air conditioner. The air conditioner did not work properly and we were suspicious it had an energy cap. Our room was between 78-80 degrees all weekend as a result. Our worst surprise, though, was when we tried to make coffee. I will not post the picture of what was in the coffee pot, because I know some of you are on here hungry, and looking for a place to eat. Let me just say that it was about two inches deep in mold. I know it sounds bad, but I couldn't knock the place too much. I think we just had plain old bad luck. Hopefully other people will get a working air conditioner though.
Nice hotel for Silicon Valley. It's tucked away a bit off of E. El Camino. Rooms come with a nice canopy bed, a desk, and free wi-fi. The outdoor pool and hot tub look nice (i came during a cold spell). Free continental breakfast which includes bagels, eggo waffles, muffins, cinnamon rolls, english muffins, fresh fruit, yogurt, cereal, and juice. They have a free happy hour from 6-7 PM which is also the only time the bar is open! The guests are the same people you'd expect to see at any other hotel in this area. The price was affordable enough.
So five stars for the hotel. Three stars for the crowd/bar hours. Averages to four.

Awesome place. I'm at Wild Palms right now while writing this as a matter of fact. It's got a cool sunny Mediterranean vibe to it and the rates are incredibly low for what you get. Sure the parking lot and the view of the hotel from the parking lot may make you think 2x, but once you're in the hall, at the pool or in your room you might think you're somewhere else entirely...surely you'd never think you were a Coke bottle's throw away from El Camino Real.
And here's where they really get things right--they don't jew ya for everything. Bottle of water, sir? Sure. Free happy hour from 6-7? Fuck yes. Free WiFi? Ditto! Oh and you want breakfast, too....that will cost you ZERO dollars you son-of-a-bitch. Enjoy your stay monsieur.
Add to that a very nice stereo, a beautiful canopy bed, frigid AC, a stylish bathroom and a great desk to work from and I think I'd stay here for fun even if I lived in the area--oh, wait--I do! I live just up the street. It's a mini vacation for me on a Thursday night. That's right you cheese eating buttmonkey. I live about 3 miles away and have moved into the Wild Palms for the night for no other reason than the fact that I can. Muhuhuhaahaaa..

I liked the ambience here, and the room was nicely appointed without going over the top. The staff was very helpful, and unlike many hotels, where the common spaces are pretty uncool, I thought the bar, pool, and the courtyard were all good places to hang out.
I have to knock a star off for the too-soft bed and the bedside cookies that would cost $$$ if I were to actually eat them. The latter - bottled water and cookies out in the open with a price tag - are antithetical to the feeling of hospitality that I want from my room. Hoteliers - put it in the minibar if you want money for it.

Several reviews below list very cheap rates, but they don't at all resemble the ACTUAL rates charged here... I was looking for
a 2- to 4-night stay, booking over a week in advance... and was
quoted **$149** per night AFTER AAA and other discounts!
Since I opted for elsewhere (I ended up staying at Mariani's in Santa Clara, where I had stayed before, for half the price), I can't say whether these rooms are "worth" the rate... just be clear that the $50-60 rates mentioned in reviews below, according to the manager, NEVER actually existed at any time as Wild Palms (since the JdV takeover).

Great hotel, great rates with a tropical feel. If you are looking for something elegant and lavish, not quite the place. But if you are looking for a something different, with comfortable rooms, and themed decorations, this is a nice place. Only way to some it up is it almost feels like you could be on vacation in mexico, or a tropical island. Would definitely come back.

When I first saw the outside of this hotel, I didn't think much of it, but as soon as I went in the lobby, I was quite excited. Perhaps by the free starburst candy and lemonade at the front desk? Perhaps by the clean hot tub and pool (complete with floaties)? Or was it the huge canopy bed I got?
I spent a large amount of time staring at the pores on my nose in the magnifying mirror in the bathroom. And wildly dancing naked in front of all the mirrors in my room.

Cool hotel and nice rooms. Strange location, though. Great prices and a really nice free breakfast in the a.m.
whenever my closest friends came over the San Jose area, they've stayed 'Wild Palms Hotel'.. cuz the company provided for them.. ha!
whenever they stayed the hotel, I've visited them for happy hour (6~7pm) - free drinks, the pool & jacuzzi, especially sunny weather... sheeeeh! it's secret... ^^
even though I didn't stay with my friends, some of the staffs knew us and always were friendly.. the room's always clean and fresh.. and comes with some fancy Aveda stuffs also..
if I have to choose the place to stay while in silicon valley, I would stay HERE!

The place good, but I don't get the hype of what everyone was talking about. Maybe I was expecting a little more because is a Joie de Vivre Boutique Hotel. To me, it could be comparable to that of a nice Holiday Inn or a Ramada. Overall it was good. Plenty of parking. Accessible to San Jose, freeways, all kinds of ethnic foods, and in a good location...close to where I needed to be. Free internet is a plus. The included breakfast was excellent considering the selection of coffees, teas, warm and cold breakfast foods. I liked the big nice comfy beds, with superior sheet thread count and the fantastic comforter. I had an excellent sleep. I guess the best part was how much it costed. It was approximately about $70 - 120 a night. So I think we got our money's worth. Sure beats crashing on a relative's couch in Sunnyvale!
It's exterior belies the beauty and charm within the walls of this tucked away hotel. I went there for a retreat and it was the perfect spot. The meeting room was spacious, clean, comfy and outfitted with plenty of outlets for laptops. The staff members are so friendly and helpful. The rooms are quite colorful. Most beds have canopies and the bathroom sinks are a delightful combination of art and function. The amenities really add to the experience. Exquisite herbal shampoos, conditioners and lotions; a true continental breakfast and even free pink lemonade in the lobby (absolutely refreshing after a moonlight dip in the hottub!). They also have so many other things in stock that if you're a forgetful traveller, you're in good hands.

I was pleasantly surprised by this hotel. Comfy beds, free wi-fi (convenient for the Saturday night that I got to spend working, ugh), plenty of parking, and quite an extensive free breakfast (of which I was not able to partake, but it was quite a spread). Only gripes -- water pressure could have been a bit better AND the Aveda products appear to be on hiatus. But I paid $72 for the night, and overall I'd say it was a great deal.

My husband and I stayed an entire weekend here in August of 06 and we were pleasantly surprised by the pricing! We spent less than 120 for 3days and 2 nights! (The prices are probably different now, we reserved a room on their website)The room was nice and roomy, the bed was comfy, they have free wi-fi and happy hour! The outside of the hotel might discourage you a little, but once you're inside its totally different. I agree with "Nobody M's" review about the vibe and ambiance of this place. When we get another chance, me and my husband are going to schedule another little get away at this hotel for sure.

My boyfriend and I loved it. It was close to all the freeways and a lot of places to eat. The rooms were clean and the concept was cute. The room wasn't beautiful or anything, but I think the reason they are successful is because of their cleanliness and service. The bathroom was cute and they provided Aveda products. Let me tell you, I am a huge Aveda fan so it's very cool to find this. The day we went was hot, so lounging and playing in the pool was great fun. The gym was just simply a room with a bench, weights, and a treadmill. terrible... we would definitely come back here though, especially for the free wi-fi! lol

Decent price, clean and an overall good experience!
One of a handful of JDV properties here in the South Bay, the WIld Palms has a Mediterannean, tropical, sunny vibe without being tacky. Open air lobbies with rattan furnishing and poolside cabanas are par for the course here. I love the brightly painted exterior in red and yellow. While I haven't stayed here, my coworkers stayed here for a company meeting and were very satisfied; the staff was also very accommodating.
I haven't actually stayed there, but I did an environmental site audit for my job. The rooms were great, and apparently thy only cost like $60-$70 per night! The rooms aren't like an ordinary best-western or equivilent, they are quite nice, with neat beds (some with netting!) and big basin sinks. Seemed like a really great place to stay.
excellent!!
My husband and I stayed here because his work associate enthusiastically recommended it. We cannot imagine why, except that the rooms are pretty and updated in design. Functionality for two people is totally absent. Needs table for two, not just a single desk. Couldn't get online in the morning without telephone assistance from local teckie. Breakfast eggs tasted powdered and the bacon was extremely greasy. The NOISY air conditioner alternated between freezing us and throwing off the covers sweatiness. We heard peoples' voices and running sounds from three directions the entire time we were there - upstairs, the hallway, and the pool area which our room faced. Our blinds didn't close completely, which meant our level of privacy was low. My husband felt that the pillows were too thick. Also, there were dirty breakfast dishes piled on a chair near the pool at 9pm. Opening bathroom door moves bath matt aside. And the heavily advertised Aveeno products were NOT in the bathroom.
I stayed here for a week when my company relocated me from San Diego. I chose the hotel based on its central location, because it was affordable and also promised WiFi. Now, I was really counting on the internet to work because I needed to do aparment searches and so on. I was forced to switch to 3 different rooms coz the first two rooms were too far away from the access points. Hell! Didn't they know that before they assigned me to those rooms. The connection in the third room was spotty too but by then I was too tired to care or go back for another room. The girl at the front desk had zero customer skills and acted like she was doing me a favor. I had to lug two big suitcases with me everytime I switched rooms. And to top it, this was from the ground level to the second level. They did not offer to help move the luggage nor was there any sort of apology. I have had better service at Holiday Inns and Quality Inns in the South Bay. I misplaced a room key during the stay and went to the front desk for another key. The same girl from before was at the desk and had a scowl on her face as she programmed another key. Seriously, is that such a difficult task? On a positive note, the breakfast was quite good and there was plenty of parking. Also the other women at the front desk were quite friendly.
Definitely a bad experience but I have learnt my lesson and will stick to the standard chain hotels. They may not be chic but they are dependable.
Although reminders of city life surround this quaint hotel once you go inside it's like you're in a different dimension. Seriously! It is the best bang for your buck. My boyfriend and I decided to go on a mini getaway and after much raved reviews and we found this place. It was around $50 a night and it came with a pool and jacuzzi. Much better than the Comfort Inns and Motel 6's that are pool-less and for the same price. The decor gives off a tropical feel to the place. The room was quite comfy. Big bed with a canopy, which brings a very nice touch. The downsides are that the tv could've been bigger. The fridge wasn't cold enough to house the sashimi we wanted to eat. The nicer perks are the FREE wireless internet throughout the hotel, and free internet in the lobby also their complimentary breakfast. My boyfriend and I woke up earlier than usual just for that, it consists of cereal, bagels, toast, and juices. Overall, it's the best hotel deal you'll find in the san jose area guaranteed. And it's just 5 min. drive from the famous Winchester Mystery House.
We recently had a wedding in Northern California and got a block rate to host many of our out-of-town guests at the Wild Palms Hotel. Our guests were very happy with the neat tropical atmosphere and the high quality of the rooms -- in particular the plush "expensive hotel" bedding. Many of our guests were saying that the would pay $300 for rooms this nice in other cities they've been to. The pool was a popular hangout spot for dinner or games of cards and the staff was great. Thank you Wild Palms!
