Wife and I stayed here twice over the last 4yrs.  Very relaxing and well kept facility.  We enjoyed the springs and the lodging, even though it is a little rustic.  The community kitchen worked well, and on our second visit we were prepared with the correct food for the weekend, not so on our first visit.

We really enjoyed the long hiking that the preserve provides, we were hiking/walking for hours and hours, very nice.  Plus there's a small and remote soaking tub on the hiking trail just past the parking lot next to an old homestead, not an official clothes free tub, but with no others around it worked pretty well.

This review is for anyone new to visiting Hot Springs and esp. Clothing Optional Places

I have been to this place only twice and I will definitely go back. I think it's a great place to meditate, get clear, and it's romantic and a great place to take your significant other. It's a very intimate experience I would not go with people I don't know well because then it's just a tad odd.

Word to the wise; when they say clothing optional, what they really mean is everyone will stare at you like your a freak if you wear a bathing suit (which I did!) The first time I felt like I entered a weird hippy commune cult place, but I still thought it was cool. There was some peer pressure to just "get naked, be free, let your spirit soar and stuff', and that was annoying and made me really not want to do it and I didn't. I mean after all if you say clothing is optional, I should have the freaking option to leave my damn clothes on!

My second visit; there were other Latinos and Asian American women with bathing suits on and no one seemed to care, so I guess it just depends on when you go.

Attention White Folks: Hispanic and Asian American women are not encouraged to be naked in front of others we are raised to be more private not because of religion because of our culture and I don't know why dang-it!! Well I do but let's not open up that can of worms. I obviously know there are exceptions, my two friends I was with are Mexican American went naked as the wind and totally comfortable.  But, why do you think it's usually white women and men at the gym walking around in their birthday suits. Not that anything is wrong with it but you might want to be a little more understanding and back off let us do what we want in our own time. The second time I did go topless..it was weird but also kinda cool.

Anyways, I love the smell of the Sulphur but my husband spent the first 30 minutes gagging because it was disgusting to him, but then once he got used to it he loved it. The communal kitchen and eating areas are spacious and friendly feeling, and the kitchen is stocked with everything under the sun that you would need except food- so make sure to bring everything you will need including spices.

    Wilbur,
I love you.....but alas I can no longer enjoy you as you have become increasingly more expensive over recent years. Was it the wedding feature on http://martastewart.com that made you decide to raise your rates? Was it all the great yelp reviews? Either way I just don't get it...well, I guess I DO...:(

At $215 a night my quiet little happy hippy escape has turned into a runaway for the bay area's "hippy elite." With the current state of our economy, who else can afford just under FIVE HUNDRED BUCKS for a weekend get away?

I sure will (do) miss you...

I absolutely LOVE Wilbur!!!  The waters help with my body pain.  I recently fell and twisted my ankle and soaked for a day in the waters helped greatly with swelling and bruising and pain.  I am hooked on this place for recovery and relaxation!

I love Wilbur more than any other hot springs in the world. It is tranquil, it is idyllic and their tagline - in all the world no waters like these - is 100% true.

However, as a regular Wilburite for going on 25 years, there are two things I wish the management would change.

One is the group room. it has a bathroom IN IT. A toilet even. That is open (in sound) to 11 people sleeping in beds. I have always been surprised that this is legal; it is certainly not appealing and for $100 a night, one expects better...an ENCLOSED bathroom including sink and toilets with a WALL between them and the beds.

My second complaint is that for the second time, I have woken to couples in the group room deciding that group space is their private space. It happened to me last year with some lesbians. It happened to me Sat. night with a new (?) couple roughly 40. Please, Wilbur, work harder to make coupled people staying in the library aware of the restrictions and be thoughtful to other guests. The worst aspect of my experience is that I actually went down to the front desk to ask the front desk person to take care of the coupling couple and speak to them. She said she would, and then I went back to my bed and waited another ten minutes when no one arrived. With 6 other women in the room looking and feeling extremely awkward, I finally took it upon myself to speak to the couple and tell them how inappropriate their behavior was. I am disappointed the hotel staff did not pay closer attention. Later they did speak to the couple, but not at the crucial time when they said they would.

Wilbur is still a beautiful place and I will still go at the drop of a hat. I just would like to see management respond, particularly to the group room bathroom situation. It is simply gross to think people will pay $100 to listen to other people go to the bathroom any time.

Every year Wilbur closes for two weeks to remodel and every year I wonder if the bathroom situation will be addressed but it has not. Please remodel the bathroom!

The first word that came to mind as I stepped out of the car at Wilbur was "serenity". There is a   peace and quiet,an energy that settles over you almost instantly - it truly is an amazing "sanctuary for the self".

I spent a lot of time researching hot springs in California and Wilbur struck a chord with us as a place where we could get off the grid, reconnect and truly unwind. Our only regret now is that we didn't spend longer here.

Some practical advice - Wilbur is a place you truly share with others and not just in the physical sense in spaces like the kitchen, bathrooms, showers, and communal lounges.   You share it in a spiritual sense and it requires you to contribute  peace, goodwill and a smile. If you are looking for a five star, off the grid escape, this probably isn't the place for you. It's rustic and rough around the edges, but that is a part of the charm.

Rather that reiterate what a lot of other reviews have already covered, I'd rather share some reflections of our time here in the hopes that it will inspire others to make the journey.

walking back to the main building after parking the car and being awestruck at how peaceful and quiet it was. The sounds of the air (yes air has a sound), of birds, of bubbling creeks. The feeling of being a world away from the rest of civilisation.

wandering the property before sunrise, watching animals grazing and seeing the valley come to life

Imagining people being here over 100 years ago, walking in their footsteps.

sitting quietly with my wife, eating on the open air verandah, watching humming birds and smiling.

soaking very early in the morning, and very late and night. feeling nurtured and nourished by the waters.

riding through the valley watching squirrels scurry across the roads and reaching the geyser, watching it bubble to life from a grumble in the ground.

laying outside on the pool deck very late at night and seeing the milky way like I haven't seen it since camping as a child - seeing meteors, shooting stars and satellites. Breathtaking.

leaving with fondness and a yearning to return. Two days felt like a long time, but not long enough.

"In all the world, no waters like these" - perfectly put.

I love you Wilbur Hot Springs. I'm a very connected person and when I was told that I wouldn't have internet, cell reception, or anywhere to plug in my electronic equipment...my heart sank to my stomach.

What was I going to do with all my time? But it was beautiful, absolutely what I needed. Silence, reading, bike-riding, hiking, and painting the lovely, lovely scenery all around. If you are ever looking for some tranquility and a escape from the rat race...this is PERFECT.

    Useful tips:

No blowdryers or any plug-ins really. The staff will charge some things for you if you ask very nicely

No AC, it's 100% solar powered. Not a problem when we went, but just know that it gets hot in the summer, so you prob won't be staying in your room during the day. But there's a library, and so many wonderful places to chill around here.

Bring your own food. They have a great communal kitchen for cooking. And really delicious, freshly popped popcorn for the guests. They have pans/plates/cuttery/etc and all the spices you'll need. But don't forget to bring olive oil or butter for cooking your food!

Bring a hairband if you have longer hair. The spring water apparently can undo your perm, so I'm not sure it's that great for your hair in general.

    Clothing optional at the hotsprings

Baths are open all night. So take a dip late at night and check out the breath-taking stars!

Only showers are by the Hot Springs and bathrooms are communal by floors. Wasn't a big deal when we came.

They have complimentary bikes to do bike rides. Really fun! =)

Bring sunscreen...on hot days, the sun is pretty brutal here.

No photos of the baths area, for obvious reasons^_^.

Explore the areas surrounding Wilbur! It's beautiful. Babbling brooks, grazing deer, wildflowers. I loved it.

The accommodations are simple and rustic. Do not come here expecting fancy accommodations! If that's what you want, go to Napa. Wilbur is more of a retreat and places emphasis on simplicity and enjoying beauty of nature and the wonderful hot springs. This isn't to say that the hot springs area wasn't absolutely beautiful!

Bring your own towels and robes

    Bring flip flops

Bring a flashlight for late night dips in the pool

Take your shoes off before entering the main house.

    Hope these tips help!

I am big on ritual bathing, and have been to all the nearby hot springs. I love them all (except Harbin which is a meat market where you get groped by massage therapists and ogled by skanky old hippies) but Wilbur is my favorite!

The waters are by far the best. UNBELIEVABLY healing, wonderful waters. The pools are perfect, the size and proportion of the bathing areas is just right for the size of the hotel. Everything is tasteful, beautiful and clean. The staff is kind and loving. This atmosphere rubs off on the guests, who are typically laid-back, respectful, interesting people.

The silence rule is wonderful. I'd pay more, just to see Americans be quiet for once. (It seems surprisingly hard for some - luckily not many - people, who forget they have the entire rest of the world to blab in.) There is a social pool for when you start feeling chatty, and I had some really wonderful conversations there.

Wilbur is imbued with a deep understanding of the sacred nature of bathing and the surrounding nature, and it's the place you go if this kind of thing means something to you.

My only complaint is the sauna, which has just about everything wrong with it (I say this authoritatively as a Finn), but I don't go to Wilbur for sauna so it's inconsequential to me. I would not recommend spending any time inside this too-hot, too-dry, airless room laden with positive ions.

Aside from my sauna gripe, I heartily recommend Wilbur to anyone who goes to hot springs to meditate, heal, and spend quiet time.

Wilbur Hot Springs has been my special gift to myself for many years. I've come here, from both San Francisco and Los Angeles, after breakups to heal my heart, with boyfriends to share the beauty, with girlfriends as a relaxing getaway, and by myself, for personal R&R. It is my favorite place to unwind, relax, and just be. The fact that you cannot "plug in" is quite a relief, and if you must stay in touch with people, there is a standard pay phone where you can use a calling card (remember those?) or you can give out an emergency number so people know how to get a hold of you. Trust me, phones and computers are not wanted here. Kindles, iPads, fine, as long as they don't make noise.

The beauty of Wilbur is the serenity - all you hear is soft voices, the river trickling by, birds chirping, bees humming, and the wind. From the moment you step out of your car, you are instantly in a more profound state of calm. I love sitting on the front patio in the morning with my coffee or tea, just staring out the windows. Or I read a book, or I write in my journal. With all that quiet, thoughts and emotions come quickly, and the peace helps put life into perspective.

In the afternoon, I like to go for a long walk, hike, or even run in the valley. There are challenging hills, flat open spaces, and miles and miles of open space. If you're lucky, you will see deer, cows, hawks and squirrels. I've hiked for hours and never seen another soul.

All day and all night, the pools beckon. I've soaked at 3am, which is unlike anything. If you're lucky, a full, low moon will greet you and keep you company.

Yes, it's clothing optional at the pools. You get over this really fast. In fact, people in suits may feel awkward, but that's all up to you. Everyone is friendly, non-creepy, and looks out for one another. As a single woman, you can feel safe and secure that no one will bother you.

Follow the instructions on the website, and give them a call if you have questions. Bring a cooler of food, and dry goods. There is plenty of storage for everyone and it's sectioned out by rooms or by bunk/campsite. The kitchen has everything you need to cook with, season with, and clean with. For entertainment, there's instruments, a pool table, lots of picture books and places in which to read them, friendly people to meet, the pools or the hills. You won't be bored. And if you are, sit with that for a while. Learn how to unplug and take a moment for yourself. You've earned it.

My family and the dogs just had an overnight at Wilbur Hot Springs. It was really hot when we came in the afternoon, so stay hydrated during the trip. Google Map's directions are accurate (if you don't have GPS or your GPS is not updated). My brother who had GPS did not have a problem getting there.

My parents and our three small dogs spent the night at the Nature Preserve up on a hill. None of us has ever been on a fifth wheel and we enjoyed being there. My mom, however, was very worried about staying  there at night since it's isolated from everyone else by about a mile and there was not a single lamp post around (don't forget to carry a flashlight even if you decide to stay at the hotel because the main parking lot is a bit far). The hot weather was not a problem because the trailer has an air conditioner, and fans everywhere. Hiking up there may be laborious if your car is not able to drive up the incline (they say trucks and four-wheel drive cars can make it; ours is an SUV, which unfortunately had to stay down), and if you have a lot of paraphernalia to take to the trailer. We were offered assistance, though, by a kind man who had a truck (he could be the manager). You do have an option to rent a golf cart for a fee. Other than that, the trailer is equipped with a bathroom, stove, cookware (no grill, no steamer, no microwave), oven, refrigerator, other utensils, a bed for two, a dining area with 4 seats, couches, kitchen towels, tissue paper, shampoo, and dish detergent. The trailer has electrical outlets but you will need to notify the front desk if you intend to use them.

My brother and I stayed at the hotel in a beautiful room with three beds, a small closet, and a sink. The room has a lot of lamps, a few chairs, and mirrors. There are two shared toilets on the floor.

We had a great time exploring the vast natural area and taking pictures (no picture taking in the bath area). We went to the hot spring at night. The air was already a bit chilly then. The sauna was open until 10pm; you need a towel to sit on inside. There are three flumes of hot springs with different temperatures (ask which area is the coolest/hottest). We used the shower nearby before and after using the springs/pool/sauna. The shower rooms are equipped with liquid soap and shampoo. I recommend using the shampoo because my mom and I were amazed at how soft and shiny our hair was the next morning, although that effect could also be due to the mineral spring.

    Other things that are noteworthy:

Dogs are not allowed in the facilities outside the gated Nature Preserve, so you will need to leave them in the trailer before using the hot spring/pool/sauna. The trailer's door can be secured enough so that the dogs cannot open it.

Once you get there at Wilbur, and you feel that you might need to use the phone any time during your stay, make sure you try to make a phone call with your credit card at the phone booth just outside the hotel while the front desk is still open. My brother and I used our credit/debit cards but the AT&T service said they could not be used to make a call. If this happens, you can get a phone card from the front desk. The front desk, however, is open only from 10AM to 9PM.

The rooms don't have locks so If you're worried about losing anything, then perhaps bringing a luggage with locks or keeping valuables in your car may make you feel more comfortable. Carrying a small bag with you also sounds like a good idea.

The hotel sells some food (e.g. snacks, bottled water, cooking oil, a few ingredients you can use to cook spaghetti), and clothes (e.g. shirts and robes). I'm mentioning this 'cause my dad forgot to bring cooking oil and seemed to feel disappointed about it but was relieved to see the store carries virgin oil (although he decided not to cook anyway).

The bath area is clothing optional. If you're very conscious about your body image (clothed or naked) or feel awkward about being around naked people, come to the springs at night when the area gets darker (the lights are dim).

Finally, the whole place is a quiet natural setting - no internet, no cell phone signal, no TV, no radio. I really appreciate being able to experience simple living. We did a lot of walking/hiking, which I believe is beneficial to the body. The beautiful environment is also conducive to moments of reflection. I definitely want to come back to this place.

Okay, I really would like to have given this place a four star review, but some stuff happened that really ruined our trip for us. Our room was pleasant, I enjoyed lounging in the pools (although the scent of sulfur/ammonia was a bit intense at times), and the massage I had with Liam was excellent.

We stayed here one night (we had considered two, but changed our minds). As we were cooking breakfast in the kitchen on the first morning we went into our assigned cupboard where our food had been placed in a sealed tupperware container (where it was clearly not up for offer) and discovered a brand new sealed pound of coffee was missing. I thought I must have forgotten it in the car until we discovered other items were missing as well. My mother reported the theft at the front desk, where we were breezily informed "this sort of thing happens all the time, but usually they take wine," as if we were overreacting to the theft.

Here's the thing- it's not about the cost of the food that went missing (though I was seriously pissed to have my coffee taken, esp. at an isolated place where we were responsible for providing all supplies). It's the fact that someone (I presume a staff member) is going through what is supposed to people's private food supplies at night and taking whatever they please, without consequence- then what's to stop them from going into our room (which had no external lock) and stealing other stuff as well? I came into this environment thinking it was a relaxing, spiritual, peaceful atmosphere with trustworthy people, and we wound up locking up our stuff in the car because we no longer felt safe leaving it in our room.

I would expect this kind of B.S. at a hostel, but this is an upscale place where we paid nearly $300 for an overnight stay and expected to be able to relax without worrying about being ripped off. We will not be coming back.

We ( gf&i ) just had the most wonderful weekend at Wilbur! Staff was most friendly and the hotel was extremely clean!

Just look at the pictures on yelp, magical, enchanting and everything you expect!!!, with that said. You have to experience for yourself. I was so lucky to have gone there this weekend as they had special Saturday one night stay ( normally you have to stay 2 nights on weekend!). WHS was kind enough to offer this as we have no way of making it there on any Friday night due to work. I hope they put us on mailing list if this special ever comes up again since this way we do not have take days of work to enjoy Wilbur which we now love! But if we ever have opportunity and the time, we definitely would stay as long as we could.

What can I say, it was perfect hot spring destination. I am surprised how people have been able to kept it a secret, and surely I would have kept it a secret also if I did not use their yelp discount special rate!!  ( bit selfish on personal part because how wonderful it is, we hope to come any time with out it all booked full , just keep this heaven to our self!!!  ^_^, its that great!!! )

This place is closest thing to heaven on earth, and a place that should be hidden to people who know and can appreciate how beautiful this place is.

if you can't drive in 4 miles of very safe, however unpaved roads to hidden paradise and unable to tolerate following conditions:

    1. no showers in the very well cleaned private room/ bunk room or even at the very same beautifully kept mansion style hotel you are staying in.(altho there is no reason why you should need it, since you should have taken shower at hot spring paradise across the hotel before and after bath!)

    2. bring and cook your own food in a extraordinary, big and well equipped kitchen, not to mention how beautiful it is.

    3. sharing bathrooms with others

    4. no wireless signals whatsoever! (NO- I do NOT hear you now)
or wall plugs of any kind, no web, no tv, NO NOISE!  just sounds of nature and wilderness melting you away to be part of it.

(let your laptops sit at home
!! or f you bring one and need it, the so very kind staff there will help you charge it, if you leave it with them )

    5. Clothing optional area in world's best hot spring water bath.

    6. Quietness and Respect for each others in the resort. ( Respect and being quiet is so important in some areas of this resort and why the resort is so valuable!)

if you can't tolerate the above..
Than this hot spring resort is not for you.

BUT STILL GO for the day trip AND maybe you will see it is all worth it and its  all what makes the resort so much more enjoyable!

THANK YOU SO VERY VERY MUCH WILBUR HOT SPRINGS STAFF! 5 STAR ***** FOR EVERYTHING!!!

If i can add extra star for the guest there also, luckily at the time of our stay. Some guests that were staying there were playing guitars and singing beatles, jason mraz songs around dinning time and sounded fantastic, so fantastic that it made our stay even more enjoyable!! so Its really a 6 STAR RESORT! =)

After a good amount of research, we chose Wilbur (Orr was closed, BF had already been to Esalen, Vichy didn't quite sound like "us").   Starting with the reservation all the way to our departure, everything was awesome.

We arrived Sunday and had 2 nights booked.  We ended up staying for a 3rd.  You bring your own food (no store or restaurant nearby) and in order to save myself time and hassle, I prepared dishes ahead of time to just assemble or heat up - If I had known how well equipped the kitchen was, I may or may not have made the same choice.  The kitchen setup was great - you get your own generous space to store your stuff -  cupboard and fridge.   Everyone does their own dishes, dries and puts them away.  I have to say, I was impressed with the cleanliness and organization.

At first, it was so quiet and people kind of tiptoed around in the main house.  I was  a little uncomfortable and wasn't sure about where I should and shouldn't wear shoes, where I should whisper, who would be receptive if I said hello... and the sulphur smell was unexpected and took a minute to get over.   And there's no cell phone reception or internet.   Oh, and the lights are fairly dim since it is all solar and the bulbs are energy efficient.

I sat down with my book on the first night and read it front to back with breaks only for eating and a soak in the hot springs.  After I finished my book, I panicked for a bit, not knowing how I would manage to fill 3 more days!    Easily.   We had massages, read, chatted and enjoyed each others company, walked, soaked, ate, napped, stretched and munched on the popcorn that they make for the guests daily.  At one point, I even caught myself just sitting, looking around. Wow.  This is *relaxing*.

This resort isn't for everyone.   Bathrooms are shared (though some rooms have sinks).  The pool/soaking areas are clothing optional.   The only showers are down by the pool area and there are cute little frogs who have taken up residence there.   There is no daily maid service.  You bring your own towels.  You can drink alcohol (though no glass or food near the pool).  There are squirrels, deer and other critters all over (thus, a few rules about where food can and can't be and how it is stored).    But if you're the type who loves to get into some hot water and watch shooting stars and fully relax, this is a great spot.   I can't wait to go back for a chef weekend or, hopefully, a yoga retreat.

Wilbur is absolutely magical. I go here to escape the world and be an introvert, which isn't something my real life allows.

Read the website very carefully, it's a different kind of lodging experience, but well worth the extra effort.

Like some of the other reviewers have said, this isn't an experience for everybody. Open mind necessary.

After much research, I decided to try Wilbur Hot Springs
to fix the stagnancy and blockages I was feeling in my life. When I called to make a reservation I was disappointed to find out they were completely booked due to it being a "guest chef" weekend so we ended up booking a room at a cheap little motel in Williams (30 min away). We arrived in the morning, checked in and found out we weren't able to use the kitchen due to it being a guest chef weekend. They gave us the option to book the guest chef lunch for $25 (which at the time I thought was really pricey but it ended up being worth every penny).

I found the flumes and pools, got naked, soaked in some magical green mineral waters in 3 different temperatures, meditated and felt transported to a higher consciousness. For the first time in a VERRYYY long time I felt a soft tranquil peace permeating every inch of my body. Then when it got too hot, I jumped into a funky green colored swimming pool and watched as a family of deer munched on shrubbery 15 feet away. I kept thinking: I should do this every weekend.

Then to top that experience, we had the most amazing lunch from guest chef Charlie Casio who was the head chef and kitchen manager for the Eselen Institute in Big Sur. Oh. my. god. The food was so amazing I felt like I wanted to both eat forever and at the same time faint from extacy. Everything was made to perfection..to the highest and best use of each individual organic+local ingredient. The flavors danced on my taste buds and then vanished as beautifully as they came - clean and without a trace, leaving you to ponder the experience and yearn for more. I wanted to be Charlie's best friend, follow him around and eat everything he cooked. Even the honey came from HIS bees! It was the best meal I've ever had..better than Gary Danko..Chez Panisse...

After eating my fill and then some, I went back to the flumes and pool. As hard as I tried to get back into my pre-lunch state, I couldn't with my stuffed tummy. So I just soaked while my mind stayed present and active, half wishing I could get back to that higher realm of consciousness I experienced prior to lunch.

I can't wait to go back again. I went to work on Monday fully rejuvenated to the point where my co-workers swore I was glowing like a pregnant woman. What a wonderful experience. Next time I hope to stay a night and be able to use the facilities past 5pm. I can only imagine how it would feel to soak under the stars..

It's not a regular resort you may think of, but it's definitely a great place to spend a weekend to relax.

I had a good time there. Both men and women share the same baths. As others have already mentioned, clothing in the pool/flumes area is optional. Nobody really cares. The water is just as advertised... You will be stunned when you get there, it's beautiful, yet it's remote, no wi-fi, no cell phone reception, no tv... whatsoever. Plus you need to bring your own foods and cook your own meals. It's a great experience.

BTW, it runs exclusively on solar power, and you won't see any power outlet in any rooms...and there is no microwave....but as I said earlier you can still cook your own meal....the kitchen is well equipped...
Anyway, I will make another trip there if I have a chance...it's a great place!

Love hot springs and tried Wilbur--scheduled day use to try it out.  The pool area is great; very clean, maintained and nicely designed.  Was shhh'ed for whispering in the quiet area--they may want the sign to say 'no talking' rather then 'quiet'.  The kitchen/dinning was clean, orderly and aesthetically pleasing.  Checked out some of the rooms which seemed cozy but I'm guessing the walls are thin.  I definitely felt a lack of care for the day users and I was surprised for the price that Wilbur did not provide towel rentals and cups for water for the pool area.  There was not refrigerator space designated for day users as well.  And sadly the thing I found the most off-putting were the day use hours and the rigidity about getting days users off the premises by 5:00 pm.  I tried out day use to get a feel for the place and now I'm not so sure I want to return for an extended stay.

The emphasis here is really on relaxation and tranquility. There is no cell reception, internet, or even electric plug-ins (to a first approximation), you cook your own food in a nice kitchen, the clothing-optional Japanese-style flumes are silent, with an unsheltered "talking" one outside. The crowd is sedate and the nudity was a non-issue.

My wife and I and it really let us get away from it all to focus on each other and the beautiful calm surroundings. The library and common spaces in the house are good for reading a book, meals, playing pool, and there are some nice walking trails on the property. We met some interesting folk from our hometown over pool, and traded parts of our dinners with other guests in the kitchen.

The varied temperatures of the flumes were great, although since my wife and I wanted to talk to each other we spent more time in the unsheltered one, and got somewhat sunburned from it.

I would say this is a great place for couples and those who want a less boisterous atmosphere than some of the other hot springs, but one should be sure to be aware of all the preparations to make for being so 'off-the-grid.'

Daily grind got you down?  Sex life not what it used to be? Skinny jeans have you feeling, well, ummm, not so skinny?  Enter Wilbur Hot Springs, a serene oasis just outside of Williams, California, where you can leave your worries (and your pants) behind.

Tucked behind the rolling hills off of Highway 20, en route to Clear Lake, this rustic charmer is a hot tub enthusiast's dream and may hold the key to unlocking the most bashful bather's inner naked person.

I recently surprised my husband with a weekend getaway to Wilbur and not being one to casually drop his drawers in public, I am happy to report that this hot spring's relaxed, non-cruising vibe was enough to disrobe my modest man.

The 20-room hotel looks like it hasn't been updated since the 70's, but that's no matter.  The facilities are spotless and the rooms are cozy.  I suggest reserving a queen size bed on the second floor.  These rooms have their own sinks, the shared commodiums do not.  For single travelers, there is a bunk room which offers efficient sleeping arrangements.  And you can skip the private apartment option, which boasts its own cook space.  One of the joys of staying at Wilbur is partaking in the shared kitchen experience.  Just don't reflect on what your neighbor looked like in his birthday suit, back at the pool, because if you've visited a hot springs before, you'll recall most of the bathers who bare it all are not sporting a look you'd care to elicit.

However, do not let this thought dissuade you. For every three or four people you'd rather not see in the buff, there is the occasional fit figure that will linger in your thoughts long after you've bid the springs farewell.  A pleasant memory to recall when you're back to the daily grind, trying to hold on to your relaxed state that slips away all too quickly.

So sit back and contemplate this - we're all naked, underneath these clothes.

Popped in here last weekend for the one year anniversary with the SO.  We loved escaping the city and having a little adventure up and out of the normal path we trek.  At first I was reluctant to want to go towards Clearlake (sorry!) but once I began reading about the spa and its wonderful attributes I was sold!

We stopped off in napa the night before and picked up supplied at the local Whole Food and Trader Joes.  In retrospect we probably were overly ambitious, you have to cook in a community area and a homemade pasta sauce, pasta and veggies is a lot to take on with 20 other people crowding around you.  We did have fun tho, I really enjoyed peering into other people's pots and scaring the vegetarians with my huge hunks of procuitto.

We had a private room on the top floor and did not have any problems with noise, smells or any other complaints I have read about here.  You do have to walk the length of the floor to use the can, but what gives?  It's like 25 feet away.  The bathrooms were clean and the room was very comfie...also small, so pack lightly.

Getting outside was great and we hiked the Smelt Trail which took us about 1 and 1/2 hours.  The landscape is beautiful and it is interesting to inspect the old smelting facilities, they have a bit of a ghost town aura to them.

I am not really a hot tub kind of gal, it makes my skin really pink and my capillaries burst (thanks Ireland!), so I stuck to the coolest of the tubs, 100 degrees.  It was just my speed so I alternated between that tub and the green pool, good times. The mineral content is so high that you can literally float the day away, or at least until your pruny fingers demand that you exit.

With regard to the nudity, well, I would say that I am totally down with the nudity, always have been.  I mean, if you wear a suit you are totally wet and damp for hours to come, but if you get in naked you are dry in an instant when you get out!  That and, not to sound like a total hippy, I really do find beauty in pretty much every human body so I enjoy seeing what everyone has going on, I'm just like that.  Go nudity!

Don't expect the Ritz, this is def a do it yourself type place, but the relaxation and novelty is one of a kind.

This one's too hot.  This one's too cold.  Ahhhhhh, this one's just right!

Everyone needs a special retreat that's far away from the city, but not too far.  Less than 3 hours from SF, Wilbur offers 1800 acres of private nature to wander, natural mineral springs to soak, and a beautifully preserved turn of the century hotel to rest.  The vibe is super mellow.  People speak softly, move slowly, and smile genuinely.

I love the big, fully equipped communal kitchen.  They give you a designated shelf in the refrigerator and one in the pantry and you bring all your own food.  That way, you can cook what you want, when you want and likely end up sharing great conversation and delicious treats with a new friend.

The fluminarium has three flumes with water of varying temperatures depending on where you sit in the flume.  There are plenty of lounge chairs situated around the pool, which become the perfect spot to get a little sun during the day, or gaze up at the start-covered sky at night.

The beds are comfy, the common areas are spotlessly clean and the management is friendly and accessible.

You should note that WHS is clothing optional, so don't forget the sunscreen.

    Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh...................... ...........

This is the sigh of relaxation you will be making throughout your visit to Wilbur Hot Springs.

    Ewwwwwwwwwwww.......

Is the sound you will be making when you smell the sulfur.

Just kidding!!! I love the sulfur smell here!!  I did come to associate the sulfur smell with the healing and calming properties of the water, not to mention the fact that this is the only place I've ever been to on vacation where I felt I could finally unplug.

Wilbur, you are the retreat of my dreams. With your warm waters, your graded inclines, your view of the mountains, your silent visitors, and your communal kitchen.

My partner and I came here to celebrate our 3 year anniversary, her birthday, and to relax after her summer law classes... she was in desperate need of a break.  I needed a break after doing physical labor and other service-oriented and Maid of Honor-y duties for my very high-maintenance sister's wedding.  All we wanted was to-- BREAK FREE!!!  We didn't want to see ANYONE, or talk to anyone, for as long as possible.

We didn't know what to expect from Wilbur, but we were happy to discover on Yelp that this is a nice alternative to Harbin.  We've never been to Harbin, but we were looking for detached R + R rather than being asked "Can I float you?" around the warm pool, as we've heard is frequently asked at Harbin, which is basically synonymous with "Can I bone you?"

Not interested in being "boned" by anyone other than my partner, I especially don't find it relaxing to have my space invaded by some swinger-y man, woman, or couple.  So we decided, Wilbur seems to not have the sexual vibe that Harbin does, we're probably better off there.

THANK GOD we went to Wilbur!!!!  Comparisons to Harbin aside (as I think it's unfair to pre-judge it so harshly when we have never actually been there), Wilbur is the most soothing, relaxing place we have ever visited.

We camped and our campsite had the benefit of being elevated on a nice wooden deck. We put out our camping chairs, laid out our tent, and admired the view of the glorious mountain across the valley from us.  Not having to camp on the dirt was a real plus, especially since we did want a little comfort, but didn't want to pay the price for it. (We're on a budget-- law school, as I mentioned).

The flunariums are amazing.  The "ahhhhhhhhhhh" moments abounded as we went from sitting in the hot waters to almost napping on the ledges of the pools.  I have eczema and instantly felt relief from the flumes and the giddiness-inspiring lithium in the water.   We actually had a bit of a giggle fit related to a squirrel visitor by the tepid pool who actually laid lengthwise along a rope encircling the pool, as if it were a hammock.  Squirrel hammock = adorably hilarious!

There is nature all around Wilbur hot springs, and the beauty of this sacred place is that without the distractions, you can actually HEAR all of the animal sounds, SEE all of the stars in the sky, FEEL the wind in your hair and caressing your skin, and TASTE the delicious natural food you will make in the communal kitchen.

You can be as social, or as anti-social as you like at Wilbur. We decided to be anti-social, since we've been surrounded by people and had a number of family obligations, and now were ready to have no obligations whatsoever.  We spent the days and night relaxing, reading, nibbling, enjoying each other's company, and peering up at the incredibly bright stars from our tent.

If you desire to, though, you can play guitar and sing, or play pool or ping pong with your friends or other guests.

When we arrived it was about 95 degrees outside. Pretty hot.  We did however; find respite from the heat during the day and evening by quietly reading in the library, which became napping in the library. Nobody bothered us, or asked us to leave, and I felt like my body got to unwind and get some much-needed REST, which is what it had been asking for...

Everyone there, from staff to visitors, is kind and respectful, and understand why you are there, and don't bother you or try to communicate unless the communication seems welcome.

Wilbur, I can't wait to come back and visit you again. You are an idyllic social model in my mind.  I already feel like I could use another Wilbur recharge, and we just went two weekends ago. Now, if only life's everyday pace could slow down to Wilbur's... that would be fantastic.

Wilber Hot Springs is simply fantastic. The waters are extraordinary, epic on the scale of Lord of the Rings movie trilogy, the extended DVD versions! The first time my wife took me there was about a year and a half after being hit by a drunk-driver. My recovery had plateaued, and I thought that was as good as I was going to get. Two days in these waters and I felt amazingly better. Even more remarkable was that the improvement held after I left.

The areas climate does get a bit too hot for me in Wilbur, but they have the best remedy for that; a mineral water swimming pool! Beautifully cool, it's a great way to recharge between lobster soaks.

The lodge is lovely. We usually camp to save a bit of cash, but the rooms are quite cozy if you want to spend a bit more. The kitchen is AMAZING! A true joy to cook in. If your driving in from the East-Bay here's a great dinner idea: Pick up a half-baked Spinach and Mushroom stuffed pizza from Zachary's Pizza, and cook it when you get to Wilbur (you can thank me later).

We live in Portland, OR now, but I would rather spend 10 hours driving to Wilber (or fly in and rent a car) than go again to any  of the places I've tried up here. Wilbur Hot Springs is truly a special place.  : )

This review is based on my experience here compared to at Sierra hot springs and Harbin hot springs, which I have also reviewed.

We went to Wilbur for a weekend vacation, and we couldn't have been more impressed. The accommodations were luxurious, clean, and well maintained. The kitchen was professional-grade. The common areas indoors were comfy. The only drawback would be the price. Because there is no camping at Wilbur, your only option for longer than a day trip is to rent a room or a dorm bed on site, which is pretty expensive. You can only bring your own food and cook, and the nearest town is a good drive away. The store on site is not very well stocked. But, despite these issues, we were very happy here.

The main pool is a large warm pool surrounded by a stone border, with a garden-like setting around it. Separate from that, in a small building, are three small pools of varying heat. All the pools smell like sulfur, but the water feels excellent on the skin. They have a cold plunge that's just a bathtub filled with water, but really, what more do you need?

The property is large, and has a lot of hiking and biking trails, some abandoned mines, and the hot spring fed stream. It's also generally more secluded in that it's about 30 minutes away from the nearest town (Williams, CA).

The tubs are open 24 hours, which is nice, because they are far less crowded late at night. Even during the day though, probably due to its seclusion and price, the tubs aren't too crowded. The staff was pleasant, and the other guests were alright as well.

All in all, I recommend Wilbur, although it is somewhat of a luxury.

Four and 1/2 Stars...An off-the-grid, unplugged retreat on 1800 acres of beautiful green valleys and oak woodlands.  Oh, and the waters of Wilbur Hot Springs are...FABULOUS! You sink into the mineral bath and then BOOM you float.  Did I relax or what?!?  I am on-call 24/5 and occasionally that rolls into being on-call 24-7.  No phones or wireless computers here.  To be at Wilbur was to soak, to eat, to read, to sleep, to contemplate, to hike and to enjoy my significant other's company.  Both solitary and romantic at the same time if that's possible.

I am very modest in public.  My private life is my private life.  So these clothing optional hot springs have never been my thing.  I've gone to Grover Hot Springs for years (clothing required).  But after reading Yelp, I decided Wilbur was classy enough and not a "pick up scene."  So I took a chance and went.

The hotel is clothing required and not silent.  The respect people gave each other by being clothed at the hotel was appreciated.  Also, people talk as much as they want despite a few misleading comments here on Yelp.  They just keep a distance if they want to be quiet and reserved from the others.  My significant other and I chose to eat in the isolated veranda rather than the populated and chatty dinning room to get our privacy.  Delightful.

Nudity is allowed in the flume area only.  Most people wear there robes to the pool, undress right before getting in and redress upon getting out. There is zero gratuitous nudity here.  This modest gal was very comfortable to her pleasant surprise.

Rooms are very rustic and small, but the beds are comfortable.  You have to share bathrooms in almost all cases.  On the second floor some bathrooms do not even have sinks for washing hands or brushing teeth. But somehow none of this matters when you get here.  There are rooms on the second floor with sinks in them if that's a must for you.

The kitchen is a commercial kitchen that clients use family style unless it is Guest Chef weekend.  There's a fairly large dry good shelf and half a refrigerator for each room.  We dined like a Queen and King as we packed-in gourmet ingredients, and the kitchen had all the necessary accouterments.  We are vegans, but the ventilation makes it possible for carnivores, vegetarians and vegans to cook together in peace.  Some, however, dined very simply, spending little energy on cooking.

During our stay we had rainy weather for the first two days.  We spent the time enjoying the flumes, our books and each other.  The last day, the sun was out and it was warm (in February!), and we took a 5.0 hike and had a picnic at a table in a beautiful meadow about 1.5 miles from Wilbur's hotel.  It was another lovely day.

For a romantic getaway or a single person wanting to unplug and retreat from the fast lane, I cannot recommend this place more to unplug and escape!

Absolutely love this place.  Living in the Bay Area, its great because its only a two hour drive and you really can get away.  No televisions, no cell phone reception, no internet access.  My boyfriend and I discovered this place while we were both working in high tech and it was impossible to detach us from our work.  Wilbur was the only place we could really get away from all of it - even if it was only for a long weekend.

After ten years, the prices have definitely gone up for the rooms.  Guess that's what happens when you start to get popular.  I've also found that I have to plan a little further out because Wilbur is now more consistently booked - especially on the weekends.

But the tubs are awesome, the house is beautiful and the surrounding countryside is just breath taking.  Make sure to do some hiking out while your there.  Anytime of year is good.  I especially like going in the fall when the weather is a little cool and even raining.  Just hanging in the tubs and reading or just sitting is pure heaven.

Thanks, Wilbur Hot Springs, for an awesome weekend!

Spent last Sunday night with my boyfriend out at WHS luxuriating in the hot springs and the lack of connectivity (no cell phones here!). I also scored the Yelp discount thanks to a very nice person at the front desk.

The springs feel amazing (although the 110 degree one was a little too intense for me) and everyone is very respectful in the clothing optional environment. (if you are finicky about nudity, do not come here!). The lodge itself is cozy and comfortable with lots of couches and a policy against wearing shoes indoors.

Although I didn't get a chance to explore the grounds due to the rain, it was a great experience overall.

Wilbur is a jewel, an old Victorian hotel that's been kept up beautifully, completely solar and off-the-grid.  It's been there since 1865, and quite a few retreats, yoga and other, happen here every year.

The water is loaded with salinizing forces, lithium, sulphur, tons of minerals.  It's a force to be reckoned with, leeching all toxins out of your body.  Seriously, the water is almost like horseradish, it's the most intense hot springs I've ever experienced.  Very, very beneficial, just don't drink too much while you're there.

Prices are reasonable.  Rooms are like $120, camping is like $50.  There's a huge, completely stocked kitchen (NOT stocked with food but with pots, pans, utensils, seasonings) for you to do some wonderful cooking in.  There's a piano, a pool table, and quite a few guitars hanging on the wall or in cases.

Go out to Wilbur and get fixed.  Bring some good reading, some good grubbins, and enjoy yourself.

The first time I went to WIlbur, it was because the Esalen Institute was booked up; upon arrival, I was disappointed because it wasn't Esalen. At the end of 3 days there, I really didn't want to leave, because I realized it was Wilbur.

Yes, duh. Wilbur has an incredible energy to it. I love the water (stinky yummy!) - incredibly healing, and the atmosphere is peaceful and serene. They have a huge gourmet kitchen where the most interesting people (it seems to attract cool peeps consistently) cook up amazing dishes. 1800 acres of private land to hike on. Apparently Michael Franti fell in love with WIlbur a few years back, and was going to hold a big event there, but plans somehow fell through.

I wish the price was a bit cheaper. They do have cool specials you'll hear about if you sign up for their newsletter, but can be more difficult for anyone on a budget. Still, I'll never go to the more- affordable Harbin again - the water there is either boiling or lukewarm, the vibe too sexual. I'll save up and go to Wilbur when I can!

    Highly recommended.

We recently stayed at Wilbur Hot Springs for 2 nights and it was wonderful! We arrived right around check-in time and as we approached the entrance an older dapper gentleman greeted us with a "Welcome to Wilbur Hot Springs!" It was a true Ricardo Montalban moment. We learned in our conversation with him that he was Richard Lewis the owner and he couldn't have been nicer.

We've been to other hot springs and everyone says Wilbur is the best because of the waters. The waters were intense and I loved the different temped tubs and their swimming pool was a divine 72 degrees! I think I swam more in the pool then I soaked which is usually the other way around. The staff was super friendly, the massage by Nancy was awesome and the guests were all respectful and easily engaged..no trippy weirdo vibes happening here.

The interior of the hotel is like going back in time. The common areas are lovely and have nice touches like radiant heaters to warm the chilly spots on the verandah. They also had several musical instruments which offered live music from other guests in the evening.

There were a couple of drawbacks. I wasn't keen on the fact there are no exterior locks on your guestroom door, but this is the case in many other places, not sure why, just is. There was never an issue of security, but since their parking lot is about a 1/4 mile away it would be nice to be able to lock some things in the room. The other thing about the rooms, is their doors. The room doors have these weird screen windows on them covered by curtains. However when you're sleeping at night the light from the hallway shines right in, so if you want to sleep bring an eye mask or something else to cover the window. At $200 night and providing all our own supplies we expected at least a little more privacy in our rooms...and the walls are thin!

The more disturbing issue was the Japanese camera crew...yes, there was a camera crew on our 2nd day spent at the tubs and they caused quite a stir. Now if you're going to soak at communal hot springs, modesty isn't typically paramount to you. However when a camera crew is guided (by a staff-member) around the clothing-optional tubs in the middle of the afternoon and begins filming without notifying the guests, that becomes an issue. My beau and I were pretty laid back, but they quickly got an ear-full from some other guests. It turns out they weren't filming the tubs, but the landscape behind the tubs. But when a camera is pointing (and rolling) in your general bare-butt direction without so much as a warning, it's unsettling. This became the buzz for the remainder of the afternoon, primarily because it simply wasn't handled well by the staff. There should have been signage and communication with the other guests that a camera crew was going to be filming on location in the tub area. period. There were never any apologies made upon our checkout the following day. We were approached by the staff member leading the camera crew around and she told us not to worry and mentioned ,"You know how the Japenese are, they don't like to show nudity." that was just a weird comment to make all the way around.

Anyway, go for the beauty, the tubs, the water. Our consensus is that we'll stick with Orr or Tassajara..just our personal preference.

This place is amazing.  A natural hot spring combined with a century old hotel/spa in a remote location that dazzles the eye with its natural beauty. A dirt road leads to a secluded turn of the century hotel /spa.  Exiting the car, you'll immediately notice the sulphur smell and the layer of dust on your car from the dirt road trip.   Opposite the hotel building is the hot spring pools.  There is an open hut that shelters 3 soaking tubes. The tubs progress from warm to very hot.  You need to shower and have foot bath before entering the soaking tubs.  There is also a cold dip tub as well.  In addition, there is a larger cold water pool that's also fed by the hot spring where you can lounge and read magazines.  Be sure to drench yourself in sunblock.

The soaking tubs were great and very peaceful. I could feel the hot water releasing the tightness in my shoulders and I felt very relaxed. Most areas are also no-talking zones.  There is a small pool that is designated for talking and conversation.  Almost all the people (all ages, shapes and size) were naked in this clothing optional place. If you do wear bathing/swim suit, you'll be the exception and stand out like a sore thumb.  Hint for the guys - make sure nothing else stands out or stands up because that would be embarrassing.

The hotel has a very rustic - hostel - communal feel to it. You can rent a (very expensive) room, get a dorm room or stay at a camping site.  I know they have camp sites but I'm not sure if they're operational and/or open.  They have a massive kitchen where I saw people preparing their own food.  You're allowed to bring in your own food and cook it.  Several large fridges are available to store food.  You wash and clean your own items. They have store like area where you can buy snacks and water/drinks.  You also need to take off your shoes prior to entering the hotel. A very large bowl of free popcorn in the kitchen and yoga classes was a nice additional touch to give this place a well deserved 5 stars.

Rejuvenation comes in many forms.  Wilbur Hot Springs makes it their business to help you relax, revive and rejoice.

Wonderful baths!  Various temperatures...cool, warm, hot and crazy hot!  I love the sulfur smell and it's effects on my skin.  Healing my aches and pains...bringing me to a new balance.

    Fabulous views...truly remote.  A sanctuary.

The accommodations are comfy and clean.  Many varieties and types of rooming options from tent to dorm to private to luxe (a little bit nicer) private.

The shared kitchen is well stocked in pots/pans/cutlery/serving utensils....but that's where I have a little trouble with Wilbur.  Cooking every meal is not my idea of relaxation even though it IS fun to cook with friends and strangers.

Bring your book and hurry up and slow down at Wilbur.

    OMG, this place is amazing.

incredibly friendly service (they let us in before the check-in time without paying the $20 fee -- nice!), a charming hundred-plus year old hotel, crisp, clean sheets, environmentally-friendly cleaning products, a huge kitchen with long wooden countertops, comfy library with tons of magazines and books, very reasonable prices, not too far from SF (but just far enough - no cellphone reception!), plenty of cool places to relax in the shade and drink wine with your friends, and it's SOLAR powered.

wait, did i even mention the hot baths? the cool baths? the swimming pool?!  the sauna? the nekkid people?! the free outdoor yoga on the weekends? aaaaaah, what a relaxing couple days (and trust me, i'm not very good at relaxing.)

i'd recommend not wasting your money on a private room (unless you plan on meeting someone down at the tubs :-) and simply getting a bed in the common area. just get thyself to wilbur and watch your cares melt away...

I have to say that my review reflects the fact that I didn't give proper justice to Wilbur, especially since I'd been aching to go there for years.  I loved it, but next time I'll spend more time there.

To quote a previous reviewer, the waters of Wilbur truly are a force to be reckoned with.  I liken soaking in these waters to getting a deep tissue massage - not all wonderful and therapeutic experiences are delicate and rose-scented.  The evidence of your having had a nice, long soak at Wilbur just might stay with you even after a shower or two.

I point this out only because, while others relish the smells of the water, others (like me) would have appreciated knowing that the smell is very strong, especially in the flumes.

That said, this is an utterly charming resort that is both laid back and sophisticated.  The respect and good feelings that my friends and I felt from both the staff and other visitors was wonderful (and much nicer than some other hot springs in the state).  The grounds, the pools, the surroundings and the amenities at Wilbur are top notch!

I will be back again, but only when I can fully enjoy it for a few days, and not when I'm concerned about having to attend a function back at home, later in the evening.

I LOVE Wilbur!!! ...been going for years....its way better than Orr or Harbin, both of which have to use artificial means to heat their water..not so with Wilbur, you get real deal geothermal hotsprings...and yes that's what real springs smell like. If you don't like the smell of sulfur -stay home and take a bath.
Go up in May or early June and catch the spectacular wildflower display in Bear Valley. Bring your 4wheel drive and catch some of the fun dirt roads through the back country.

It's totally my favorite place on earth.

I would have given this place 4 stars for all those reasons given here by other reviewers, it is all true.

    However...

How come no one but me saw the mice running around the kitchen and in the dining room?!? It was disgusting!
Maybe only I saw them because one mouse visit our room and stayed overnight so I was looking around for his mice friends afterward, and saw many of them!

When I told the man at front desk we had a mouse roommate at night he said: "oh. okay." and left me standing there feeling I'm crazy for complaining about something small like that.

I started going to Wilbur 20+ years ago when you could stay in the Bunk Room for $25.00. Now it is 100 bucks. Same room, same bed, same water. They have really gone after the high rollers and left us old faithfuls wondering "what the ____"? Stop spending so much on advertising and get back to basics of providing a healing sanctuary and not an up-scale spa experience.

I loves Wilbur!  The closest thing we have to an onsen in California.  It's super laid-back, restful, beautiful, and the people are nice who work and visit there.

The mineral baths are not sex separated like most of the places in Japan, and are clothing optional.  However, like many "clothing optional" places in CA, they really mean "clothing discouraged".

I guess you could wear a swimsuit if you were really self-conscious, but you would then feel self-conscious because you'd be the only one with a bathing suit on.  Anyhoo, no one cares, believe me.
