If your're looking to shoot your best score ever, maybe you shouldn't play Widows Walk, although you will probably have some fun cursing your way through this course.

Like most people have mentioned, this course is not easy by any means despite the relatively short overall course length, due to the narrow fairways and well placed bukers.  You really should try your best to keep your driver locked down in your bag for most of the round and try to work on some solid target golf.  There aren't many places to bail out if you do hit an errant shot as the tall grass comes pretty close to the fairways, so a prememuim is definitely placed on accuracy versus distance off the tee.  The course was in good condition and there are a few elevated tees that give you a chance to appreciate the scenery and ocean views, and since the rounds seemed to be spread out well the groups behind and in front of us didn't really come in to play.

This was a fun round and is definitely a good value for your dollar, and their attitude to bringing in outdoor drinks did seem pretty relaxed.

One thing that should be mentioned is that you should bring your bug spray and douse yourself good before your round.  We came unprepared and started getting attacked in the parking lot, but bought some spray at the shop and the gnats all but disappeared.

This is a great public course located a good ways down route 3A from Boston.  My friends and I play here a good amount, as its fairly priced, friendly, and seemingly pretty empty most times.  I've admittedly only played the front 9, but I loved it enough to write the review anyway.

Positives:

The layout.  It seems like this course was squeezed into the space they were given, but the results are pretty fun.  There are many holes which are very different from standard Massachusetts courses.  For example, the 8th hole is a 275 yard par 4.  This looks easy when you read the score card, but the first shot is over about 200 yards of water downhill, and the green is protected by a huge hill running around the green.  The 9th hole has you teeing off from about 50 feet above the fairway down a long par 5.  The high advantage almost lets me get it there in 2.

Cost.  They actually run a deal here that between certain hours you can play 18 with a cart for $44.  They also have a 9 hole rate that doesn't get any higher than $24 walking.  This is very reasonably priced considering the fun and challenge offered.

Challenge.  Widow's Walk is not by any means easy.  Although its not incredibly long (6400 yards from the back tees), the layout, bunkers, water, and hills all contribute to the challenge factor here.  However, its still enjoyable for players of all skill levels.

Negatives:

Greens.  Maybe its just because of how early in the season it is, but the greens need to be better maintained.  The speed changes quite a bit from round to round, and even hole to hole.  Get out there and mow!

Hilly!  Don't be a hero and try to walk all 18.  There are some enormous uphill climbs to get to the next tee box.  You're usually rewarded with a great view of the entire area, but its harder to enjoy after you just climbed a 45 degree incline 50 feet up.

Distance from Boston.  Its a pretty long ride down here, but certainly worth it.

Overall Grade: B+

This is a great course for the money, and my pick for a fun course to play on the weekend.

This really is a great course, certainly one of the best on the South Shore and a good value. You will likely only need your driver on the Par 5s and maybe a few long Par 4s, but what Widow's lacks in length it makes up for with small fairways and plenty of tee shots which demand very good accuracy. Most players are going to donate some balls to the surrounding woods, that's just a given.

I think another review mentioned this, but it's definitely a chore to walk this course, I'd highly recommend taking a cart. Lots of up and down hills and sometimes some distance between holes. Also, this is another course where you can bring a cooler of beers or whatever and nobody is going to care, which is always a good thing.

When a golf course gets built next to your house when you're a kid, you learn how to golf.  When that golf course happens to be a Scottish-style links course with naturally windy conditions, you REALLY learn how to golf...

As is said on any review out there about Widow's Walk Golf Course, this is not the place to use your driver.  It is a relatively short course where having a finesse game is a big help, as the tight fairways, doglegs, and small, well-bunkered greens will reward those with accuracy and shot-planning and kill anyone who tries to rip the cover off the golf ball.

The course is lined with trees and brush on every hole, which gives it an exclusive feel, with the almost certain guarantee that you will lose a couple golf balls (and perhaps your temper) during the round.  There are spectacular views of the ocean and the surrounding community on a couple holes, and the course's dedication to preserving the environment pays off with an abundance of different trees, plants and wildlife scattered through the course.

The course is decently maintained, although as a regular it sometimes seems that the grounds crew can't make up their minds as to where they want to have the fairway end and the rough begin.  It also has a driving range, putting green and a pub next to the pro shop.

Overall this course is one that any true golfer must play - good, friendly service, very reasonable prices for a public course, and will test many aspects of your game while still giving you the chance to turn in a very good round.

(Edited to include that I used to work here for four summers while in high school/college)
