I think great changes have come to "Wholey Guacamole" since the new owners took over in the fall of 2008. The food is outstanding. They offer a nice variety of food to accomodate the young and old. You can be a canivore, vegetarian, fish lover, dieter, spicy or mild and even a kid and still be able to find a favorful well prepared meal. There aren't too many restaurants in the area that do such a great job taking care of such a wide range of tastes.
I over heard the owner (she is so nice) talking to a customer who was "thanking" her for her generosity and last minute help for a local fund raiser. Moments later, I was chatting with someone while waiting for our table to be cleared and this person had been at the fund raiser. She told me that the food had been phenomenal and she was sure the restaurant was going to be busier because so many people had enjoyed the food that day.
I haven't tried everything (the egg dishes), but what I have tried I have always found to be well prepared and tasty. I had the coconut flan and the tres leches cake for dessert and both were great.
This is a "must visit!"

Went there as a last minute choice, as plans had changed for the evening.  I was very impressed by the menu and the specials blew me away.  The service was great, very attentive and helpful.  The food was some of the best authentic Mexican I've had in quite some time.  Will definitely add WG to our restaurant rotation.

I have given this place two tries, and finally I can say that it sort of blows. I have never had anything but incredibly bland tacos, greasy burritos, and in general, their food has a distict lack of flavor. It's a shame because I am dying to have a cute neighborhood place that churns out reliable tacos, but this is NOT the spot.

Pros: It's close to my house, which doesn't really count as a pro

Cons: Bland and flavorless food prepared without soul, small menu with 'safe' choices, strip mall location, no ambiance, food=expensive considering the quality

Wholey Guacamole (WG) is a cute name.  Thankfully the food is not cute but rather simple, very freshly prepared, homemade style and fairly reasonable by North Shore standards.  Note that the restaurant IS NOT affiliated to the best of my knowledge with Wholly Frijoles, the well known Mexican haunt on West Touhy.   Rather WG occupies a small strip mall space book ended by a Blockbuster and some other establishment in the Hubbard Woods area right at the Glencoe/Winnetka line.  The menu is somewhere between an authentic Taquera and a slightly more Americanized neighborhood Mexican restaurant, of the highly casual variety.  It is not Tex-Mex but more closely resembles Los Mogotes De Michoacan in Highland Park but the WG clientele is muy gringo, as would be expected given the Tony locale.  You order off the blackboard or a menu and the nice waitress single-handedly juggles the Range Rover crowd dispersed among maybe 8-10 tables.  It's not fancy at all.  Take-away activity on a Sunday evening appeared very robust.  I enjoyed Chili Rellenos, con queso, they were delicious.....light , fluffy not greasy.  They offer homemade salsas and sauces, including a very hot red sauce I requested that was great.  They have more upscale items too -- like Tampiquena (skirt steak served with an enchilada).  I think there are shrimp dishes too.  A couple of housekeeping items, its cash only...no credit or checks...and they just added limited beer and wine...no margaritas YET :-(...but hopefully soon.  There are other decent options nearby for casual food like Blackies, for example.  But give WG a try...based on freshness of the food an extensive menu and pleasant service.

History

Established in 2007

As of September 2008, the restaurant is under new ownership. The new owners are quietly transforming the menu to add new authentic Mexican dishes without eliminating the ones you'll find in any neighborhood tacqueria. The focus is on quality, flavor and friendly service. Children are always welcome.
