9 reviews for Whole Foods
Whole Foods in Milwaukee is just like any other Whole Foods in the nation. There are no real surprises. It's overpriced natural and organic food and accessories.
I only go to Whole Foods for one reason really... alcohol. They have a great beer selection that is NOT overpriced at all for craft brews and imports. Also, their wine selection is solid and they offer discounts for purchases of 6 bottles or more.
Nice store, however, travel down to Oak Creek and get some incredible bargains on the same stuff WF sells only much cheaper. Woodmans is the place to shop! AmyLu sauasge,...WF price $6.29, Woodmans, $3.99, Organic Cauliflower $1.99 lb, Woodmans $2.99 FOR THE WHOLE HEAD! Same day (Woodmans).....ground flaxseed was a steal at a $1.99 clearance price .I've never seen anything on clearance at WF Overall, I shop WF less and less, but it is a very nice store. It's just way too expensive!
The store has a really nice lay out. Everything in the store is EXPENSIVE the only thing I found cheap were canned ginger ale and fresh pineapple juice. They give bag refunds (10 cents) when you bring your own shopping bags. The bakery has a deal on sorbet and gelato for 3.99 for 12 ounces. I will be going back just for that, if anything go for the samples.
B+ for selection
D- for prices.
Take the trip to trader Joe's instead.
I know I'm crazy, but I had a few hours the first weekend Whole Foods opened in Milwaukee and I went to check it out. I waited 10 minutes to get into the parking structure, which is actually quite well-designed in that whatever level you park on is basically equally close to the store since it is very vertical and there is a convenient elevator to the ground level. When I got into the store I decided there was no way I was using a cart, it was wall-to-wall people. I darted through the product section, grabbing some hard-to-find green thai eggplants, browsed at the deli, meat and fish counters and spent a little time in the natural body and health aisles.
It's hard not to be impressed with the selection, this truly is the Home Depot of organic foods, and the store is generally well laid-out and was impeccably stocked. Being I was there on their third day open, it remains to be seen how much those crowds will subside during the coming months. I am a loyal Outpost and Good Harvest (Waukesha at Hwy T & Silvernail) customer, so it's hard for me to imagine shopping at Whole Foods very regularly, but I know if I was looking for a special ingredient, this would be my likely choice.
The most interesting and innovative area were the individual stations selling stir fry, tacos, sandwiches or pizzas to order. There are bar stools for those who want to eat quick while watching food preparation as well as a lot more cafe tables outside the main shopping area. A large bakery, coffee and gelato bar are also onhand. I have to admit, despite my reservations about Whole Foods being a big chain where organic is turned completely commercial, the store has a lot to offer. It's a hangout, contrived as it is, and I guess we'll see how Milwaukee latches on to it.
Update: I went back 10-15-06 with my mom and brother. We wanted to get some stir-fry from the Asian cafe area and the wait was "at least" 20 minutes. People were confused where to order and there was no system for alerting people that their food was ready other than to make them wait in the crowded cafe area until the dish was called out by the cooks.
We skipped that and bought some decent california rolls instead. I had to wait five minutes to purchase them, but then we waited 10 or 15 minutes to check out with our small cart of groceries. I don't think I would return unless I needed a special ingredient that I couldn't find at one of the more convenient organic grocers.
Skip Whole Paycheck and go to Outpost instead. Better selection, much more reasonable prices, locally owned.
I still give Whole Foods high marks for their buffet. Good stuff.
It's about time Milwaukee dared to go beyond Roundys and Sentry. Come on people, we can afford this. The take home foods are great and have a lot of variety (Indian, Japanese, Brats). Produce is the best in town. Not to mention it is the only place to find many hard to find organic health and beauty aids. Moms, lots of great organic baby/childrens items too.
Whole Foods has the best selection of organic/natural/vegetarian foods. I especially love the deli and hot bar selection. And the bakery of course... weekends are great to visit, many free samples! My only complain would be the prices, they are a bit high but I've been happy w/everything I've purchased and am usually in and out pretty quick even on the weekends.
Lots of organic/vegetarian foods in here. It was a lot of fun to walk thru and check out when it first opened. But now I might stop by for something from the bakery or fresh produce section. They also have some nice food bars to eat a quick lunch. The pizza/pasta section is great! Everything here is pretty overpriced though.
