9 reviews for Who Song & Larry's Mexican Restaurant & Cantina
It's neither authentic nor Mexican. It's like Z. Tejas...Mexican inspired kinda sorta. The food's average. I can't complain about it, but i don't live for it. I'd rather have Javier's, but it lacks the cheap drinks, view, Couviness, and deck. I'm not a huge fan of bastardized Mexichow, but it's okay enough. Just don't start thinking that any actual Mexican food, anywhere in the entire great country, or even in Texas since this is more Tex-Mex, tastes like this.
Who Song's does have going for it: stiff drinks, reasonably priced food without weird processed junk in it, great service, killer happy hour specials...and you can sit on the deck looking at the endless gridlock that is the Interstate Bridge. Plus, it's my favorite place to go with a large pack of friends in Couv Rock City since the Holland shut down. (everyone, pour a little out for The Holland.)
Who Song & Larry's Mexican Restaurant & Cantina is an okay place to visit if you are not too picky about your Mexican food. The food is alright, tastes like a low-end Azteca to me, but the deck is great when it's summertime. Who Song's is located right on the Vancouver side of the Columbia River and it's a great place to have drinks with friends for happy hour. It's a little out of the way if you live in North Vancouver and are fighting the I-5 traffic, but a good place to visit.
Alrighty then...I propose a rename of this bad boy to "Who Suck & Scarry's Faux Mexican Only Popular Cuz It's Next To The River & Craptina" Why? Oh let me count the ways...
THE GOOD - It's on the river. During nice weather, it's a perfect place to enjoy your substandard food and watered down drink. The bartender was nice.
THE BAD - It blows. I went here only once...that's it. I can't be wooed back. I've had worse, but when you hear everyone go on about how great it is...it just makes you wanna puke...more than the food. Oh yeah...so it's not that awful...but clearly the point of their "cuisine" is to not compete with the flavor of the drinks...which is a challenge cuz they are WEAK.
THE UGLY - Do they wipe the tables off? I've never wanted to leave a bar section so bad in all my time living here. It was filled with loud-mouthed soccer moms arguing about what assistant coach was better...in between loud cell phone calls...about the same topic. I wish I could have drowned them out with hard liquor but the drinks weren't cuttin' it. The rice...blecch. The beans....barf. The burrito...conceived by a bungling baboso...which one?...Who Song or Larry? Which ever one it was deserves a good ass kicking. You should be ashamed of yourself for allowing anything this bland to be served to a self-respecting Mexican. Pendejos.
IN SUMMARY - They only get points for location and the fact that the bartender was reasonably friendly...albeit stressed as hell by the barrage of obnoxious babbling bungholes. There are like 4 or 5 restaurants down there...most with a river view. You'd be loco to pick this one. Take it from a cholo who's even more watered down than their drinks...the food sucks even by my low standards.
This does NOT have authentic Mexican food and the service is terrible. I have eaten here three times over the last year and half, each time thinking, it should be great - I love Mexican food, its on the river with a great view. Each time I have left very disappointed and the last time was definitely the last time I will ever go.
The food is really TexMex, if even that. The service in the times I have been there, which were not busy, has always been slow, snippy, and awful. The only reason I gave this place two stars is the view it has of the river and the balcony thing where you can eat outside overlooking it. But this view isnt enough to get us to come back, ever.
Like James P. said, this place isn't really bad or good. You pay a little more per plate than some of the more authentic Mexican places in the area mostly just for the riverfront view. They do get some live mariachi type music going on the weekends if that's your thing. Also, if you enjoy embarrassing birthday folks, they're glad to stick a giant pink foam cake on your head and sing for all the world to hear.
The weekends are crowded, so expect chaos and a wait. The staff has been friendly, no complaints. It's just nothing above par, so I've found no reason to go out of my way.
Born and Raised in Vancouver, there are a few things that stay with you and the city "Who Songs" is one of them. Located on the Colombia River, with a nice deck outside for dining this is a nice little place to go.
This is a great restaurant for families, large groups and hitting the bar. The waiters are friendly, service is great, can be slow as this place gets packed but always a treat to have the bards come around and sing at your table.
If you order the special guacamole, they will make it at your table while singing the guac song, this is my daughters favorite! If your a native you've probably been and if your planning a visit to the Vancouver-Portland area, you should try to stop in for a meal or quick table side guac. And While reservations aren't needed I recommend you make them if your headed there in the evening.
Not excellent, but not horrible. An OK choice if you're just looking to go eat down by the riverfront.
The atmosphere tends to be a little chaotic around dinner time, and the service suffers for it. The food is your typical Mexican fare, and nothing I've tried there stuck in my mind as extraordinary.
This is a decent place to get Mexican food at fairly reasonable prices, especially if you get their combos that are around $10.00 or so. Going when the weather is nice is a treat if you can get a table overlooking the river.
i was working out in a bunch of dirt most of this past summer and our whole crew would go here semi regularly for drinks and to avoid any rush hour traffic back into portland. its a pretty nice looking place and we definitely got a lot of stares being covered in mud and all and essentially showering in their bathrooms. none of the staff complained what so ever and were all great to deal with. they have a lot of seating, inside and out and a pretty well stocked bar. overall i had a good time when i was there, but the place is just some boring mexican themed family/party type place. its also ridiculously expensive, and i probably would never go there unless some people i was with wanted to for some reason.
