Agree with what everyone else has said.  I felt that Whitney was present throughout the entire massage, and was highly intuitive.  She also had an obvious passion for this work, and we had a great conversation about somatics.  At the same time, she allowed me to 'lead' the conversation and I am sure that if I didn't want to talk, the entire massage would have been spent in silence.

It has been a four days since my massage with Whitney, and like other reviewers have said, I have a deeper connection to my body.

My only regret was not booking a longer session!

I just found Whitney through a Google search. She's close to where I live, and I was impressed by all the great reviews, as well as the fact that she's obviously very eclectic in her knowledge and approach. I always find that's usually a sign of a good massage therapist.

And she is quite good. She has a very nice demeanor too, and a great, quiet space in her home. I didn't have anything seriously wrong. It was more of just a maintenance massage and me treating myself. But left feeling incredibly relaxed and loose. I would highly recommend Whitney for anybody in the area.

Whitney is terrific and has all the qualities that I like in a massage therapist...thorough body knowledge, a quiet and calm demeanor, not afraid of silence (although we do tend to chat when I'm there), and the ability to adapt immediately to what the client needs. I have always gone to her home office, which is a very soothing room and always plenty warm enough--nothing kills a massage like a cold room! She takes care of every detail, from non-invasive music choices (or no music, whichever you prefer) to privacy and the offer of a glass of water afterwards.

In February, I was in a car accident that totaled my car when I was 14 weeks pregnant. Whitney did a great job with my neck and shoulder pain (fortunately that was the only injury) and could see how I was holding tension in my body and how to alleviate it. I am sure that I healed that much faster thanks to her sure hands. I continued to see her a few times for prenatal massage and always had a great experience. She knows exactly how to set up the table for all the stages of pregnancy and makes sure that you are as comfortable as possible. She is very knowledgeable in different concepts involving pregnancy and childbirth, and knows what kinds of questions to ask to make sure she has a full picture. And what a nice feeling to be pampered like that while feeling big and awkward!

Overall...Whitney is awesome! Highly recommended indeed!

Whitney is such a badass when it comes to all things body-related.  I have a knotty back in general, due to my work all day at a computer, plus likely bad posture, etc.  Like all the other posters have said, she figures out what needs fixing and just fixes it.  I felt nearly euphoric after our last session.

I suspect that I'll be seeing her regularly now that I'm training for roller derby.  Nothing like bunched up muscles and bruises to make a massage look really good.

Whitney is very professional and fabulous at what she does. My mom has been ill and in much need of a healing touch. Whitney came to the house, talked with her to find out her medical issues and gave one on the best massages ever! She also massage my mom's partner and he loved it too.
Thank you very much - once again I see how much a bit of thoughtful kindness can change your day.

Whitney is down right amazing at what she does. she has the skills and sensitivity to ask you the right questions and read your body so that she can apply her knowledge to best treat you. after waiting entirely too long to get body work done she worked wonders on me and even now, after nearly a week, I still feel better than I have in a long time.

plus she is fabulous as a person too

seriously - you won't be sorry. in fact you will be the opposite of sorry

Whitney is RAD. Not only is she the best massage therapist I've ever been to, she's also really sweet and caring. I have ongoing migraine and stress issues that end up with my neck not being able to turn much, but after Whitney works on my head and neck I actually have something resembling a normal range of motion! I usually spend a minute or two after my massage going "Look, Whitney! My head turns! THIS IS AWESOME".

This is definitely not a one-size-fits-all massage experience- Whitney completely customizes the massage to what you need/want, drawing on her hugely varied skillset to give you something that works just for you.

Whitney made me like my body again.

No wait.  That's not quite right.

She INTRODUCED me to body.  Like, for the first time.  I hadn't actually noticed that it was there before -- my head had always been too interesting and distracting to get past itself.

She said, "Hey Sarah, I know you just think you're here for back pain, but I'd also like you to meet someone. It's your whole body.  Look, when I poke it here, it relaxes.  Doesn't that feel good?"

    I was stunned.

She then proceeded to do all sorts of weird trippy things like poke me in one place to make something happen in another place... stuff that makes ABSOLUTELY NO SENSE to my brain, but my body was ALL about it.

So I went back again. And again. And again.  And now my body and I are now on regular speaking terms, thanks to Whitney.

    Thank you, Whitney.

I recently received my first massage from Whitney. I say "first" because I fully intend to pay her another visit in the future. She has a friendly and comforting demeanor which helped me push aside a significant amount of my discomfort about being touched by someone I'm not intimately involved with.  Even more impressive is that she managed to chase away a great deal of the stiffness and pain in my neck, back, and hips. In fact, the very moment I stood up from the table, I noticed that the sharp pain that had been living in my right hip for days was gone. Since I have chronic health problems, I didn't expect her to perform a miracle and send me away completely pain-free, but neither did I expect to walk away feeling as good as I did and to remain feeling *noticeably* better for several days afterward.

Whitney does work out of her home, but in a separate building at the outside edge of her backyard, so it feels much more like you're at a quaint spa than someone's house.   In fact, I felt a bit like Goldilocks because the massage table, room temperature, and soft background music were all Just Right accompaniments to Whitney's magic hands.

Whether you visit Whitney yourself or purchase a massage for a friend, it's definitely time and money well spent.

Edited to say that Whitney has moved her practice since I posted my review.  I'll be sure to add an update after my next visit.

Whitney is an outstandingly-talented massage therapist.  I enjoy a general, full-body, relaxing rubdown... but Whitney offers something much better.  She can assess, with preternatural accuracy, where there is tension or misalignment that is causing pain and discomfort, and can use a combination of massage techniques and neuro-muscular reprogramming to sort things out so the relief is far more than a temporary "ahhhh."

I had a mild foot sprain that, over time, compounded itself into throwing off my hips and upper back so badly that I could barely walk.  Where another massage therapist might have massaged the places that were directly sore, Whitney worked with my whole body, finding hidden imbalances that were contributing to the source of the problem, rather than just treating the symptoms.  She helped get me functional again in a very brief amount of time, when I was originally in so much pain I had actually broken down and taken a Vicodin at work.

Whits knows her stuff, and is constantly deepening her knowledge of bodywork so she can address her clients' needs.  If you just need relaxation and self-care, she can definitely provide that with great warmth and skill, but for injury, pain, or other acute issues, she is unparallelled.

One of the most conscientious and thoughtful massage therapists I've ever had touch me. I have many musculoskeletal issues--from bad knees to numbness and tingling in my arms to scoliosis. Ms. Moses has gone out of her way to not only address these problems, but to come up with long-term solutions--even referring me to other bodyworkers and learning from them as they worked on me so that her skillset increased.

I go to her whenever I can and recommend her to everyone I know.

Whitney works magic with her fingertips.

In addition to simply being an incredibly kind and caring human being, Whitney is incredibly skilled at making her clients feel at ease and utterly relaxed, and has a very gentle and intuitive touch. Getting a massage from her is like resting on a warm fluffy cloud of bliss and relaxation. Whether you're saddled with an injury or simply stressed the hell out and need a break, Whitney will make it all melt away and help you feel whole again.

Full disclosure- I knew Whitney as a friend before she ever fixed my back. She is my boyfriend's regular massage therapist, and he absolutely feels she is a miracle worker, but massage is usually not in my budget, so I never expected to be able to use her much-lauded skills.
However, I had a terrible back spasm *getting out of my car in front of her house* one night. Just like the engine light going on outside your mechanic! I was literally doubled over with pain.
Whitney immediately sprang into action, though it was 2am on the night of her housewarming party and she must have been exhausted.
She set up her table with fresh sheets, got me lying down and feeling safe and cared for in like 20 seconds. Her client room is peaceful and lovely, and she absolutely understands how to take care of you when you have frightening back pain.
She set to work, and got me fixed up and able to stand up and walk within an hour.
Miracle worker, AND the nicest human you'll ever meet.

Whitney is wonderful! She has been an acquaintance of mine for years and I've always found her to be exceedingly warm, friendly, fun, and talented.

I just went to her for bodywork for the first time last week. I've never had bodywork done, and I've only had professional massages twice before, but I must say she is AMAZING. Very professional, extremely knowledgeable, and her hands work wonders. I recently had a back injury, and I went to her for help with that. She recently started doing Neuromuscular Reprogramming, which is something I was previously unaware of. It is like magic. After an hour long session with her, my back felt much more flexible than it had, and a week later my pain is nearly gone! It's hard to say how much of that is due to what she did and how much is just normal healing, but her working out the tension that had built up in my back due to the injury has definitely helped move things along. Not to mention it felt incredibly good.

Something else I liked a lot was how she told me exactly what she was doing, and educated me about how my body works in the process. It was really interesting to me because I love learning that kind of thing. Plus, it was abundantly clear that she is very knowledgeable about what she's doing: anatomy, musculature, the way the human body works, etc.

I will definitely be going back to Whitney again!

Whitney does a fabulous job; great music, great calming atmosphere, powerful massage with finesse!

I love that she takes notes & keeps track of my progress/needs, and she's excruciatingly well trained. I learn more about anatomy, body mechanics & pressure points every time; which is saying something, since I teach dance at the college level and know bodies pretty dang well!

She's a wonderful soul, and a great worker!

    House calls!!!!

Most of my day is spent hunched over a keyboard.  My back a gnarled mess of unhappy.  Last week I threw out my back but since I was on a business trip I had to navigate hours on a plane and standing around on my feet.

Whitney made it all better and was incredibly flexible about her time.

Best of all I feel sprightly again (and my back is happier).

Whitney is a very good massage therapist. She's caring, professional and inquisitive. She keeps track of her clients' conditions (if they have any) and works with the client's feedback in order to choose the best modality/modalities of treatment. She can work as deeply or as gently as you need.  Unlike some folks who rest on their laurels, Whitney is constantly learning new things and applying the good ones in her practice.

    Whitney ROCKS!

But besides that, she is an amazing massage therapist and body-worker. One of only two people I go to these days, as others just haven't seemed to "get it". They were good, yes - but Whitney goes many steps further and creates a massage distinctly for *you*, and for exactly what your body needs. You'll literally float off of her table when she's through!

Oh, and lucky for us people in San Francisco, she now works in the Mission on Tuesdays and Thursdays, which is just another way she makes our life better...

I encountered Whitney when she was a student in one of the circus aerial skills and conditioning classes that I teach. I liked the idea of being massaged by someone who actually knew, from first-hand experience, what I was doing with my body on a regular basis. So, I had my first massage from Whitney a few years ago and was happy to discover that she has the ability to modulate the intensity of her touch to match my needs (which always vary from one appointment to the next.)

She has since worked in a number of different locations, but I would say that her current location is pleasant and sufficiently private. I have continued to see her through to the present time and, most notably, have benefitted from her thirst for knowledge and passion for the study of the body. Every time I go back to her it seems as if she has just added another tool to her belt!  She utilizes this impressive array of bodywork modalities as needed in any single session, to find the most effective means to provide you with physical relief.

Above and beyond her quality training and natural instincts I believe that Whitney takes her work very seriously. She is 100% committed to using her arsenal of healing techniques to understand what is going on in your body and to help you feel better.  I feel good supporting her as an independent practictioner.

Whitney is the one of the few individuals I trust to work on my body.  She took a great deal of time at our initial meeting to get to know my body in theory before she began her work.  She is very well-versed in different techniques and is able to tailor her work to each individual client's needs at the drop of a hat.
Whitney provides a warm, comfortable and relaxing atmosphere in which to work her healing magic.  She makes sure her clients are comfortable in the environment, offering heating pads and soothing music as an aid to the relaxation process.
I left my first session with Whitney feeling replenished and relaxed and standing up straight for the first time in my life.  I famously exhibit TERRIBLE posture, have had problems with my back, shoulders and knees, and just simply get rather beat up as a result of daily life.

Whitney makes it all better.  :-)

After dealing for many years with multiple auto accident injuries, I saw Whitney for bodywork to try to correct the recurrent pain and clicking in my hip.  A single session of NMR (neuromuscular reprogramming) coupled with some homework she has given me has made an amazing amount of difference in my range of motion, as well as profoundly reduced the pain I was experiencing.

As if this were not enough, she is amazingly gentle, attentive, caring and personable.  Seeing Whitney for bodywork is the best therapeutic thing I've done, hands down.

Whitney gives the best prenatal massage.   If you've ever been pregnant before you know what it's like to carry a disproportionally large amount of weight in the front of your body and the havoc it reeks on your back.  Whitney worked out the aches on my back and all the other areas where I actually felt lighter (if that's even possible with a big belly).  I really appreciated her firm pressure as I have experienced other prenatal massages where I was treated more like a porcelain doll than an achy  mama to be.

Whitney is everything you want in a massage therapist; professional yet affable, she applies considerable talent in tailoring her work to exactly what your body needs.  Each session begins with a quick discussion of how you think your body is doing, and then she proceeds to discover all the little bits you didn't even know were bothering you.

I feel two inches taller on my way out of Whitney's office.

I first came to Whitney as part of an effort to improve my posture and reduce back pain.  She is, without a doubt, the most effective massage therapist I have ever been to.  She has a real wealth of interdisciplinary knowledge and a deep understand of how the body works.

Previously, I have always come away from massages feeling briefly relaxed, but not with any lasting effect.  Whitney has actually helped me understand my body better and introduce real change on how I use it.  It is an amazing thing to feel like I am not constantly fighting my body.

Yay.  She works from home, which is in an iffy part of Emeryville... so don't expect the typical serene spa setting.  But close your eyes and just enjoy the great bodywork.

whitney is a genious. her intuition and impeccable attention to detail is unmatched. i have seen her only twice, but in those two times i have gained a tremendous respect for the level of work she provides, as well as gained so much relief from the physical stress the plagues me on a daily basis. every time i have seen her, i am left with only one thought, "why don't i do this more often?"
i am a hair-stylist, so i'm sure you can imagine how nasty the knots in my shoulders and back are. it sucks. sometimes i want to curl up in a ball it hurts so bad, but somehow whitney can actually make some of my boulder-sized knots calm down. i don't know how she does it, but the girl has a gift.
you can tell she actually loves what she does because it shows. she pays attention to all the tiny details and she has taught me many things about my own body that i never even knew.

whitney is a thoughtful, friendly and intelligent massage therapist and i would highly recommend her.

I'm picky about who I hire to heal me.  I think that good skill is only a start.  Whitney has those skills, and is deeply invested in refining them as a lifelong process.  She is attentive, and targets teh areas most in need based on her clients' histories.

More than that, though, she has a sense of humanism and compassion that lends itself to making a massage more than just relaxing, but deeply healing.  Her magic hands start working my back, and I am rid of old negative feelings that have been locked in.  Buh-bye, baggage!

Whitney is the awesome sauce. As a dancer, personal trainer, and pilates teacher, i work my body really hard daily. Whitney was able to asses my bodies weird kinks and knotted places, as well as imbalances in my musculature, within our first session, after which she made notes so that she could develop a solid plan of attack for getting me all loose, un-knotted, and balanced out. She's organized, uses her time well, professional, and of course, as gentle (or intense, if you like) as can be. I vote yes on Prop Whitney Massage.

Whitney is the best massage therapist I've ever been to.  She's strong enough to actually work out the knots I get.  She listens to me tell her what's sore, then checks it herself to figure out how to best work out the problem.  She also gives useful advice on self-treatment. I feel better for *days* after a massage by Whitney.

The only complaint I have is that she generally keeps a workday schedule, and is popular enough to need booking a little further in advance than I can arrange sneaking away from work to make it in to see her.

I'm pushing my body farther than it should be going--lots of exercise that requires lots of theraputic maintenance. Whitney does amazing work that keeps me active, and comfortable in my body despite punishment from exercise and stress.
Whitney possesses an amazing combination of skill, technique, intuition, and empathy that makes for an great massage that keeps me moving through the world comfortably.
Every appointment is a great experience, and I always walk out feeling wonderful. I've been getting body work for many years, and Whitney is as good as I've seen.

The best massage I've had. Whitney is strong and calming and she she knows exactly what she's doing. She helped get me on the road to healing after my neck had frozen up due to extended tall-person-in-airplane-seat time.
