I took my wife up here for her birthday in Jan 09 during Super Bowl Weekend... yeah I know guys but her B-Day on Superbowl weekend almost every year. Host was excellent. Nice short walking distance to the main part of the city. Accommodations was EXCELLENT.... I would HIGHLY recommend this place to anyone looking to go to Mendocino.
If any of you guys are in the dog house this place will help get you out of it. -

My poor parents wanting to surprise us with this place . Both my parents and me n hubby were disappointed with it . One person checked us in then we never saw him again . The rooms looked great but the hot tub once turned on let out a whole lot of pubes eeewl nasty !!!! I was so grossed out I had a hard time staying the night . No one made break fast or at less coffee . The place was nasty and dirty it went way beyond health codes ! I feel sorry for the next person who wast their hard earned cash on this dump ! Don't go there if you want romance and good service . They cost to much for a night of eewl ! -

Ever have one of those days where everyone in your family calls you every 5 minutes and you discover that your mobster uncle is in the hospital on ventilators and feeding tubes but conscious and should recover, only that doesn't stop your crazy aunt, who is still married to him even though they haven't lived in the same state for 10 years and she has her 20 years younger than her boyfriend living with her in Florida, from running around the hospital yelling at them to pull the plug and to call hospice because this is no way to live and she's going to sue all of them. And your cousin's daughter calls you crying because her mom just called her up and said "Hi honey, listen, Poppi's on life support and dying. Nan is here. They're going to pull the plug. Ok, I've gotta go. Talk to you soon." And your born again cousin with the former coke smuggler husband (also born again) keeps calling everyone to ask if they've convinced your uncle to accept Jesus as his Lord and Savior. And you have to call the hospital and apologize for the insanity. And somehow everyone in your family is looking to you to be the voice of reason, even though you're 3000 miles away. And you decide that you should get away for the weekend and go somewhere that you don't get cell phone service? No? Me neither. My family's normal.
But I still decided to go to Mendocino for the weekend. And it was last minute. And luckily the Whitegate Inn had its vacation rental available (see the website) for a great off season last minute rate. The vacation rental is awesome - it's a main house with three bedrooms and then a guest cottage with a hot tub, sauna, and then a bathroom and another bedroom. It's a great vacation rental, comfortable beds, clean, great location, nice yard, great view of the water from upstairs. Just what the doctor ordered. It's pretty impossible to be stressed out while you're in Mendocino.
The vacation rental is several blocks away from the Inn, but I stopped in there to pick up the keys and it was really pretty. It's in a great old house, it looked very clean and cozy, everyone who worked there was nice, and the gardens were gorgeous. I didn't have the food, so I have no idea what it's like, but everything else there was perfect.
I can't wait to get back up there - and my first choice of lodging will be the Whitegate Inn's vacation rental. So don't rent it when I want to go. Or I'll call my uncle. He's better now.Listed in: Mendocino County Line

The Whitegate Inn is the best place to stay in Mendocino. Not only is it in the center of town but it is the type of Victorian bed and breakfast that makes you truly feel like you've entered another dimension. From the decor, to the laid back vibe to Corky the dog, it is a great place to slow down, unwind and forget about the Bay Area. My girlfriend and I stayed here in August and loved it. We were blessed with remarkable weather and made the most of our stay. Of particular note was Cafe Beaujolais just down the street from the Whitegate. We had a wonderful stroll to and from dinner and fell fast asleep in the feather beds. Breakfast is delicious and it's fun to meet your fellow B&B'ers. All in all a great place in a beautiful town. The perfect weekend getaway.

This place is perfectly charming, and reminiscent of all that I love about Mendocino. You almost feel like you've stepped back in time by staying here, yet everything is beautifully decorated. My room had a view of the ocean, and it was wonderful waking up to that each morning. The owners' dog, Corky, is just as sweet as can be (as are the owners themselves). Breakfast is included with your stay, and it's truly a gourmet experience. Location is great too, as the inn is located right in the heart of the village. Affordable yet elegant, the Whitegate Inn is everything a B&B should be, and more. They really get it right here.

Called to reserve a room today, based on their website ad of "all rooms half price in Jan." I had chosen a room that is listed as $269 year-round. She offered it to me for "$159" on the half price deal (an extra $24 over half price). I gently asked if there was a mistake, citing the ad, and was told, and I quote: "Yes, but the owners don't want to deal with that." I suggested that they take the ad down then, and was told, "No one who has called has had a problem with it; people who have a problem with it should probably stay elsewhere." Then she hung up. Amazing. I run a vacation home. When I post deal, I stick to it.

The cottage was dingy and small. There was a giant lump in the middle of the king size bed. The pillowcases had stains. The breakfasts were a joke-scrambled eggs, fruit and cold toast. Really? Oh, and the breakfast was the same 2 days in a row. No bargain for $230 a night!
