One of my fondest childhood memories was flying out to New Jersey to visit my Auntie. And it was our tradition to stop by the White House for a cheesesteak sub. The first time I flew out from California I was told about these legendary subs and my first though was "what the hell is cheesesteak?" That question was answered very quickly.

This place is just fantastic. There was a long line, but all the people were chatting with each other and having a good time. All of the "Rocky" memorabilia on the walls was awesome to look at while you wait. And the sub itself.......mmmmmmm. I can still remember the piles of hot pastrami and cheeseteak. Not to mention provolone cheese melted to perfection. Hands down the best sub I've ever eaten.
If you haven't been here at least give it a try. I'm definitely coming back here again. I can't navigate Atlantic City worth a crap but I can find this place blindfolded :P

Pros: high quality ingredients (freshest tuna I've had in a sub), large portion size (half-foot sub is equivalent to Subway's footlong), affordable (2 meals for the price of 1), great service (small town diner atmosphere)

Cons: wait (30 minutes minimum)

Tips: order take-out & dine at the park across the street, tip the sub makers $1

Apparently in NJ all you gotta do to be successful is either make a good hot dog, or a great sub.

1. Put this place on your Life To Do List!
2. Take a road trip!
3. Make it happen!

Worth the Trip!
A good story to tell.
A Legendary NJ Food Destination!

This to me is the GOLD STANDARD in cold subs and cheesesteak hoagies!

My profile states this would be my last meal on earth....OH YEAH!  Been going to this place since I was in the womb.

If in AC or near by, it would be a shame not to stop here for a bite to eat  Always worth the wait.  It's no frills served on paper plates.  I always get a cheesesteak with provolone cheese, fried onions, lettuce and tomato.  And then to go, I grab a Regular Sub or a Cap Salami and Cheese.

The truly local people who have been coming here for years tend to also gravitate to the Hamburger, which I must is pretty darn good as well.

"Don't Believe the Hype!"  Those were the words of my DW after we finished lunch at the White House Sub Shop.  I'd have to say I echo her sentiments.  We stood in line for maybe 30 min on a Friday afternoon for Lunch.  The take-out line didn't seem to be much quicker.  You get seated by a grumpy old lady with a mustache who I would gather has been working here since the place opened in the 1940's.

Besides all that the sandwiches were nothing special, all four people in our party all had cheesesteaks.  My DW and I being somewhat connoisseurs of crappy greasy food would easily rank any of the big name Philly joints (Geno's, Steve's etc.) head and shoulders above this place.  I would guess that's why Philly Cheesesteaks, not AC Cheesesteaks have become world renown

The most amusing part of the lunch was looking at the pictures of b-rate celebs that covered the wall.  If you want to be able to tell all your friends that you ate on the same grounds as Mr. T and the Soup Nazi then this place is for you.  If not, there are plenty of good eats in the Casion resto's these days so go and seek out one of those.

Totally don't get it.  Good subs, but the aggravation of waiting in line for a ridiculously long time isn't worth it.  I'd come back on a Thursday at 3:00 or something, but dinnertime on Saturday was pretty ridiculous.

The bread is good, there's no doubt, but nothing else about the sandwiches was special in any way.

You're gonna go and try this place, probably, but I really don't recommend going during peak hours.

Took about thirty minutes to get our orders in but was glad to have tried this place.  Place is located on the outskirts of the AC boardwalk along the corner of two streets (forgot their names).  Their meatball sub was probably the best I've ever tasted (homemade meatballs, fresh sauce, fresh bread delivered across the street from a partner bakery, and nicely melted provolone).  Damn, I'm making myself hungry right now.  Damn, White House, u got me!  East Coast represent!  If ur in AC, it's definitely worth the wait to check this place out.

After spending a financially draining in AC this past weekend, my gf and I decided to cheapen it up a bit and hit a reasonibly priced hot spot. On our way home back to NNJ, we stopped by this supposed "AC Landmark". After parking in a shady area (thank goodness it was daytime and only 11:30am) we stepped into this place. Very small but friendly. The waitress we had was all business (we sat at the counter since all the tables were booked. She ordered the turkey sandwich and I went with ole reliable, cheese steak. She disappointed that they don't have vinegar or oregano for the subs...and yes, it is not a hogie, it's a sub! When it finally arrived after 15 mins (I know their busy but it's a sandwich, not much of a science to it), we took our first bite. As I picked up my sandwich, it fell apart. The bread was good but the rest was on the plate. I like my meat chopped up. Her turkey sandwich was avg.
I gave it 3 stars because it DID NOT exceed my expectations. As a matter of fact, it was below them. Better cheesesteaks at Campos or Tony Lukes, hands down. Better bread at both places. We can get better turkey subs in NNJ at a local sandwich shop.
It was nice though to view all the B rated stars on the wall. Funny at best. The woman at the register is super friendly. The waitress, not so much. It's not cheap either. And believe me, I can understand the philsophy behind the place but totally overrated. Just my 2 cents.

The White House sub shoppe never disappoints with its simple steak and cheese or coldcut Italian sub.  Get it served with the works and don't even think of ruining it with mayo.  They may throw you out if you dare ask for it.  The real secret to these sandwiches is not what's on the inside (although that's pretty darn good) but the bread which is biked or walked over from the Formica Bakery just across the street in the Ducktown neighborhood.  You must take a couple of (what we call "sticks") of bread and a box of assorted cookies home with you.  I have been coming to the White House since I was a kid and drive all the way from Virginia to indulge.  Parking can be difficult on the street but pay parking is available nearby.  Prepare to wait in line as it's busy at peak lunch/dinner hours.  6" subs are fine for most but if you have a big appetite try the foot long.

Took a little detour to stop here since I had a friend tell me "best subs in universe".

NOT.

Like Pizza, beer, and spaghetti that is apparently a matter of opinion.

My opinion? If all the folks that rave about this place had a sub from Capriotti's, Georgio's or anyplace similar in the phila burbs, they might change their mind.

Look - its a good sub. Bread is outstanding. But they can't even comprehend of prosciutto on a Italian sub (hoagie)? Hot peppers were mediocre. no sweet peppers available? com-on....

The meat was generous, but the Italian meat selections were pedestrian IMHO. And the onions were OLD. And we had to wait 45 minutes to get 5 subs while people came and went ordering 1.

So - maybe a decent sub for down the shore, but maybe just barely in my top ten for sub shops in general...

I'm not really a fan of subs but found these sandwiches to be delicious. The secret has to be in the bread, which is delivered daily. I could honestly just sit there and eat the bread and be in carb heaven for the rest of my days...

My advise to anyone is only get a half sandwich. The large is huge! I had to wrap mine up and spend the next two days eating it.

So i'm in Jersey on business. I went to grad school in New Brunswick, so it's not like i've never had the White House Need before.

My stupid training lets out at 4. I'm on the road at 4:05. I'd had nothing to eat all day as the catering was screwed up. I'm at the counter at 5:30 getting a big ol cheesesteak for here, and a Special for later.

Drop sandwich in rental car. Go play penny slots. Win 330 bucks. The next day, i had breakfast and a snack for the night flight home courtesy of my full-size Special.

"Bloody awesome", not just "woohoo! as good as it gets."  Don't miss the tuna if that's your thing.

I went in on random and it looked empty from the outside.

As soon as you walk in, there is a FLOOD of customers waiting to have their order taken, waiting for a pick up order, and seated in nice size booths.

Once again, as with everything else in Atlantic City, it is a blast from the past. Except it doesnt blow back to the 80s here, it vanishes away to the 70s.

I waited 20 minutes and my order was DONE! I had a good 7 people ahead of me and ALL the booths were filled.

There was no look of disgust or surprise or any uneasiness in any of the staff! I was just a PERSON here. Perhaps my new route simply relaxes ME so people can see me as the approachable creature that I am.

I ordered a chicken sub. they literally fried up the raw into cooked chicken. The fried onions added to a rare taste that filled me up and lasted all day into the night.

The only bother was how much paper they wrapped the sub in. I could have covered a table with the paper used. Sitting in my work truck with a huge spill of paper in my hands as my mouth searched for the huge half sub was a site for pedestrians to see.

I would recommend that you eat ONLY here when you FIRST go to Atlantic City.

Fry on.

While we were in Atlantic City, a family member requested that we pick up a few cheesesteaks from here and bring them back to Queens with us.  A little crazy?  Yes.

We got a few cheesesteaks and a White House special to go.  I liked the White House special more than the cheesesteaks.  Granted, I probably would have liked the cheesesteaks more if we ate them there.  The cheesesteak was packed with meat, cheese and onions.  Very nice.  The bread  was pretty good quality and didn't go completely soggy even after the drive.  The White House special was packed with cold cuts although, eating it was a little awkward as the meat kept sliding out as another reviewer mentioned.  But really, did I just read a review that complained about too much meat?  What is this world coming to?

The place is pretty small and I totally botched the ordering protocol.  If you are there for a take out order, head straight to the back and grab a number.  However, i would recommend phoning in your order to avoid the wait.  If you are dining in, you have to wait at the front door.  An alternative to dining in (especially if it is a nice day) is to just order to go, and then head across the street to the tables there and eat outside.

Definitely would recommend checking this place out, but parking can be a pain.  I could only find street parking, not that there was much of it.

unbelievable quality! i was in AC for a week so i went three times.
i had a chicken parm sub one day, a cheese steak another. and a burger too., and they were all perfect.
there is a sign out front that states, the bread they use has no preservatives, and is hand delivered from a bakery across the street up to 12 times a day. so all the buns are the best, and always fresh, very fresh!
there may be a line here though, this is a famous place.

Living on the West Coast now (CA) and having grown up in the east, I am in a constant search for a great sub/hoagie.  I was weaned on them.  While there are many versions and I most prefer the heated type - you know when the bread is toasty and crusty and the cheese is melted and gooey and the lettus is freshly schredded and the onions are thin and the tomatoes are juicy and the oil and vinegar is splashed all over!  OMG I'm getting off here . . . back to Whitehouse.

I saw this place on the Food Channel and read about it in Gourmet.  Finally made it there and it was nirvana.  My friend and I ordered a Whitehouse special and a Cheesesteak and shared each in half.  Both were absolute sandwich bliss.   This is a place so worth visiting the food is great and the place is just what you'd expect for a fun local restaurant.  It was so good, we went back the next day and I expect we'll be back again.  There are a couple restaurants there on the Jersey shore worth the 3000 mile trip.

Ever in SW Pennsylvania on RT 119 near Uniontown (Lemont Furnace) there is a Italian joint called 'Angelo's'.  They have the most awesome hot-hoagie you'll get anywhere.

The gold standard for subs in South Jersey.

There's a reason that tiny, poorly decorated restaurants with no parking are constantly PACKED:  the food

They pack the subs with good quality meats & cheeses, the bread is top quality, and despite the long lines, the service is quick.

Like Pink's in Los Angeles, Pat's in Philadelphia or Katz Deli in New York..White House is a place that needs to be visited when you're in the area.

I was nervous to 'Yelp' this spot until I realized that a handful of 2 and 3 star stragglers do already exist so, to you all, I join your club. The minute people heard we'd be in AC, they begged and pleaded we pick them up what we could, and drive it 4 hours back home for them. That, to me, said "Hell to the yeah, I'm gonna get me a damn good sub". After a sad night of gambling, thinking AC is the devil but also knowing I'm just a crappy roulette and blackjack player, we found ourselves on Arctic Avenue with some of our friends orders in-hand and excited to experience this famed establishment. Not able to decide what we wanted, we ordered a half Italian, half tuna and  half cheesesteak. Figured between the 4 hour drive back and not wanting to cook dinner upon getting home, this was perfect.  Ok, folks, I'm sorry but drive up to Northern NJ and try Lakeside in Verona or Millburn deli in Millburn! This sub shop is not the very best place in the world! We took our number and waited and waited...and waited I will say that even after being there for 40 minutes, the experience itself was cool to be a part of. The employees are fun; talking up the football scores, laughing at some of the silly orders they've gotten so far that day and the atmosphere has a neat vibe to it. It's obvious this place has a great reputation based on the line to order or be seated. Although if we had known, we would have called ahead and ordered for pick up! Once it was our turn to order, I was so nervous! Didn't want to mess up and be the next laughable story but I got it on the first try and watched as our guy worked his magic. Armed with $50+ of food, we headed out of town and once we hit the highway, took a bite out of the cheesesteak. What we didn't realize was that this would be the highlight. It was decent, but really? We've had better. Next up? The tuna. Who makes tuna without mayo? That's like having a PB&J without the peanut butter. Meh, it was gross. I wrapped it back up and plan on re-making it when we get home. I kid you not. The only reason it's worthy of a remake is b/c the bread is fresh and shouldn't be ignored. Last up? The italian. Considering our neighbor asked us to grab 2 whole ones for him, I thought we were in for a tasty treat. Not the case. Dare I say, you can get a better Italian sub at Potbelly's? Whomever wants to strike me down as a person with bad taste, so be it. But, if you've grown up in Northern NJ, there is no reason to venture south. Save the gas money and show your current fave place some more love. Sorry to the employees, you made it worthwhile, but if I come back to give the devil my money at the black jack or roulette tables, I won't be sharing the wealth with the White House sub shop.

Prepare for a wait at this small, corner sub sandwich shop, especially if you plan on eating in as there are only a few tables. We ordered the House Special, Roast Beef Sub, and Regular Italian Sub and we didn't start digging into it until 4 hours later when we got back in North Jersey. And it was so good, the meat was flavorful and generous, layers of salami, ham, provolone cheese, with lettuce, tomatoes, peppers and pickled seasoning. We were thinking of the cheese steak when we ordered the roast beef and thought it was the same, but thankfully the roast beef is no disappointment. The prices are cheap too. The sandwich sizes are either "half" for $6-7 and "whole" $12-13 but a half easily satisfies a hungry person. Now If only there's a neighborhood sandwich shop like this where I live.

She Said..." So once again, i was expecting much more from this place. I got the white house special, and it tasted like an average italian sub expect bigger...which is not always a better thing. The bread was hard, too much meat, and way too filling. I probably didnt like the sub as much because i saw the man made it...had the same gloves on from probably the time he started his shift, he was touching raw meat in between his sub making, wiping his gloves off on a dirty sweaty wet rag that was wrapped around his waist, wiping the counters off with his hands fast and then taking the sub roll, patting it down and then started making it....yeah almost made me throw up. I will not go back here."

He Said..."Yea we waited in line for 10 minutes before we realized the line was to eat inside. We decided to skip that madness because the wait was about 45 minutes to get inside, so instead we ordered takeout...So after another 30 minutes of waiting we decided to get the "White House Special"...When someone wears gloves to make your sandwich you would think they are more clean, well after touching bloody raw meat he decided to make our lackluster sandwich. We went back to Bally's and ate our "special" the only thing special about was that we didn't get food poisoning. The sub tasted okay, if that. They are very old school here and the place is small and the workers look like they are working at a sweatshop. The only reason I would go back is to try the philly cheesesteak but then again I may not."

I have been going to Atlantic City for years and years.  I had read many times about the famous White House Sub Shop.  On my most recent trip the timing worked out that we would be able to get there just before the lunch rush.

I had the White House special cold sub.  Salami, ham, capicolla, provolone, lettuce, tomato, diced hot peppers and plenty of oil.  Our prep guy tore most of the guts out of the freshly baked bread.  All of the ingredients were very fresh.

It is a good sandwich...but nothing special.  Maybe I am spoiled by similar sandwiches in small Italian delis in north Jersey but White House was just mediocre at best.

I would go back to try one of the hot subs but would certainly not wait in any of the infamous lengthy lines to do so.

One star for nostalgia and one star for the fresh bread.

A staple of any visit to AC, White House is where you take your winnings to get yourself a sandwich clearly designed for a king, or where you hang your head and enjoy the fact you can still afford this delicious blend of meat, bread, and "put 'em on yourself" condiments.

White House Special?  Amazing.  Meatball Sub?  Heard it described as "the best meatballs ever" by some folks who know what they're talkin' about.  The Cheeseburger sub is a reason to eat here even if you're not in the mood for deli.

When you say "I'm hungry, I can eat a whole one," you either don't know or you're lying.  It's not fooling me.  I picked up a bag of 10 sandwiches to bring back to a party and it must have weighed 40lbs.  I've never seen people so happy to see their sandwiches delivered.

Definitely call ahead; the line can be brutal.  They wait to make the sandwiches until you get there regardless of call ahead, but it's worth it just to get bumped to the front of the assembly line as soon as you get there.

I use to come to White House Sub a lot when I was working in AC. I haven't been back much, but they never seem to disappoint me. I always order the cold sub --- usually the Italian special. They stuff their subs like crazy and to make more room, they dig out the inside of the breads.

I heard their cheesesteaks were good too. I have to try that someday! I hope they haven't change much since I last went there.

I had 1/2 a cheesesteak, it was pretty good, not really worth the hype though.

The decor is really cool and I could look at it for a long time all the cool pictures.

I also had a 1/2 italian special. The special comes with extra salami. This sandwich wasn't that great, the meat was placed in a way that every time I took a bite the meat would squeeze up and out of the sandwich.

expect to pay about $7 for a half which is actually pretty large. And about $12 for a whole sub.

They close about 8 on weekdays and 9 something on weekends

Since the first time I ate here about 7 years ago, I've been trying to figure out what all the fuss was about.  I'll occasionally go there with friends from out of town who want to try it, and each time I hope to be impressed...that's never the case.

I mean, the subs aren't bad, but they're just not good.  The rolls are way too hard for my taste, and they don't taste any better than any other place I've ever had one.  I'm sure I'll get flak for saying this - but I even enjoy a Wawa sub more than these things.  Hell, at least Wawa will put mustard on my sub if I order it that way, rather than handing me mustard packets.

Aside from the subs themselves, the place always has ridiculous lines to even walk in the front door, and when you finally do, the place is old, tiny, and dingy.  It's downright embarrassing.  How could a business this popular not spring for a decent looking shop?  The staff isn't friendly, and whenever I'm there, I can't wait for it to be over with.

For some reason, this place has it's history and some undeserved reputation, which is the only reason it's as popular as it is.  I could name a dozen places in the area that have much better subs than this place, and you won't have to deal with the lines or a dingy place to boot.

I grew up in Philly and I have never been a fan of cheesesteaks or hoagies. I've tried cheesesteaks many times, from the classic Geno's and Pat's to the hole in the wall joints that people swear by. Meh. Something about chopped up steak meat that doesn't move me. I can't get that Steakumm image out of my head.
Anyway, my future husband raved about this place the last time we hit A.C. and insisted I try one just this once.
Well - I was beyond surprised. This tiny rinky-dink joint full of Sinatra  pictures gave me a cheesesteak with provolone that almost made made me cry tears of joy. The meat? No Steakumm there! The cheese? A sharp provolone clearly made with love. And the roll?
A soft on the inside, crusty on the outside vehicle of awesomeness that housed the meat and cheese better than I ever could have imagined.
So yeah, I liked it. And it's likely the only place I'll ever eat a cheesesteak.

The White House has all the makings of a classically great little food place in my mind. They've been around forever. They get their bread from across the street. Some of the same guys work there who worked there a million years ago. I am in love with places like this, places that can hang around for a really long time and never change, because they do something extraordinarily well, and hey, why change?

They make hoagies, or subs, and they make them huge. If you order a whole sandwich, be prepared to take some of it home, as they pack an extraordinary amount of meat into these things. I mean, this meal really has two parts: one when you're sitting down in the booth or on your stool, then one later when you realize you still have half a sandwich in the fridge. That's a particularly fond realization for me. It has all the magic of Christmas morning.

All in all, what you have here is the old Atlantic City, directly abutting the new Atlantic City, still hanging on and feeding people as it's done for decades. If you're in town for some reason or another, you owe it to yourself to stop by, have a sandwich, and enjoy a genuine eatery in a land of chain restaurants and simulated ambiance.

Great sandwich experience. Lock the car, go with the Italian, and eat in the "park". Classic.

If you are in Atlantic City and looking for lunch, you HAVE to go here.  Hands down one of the best cheesesteaks I've had. The pepper cheesesteak I ordered was great.. I'm not sure exactly what it was, but all my toppings such as lettuce and tomatoes tasted A LOT better than usual. What makes it even more convincing is I wasn't that hungry going into the Sub Shop! I've had a Philly cheesesteak from Pat's before and most people say this place is a lot better, but I think they are totally different. I like both.. but in the end, White House wins my vote.

The workers there are busy busy busy because this place is almost always packed. Make sure you know what you are ordering because they can be impatient if you take your time trying to figure out what you want. The place is full of memorabilia of celebrities that have visited in the past.. and a lot of the pictures date to more than 50 years ago which is pretty neat.

The best cheesesteaks in Philly are actually in AC.

I've tried every shop in the city and every combination imaginable.  White House has the BEST straight up cheesesteak.

The textbook definition of a good sandwich. I have been going here since I was a kid and there are few places that can compare to this. The Whitehouse Special is something that I want to be buried with it's just that good. Anyone who says otherwise that this place is no good is crazy or has a piss poor taste in food.

This place has one of the best subs one the planet. PERIOD!!!!  If you like an Italian hoagie and are in the area stop in and get one, you wont regret it.  One of the key parts to any sub is the roll.  The rolls are extremely fresh because the bakery is right across the street and the rolls are brought in fresh on a continuous basis one or two shopping bags at a time.

After finding this place on the Yelp app on my iPhone (glad they thought of this!) and reading all the great reviews, I had to find out for myself if it was worth it.

Fantastic steak and cheese subs.  Even if you're a big eater, a half sub should do the trick as it is about the same size as a full size sub would be at most other places.  A full size sub is great to split for 2-3 people, or one person if you are a competitive eating champion.

The bread is amazing; chewy, soft, fresh, and honestly one of the best parts of the sandwich.  Another is the toppings.  I got mine with the works which consists of lettuce, tomatoes, onions, mayo, hot peppers, maybe some more stuff I don't remember because I was too busy stuffing my face.  If you are getting your food to go, you can stand right at the counter and watch them top your sub.

The meat is grilled fresh per order - no big piles of meat on the grill waiting to be shoved into a waiting sub.  While this guarantees you won't have meat on your sub that has been sitting on the grill for awhile, it does add to your wait time for your sub to be ready.

Being a noob, I waited an hour for my takeout order to be ready.  My best advice is to either try calling in your order ahead of time or arriving during off peak hours - we showed up during the lunch rush.  If you are just getting your food to go, don't bother getting in the long line outside.  You go inside and get a number and wait inside until that number is called to place your take out order.  The line outside is just for people waiting to be seated.  If you aren't keen on waiting in the long ass line to eat in, you can take your food to go and sit in the park across the street.

Perhaps I am biased by all the glowing reviews on White House Subs (and it's not just from Yelp) - but they made us some terrific sandwiches!

A "half" order is actually about a foot long.  I ordered the chicken cheese steak and it was just the right amount of chicken and cheesiness; the bread was awesome.  My boyfriend got the White House Special, another foot-long that spilled over with tasty Italian cold-cuts and onions.

You will probably encounter a line at the door and inevitably - there will be a line at the counter.  But it's worth it.  The service was still pleasant and quick considering the crowds.

This is one of the best sub or Italian places in South Jersey.  The food is incredible.  It is well worth a 30 minute trip to Atlantic City.  It will probably be the best experience in eating at a sub shop that you will ever experience.
