Ok, I'll say it.  I love the big corkscrews you pass on the way in.  These things are friggin ginormous!  HUUUUUGE corkscrews towering into the sky on either side of you as you enter into the winery property.

Once you're in, though, the tasting room is a really small building.  They have a nice porch to relax, but the tasting room itself is very small.  I like how all of the wines have the Meteor name and label with the whole cosmic theme to them.

The wines are all pretty par... the Midnight is the best wine on the tasting list.  It's a well done chambourcin.

The place also has one of the coolest port-o-potties that you will ever encounter.  I'm serious.  Use it.  It's cool.

I give this two stars vs. one star only because (1) our service was very unfriendly and rude, but I'm sure other people who work there are pleasant and (2) I like the quirky grounds and I just love wineries in general.  The drive into the winery is fun - huge corkscrews flanking the entrance and the baby wines (aka grapes) are planted right by the drive.  As you walk up to the tasting room entrance, they have little plaques describing the different varietals that they source for their wines + you can stroll through the vines and look at them. Cool!

Then things go downhill.  The service was SO rude!  The woman was rushing us (like trying to pour more wine in our glass before we'd halfway finished the previous pour), didn't ask whether we'd prefer to sit down and linger while we drink the wine (as she did with other patrons), and was completely unresponsive to our expressed dissatisfaction.  Silly lady!  We would have purchased wine and I would have yelped positively if you'd pulled the stick out of your a**!

Service aside, I didn't want to spit the wine out, but it was nothing special.  Wine is so much about a sense of place and the experience...and this wine would have tasted better if the experience had been more lovely.

Overall, White Fences left a bad taste in my mouth - literally and figuratively.

Could one day be a good place. Its not bad now, but its got a lot of room for growth.  Its really hard to find.  So, once you get there, you really want something fantastic.  Its an odd place.  A sort of shack in the middle of a field.  The area to enjoy a glass is well put together.  That's a good part.  The bathroom, well, its basically just a porta potty behind a door attached to the shack.  Weird.

The tasting room is tiny and if more than one group wants a tasting, its hard to manuever.  The wine is ok.  They make a good Chardonel... although Chardonel isn't really much of a grape.  They make a good merlot, and a decent chambourcin.  Then, that's about it.  Worth stopping by, as it is one of the best places in the area.

One weird thing, they are all about Meteors.  Ok great... why?  Was there a meteor showere here? I have no idea, I guess its just a gimmick.

I was introduced to this winery at the Urbanna Oyster Fest during the first Weekend in November 2006. I gave away both a red and white to two separate couples.  Both folks found the wines very mild and drinkable.

Irvington sits on the mouth of the Rappahanock River and the Chesapeake Bay off US 17 near Tappahanock, VA.  One of the best getaways for DC folks is the Hope & Glory Inn and Irvington  (http://www.hopeandglor...).

I will echo Rebecca C's comments, as she was one of my guests for the weekend that prompted her unflattering review of White Fences. I spend a lot of time in White Stone and was astonished by the sour customer service stingily proffered by the cold woman behind the counter. I will never bring my (generally affluent/wine-loving) friends to this vineyard again. There is plenty of attitude where we live during the week, thanks.

So sad to hear that this winery is closing - but can't find out why! We loved the porch where we always sat and enjoyed a bottle of Meteor Bright White - our absolute favorite. We even attended a wine pairings event one evening and the food was great paired with their wines in a lovely intimate, candlelight setting in the country.
