I know the name is not exactly original. However, regardless of that lapse in judgment, this place is super cute. The ice cream isn't the best in St. Louis but what it lacks from Ted Drew's it makes up for in ambiance. The ice cream shop is actually an old train station, and you can sit and watch the trains go by while you hang out and eat your ice cream. They have sandwiches and salads (I think) too, but the ice cream shop is the main draw. The concretes are pretty good but the shakes are my favorite. You will feel very "Pleasantville" hanging out in this establishment with your shake/float watching the trains pass...I'm telling you, this place is all ambiance.
There's also a little museum inside about a history of Ferguson I believe (don't hold me to that, I have not looked at this stuff once, but I know it's there). In short, stop by if you are in Ferguson...no other place like it.
Whistle Stop is one of those places serving up decent sandwiches, soup, and custard in a gimicky fashion that may be cute for some but simply gets a "huh?" from me.
Shortly after posting that North County list, I was told that Whistle Stop was a must try spot. It seriously is an old train stop with a mini-museum and apparently, there's a telegraph club that meets up here every so often. It's quaint. It's cute.
It kind of irks me.
The whole ordering and getting a "ticket" and waiting for your "passenger number" being called complete with bell bothered the heck out of me. We were the only ones in the place and you still insisted on this? But you know what, running on principles isn't a bad thing at all, especially when you're offering daily specials that include a sandwich/wrap, soup/salad, a drink, AND some custard for just above 7 bucks.
The food was decent (seriously nothing special about anything, even the custard) but it definitely made me look forward to finding more things that North County has to offer.
This is a wonderful north county gem that is easily overlooked. The restaurant is in a restored Wabash Railroad Depot and it's very fun. What makes the Whistle Stop worth a visit is that the food served there is not the run of the mill stuff you see at other restaurants. It seems that most of the menu items are either created by the staff there or interesting variations on a common theme. For example, I'm a soup man and they have had alternatively Broccoli Cheese Soup, Asparagas Soup, Mushroom Soup, etc. not something you see at most restaurants. The salads are also interesting twists accented with fruits or nuts that you would not expect. I think the custard is very, very good and worth a visit all by itself.
The staff is friendly, helpful, and gracious. One of my favorite things to do is host parties there and have had three birthday parties which were just a lot of fun. Since the Ford plant closed, there is not nearly as much train traffic as has been there in recent years but you may get lucky and see a big freight rumble by. Definitely on my list of restaurants to visit again!
Great place for sandwiches and frozen custard. Housed in the Ferguson Depot Museum - learn all about this history of this interesting community. Great county bike trail nearby connects back to UMSL and Metrolink.summer concert series oudoors and kids' birthday parties are also fun here.
