it's a very small museum. they have the lil phone thing to punch in the number to listen about each artifact. it's really sad to hear about the whales but its a very good learning experience.
its free education! if you want to see the skeleton of a whale you have to walk in the mall area to see it. I thought it would be in the museum part but it's not.
A mall museum - right in the heart of Lahaina Town - where you can learn a bit about whaling and Hawaaian History. Worth a look -especailly for tourists.
It is so sad that so many were killed. I am not sure if I would take my 4 year old here - but for an older child it is important to learn about whales - and all creatures - and to preserve and conserve nature.

If you love whales you will hate this place because it chronicles the history of the center of South Sea whaling ships and their industry. Lahaina was the on and off jumping place for so many ships off to kill whales.
And now Maui is the center of whaling cruises designed to honor these great mammals. Isn't that ironic?
They show you here about all of the boats, spears, harpoon and cutting up of whales after they were caught. It is a quick and extensive education for anyone. Glad I went here.
Personally, I think everyone who goes on a whale-watching cruise should come here and everyone who comes here should go on a whale watching cruise, they go together like a hand and glove. Good and bad.

Well, as a museum about whaling, it's pretty interesting. I'm not that interesting in the subject of whaling or whaling history, but we just came by because we were in the area. It's in a busy shopping/resort area with many tourists. If you love whales or have kids I might advise against going to the museum because it might be unpleasant (depends, I guess). I would definitely not recommend coming here just for the museum unless you are really interested in the subject.

The Whaling Museum in Ka'anapali is a fascinating place to learn about the history of whaling. These exhibits will educate you as to how the Pacific whaling industry actually operated in real life.
The forecastle of a whaling ship has been recreated, where 25 men lived cramped together for voyages that lasted as long as five years. Other exhibits include old photos, drawings, and etchings depicting whaling life, antique ornaments and utensils made from whale ivory and bone, and one of the world's largest scale models of a whaling ship. Self-guided audio tours are available in different languages.
The museum also has a prized collection of 19th century scrimshaw--pictures finely carved on whale teeth and bone, then rubbed with ink to bring out the design. The sailors would do it to pass the time on the long voyages. If this type of art interests you, they have a nice gift shop.
Strangely, the museum is located right in the shopping mall, so after visiting it, also visit "Malibu Shirts" on the upper level. It's a t-shirt store, and veritable museum of the history of surfing assembled from the owner's private collection of vintage surfboards and memorabilia.

What a fun place! A little museum about the whaling history of the islands. We were there during the whale season, so its a little sad to think these beautiful creatures were hunted. But the museum is a wonderful and fast education of the history of whaling. They even have an audio tour you can take and of course some souvenirs you can buy!
