5 reviews for Wet Spot Tropical Fish
We recently acquired two platy fishies in a very small tank from a friend. Feeling sorry for them, we got a larger tank on ebay for a great price with free shipping.
Upon unboxing our new tank last week, we realized that we needed "stuff" to make it look nice. It looked kinda ugly with the few plants we had. I knew I wanted some bigger plants to make it look less bare, so I traveled near and far in my search for a decent selection of artificial aquarium plants; I went to Petco, which had a very small selection and nothing to my liking. I went to Pets on Broadway. Again, a small selection and nothing to my liking.
It was then that I remembered driving by an obscurely-located tropical fish store on a side street off Sandy.
Last Saturday, I stopped by The Wet Spot, hoping for a vast selection of artificial plants, and sure enough, I found them. There were two walls filled floor-to-ceiling with all sorts of artificial plants.
After I got my plants, I browsed the store, noticing the huge selection of fish...freshwater and saltwater. There is also a large selection of aquariums, accessories, and everything you could possibly need for your tank.
Service was friendly at the register, but I noticed customers having to hunt down salespeople for assistance with the fish, as the sales associates were not inclined to approach people. It seemed that the sale associates were very knowledgeable about fish care however, as I overheard associates educating customers about chlorine removal/water conditioning, types of fish food, etc.
We are currently waiting for our new tank to cycle before we add our two fish, and we plan to acquire a few more more fishies after our aquarium is fully operational.
When we get ready to buy more fish, we will surely return to The Wet Spot, as the fish selection is quite extensive.
My mother recently purchased fish from this store and was treated VERY poorly by one of their employees. I will not be returning here to care for my tank and I will spread the word.
My mom went in Sunday to buy more fish for her tank. One of their saleswomen sold her four sick fish. My mom told the woman that the fish looked distressed and she replied that they were just "stressed". My mom, not being the expert and trusting the salesperson, bought the fish. Before she got the fish in the door, one was dead. She read the policy, called the store and proceeded to return the dead fish along with a sample of her tank water. Please keep in mind that the fish was NEVER put in the tank...it died before it got to the house. My mom thought that bringing the water in would be a good idea because she doesn't have a new test kit.
When she came in, the same salesperson insisted on testing her water at the store (remember this is the water THAT THE FISH WAS NEVER IN) and shared snide comments with the gentleman that tested the water. After the test this woman proceeded to demean my mom by telling her how bad her water was and how she was surprised that all of her fish weren't dead.
I so badly feel like I'm in grade school and someone said, "Yo momma!". I could take this to the streets and get really hood with it but that would be less than civilized.
Basically these people know "JACK" about aquariums and care of our tropical friends. They should be reported for allowing illness in a tank and proceeding to sell the critters anyway without treatment.
I won't be back and I won't let any of my siblings continue to buy from here.
Boo! Boo! Boo!
I read Gail's negative review and I'm sorry she had such a negative experience with the staff here. I've noticed that when they get quite busy I can feel a bit hurried to get a move on by the staff myself, but in general that has not been my experience.
Overall, my experience with the Wet Spot has been quite positive. I might be tempted to give a three star review based on a few things that point out below, but their selection keeps me at 4 stars.
The loooowwww down:
Fish variety - The Wet Spot only sells freshwater fish. And they have more kinds of freshwater fish available than any other store in Oregon. Huge store, lots of tanks, almost never see any dead fish. Great variety and things you don't often get to see in the hobby. This is a GREAT store to window shop while you plan your tank. 5.5 stars for variety.
Prices - On the fish the prices are pretty good. Plants are a good price too. Usually have good aquarium specials running if you need to buy an actual aquarium. Supplies like filters, etc... are overpriced compared to stores like Petco. They are much more expensive here.
Staff - The few times I have needed advice I've gotten quality advice from nice people here. A few times they've seemed hurried, but in general they take the time to help me pick the right fish for me or find that variety I am looking for. All seem knowledgeable about the industry.
I've never had any issues with fish from here being sick or dieing in suspicious ways.
I don't doubt the other reviewer got bad service on that day, but I've shopped here 5 or 6 times and I haven't noticed it as a trend myself.
PS - they do will adopt fish you no longer want but will NOT give you store credit for them.
I am shocked at the previous negative reviews. I came straight home from The Wet Spot to RAVE about how we were treated.
We had a long, ugly evening of flushing our fish after changing out the tank and SOMEONE forgetting to add conditioner. Needless to say, my children were horrified and I made a promise with each & every flush that we would go get more fish and this time...conditioner too.
We have had the WORST experiences (yes...more than one..we have given them several chances) with snobby/useless staff at Pets on Broadway (completely confused with why people flock there) and we decided to try out a new place.
The gentleman that helped us gave us ALL of his attention, listened to my children and I closely about where the tank was located, what fish would work best, etc. The shop was busy and if he needed to leave us to greet others, he was apologetic and kept returning to make sure we were still doing well.
The gal that rang us up was equally as kind. She was flip and kind of grungy looking, but informative and businesslike depsite her appearance. I realized that people working in a fish store probably shouldn't arrive to work in three piece suits....
I WILL return to this fish store. I was pleased with the entire experience.
ew
really?
thank you, no.
