Riverside County, CA
*review is for Sonoran Spa only *
I was invited here by my mom to join her for her prescheduled facial & mani/pedi service. I walked in without an appointment and the friendly receptionist fit me in for a mani/pedi (with their on-call manicurist) at the same time as my mom. The vibe at this spa is very zen, very peaceful with low lighting and calming music in the waiting area and dressing room. The nail room is brighter and not as quiet, as expected. Great service and friendly staff. Prices are moderate, not like the more upscale resorts in the area. Manicure and pedicure were pretty good, so I'd most likely return. -

A once decent hotel, now quickly fading. There's a reason why they are offering discounts here-and they're not worth it. Not only are the unyielding and unwilling to make any accommodations, but quality is going down fast. I have stayed here twice, and might have stayed again-however they were unwilling to make any changes to my reservation which was prepaid-even though they had nothing but openings. Business travelers beware!
All of us have had to change a reservation for business reasons, and I've been in this very situation many times. Marriott, Hilton, even private hotels have been completely willing to change the date. They do this because they value their customers-and show flexibility. They get paid either way-and build goodwill which where I work is good for business. They don't do that here-just because I don't feel like it. Pretty puzzling -

I was here for a meeting and did not stay overnight, but thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
The grounds are gorgeous and well kept. Two staff members I encountered were very cordial; two others, not so much. But the grounds are gorgeous. I don't know how I feel about one of the pools being plunked down right in front of the fine dining restaurant and outdoor seating area. But other reviewers present good justification for this.
I do enjoy my prickly pear chicken burger. It was delicious. Granted, it took me a minute to get over the neon pink-colored spread on the sandwich. Still, quite good. Nice, plump bun with juicy, well-cooked meat. Nice presentation, too.
I'll have to come back for a stay. -

Beautifully appointed rooms, very friendly staff, gorgeous views and a great price for this type of a resort. Would definitely go back if I'm ever in the Tucson area again.

I was really surprised with the rooms at Westward Look. They are huge and really nice. I love the fact that the shower and toilet are separated from the sink and mirror. The bed was comfortable and we had a pleasant stay even if it was just for one night. Front desk staff were nice and helpful.
The property is beautiful. Our room had a great view and and outside patio where we could sit.
I can't wait to come back for a staycation!Listed in: My northside faves, Home Away from Home

The room was really nice! You could easily block out all the sun. The staff was always pleasant to deal with. When I arrived at 3am, I was driven to my room by a very nice guy.
At brunch the eggs benedict was probably one of the top 3 I've ever had in my life. It was really incredible.
I would recommend booking via the phone, the website seems out of sync with what they actually had available. I was booking with a wedding group and the website said they were out of availability but they weren't. -
Review from Monica J.
My husband and I stayed here overnight last weekend while visiting friends in Tucson. It was a short stay but well worth the money, especially since we were able to get a $99 staycation rate. I'm not sure what the rates are when it is not the off season, but the resort is worth at least double that.
We didn't take advantage of the spa, golf or horseback riding but we did walk the nature trails around the property and it was very enjoyable. I loved the fact that they had some of the trees and cacti labeled for the benefit of out-of-state visitors. Even though it was a short loop (less than a mile) and an easy walk, they also had places to stop and sit so that you could rest or just admire the surroundings. The map of the property that they gave us at check-in also had more information about the vegetation and animal life you could see on the trails and some history of the area; it was very interesting. The whole property was beautifully landscaped; they have really done a great job of cultivating everything so that there is plenty of color and life but it is all native plants so it all blends in with the surrounding mountains, which I believe are a state park. I also really enjoyed the chef's garden with all the herbs and vegetables. They had a lot more there than I thought could be successfully grown in the desert!
All the staff we dealt with during our stay were great. Everyone was very friendly and helpful with the exception of the receptionist at the spa that I spoke to on the phone prior to our visit. She could not adequately explain all their pedicure options to me and the website did not give full information. Also, apparently they require a credit card and you are charge the full price if you don't cancel within four hours. Since I was not sure exactly when I would be able to make it due to our tight schedule, I opted just to skip it. But the conversation itself left a really bad impression since the person I spoke to had very poor communication skills and did not seem to know a lot about their products, services and policies. She put me on hold three times during the short conversation... I am assuming to ask other people the questions that I was asking her.
The pool areas were nice, but not as cool as other resorts (I guess I am mostly comparing to Scottsdale/Phoenix here since I haven't stayed at too many resorts in Tucson). The main pool had a couple of cabanas without any real amenities and they did not have an adult only pool. I did love the fact that they offered food and drink service at all the pool areas. That is a big perk for both families whose kids may need a snack after swimming and those of us dinks who enjoy a frozen cocktail while sunbathing. The Lookout Bar and Grill (LBG) makes some pretty good drinks. They had Blue Moon on tap which is a plus. Inside the bar, there is a great view with wall to wall windows and they were setting up for some live music when we were there on Saturday night. The main restaurant, Gold, also had fantastic views and was very tastefully decorated with Native American art work and Spanish Colonial decor, although the furniture was little worn. As other reviewers have mentioned the free breakfast buffet was a joke. The food options were limited and the quality mediocre. The bread items were not homemade. But I heard from other guests that the food off the menu was much better. They also served dinner but we were not there long enough to give that a try.
The best part about the resort, other than the location and scenery, was the rooms. They were spacious and well designed. I really liked the decor as well. Though the popcorn ceilings needed an update. And I agree with the other reviewers that I missed having a bathtub. But the beds were extremely comfortable. I don't know what it was about that bed but I slept like a log. I loved the down comforter and feather pillows. They felt so luxurious! Another big omission was the lack of a ceiling fan. My husband was complaining about the a/c not working properly but I really think that if there had been a fan it would have been fine. When the air conditioning was on it was very cool in the room but when it cycled off the air in the room felt stagnant and warm even though the temperature on the thermostat said 70 degrees. We were there during monsoon season, so maybe the humidity had something to do with it.
Overall, I would stay there again if it was convenient to do so and I could get a good rate. But it is not one of the best AZ resort experiences that I have had. -

Chocolate nachos!!! Need I say anymore?!
Okay, okay, yes I do. There was so much that I loved and enjoyed about staying at Westward Look. I was lucky enough to stay in one of the private casitas right around the main pool (not the one that has 6-8 others in the same building). The room was very spacious, the mattress was uber soft, and the bathroom was wonderful! I felt like I was on a vacation even though I was there for business. It was incredibly relaxing and nice to return to my room each night after a full day of work.
The only problem I had was that the down comforter was too hot for me! I had to wake up in the middle of the 2nd night to keep adjusting the AC, but finally just threw off the comforter. I wish I didn't have to though, because that comforter made me feel like I was sleeping in a cloud. During the nights when I was unwinding and it was too late to go out with friends, I stayed in and watched TV on the flat screen. It was a nice touch! My little patio (that wasn't really private) was nice to have a good little read too.
They had these wonderful massage chairs in the lobby that I wish I could have just slept in! I'm not sure how my friends pulled me away from it when we went to dinner each night. Unfortunately, I found out they cost $1,000 or so and I wouldn't be able to ever get one of my own.
The grounds are gorgeous and incredibly serene! They had a chef's garden, horse trails, and walking trails gave the feel that we didn't really have to leave to entertain ourselves. Even though it feels secluded, it is still close to many restaurants and civilization.
Did I mention the chocolate nachos yet?! -

Does anyone else find it a bit of a scam when a hotel charges a "resort fee" that is only disclosed at check-in? When that kind of relationship is established at the first staff interaction it is difficult to trust anything at this hotel. Guests are not rubes. They are customers. Threat your customers like rubes and someday you will only have rubes for customers.
I'm afraid that anything I might say about this hotel would be viewed as sour grapes, so I will just say this: Tucson is a terrific place with lots of great resort hotels. We love the Arizona Inn, the Hitlon El Conquistador and Loews Ventana Canyon.Comment from Craig W. of Westward Look Resort 4/25/2011

Awesome summer deal - we stayed in a King Suite for $109/night, including brunch for 2. The room was great - very spacious and comfortable. Live plant on the table was a nice touch. The bathroom looked lovely, but was a little disappointing. No bathtub, and the shower was wimpy and lame - not adjustable at all. The pool areas were great - we stayed during the week right before Labor Day, and there was hardly anyone there, making for a relaxing holiday.
I was excited for the free breakfast buffet - as it was at Gold, I expected a little more that the usual hotel fare. I was disappointed. Fruit was frozen, Eggs were instant, pastries packaged, home fries were standard boring frozen potatoes. Hard to complain when it is free (and the staff was really great), but we decided to go somewhere else and pay for breakfast the next day.
The grounds have potential to be truly lovely, but they have made some incredibly unfortunate decisions regarding their landscape maintenance. Beautiful mature trees are butchered all over the property - presumably to "preserve the view" - but it is really unnatural looking and a lost shade opportunity. They have crippled their landscape.
All in all, I enjoyed the Westward Look, and their summer specials are great, especially for in-town get-aways. Next time I'll know not to rely on the free breakfast and try to avoid eye-contact with those poor, mis-treated native trees! -

Tuscon is usually not on top of every ones weekend getaway list. So when I was informed of our plans I just went with the flow without any expectations.
The minute our taxi pulled up to the front door I was blown away. The grounds are beautiful and surrounded by majestic mountains and scenery. The lobby is inviting and very relaxing and staffed by friendly check in staff. On the wall hangs a plaque from AAA awarding the resort 4 diamonds, I completely agree.
The Westward offers every amenity that you would expect. Three swimming pools, spa services, tennis, hiking trails and even horseback riding. My favorite pastime however was just sitting by the pool sipping on Belvedere gimlets.
The rooms are extremely comfortable and very spacious. High ceilings, and private decks and patios in each. My wife commented that our room was almost as big as our condo. Sadly this is probably true.
The on site restaurant looked like it could be very good, but I only had one meal there and it was for lunch where I had the cobb salad with steak. I can tell you that I request my steak cooked medium rare and the waiter made sure to check back and see if it was cooked to my liking (which it was).
Tip, check the Internet for deals. It seems as if you can always find a deal that includes substantial savings even during peak periods. -

Had another great visit here while having to attend a convention, which was downtown, but believe me, it was worth the drive to stay here and definately NOT have to endure even attempting to stay anywhere in the Tucson core. (shiver)
Service in the entire resort was top notch: from the valet, to the front desk, the the gift shop, spa, bar, pool area, maintenance, restaurant, room service, maid delivery - everything was totally efficient and prompt. O, and fantastic secutiry on the property.
My destination choice is def. not Tucson, and I did not desire to visit again, but due to other circumstances, found myself having to return. So a big thank you to WestWard for making me believe I was no where near the graffiti-encased walls, homeless-filled streets, and barbed-wired linned alleys of the downtown core.

The surroundings are beautiful, however, the hotel needs to be remodel because you can hear everything that is happening in the rooms around you. The walls and ceilings are so thin, you can hear people walking in the rooms above you and the cleaning people vacuuming the floors in the rooms above.
In addition the room's insulation on west side of the hotel is bad and the rooms over heat. Our room had a toilet problem and brought it to managements attention who did send out maintenance. Unfortunately maintenance level of detail did not resolve the problem because the gentleman said it was fixed. However he did not follow directions about the complaint regarding the toilet actually had bad gasket making a loud noise when someone sat down making the tank rock.
The room seating surfaces were also not top of the line for a 4 Star resort. It was faux leather which makes the body sweat when sitting on the surfaces. Real leather does not have this effect.
The restaurant staff did not regularly clean tables around the main pool dining area (noticed it took staff over 15 minutes at 8:00 pm to clean drinks and food). Food was reasonably priced however it was no restaurant i would recommend over the other great places in Tucson. I expect a level of detail from restaurant staff at 4 and 5 star restaurant or resort to be top of the line and clean.
The management seems to be missing a few queues regarding customer service from what they are measured against in the state of AZ in either Tucson or Phoenix metro.Comment from Craig W. of Westward Look Resort 5/16/2011

At first appearance, this is a nice hotel. Nicely landscaped, in a good area, close to everything. Rooms just slightly nicer than say a Hampton Inn. Pretty good summer rate with breakfast included. The breakfast was just okay, I've had better at the Hampton Inn so nothing special. It's June, 109 degrees, AC cannot keep up. It never goes below 84 degrees in this room. Called to complain, maintenance came and pretty much said, very nicely I might add, it's hot. Hmmm. Husband is sweating today so requested a fan from front desk which they promptly brought. The guy says, "it works great, it's been in use by the front desk all day." I think this hotel has an AC problem. I'm from Florida, I'm used to hot, but a hotels' AC should be able to keep you cool.
Now, if you have a disability, do not stay here. It really cannot be accommodated. The walkways are very sloped. Lots of stairs. I use a shower chair. There is no separate shower nozzle and the water comes out full blast, no way to turn it down. Worst hotel I've stayed at for disability access. I would not stay here again.Comment from Craig W. of Westward Look Resort 7/8/2011

What a unique and enchanting property to stay at. I would recommend upgrading to one of the star gazer suites for the private outdoor hot tub. Even with the cold weather it was a terrific treat to sit in an outdoor tub with our children and star gaze. As if the tub wasn't enough the massage chair in the room just put it all over the top.
The grounds are full of family friendly opportunities with pools, walking trails, labyrinth and exceptionally well marked plant specimens.
All the staff we came into contact with were friendly and helpful. Don't hesitate to ask them for whatever you need.
We will be staying here again on our next trip to Tucson! -

I've stayed at multiple resort-style properties in Tucson, including Marriott Starr Pass, Loews Ventana and the Westin in addition to one, which I stayed at a year ago on the Fourth of July for about $100--a rate that seemed a steal. While it didn't seem to have the youthful night life some of these others offer, the rooms were incredibly luxurious--very much akin to the Fairmont in Scottsdale. A roomy sitting space was complimented by a comfortable bed overplumped with pillows and an outdoor balcony complete with its own woodpecker. The bathroom boasted top-tier toiletries, a glass-walled shower, roomy closet and more-than-ample towels of all sizes. I enjoyed the glass-walled fitness center and appreciated the many games for kids--horseshoes, basketball and volleyball--and kids at heart There was also the option of horseback riding and a labyrinth for meandering. The location on the north side of town made it close to the city's upscale shopping and dining and easy-access hiking opportunities.

This resort reminds me of the Arizona Grand up in Phoenix. It's an older establishment, which is visible from the building exteriors. However, don't let the exteriors fool you-- the room interiors are fabulous. The WL recently gutted the guest rooms and lavishly remodeled the interiors. Inside, the rooms are very spacious and luxurious. I stayed here for 4 days with my Midwestern mother. She sincerely enjoyed the property's Southwestern/Wild West chef's garden, hiking paths, and labyrinth. I enjoyed it because it was cheap entertainment ;) The spa is small, but offers a robust service menu. Room service was delightful, which delivers from the GOLD restaurant. Recently rates have been more than fair, so this place is definitely worth checking out!

Now that I have stayed at the Westward Look a couple of times I feel qualified to review it!! In a word - Wow! This is a hidden gem of a resort (at least it had never been on my radar screen! Needed to add - I FOUND Westward Look on YELP the first time!!).
The Westward Look is not your typical new, high end resort - with golf course and lots of over extravagant facilities - but it is a great facility that I hope to frequent more often. Very relaxing grounds in the North foothills, with a great casual lobby and extremely comfortable rooms. Their restaurant 'Gold' is excellent - have had breakfast and dinner there - just what you want in a relaxing environment - definitely made us feel special.
The rooms I've stayed in are in little mini casitas (maybe 6 or 8 rooms per building) and feel very private. Very very comfortable. The hot tub was great too, very clean and great temp.
The best part (in my book) is that the rate was very reasonable, especially for the quality of the facilities. And if you pay attention to their site they have bargains throughout the year. -

Kapolei, HI
Flying in from Hawaii, Arizona was an eyesore to say the least, but the resort itself was very nice. The rooms were very clean, spacious, and overall very nice. The bathrooms were nice and they had flat screens. The property grounds were pretty as well, and they have 3 pools along with tennis courts and a fitness room. By the main pool, they actually brought a big screen projection out so that the families could swim and watch movies. It was very nice seeing as how my husband and I were at the restaurant eating dinner watching the movie. The staff is very helpful and polite. The only downfall was that it took a pretty long time for the shower to put out HOT water, and that on busy weekends (like 4th of July) parking can be an issue. (Also the $15 per night resort fee-which can add up when u stay there for more than 3 nights plus the cost of the actual room haha) Overall it was a very nice place and if i find my way back to Tuscon i will be staying there again.

Great resort. Rooms are large, and are like little cabins with chairs out in front to enjoy the evenings. I had a room near the pool and restaurant, really enjoyed my time even though I was in Tucson on business. Great restaurant as well, and friendly and helpful staff. Overall a great experience.

I was here for business, and they had great rooms for us to use in their meeting area. However - not all of the rooms are connected by air conditioned hallways. They brought out ample coffee, tea, water, ice tea, lemonade, cookies and pastries to keep you going from 9 am to 5 pm. I didn't check out any of the guest rooms.

Phoenix, AZ
This is my favorite place to stay in the Tucson area. It's beautiful, and the service has been pretty good too. The location is outside of downtown, but its proximity to the Santa Catalina Mountains and its sprawling nature more than make up for that. I've stayed here on four or five occasions and held several events there as well. You can often get a great deal from Hotwire, look for a 4star in the Oro Valley area. Highly recommended.

The staff were very friendly, the facilities are excellent, the landscape was kept very clean and the views are amazing. We had an ok view of the valley minus the two large bushes in our way, but the little critters that would come out to greet us made up for it. Didn't eat at the restaurant but the catered food we had was outstanding and very fresh.

Portland, OR
We stayed at this resort because of it's proximity to someone we were visiting. It does not have the feel of a destination resort - more of a place to stay while in the area. That being said...it is quite large and in a pretty location. Located on a lot of acreage with nice hiking trails. The rooms are large and nicely equipped - nice bathrooms, great beds, and flat screen televisions. Nice pool (though not heated - which is not a problem during much of the year). It has an older crowd - lots of meetings going on. The spa is really excellent. The main restaurant only so-so. We visited in late May and got an great rate.

I was only there for a one night, but I would recommend Westward Look. It's a bit of a bizarre set up; the rooms are spread out and face all different directions (views from the rooms are non-existent), and from the outside, they're unimpressive. However, the rooms themselves are very nice; big, clean, huge flatscreens, large bathrooms. There's a lot to do on the property, the restaurant is decent, and it does feel like you're at a resort away from all that is Tucson. I got a great rate, and I would probably go back again...well, that is if i ever have another reason to go to Tucson. Despite the layout, for the right price, Westward Look is worth a stay.
