A meal at Westside Tavern and a flick at the Landmark have redefined the idea of dinner and a movie for me. Tickets to An Education safely in our pockets, we headed into Westside Tavern on a Wednesday evening. We sat at the bar while waiting for our table, where I enjoyed a delightful white peach basil gimlet. The bartender offered the couple next to us a free appetizer and they shared it with us because they were so full. And was I happy they did: the arugula, apple and cheese flatbread was a light but hearty way to start off the meal.

We were soon led to our seats and greeted by our funny and friendly waitress. I ordered the trout with potato hash, green beans and smoked almond butter, and the bf got a flat iron steak with bearnaise sauce, which he quickly proclaimed was one of the best steaks he'd ever had in his life. While I wouldn't have said the same of my fish, I still enjoyed it a lot and practically licked my plate clean.

Throughout dinner we couldn't help but notice a heavenly wafting odor from a couple tables over. Our waitress informed us that it was the homemade Tahitian vanilla and sugar donuts, which we promptly ordered. Knowing that our movie time was quickly approaching, the waitress brought out boxes to pack our leftover donuts and assured us that they'd hold up great as a movie snack. Now, I've had some wonderful gourmet donuts before, but these are some of the best I've ever had. Wonderfully fluffy, crispy, warm, gooey, sugary, with amazing lemon and chocolate dipping sauces. Perhaps the best part of the meal for me, although it's really hard to choose a high point. We rolled our stuffed selves to the (fantastic) movie and I enjoyed a still delicious donut when I got home as a last reminder of my wonderful night.

For years, Century City Mall shoppers have always had a nice restaurant to visit--Houston's.  Westside Pavilion finally has its own Houston's.  I'm not the biggest fan of the Westside Pavilion.  They have done a lot on the west side (no pun intended) of the mall with a nice Barnes & Noble and the Landmark movie theater.  Westside Tavern sits next to the Landmark theater.

The restaurant was big with elevated levels of dining.  Many tables and booths--both traditional rectangular booths and circular booths for larger groups.  There was also a large bar.  Past the bar and across from the restrooms (which were nice) was another dining area, which looked like it could be used for private parties.

The decor was very much like a Houston's--nice, clean, sleek, and contemporary.  It feels like a nice restaurant without being too formal or stuffy.

We went for lunch.  The menu looks like it is an all-day dining menu (but, according to their website, the menu is different at dinnertime).  The prices at lunchtime were reasonable.  Main courses come in traditional plate entrees (steak, chicken, seafood) and sandwiches with a side.  The plate entrees run $20 and below while the sandwiches are in the $13 to $18 range.

We started with the cheese and cured meat board.  There was no price.  It was a very generous portion.  It included:

--Ciabatta panini crostini.  Long toasts.  Very good and perfect for meat and cheese.

--A sweet, warm raisin and nut toast.  Sweet and flavorful.  Toasted but still a noticeable chew.

--An aged goat cheese (which kind of looked like a brie though it was not creamy).  The goat cheese was good.  You have to be a fan of goat cheese though.  It does have a strong taste for some.

--A sliced, medium-to-mild flavored cheese.  Kind of like a swiss.  It was good.  Not a hard cheese--but somewhat firm.  Nice presentation.  The cheese looked like sliced apples.

--American prosciutto.  Very good.  Nice and flavorful.  Perfect thin slices.

--A thinly sliced sausage.  Tasty.  Not as delicate as the prosciutto with a slight greasiness to it--but good.

--A quince jam.  Very sweet and good.  Went great with the cheese and the raisin and nut toast (also went well with the next item).

--Cashew butter.  Easy to spread but also slightly textured.  Nice, distinct cashew taste.

--Whole grain mustard and gherkins.  Exactly what you would expect them to be.  The mustard was actually too strong for the rest of the plate.

It was a very good cheese and cured meats plate.  There could have been more cheese, but (with the exception of the mustard/gherkins) everything went well together.  They served us a generous portion of toast.  When we went low, the waitress even brought out additional toast.  It was market priced.  We expected it to be about $25.  However, when the check came, it was only $15.  Cheese and cured meat plates are often overpriced.  This was a steal.

We went with two sandwiches--a special tri-tip sandwich and the cheeseburger.  Both came with fries.  The fries were similar to Houston's--thin and crispy.  They were a tad thicker than Houston's fries.  They were hot, fresh and tasty.

The tri-tip was better than the cheeseburger.  The tri-tip was served on a browned french baguette roll (looked similar to the pretzel bread at Corner Bakery).  We thought the bread may be hard, but it was actually nice and soft (as was the nice, soft hamburger bun).  The tri-tip was good and nicely cooked--between medium rare to medium.  The sandwich was dressed with arugula, picked onions and kind of a sun-dried tomato aioli.

The cheeseburger was okay.  It was served with a thick cut of fragrant Tillamook cheddar cheese.  It kind of overpowered the burger.  The burger also came with arugula, caramelized onions and an aioli like sauce.  It would not be something I would order again.  While there was nothing wrong with the burger, there was nothing there that made it really amazing.  We wanted to order dessert, but we were in a rush.  And the huge portions left little room for dessert.  I'm not sure if it was the onions from the tri-tip sandwich or the burger, but there was a strong aftertaste afterwards.

The service was excellent.  The waitress Tiffany was very attentive, knowledgeable about the menu and friendly/welcoming.  We will be coming back.  It was a good first experience.  The prices were very reasonable.  We look forward to trying some of their other dishes in the near future.

Parking is free in the Westside Pavilion parking structure.

I came here tonight with a friend for dinner at around 6:30.  We were seated almost right away.  It seemed very dark when we walked in but we got used to it and there was a light over our table that made it easier to see.  Our server was really cool and knowledgeable, and he was very attentive.  For drinks we had a Pepper Smash, which has bell pepper juice and mint (sounds weird; tastes good), and my friend had a Cantaloupe sour which was also good.  The Pepper Smash is kind of like a lighter, more refreshing Bloody Mary.

Our entrees were excellent:  Cheeseburger w/fries; Trout special with potato pancetta hash and almond sauce.   But the best part was dessert:  OH MY GOD was dessert good.  We ordered the donuts and the apple tart, and both were incredible but for me the apple tart edged ahead in the end - the crust was flaky and crusted with sugar crystals, and there were candied pecans/walnuts under the vanilla ice cream.  The donuts were fresh baked and warm, and came with chocolate and raspberry dipping sauces mmmmmmmmm!!   We should have gotten just one to share because the portions are large, but still....it was worth it.

This place would work well for couples as well as friends who want to go out and have a nice meal.  It's easy to get to and was a nice surprise...I've been wanting to go ever since it opened and I was not disappointed.

Additional fun fact:  we went through the  movie theater area to get down there, and discovered that YOU CAN BUY MOVIE POPCORN FROM THE CONCESSION STAND WITHOUT HAVING TO GO TO THE MOVIES.  This is definitely a dream come true for me.

GREAT. It's been some time when I can say that everything ordered was on point. I had the kabobs, medium rare, with potatoes and my husband had the trout special with potato hash or something. Both were perfection. They have a Malbec on the wine menu which was delicious and we ended the meal with the sticky toffee pudding. Now, I must say, I've never had a bad sticky toffee pudding but this was out of this world. It was $9 but the portion was so big that we couldn't finish it which is a first for me. Our server was equally fabulous and very helpful with all of our questions. Topped off with free parking, it's damn near heavenly.

A nice place to have dinner with a small group of friends. Anything larger than six would probably make it hard for everyone to have a nice audible conversation with each other. You definitely want to order the sticky toffee cake pudding to share at the end of the meal, which is perfect for four people.

This place is PERFECT for a pre or post movie meal. I loved the lay out of the restaurant. The bar is spacious a great for a quick cocktail and appetizer if you are looking for something light... the kitchen has an open view which always gives guests a good feel knowing that the chefs have no problem preparing your food in plain sight.

I had the Pepper Smash to drink, which sounds strange when first described, but I must say that it is my new favorite drink! I need to figure out how to make it at home! It's a gin cocktail infused with red bell pepper juice. The drink had a smooth, yet subtle spicy kick. It was fantastic! So was the hummus and pita that we had to snack on while waiting on our entrees.

I chose the Sweet Corn and Mozzarella Flatbread for my entree which was to die for! It had fresh arugula and pesto sauce which brought the flavors together just perfect. My fellow diners tried the Grilled Cheese and the Egg BLT... with rave reviews on both items. Beware though... portion sizes here are HUGE, so split something if you just want a snack before you hit up the concession at the movie theatre.

All in all, love this place. Great location with tons of parking and great shopping right around the corner. I will definitely frequent this establishment!

KCRW's Matt's movies are pretty much always at the Landmark so we always try some place new in the area to eat.  Westside Tavern seated us very quickly and had our first round of drinks out instantly.  We ordered the grill cheese with tomato soup and a lamb dip and th food came flying out before I got too far into my blackberry julep.  Obviously they know that people have movies to get too and rush accordingly.  The food is a little pricey and the lamb dip was good but a notch below one from Cole's.  We actually were finished about an hour early and decided we might as well get a second drink.  I think this threw the waitress off because it took far longer for us to get our second drinks and the bill and we actually did not get to the theatre as early as we thought to get a good seat.  All in all about a 3.5 star experience, a little pricey but a good option right downstairs from the movie you are going to see.

If it wasn't for the sticky toffee pudding cake, there would be no reason for me to come here. It looks like they upped the price to $9 since it is probably the most popular and beloved dessert on the menu. Then again, $9 is a cheap price to pay for SATISFACTION.

I tried the short ribs ($22) the other night and was able to swap out the chubby carrots for spinach. I did think everything was pretty good. The spinach wasn't too wilted and seemed ultra fresh. The short ribs or rather, one large hunk of meat on an impressive long shank was tender. If I hadn't just had the most amazingly tender short ribs recently, I would have liked my meal just a tad more. The mashed potatoes were pretty good.

I also tasted the butternut squash soup and scallops on a bed of mashed butternut squash. Both of these were on black board specials that night. The soup had a good spice to it, very appropriate for Fall. The scallops were lightly seared and had good flavor.

I enjoyed the service as usual as well as that overwhelmingly great cake but I'm still on the hunt for the meal at Westside Tavern that makes me want to come over and over.

Wait, what?

Oh.

Very nice restaurant in a perfect location downstairs from the Landmark theatre and very good service, yummy food!
I am used to NYC so I don't think it is too expensive as all the other reviewers seem to.
We sat at the bar- my favorite place to enjoy a quick meal and a drink! The staff were friendly, helpful and efficient, the dark sexy lighting and atmosphere was lovely and so un-typically L.A. that was a big plus for me.
The food was excellent, very generous portions and well seasoned- rare to not ask for the salt at a restaurant.
I highly recommend it and will go back for a proper dinner soon.

I've been here a few times, here is my consensus:

- flatbread appetizer - good but filling. It's practically a pizza.
- crab cake salad - good
- balsamic steak salad - good
- cheeseburger - good. Everyone is raving about the cheeseburger and I think its good but not the greatest thing ever.
- risotto - LOVED IT. I think it was a special that day. It was creamy with cheese (maybe gorgonzola) and cherry tomatoes. It was a taste I didn't expect and I thought it all blended well together.
- bread pudding and toffee cake - just okay. It's too sweet and too filling for me.
- donuts - really good

Overall you can't go wrong here. Free parking. Cool Decor. And they have rooms in the back for private parties or special events.

I had read somewhere from some magazine (was it Angeleno?) that Westside Tavern has the best burger in LA. I was skeptical; it seemed so...pedestrian. It reads so simply on paper: Tillamook Cheddar, Caramelized Onions, Egg Bun. The fries came with good 'ol ketchup, and nothing more.

I gotta say, it is an AMAZING burger. The ingredients might seem like standard fare, but when "standard fare" tastes this good, who cares? The patty is juicy and delicious. The caramelized onions are perfectly sweet. The garlic aioli is there, but it doesn't dominate. And the bun! The bun is top of its class. Really, I could praise the bun all day. Seriously.

I could tell that my batch of fries was not fresh, so that was kind of a downer. I asked for an additional side of garlic aioli to dip the fries in, and that slightly improved the situation a bit. But what made up for it was the drink list. They have a lot of good stuff on there! I decided to try something new, so I went with the Brother Thelonius beer that the waiter recommended. It was delicious, but a little strong and heavy for lunch.

So yeah, great burger. It's simple in concept, yet has proven itself to be a viable alternative to Father's Office, Umami Burger, The Counter, and so on. Damn, we have so many good burgers in this town.

I would give this a 4 or 5 but got into an argument with the server!  What a biznatch!  (More on this later)

I took my friend here for his (very, very) belated birthday dinner, because it was the right thing to do to reciprocate - he had taken me to a nice dinner for my b-day months before.  He literally lives down the street from this place so we walked on over.  Actually we briefly dated, but decided to be platonic friends b/c we were "just not that into each other"!

Got there w/o a ressy at around 9pm on a Fri night and it was packed!  The interior of this space is awesome.  As we were walking around observing the design of the room, my friend ironically ran into his former classmates from architecture school.  After a brief chatting, the hostess came to get us for seating.  Sweet!

The first server came out and did a stunning presentation of specials and gave us her recommendations.  I asked her about a few items such as the Artichoke Smoked Mozzarella Flatbread and she loved it - know I would be ordering that dish.

We decided on the following:
* A beautiful Charcuterie and Cheese Board $16.00
* Soup of the Day (Corn and Bacon Soup!  Awesome) $6.00
* Halibut Fish and Chips $19.00
* Mixed Green Salad $5.00
* ARTICHOKE and Smoked Mozzarella Flatbread $14.00
* Carafe of Paige 23 Sauvignon Blanc $17.00
* Some beer on Draft my friend ordered (I'm no beer connoisseur ) $6.00

As you could see, the prices here are pretty reasonable, and the service was very knowledgable and crisp up until... the 2nd Server came to wait on us - I don't know what happened, but it was a weird shift change or something.

When we were served our Flatbread, I thought it looked odd - where are the Artichokes??  Instead, I see Corn, Oven Dried Tomato (which I don't care for) some weird Pesto and Mozzarella.)  When I asked the server about this she said that the Artichoke Flat bread was from last season's menu.  I told her that I saw the term and said the term Artichoke on the menu, so I must have been given the wrong menu.  I mean why would I seriously order 2 corn items?  And I don't even like oven dried tomato, for chrissssake!

Then she comes back in 5 minutes to throw back in my face that she sifted through ALL the menus and they were ALL printed correctly and looked at me like I was crazy!  (Yeah right - all 100 menus within 5 minutes, you've got to be kidding me)  That's when my friend blurted out to the girl, "Yeah, see I like the quality control.  You're all about QC, man!!"  When the server left, I turned to him and said, "You know what, you're supposed to be on my side, moron - especially when I'm treating!"

Whatever!   The Flatbread went pretty untouched, but the server still charged me for it anyway.  And I am mad at myself now for still leaving a close to 20% tip.

This is my first time to yelp. There has yet to be a restaurant worthy of the 15min it takes to sign up and write a review... until the Westside Tavern. I have been to this restaurant 4-5 times for drinks, dinner, and lunch.

The Atmosphere: Great! Modern wood interior, lots of booths, long counter-style bar (boasting a plethora of liquor), 2 easy-to-read specials boards, air-conditioned, and nicely spaced out. Its very relaxed, but has a formal, up-scale tone (not snobby). You are going to have a great dinner in a chic atmosphere.

The Food: Generous servings, unique presentation, savory and delicious. Anything you order from the menu will be awesome- from the grilled cheese with tomato soup to the tender steak kabobs with butterball potatoes.  Salads are classic but with an interesting twist. Desserts (my fav) include homemade donuts with raspberry and chocolate dips, apple cobbler, blueberry tart ... all amazing

The drinks: grapefruit rickey, mai tai pleasantly strong but fruity; sazerac and anejo manhattan the "real" man-drinks; great place to get drinks and appetizers before heading out

Bottom line: great atmosphere, great food, service is  fast and attentive.. a restaurant finally worth my time to yelp!

look out for wait time on the weekends, but well worth it! Cheers!

The food is fantastic.  I would eat here more often if it weren't on the pricey side.  This place serves one the of the best grilled cheese sandwiches I have ever had, with a side of tomato soup.

I give would give it 5 stars but some of the pricing bothers me.  I took my girlfriend here because I wanted her to try the grill cheese that I had been raving about., and our bill came to over $30.  That's right, $30 for two grilled cheese sandwiches and two cups of tomato soup that are included as sides.

In fact the grilled cheese sandwich is more expensive than the cheeseburger.  I don't see how that makes sense.

One issue some may have are the portions.  They are on the small side.  I mostly don't mind, because I would rather have it that way, than have them bringing out a mountain of food.  Easier for me to control!  But I can see that the price/portion ratio might bother some people.

But back to the quality of food.  Some of my other favorites that I recommend are the flat bread pizza and the lamb french dip.

Nice atmosphere too!

I visited Westside Tavern with friends for dinner last night. I had heard about it on dineLA! I was looking for something just a bit more upscale than Father's Office, Culver City. Westside Tavern proved to be the perfect option!

The decor and ambiance were very nice, not too loud, not too soft, very clean. The service was exceptional until they got busy later in the evening around 8pm. (I had to ask for a refill on my water after waiting ten minutes.)

The hummus appetizer was the best I've ever tasted! The server recommended a yummy Cabernet. My entree, Seared Sashimi Tuna & Artichoke Nicoise, tasted great. However, it was a little too salty for my taste. My friend also said her Grilled Prime Flat Iron Steak was too salty.

Overall, it was a great dinner. The music and atmosphere weren't too loud to where we couldn't hear each other. I didn't feel rushed out the door. My friends seemed to really like it too.

My friends that live on the west side think it's great to have a nice dinner option so close to the Landmark Theater at Westside Pavilion Mall. I've been telling everyone about Westside Tavern for this reason. It's nice to be so close to the 405 and 10 Freeways as well. A huge bonus is free easy parking. Yay for that!

I passed by this restaurant multiple times because I thought it was a bar.  Some friends of mine informed me that it was indeed a restaurant, and a good one at that.  In the past few months, I've been here three or four times.  Even though we go at the prime dinner hours, the wait is never that bad.  We put in our name, grab the buzzer and peruse B&N for 10-20 minutes tops before our table is available.  The waitstaff is excellent and they all seem to help each other out.

As for the food, here are some of my favorites:

Appetizer - Hummus, zucchini blossoms (didn't quite like the taste of the chicken liver mousse)

Entree - Pan-roasted Halibut, Grilled Angus Strip Steak

Sides - Brussel sprouts (yummy but ask them to go easy on the balsamic) and chubby carrots.

Makes me want to eat there for dinner tonight...

I had the best time here and I would come here so much more if it was in my price range!!! I'll keep it as a restaurant I'll love going to if I feel like splurging.

Service was excellent. I can't remember my waitress' name, sorry!!! But she was almost perfect! There were times when i couldn't find her, but it was really busy. She always came when she needed to, and when I flagged her down. And she was the right amount of enthusiasm and friendliness. Also made good recommendations.

Atmosphere was good, not too loud but not super quiet. It was a bit darker in lighting, and they have wooden floors, so careful not to slip if you're wearing high heels that don't have a lot of traction (which we all just buy knowing it could happen). Seating was spaced just right, not like you're next to your neighbor and with a little extra space to move in and out.

And the food...yummy yummy...had steak and fish and chips as entrees...yummyyy....but what stood out were the chicken liver mousse and the toffee cake. The chicken liver mouse was a jarful of goodness that you spread onto crispy bread. It also comes with fruit so its not too overwhelming. A bit too much for 2 people though. And the toffee cake!!!! The best thing ever!!! And I usually don't love something unless it has chocolate in it! This was the first time having toffee cake, and it made me fall in love with it. First off, its a biggg portion, and its served upside down so you get the crisp on top. Also comes with mascarpone cheese. Its rich, crisp, soft, fluffy, all at the same time. I would come here just for this.

Oh yea, and free parking:P Yes!!!

This place has some pretty delicious food. I went a couple of weeks ago and I believe I ate a braised short rib. It was delish and tender like a mo-fo. We split that with two people and we were both pretty satisfied.

For dessert we had the sticky toffee pudding. If you order dessert you MUST ORDER THE STICKY TOFFEE PUDDING. First of all, it is huge. Usually you expect a desert to be rather small. We couldn't finish it with two people, we actually took half of it home! Anyway, I digress. It is topped with a mascarpone cheese that resembles vanilla ice cream. In fact when I took a few bites I thought it was ice cream but it wasn't cold like ice cream. Im not sure of all the ingredients but I noticed that they use dates--so it has to be good for you right? Id also like to mention that I believe that this is a typical English dessert.

8.12.09: Based on the yelp reviews I was looking forward to coming here for dinner. I arrived exactly at 7pm and since they don't take reservations I'm hoping the wait wouldn't be too long.. Luckily my group arrived on time and we were seated in 15 minutes.

I really like the place, it difinitely does have the woodsy/tavern look. The one thing I didn't like however was the fact that I felt as if I was going to slip each time I took a step. The wood floor was really slippery and my heels did not like that one bit.  My friend did slip but luckily she didn't trip or fall. So be careful ladies if you're coming here with heels on.

As for the food. I was a bit disappointed since I have heard so many good things about this place. I ordered the salmon and it was fishy and dry.

The desset is worth trying. We ordered the bread pudding and the hot fudge pudding cake. All 8 of us like the fudge pudding cake the most. Dessert was the best part of the meal.

Service was good, nothing to complain about, but food was just a not what I expected. Need to come back again, I guess.

I really wanted to like this place. The name will remind one of a neighborhood bar/restaurant, with the word "tavern". And once you walk in, the place looks airy and yet broodingly hip. The stylized wood accents are all around with a bar that stretches the length of the main dining room. Tonight we were celebrating a friend's birthday in one of their two private rooms.

The bar is one of my favorite features of the restaurant. It hosted lots of diners with ample room for bartenders. If I were a bartender, this would be the ideal bar to work at. They also had a great selection of tequilas and other top shelf liquors.

With such a large group tonight, the planner decided upon a set menu. We had choice of either soup or salad for the appetizer with their flat bread pizza. Their flat bread pizza was probably my favorite dish of the night. It was, literally, a pizza with roasted tomatoes, basil, a gooey cheese. The soup that I had, a corn chowder, was thick and had bits of corn in each bite. Unfortunately, after that, it went downhill.

Included in its choices for entrees, for tonight, we could either have the cheeseburger, risotto, pot roast, or chicken. I naturally choose the cheeseburger, based on my burger & mac'n cheese rule. I was told, by a close friend, that their cheeseburger was the best that they had ever had, even better than Father's Office. Once I bit into the burger I almost immediately knew that this was not the burger experience I was looking forward to. Perhaps it was the wait, for all 24 other entrees to be served at once. The burger was not flavorful. The cheese was unappealing. The bun was large and soggy, from sitting there under heat lamps soaking the juices. I was unimpressed and sad for my poor burger experience.

I hoped that my dessert, the bread pudding, would make up for my bad choice for the entree. But I was wrong. Though it looked great and sounded great, the dessert was way too sweet. I wasn't expecting all that chocolate to be blended in the dessert. It was just way too sweet for my taste. I had a bite of the toffee cake, which was quite good. I thought it looked like a chocolate cake. It wasn't that sweet which fit my taste quite well.

Aside from the bread pudding and the cheeseburger, I liked Westside Tavern. Good location, at the Westside Pavilion, with either free self parking or valet parking in the back.

8 months! 8 months! I can't believe it took me this long to find out about this gem of a restaurant. Sure, it took about 15 minutes to find parking on a Friday night but damn, it was worth it.
Here's a list of the Tavern's awesomeness:
- the BURGER! Hands down, it gives In n out a run for its money. If not for in n out's $3 price, this burger would be the top on my list. The Tavern's burger puts Father's Office, burger bar, apple pan, counter etc to SHAME!
-Beer selection, lots of nice beers on tap. Sorry, no bud light.
-Bar: Huge! Makes waiting for a table bearable; lots of room.
-Service- from hostess to bartender to servers, absolutely classy.
- Inexpensive for how nice the restaurant is and how good the food is (for the 2 of us, we got two beers and an entree each, came out to $50 including tip).

OK, that's enough. You gotta try it.

Nice vibe, great ambiance and attentive service were all pluses for me.  Hostess and waitstaff were friendly without being intrusive.

Had the lamb french dip for lunch with a Heavenly Hefe beer.  There was too much horseradish on the sandwich or else the horseradish was just stronger than I would expect, because it completely overpowered the taste of the sandwich.  The fries were good.  I'd ask them for the horseradish on the side, that way you can control the heat (and I do like spicy).

I think of the Westside Pavilion as Before Landmark and After Landmark. In the last century B.L. the Pav was... boring. However, out of those boring ashes a phoenix rose and lo and behold a beautiful movie theater was born! The theater begat restaurants, who begat restaurants, who begat frozen yogurt joints, and finally after much fanfare, the Westside Tavern opened.

It's all blonde wood and chaos inside. Many hostesses, many servers, and many bartenders all working mostly together to orchestrate your meal. As of late, we've taken to eating at the bar, which is the best option on most nights when it's packed to the gills and the wait is long. But if it's just two of you, that's a mighty fine option. Their drinks are stellar. The cocktail menu is at once inventive and classic. I recently enjoyed the white peach basil gimlet. Inventive! They boast one of the most delicious sazeracs in town. Classic! Given that it's credited as the oldest known cocktail, they've had some time to perfect it, and they do it mighty justice. I could go on, but they're all good, so pick your poison and drink up.

As for the food, I think it's almost all delicious across the board. My favorites include the baby artichoke and smoked mozzarella flatbread, the nicoise salad, and the grilled salmon. My other half often enjoys the burger and the grilled chicken club. I've stolen many a french fry from his plate to his dismay and my delight.

Of their desserts, I highly, highly recommend the blueberry tart. The berries were so sweet they needed nothing else. And the doughnuts, oh, the doughnuts. Let me wax rhapsodic about the doughnuts. These little cinnamon-sugar glazed beauties smell like heaven and taste like perfection. They were so good I returned the very next night to order another round. I ate them as my meal. They were divine.

My only complaint is that when they deliver food to the bar they almost never know who has ordered what, so they often end up traversing the entire length of the bar asking if you ordered the food. (Are you my mother? Are you my mother?) Now I'm not saying it's easy for a person who didn't take the order to magically figure out who the food belongs to, but you could at least number the chairs or give them a ballpark destination. It's not that hard, is it? But that's a minor gripe in a sea of good, so unless you're a real stinker, don't let that deter you.

All in all, the Westside Tavern is an extremely welcome upgrade to the Pavilion. Its food is crave-worthy, its location--above free parking and below one of my favorite movie theaters--is stellar. Sadly, it's taken my attention away from the wine bar upstairs, but I'm hoping that prompts the (awesome) wine bar to get better food so we'll have even more choices. A girl can dream, can't she?

Normally, a restaurant located inside a shopping mall is immediate grounds for disqualification in my book. But Westside Tavern is the exception to this rule. I would put this place a notch above Houstons, probaby on par with Banderas in Brentwood. I've been there 3 times in the past few months, and have not been disappointed with anything I've ordered. The lamb french dip, sweet corn flatbread, mac n cheese, burger, and ahi tuna are probably my favorites. Good atmosphere and a great layout...make this one of my favorite places to grab a casual weeknight dinner and drinks. A welcome addition to the area.

If you like to get really drunk and have great food, this is the place to come before a movie at the Landmark.  It's in the same building as the Landmark - one of the best theaters in LA.  Came here last night with a couple friends, and the service and food were great.

I started out with a Mango Daiquiri which has Bacardi 8 | Pureed Mango | Lime Juice | Angostura Bitters | Prosecco.  Damn was it strong and tasty.  I was tipsy after one drink - note I am a lightweight though.  After the meal I had my favorite drink, a amaretto sour - again very strong.  I tasted my girlfriend's Hemingway drink, quite good, not quite the right taste for me though.

We ordered three dishes and shared them all.  We had the special which was Scallops and risotto - if you know me, you know I love my scallops, and these were to die for.  So tender and yummy.   We also had the Grilled All Natural Atlantic Salmon which comes with Sweet Corn | Summer Squash | Sungold Tomatoes.  The Salmon was cooked just right and the summer squash was delicious. The 3rd dish was the Dungeness Crab Cake Salad.  Of the three, this was the most disappointing, as it was a small crab cake with just a few pieces of lettuce - still quite tasty though.

The servings are small and the meals are pricey, but at the end you feel like you've had a great meal.  Entrees run anywhere from $17 - $25, and salads from $10-19.  The entrees are worth it, not so sure on the more pricey salads.

For dessert we had the Hot Fudge Pudding Cake, which comes with Tahitian Vanilla Ice Cream and Candied Walnuts.  You all know how I love me some ice cream.  The pudding cake was warm which melted the ice cream just right with each bite.  I definitely had a foodgasm with this dessert, and it was all the more better after a couple drinks.

The service was great too, probably the best I've experienced in a long time.  Dorinda was our first waiter, and she did a great job on selling us on the dishes we chose and tending to our needs.  We had a 2nd server who was great too, missed her name.  Both were cool and down to earth and very chatty.  Kudos to the hiring manager, great job!

After doing my research here on Yelp I was super excited to visit Westside Tavern last night for a belated B-Day dinner...sadly due to a circumstance beyond their control coupled with an annoying server, I was a bit, well....disappointed.

The night was off to a bit of bad start when my brother arrived and put in our name and was told it would be a 40-45 minute wait...ok I get it, Saturday night and they don't take reservations, that was understandable. However, we didn't get seated till nearly an hour and a half later. Really??? Ok...again it was a Saturday night. I'll move on.

We were seated and greeted with our drink orders taken by who we assumed was our server, unfortunately not. We were then approached by a different server who was to simply put it annoying. Give me this tangent- She was trying WAAAAY TOOO hard to be sarcastically funny and it just wasn't working. We had to repeat things because she wasn't listening and interrupt her because she wouldn't shut up. Ok, strike two...the damn food better be good!!

By the time we were seated we were obviously STARVING. We started off our meal with calamari & rock shrimp appetizer. GREAT start! The calamari and shrimp were lightly breaded and perfectly cooked! The shrimp was tender and the calamari wasn't chewy. The best part?!? The roasted tomato vinaigrette they served with it, instead of the traditional seafood or marinara sauce. It merried perfectly! Awesome! We also had their special flatbread that had bleu cheese, green apples and arugula. Now I'm NOT a fan of bleu cheese but the julienned apple and arugula salad that topped it was delish! I just ate the salad topping. Yum!

Then came another blah moment. Some a**hole put out a cigarette in a planter and it apparently wasn't out, because it started smoking and caused the smoke alarms to go off and the gas to auto-shut off in the restaurant. Sooo, what does that mean? They can't cook a frickin THING!!!! UGH!!! What else could possibly go wrong!! Sheesh!

Our server comes out and told us there would be delays with food until they could get the gas back up, ummmm, I already waited a damn hour and a half to be seated and now you tell me another 20 min until they can even place the order because the damn grills need to be reheated WTH!!! Oh yeah and nothing comp'd. I mean really!?!? It was definitely beyond their control, but really, they should've done something, a comp. drink, app., dessert, something!?! With all this going on and such my friend asked to speak with a manager....instead of bringing her/him over, our server comes back telling us there would be no delays. Whatever! Though, thinking about the dinner later....I realized she was full of crap. The food was slow to come out but because we ordered a couple of apps we didn't realize it till later.

For my entree I chose the Portabella and Mozzarella melt. YUM! The mushrooms were marinated in a balsamic vinegar sauce a top a slice of what looked like whole grain bread caramelized onions and topped with melted mozzarella cheese and served with a side of fries. My brother chose the Lamb French Dip and while it was tasty he said the horseradish sauce was a little too strong a flavor. I tasted a bit of the sandwich and got an end without alot of the sauce and thought it tasted good! The lamb was soft and tender and the bread was a nice lightly toasted baguette and the caramelized onions were a nice touch. My other friends ordered the three cheese grilled cheese and the chicken club. The grilled cheese was served on these huge slices of texas toast and served with a tangy tomato basil soup. The chicken club was a nice serving but my friend didn't like the avocado mash they put inside. Instead of just sliced avocados it was a guacamole type mash that he said added a "weird" taste to the sandwich. Overall we did enjoy the entrees and were happy with our choices.

For dessert I knew what I wanted after my research here Yelp. The Sticky Toffee Pudding!! OMG! SO GOOD! My only complaint, I wish it were served with vanilla ice cream instead of the marscapone topping. It was almost too rich for the already rich cake. But that warm, moist, cake was heaven!!

Overall the food was really good! Had the service been better it would've gotten 4 stars. I would go back because the food was good, though next time it will HAVE to be during the week when they're less busy and I will definitely want a different server. The one we had really did bring down the meal.

HANDS DOWN, best burger in LA. Yes, seriously folks. Better than FO, The Counter, and Barney's Burgers. If you don't agree, we need to take this outside...

But seriously, what's great about the burgers at Westside Tavern (not to be confused with the ritzy, expensive Tavern in Brentwood), is that the meat is perfectly seasoned and topped with this amazing garlic aoli and (i think) Camembert cheese. It oozes with flavor, and the arugula they put on top of the meat definitely counterbalances everything between the soft eggy buns. Yes, it's a pretty hefty burger, but well worth the calories if you're treating yourself to something outside of a healthy diet.

If you're a fan of fresh raw Oysters, they usually have on special Fanny Bay Oysters too that are $12/half dozen (that comes with this great soy-based dipping sauce + cocktail sauce) and can be a great combo if you can convince a friend to go halfsies on the burger and share some oysters. I would say the Oysters here are even better than ones I've had from Santa Monica Seafood.

Also--inside tip--you can ask for extra aoli spread on the side which you can use for the fries, which makes their already awesome fries even more spectacular!!

The only reason why I had a dock a star from this otherwise amazing place is their wait times on the weekends can be HORRENDOUS. If you're planning on seeing an 8pm movie at the Landmark, you better put your name on the list at 6p at the LATEST or else risk missing the film. Strangely, they have a whole side room behind the bar that's never open, even though their wait times on the weekends can be over an hour long. If you're comfortable with "hovering" over the people in the bar area--it's first come first served, so if you're lucky enough to snatch a high top table or bar seating as people leave, do it, because it'll save you the sometimes hour-plus wait.

I just love it when I go to a place spur of the moment and am wowed.

After the Julie and Julia screening for Yelp, my best girl and two of the coolest yelpers I know decided to partake in the Westside Tavern just below the theater.

Just wow.

The drinks were really great. I tried the blackberry julep and a cucumber spritzer. Both were refreshing and lovely.

Because I was trying to be good, I ordered two small appetizers. A ceviche and brussel sprouts. They were both wonderful! I was so glad I tried these two dishes, and especially glad was able to try my friends ravioli. Impressive.

I hope to return to the Tavern soon and sample some other great items I saw on the menu.

Am I at a King of Prussia (Pennsylvania) mall restaurant?

Because that's what it felt like.

Most of you native Californians and non-Pennsylvanians won't know what I'm talking about.

From the website and online pix, I always thought this restaurant would be huge, airy, good feng shui, and warmly lit. But actually, it's not as spacious as I thought and rather dark. It didn't fit the stereotypical mold of a tavern (I'm sure anyone from the Midwest or Northeast would agree with me), but it's JUST my kind of tavern because it's modern, new, and clean. Love.

So I've been here a few times now. The food has been consistently good, and the service has consistently been shotty, poor, and rushed. The service will definitely make you feel like you're at a tavern ;)

The food is delicious.
Steak and Fries - Yes.
Tender meat - was pleasantly surprised

Chicken Cobb Sald - Hell Yes.
They do not skimp on the chicken chunks here or the bacon or blue cheese and everything else that goes in this salad, with the exception of the actual salad part aka the lettuce...or in this case, the baby greens.  If they put as much baby greens in it as they did the toppings, this salad could potentially become one of my favorite cobb salads.

Grilled Sweet Corn - Yes.
A little oily for me and not overly grilled (which I appreciated) served with fresh pesto and heirloom tomatoes.

Ahi Tuna Sashimi Nicoise Salad - Yes.
Ok, I love the salads here but why are they so stingy with the baby greens? Seriously, I get it. They are trying to keep it classy, but salads should be full and luscious. Come on, make it tavern and less westside.

Scallops and mashed potatoes - I'm going to say Yes.
But, I hate scallops so I won't go any further with this, but I'm sure seafood lovers will enjoy.

Warm sticky toffee cake - Yes.
It's definitely a $9 portion so thank you WS Tavern.
I hate to say it but it reminds me of the honey bran muffin served at The Kettle. I was a little disappointed when I did not find crunches of toffee bits in it.

Hot Pudding Cake - Yes
But where did you go? You have been replaced with the chocolate bread pudding. wahh.

Peach Crisp - Yes.
This reminds me of the lovely tart I had at Church and State although in Crisp format. Desserts like this rewind me back to brunch or breakfast and I can't help but to think how lovely it would be to enjoy this type of dessert in daylight.

Location: across from Barnes and Nobles and underneath the Landmark Theatre's main lobby.

Parking: self-parking in structure or valet in structure or street parking.

As always, peep the pix.

I went to the Westside Tavern for the second time last night and decided it's good enough to post about on my blog : ). The atmosphere is nice, as my boyfriend says, very much like Houston's. It's nice enough to get dressed up on a Friday night or to dress down and feel like you're at a pub.. just a really good in-between like that. It is also in the same building as the Westside Pavilion movie theater so it's easy to plan a little evening out. They have a great selection of beer, as well as wines, and seasonal appetizer and meal specials.

So far I have tried the items below ( I need to see if I can find some photos). There is a lot more I would like to try.

The grilled cheese and tomato soup combo
This is a decadent but simple meal that really satisfies in a comfort food kind of way. The idea is to dip the thick melty sandwich into the tomato soup. Delicious.

The roasted corn soup
Soup just has the most amazing potential for flavor, and this one maximizes that potential. The taste is sweet delicious ripe corn.

Lamb french dip
I am a huge french dip fan and this one is awesome. Although I would have liked some more jus.

Fried green beans
These were awesome. I would get these every time I visit. Crispy tempura-like outside and sweet and fresh inside.

Grilled chicken sandwich
Eh, boring.

A friend got the pot roast and said it was too fatty for him

This is going to be only half a review because we only visited for a late night dessert (and Cheese) run. The atmosphere was lovely, even though this restaurant is attached to a mall. It reminded me of a Houston's.

The desserts were HUGE and delicious.  We ordered all of them as we were a huge party and could share. I do not do desserts so I ordered the cheese plate. I loved the presentation of my cheese plate. Though it was not the best cheese plate, it was very good. The desserts were all great. I had a bite of them all.. .The winner, by all, were the donuts! :)
Will come back for a full meal

As of yesterday I was ready to give this place 3 stars because of the poor service we received from the staff. It killed our mood for the entire time we were there! I really think we sat on the side of the restaurant that had new servers or something.

The place is very rustic and nice. A HUGE bar, nice wine fridges up against the wall, and a pretty decent space with great natural light.

Ive heard mixed reviews about the cocktails either watered down or yummy. I had a glass of wine and they had a great selection of beers.

We ordered the oysters because we heard they were great here. The first two were tasty but the last two were yucky.

Then we waited about 45 minutes for our food. I felt like we were the only table they were ignoring. I asked another waitress to please get our waitress for us as she hadnt come by and we didnt see her.
Get this- she bent down low to my eye level like I was a 5 year old and said "Im sorry what did you say? GET MY WAITRESS. "What do you want? I can get it" MY FOOD? its been almost an hour. "Ok" and walks away. Snooty!!! Weird attitude and disposition.

My salmon with grilled corn, squash and tomatoes was DELLISH. We also ordered the lamb french dip which was good but nothing too special.

Oh and when I ordered the fish the waitress asked me if I want it cooked medium rare? Huh? Who asks that about fish? Ummm I want my salmon cooked and not overcooked thanks. So ok she said medium- medium then? Uhhh ok. yea.

Listen, the atmosphere is nice. Mixed crowd, lots of old couples amongst pretty young people. The food is great! Thank goodness!

Our waitress came by only to ask if we wanted another drink, never came by during dinner to see how everything was, and the minute our plates were cleared she was there in a single heartbeat to ask if we want dessert. Where were you when I was waiting for my food or needed more water? UGh she was sooo slow and lame.

Im sure ill go again for cocktails and to try some other things on the menu. Price range is from $10-$25 for everything pretty much.

That warm stick y toffee cake is a KILLER. It's the size of your head, seriously, and SO delicious.

Drinks are top-notch and food is solid. I had the lamb french dip on a previous visit, and it is tasty indeed. Don't bother getting the fries, though, they're not that great. Save the room for dessert.

Great spot for before or after a movie at the Landmark. Plus it's extremely convenient to public transport, so you can get tipsy without endangering anyone.

The food was pretty good for a restaurant located in a mall. I liked the lamb french dip and the toffee cafe, both are warm, moist and yummy.

The deep fried zucchini blossom filled with ricotta cheese was not bad but a bit on the salty side. If you feel like a refreshing dish, try their gazpacho soup.

LOVE THIS PLACE! Reminds me a lot of Houston's.

Went last night with my wife. First, we totally lucked out and snagged a primo parking spot...... parking at west side pavilion is usually a bitch and a half. Then, we get inside.... 30-45 minute wait, which is expected. It's 8pm on a Friday. We wander over to the bar, and order a few drinks, standing behind 2 people seated at the bar. Within 30 seconds they leave, and BAM! We've now got a cumfy spot at the bar. Great beer selection - Stone Arrogant Bastard, Stone smoke porter, and a bunch of other really god beers. The wife had a martini, and the bartender loaded her up on olives and onions.... she loves that.

a round later, our vibrating, alien coaster thingy lights up, and we get seated..... we got a great seat over looking Pico blvd. Our server, Liz, was great. We never waited more than 30 seconds for anything.

Okay. the food. We had a half dozen oysters and the meat/cheese board to start. The oysters were awesome. The meat & cheese board was absolutely incredible. One of the better appetizers I've had recently.

I had the lamb french dip. Spectacular! With really great fries. My wife had the short rib pot roast. Equally incredible.

We wanted dessert in the worst way, but were absolutely stuffed. Definitely next time. Love this place.

Of course, I've been just waiting for just the right time to go to Westside Tavern but they weren't open for lunches for a long time and now they are! So, we went this past Saturday. It's a huge restaurant, dark wood interior, dressed for Halloween but not garish. Very sleek design, I could see taking visitors here for drinks and dinner -- it's very "L.A." in the best way. Reminds me slightly of Bandera on Wilshire, it's got that Hillstone Corp vibe of Houston's/Gulf Stream, etc.

We sat at the bar which is easily the most comfortable I've sat at with a wide, shellacked counter top, purse hooks, foot rests and cushy stools. There was a long line of freshly prepared fruits which almost made me want to order a mixed drink and, if I didn't have to shop for a new couch after, I might have! We were presented menus right away but the bartender, Darrell (he gave us his name so I feel free to use it here), wasn't interested in talking to us at all.  He just kind of looked at us. I asked for a glass of water and Darrell said no, that first I had to order a drink then I could get water. Ummm, jokes? He did bring us water and a wine to taste which I thought might have been an attempt at an apology of sorts but he was pretty heavy-handed about making us order that wine--one of the most expensive on a pretty well-rounded list. Instead, we ordered the chardonnay we wanted and he presented the check without asking if we wanted food...we had to call him back. (There was a rose that wasn't on the menu, we spotted it in the cooler, and the other bartender on duty gave us a taste. If we had known it was for sale, we would have ordered that but Darrell wasn't going to offer us any extra info.)

But thank goodness the food was good! First, we ordered the Dungeness Crab Cake Salad that came with a huge meaty crab cake and lightly dressed salad (obviously, they read the LA Times review and cut back on the filler). At first it looked like there were too many ingredients on the plate but it was really, really tasty. We would definitely order it again. We followed up with the Albacore Salad Sandwich which I wasn't expecting to be just a basic tuna sandwich. I mean, I should have figured that out but the "Albacore" in the title threw me off. That said, it was a great sandwich and the fries here are excellent if you like fries.

Oh, but that bartender. For both courses, Darrell seemed to have forgotten us which I guess is a luxury he has working at a restaurant with great food but still! He seemed to have forgotten us so completely that, at one point, standing right in front of us, Darrell told the other bartender on duty he "didn't want to be there." Fine, well, great, nice to know. Another couple sat down the bar from us to be ignored for minutes while Darrell chatted with some co-workers. We were trying to flag him down for some balsamic but we never got the opportunity to request it.

All in all, I would go back because the food is consistently great, the restaurant is cavernous and modern, the bathrooms are impeccably maintained and I would still sit at the gorgeous bar and just pray that Darrell is having a better day.

Surprise, surprise, dining at the mall CAN be good!  The restaurant is good looking, ala Houston's, with it's shiny wood floors, walls and tables.  I ordered the fish and chips and while it's not the true fish and chips wrapped in newspaper and dripping with oil, the tavern's version of fish and chips was really good.  The fish was so meaty and played center stage of the light batter so I actually didn't feel all that guilty eating it.  The tartar sauce had hints of tarragon(?) and something else that made it ever so more delicious than your average tartar sauce.  And the chips, oh the chips.... they're fresh fried potato chips and were so potato-y and deliciously crunchy, I still think about them daily.

One of my friends ordered the short rib and wow that thing looked awesome!  I had a taste of it and I will be ordering it the next time I go there... along with a side of their chips...

AND dessert!  The LA Times review raved about their apple pie which I did not get to try but we ordered the bread pudding and that was warm, chocolate-y and gooey, topped with cold ice cream.  If the apple pie is supposed to be even better than that, then I really have to go back.

I was like whoa! ala KR with the huge bar area and restaurant space. The back walls have big booths and the tables have ample space that doesn't give you that holy shit this place is cramped feeling. We came here before a screening @ The Landmark. I was hungry and wanted some meat so i went with the cheeseburger no onions (filthy veggie) and the wifey's got the grilled cheese with tomato soup.

We started with an appetizer of figs with a port reduction and bleu cheese. The appetizer didn't blow me away. The figs were ok but the reduction or lack there of just sucked. There was not sweetness to compliment the flavor of the figs. Also, the bleu cheese had no salty pungent punch.

My med rare burger rocked and it was mighty tasty. The patty was loosely packed but it held firmly. It was juicy, moist, cooked perfectly pink, and the soft firm egg bun held it all together for me to enjoy. I was a bit disappointed with the sea salted fries since there was no trace of salt on them (fuckers). I did try my wifeys grilled cheese on texas toast and it was really good. Its a nice choice for comfort food along with the tomato basil soup.

I really didn't want to have wine with dinner, so going over the menu i saw a cocktail that peaked my interest. The sazerac was the winner. I love whiskey and this drink delivered me to the holy land. The flavors of the whiskey with lemon, and a touch of black licorice from the absinthe made a happy camper.

We headed to Westside Tavern before the movies.  We did not have a reservation (it was a friday night) but we were able to be seated within about 20-30 minutes of arriving.

The menu boasted so many good things we had difficulty trying to decide.  This is where our awesome waitress came in.  I have been to restaurants and asked for help deciding and i have gotten every answer from "well those are two totally different items" - um duh to "well i can tell you what i love".  This waitress discussed the pros and cons of each of our choices.  We were thinking the grilled cheese because it sounded so good and her response was "although it is a great grilled cheese, but gc is great comfort food for a rainy day or when you have just been broken up with".  So we went with the lamb dip and fried egg sandwich.  Can i say yummy!!  I definitely want to go back to try other items on the menu.

My only disappointment was that I was so full from dinner that I had no room to try their yummy sounding deserts.

Also, their drink selection was really good.  These use real fruit juices in their mixed drinks - go for the grapefruit one - can't remember the name, but it was good!

Would rather give them 3.5 stars for not taking reservations but it's a solid 4 for the food and overall service.

The good:  Food was pretty good for the price including portions. Our server was really nice and spot-on.

The bad:  Having to wait for a table.

Overall:  We'll go back when we have enough time to kill before a movie.

Two of our crew had eaten here before and said that the food was pretty good. I looked online at the menu prior to coming so I was pleased by the offerings in that it was basic fare but it sounded like they'd put on the gourmet without being too complicated. I must say, I was pleasantly surprised.

I was looking forward to having a burger or a French dip. I went for the lamb French dip, which I was a bit hesitant about since lamb can tend to be overly gamy, but the Tavern did a nice job. The lamb was moist and the caramelized onions paired well with the meat; the bread roll was fluffy and soft; biggest complaint is there wasn't enough horseradish and the amount of onions made the sandwich a bit too sweet but this is fairly minor problems. The side of fries were great - thin fries well crisped and none too burnt.

One got a rare steak prepared well, and I'll guess he liked it enough since he cleaned his plate. One got the salmon, and as he's practically a salmon connoisseur, I'll take his word for it that it was good. My aa got the braised short rib, and while I can say the presentation was a bit ludicrous and unnecessary, the food itself looked good - meat falling off the bone and topped over some mashy goodness.

In short, we enjoyed the Westside Tavern for its fare and for its convenience in location, minus the no reservations policy. It's worth trying if you've got the time to spare before a flick. Or, I guess if you just want to try the food, go by during an off-peak eating hour. It's worth a visit.
