I took in my chinchilla, Chimi, for his recommended 6 month check up appointment for his teeth issues on Sunday 12/24/2023. We scheduled another tooth trimming for mid-January. However, a couple of days later, Chimi's health quickly deteriorated. The staff were able to take in Chimi immediately on Saturday and stabilize him.
While I was waiting at home, I had full trust in their ability to save his life. Unfortunately, the results showed that Chimi had kidney failure, probably from old age (10+ years), so I had to make the difficult decision to euthanize him.
Even though it was past closing, the staff kept their doors open for another hour and waited patiently as I said my goodbyes to my best friend. I will forever be grateful for the people here that helped Chimi through his medical issues in his last year. I really think he made the decision to go (didn't want to deal with another surgery!!), and he was surrounded by love in his final hours.
Thank you for sending a thoughtful card after his passing.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 1Oh no 0Jul 13, 2023Previous reviewReview for CHINCHILLA:
I've had negative experiences with vets (check my post history), so I am extremely cautious when it comes to trusting clinics with my exotic pet. In February, I noticed dental issues with my chinchilla, Chimi, so I took him to an emergency pet hospital that gave me a list of places where I could take him.
After calling 5+ locations at 3pm, Westminster Veterinary Group had same day availability. I decided to take him in the next day, and they were able to schedule a surgery in 2 weeks. The vet techs took extra care for my chinchilla, and the front desk staff were amazing with scheduling appointments, checking refills, and calling to check in.
I had so many questions, and multiple vets were able to answer with expertise and patience. I understood the various procedure, medications, and care that were done to my chinchilla, and I never felt that I was being upsold.
The first surgery was very intense as Chimi's dental disease was severe. He had an infected tooth + gums, and all of his molars were overgrown. Dr. Greenberg took the time to explain that they would trim minimally because a chinchilla's jaw is very delicate, and after trimming, I would still notice drooling since his mouth was so used to be "open" from the overgrowth.
My chinchilla has just finished his second dental trim (July), and he is recovering very well. I fully trust every person who works here, and I am so thankful to them for saving Chimi.
Cost:
The cost for a regular appointment is $102, recheck appointment is $72, and emergency appointment is $172.
For the first surgery, I was quoted a maximum of $1949, but I ended up paying $1306.
For the second surgery, I was quoted a maximum of $1,160 for the trim, but I ended up paying $925. His fur is matted, and they were able to trim the matts under anesthesia for $18.
Other details:
*Surgeries are scheduled for Wednesdays.
*Dr. Hueston and Dr. Rettig performed the surgeries. - M D.Fountain Valley, CA747914Feb 2, 2024Updated review
I haven't been to this vet for ages but after 10 years of not having pets, we finally got one for the kids. The person who sold us the puppy had taken care of them with updated shots. They chose Westminster Vet for our puppy. So to keep things easy, I just kept bringing our puppy back to the same place since all the records were already there.
They moved to a much smaller location on the same street. I have to say the service is much better and I'm not feeling the same sales tactics that was pushed on me relentlessly a decade ago. My dog hasn't had any big health issues that this veterinary location has resolved but so far, with the normal routine e check ups, I'm starting to feel like the staff cares more about the pets again like how it was when I first brought my other pet there long ago. That's a good thing!
Will keep this vet for my pet, for now.Helpful 0Thanks 0Love this 0Oh no 0Oct 20, 2009Previous reviewI have been going to Westminster Vet Group for years and even recommended several of my friends and families there. The first time I took my bulldog there, it was great! It wasn't until the last couple of years I have started noticing how much they have changed. The technicians are rude and for some reason, whenever you make an appointment, they never stick to it. One of my appointments was at 12:00pm, the doctor didn't even see me until 1:30pm, nor would they come in periodically to tell me the reason for the wait or even apologize. When I went to question about the wait, the technician rudely told me, "well, there was an emergency" as if I should have known. Just know, that every time you make an appointment with WVG, expect to be there for at least 2 to 2-1/2 hours with one of those hours just waiting.
Most of the time, I come in there for a routine check up for my bulldog. I seem to always walk out paying $400 or more for everything. When I first came there, the young female vet ( I don't want to mention names) was a new, sweet, shy, honest, and somewhat inexperienced vet. Now, she's become a fast-talking salesperson and still inexperienced. She actually pulled out a medical book and was researching information right in front of my sister-in law when she came in for a check-up!
I hate the cold calls to push dental work and blood work every other week. I tell them each and every time that when I'm ready, I will give them a call so to please stop calling me and pressuring me to come in, THEY STILL CALL!
And why is it that every time you call them, they always put you on hold forever! One time I was on hold and when a technician picked up the phone, she accidentally hung up on me. So when I called back, the same girl answered and without waiting for me to respond, she put me on hold again. Finally, 10 min later, she picked up the phone again and was ready to help me. I informed her that she hung on me and she completely denied it and accused me of hanging up first. All she had to say was I'm sorry but she made a battle out of it. What ever happened to that phrase, "the customer is always right?"
Just recently, I wanted to refill my pain meds for my pet. They wanted me to bring in my dog in order to refill the meds. Wth?!?!? I protested and asked them for justification. They didn't have a legitimate one so they refilled it without anymore argument.
WVG has now focused on profit more than they focus on the well-being of our pets. I love my dog and I would do anything for him if it makes him a healthier pet and I hate that WVG takes advantage of that love to make a quick profit.
My sister in law has found a new vet that she is happy with and with the experiences I've been having with WVG lately, my pet, as well as all the pets I've referred there, are now going to give this new place a try. - Melanie A.Monterey Park, CA12542Mar 23, 2024
so much comfort knowing my birds are in good hands. they were fairly sick when i got them but the Vets here helped nurse them back to good health. They always answered my questions and reassured me along the way.

I think the doctors are probably excellent however as with most Vets that treat BIRDS-expensive! Unknown neighbors saw a birdcage on my patio and figured I knew how to rescue a parakeet that was dying. Truthfully, it looked like it might've been dying , not moving out on another street. I picked it up off street and brought it home. Made several calls and could not drive it to Mission Viejo, and these lovely people said they could see it for $89....with a Senior Discount. I ended up keeping the bird after I placed a number that you couldn't find the owner for the little runaway.
I'm not saying it's not worth it I'm just saying, does anybody know of a low cost clinic for this type of thing ? . (I am not a Vet, nor do I play one on TV) Cheers.Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Leanna P.Garden Grove, CA045Mar 21, 2024
This is the BEST place to bring your pets! They are patient and loving with our fur babies and with us when hard decisions need to be made. They ensure the best care at a reasonable price. They love our babies as much as we do!

I've come here for different types of visits for my hamsters. Dr. Hueston is one of the few veterinary recommendations in the nearby area that are listed on the California Hamster Association's webpage. She is very caring and offers us different realistic options for our hamsters. We've gone through three major mass removals for one hamster with her, each one with confidence that the surgeries were going to go well (and they did!)
Westminster Veterinary Group was one of the first calls that I made when I came home and found my elder hamster in his last few moments of life. Staci was on the phone with me walking through all the different options and was still on the line with me when he took his last breath. Her compassion and empathy helped me through the difficult time and I'll never forget that. We went with their private cremation services, provided by West Coast Pet Memorial Services. We received an ornament with our pets name and paw prints, a box (that we selected and had the option to engrave) with his ashes, and they were able to give us some clippings of his fur. We also received a personalized e-card from the staff afterwards.
As bearers of good news and bad, the staff at WVG handle all situations well. Everyone in the office does amazing work and is so good at what they do, I've heard from friends that finding a good vet that you can trust is difficult and I feel lucky that I was able to find one from the start. Westminster Veterinary Group are absolutely stellar and I'd recommend them to anyone with pets (but especially those with exotics!)Helpful 1Thanks 1Love this 0Oh no 0 - Chloë M.Los Alamitos, CA2115Sep 11, 2023
Seriousness impressed and grateful for this team today. They got me in within an hours notice when my senior cat was struggling. They went above and beyond to make sure he was not stressed or alarmed or confused, and Toby ended up being so comfortable he ended up taking a nap. They were so quiet and gentle with him, he didn't even notice when he got a shot for his arthritis. We were out the door with a very affordable treatment plan within an hour, thanks to the vet, techs, and front desk!

This place deserves all 5 stars, this is an extremely caring and compassionate veterinary office, not only have they helped me care for my dogs they also specialize in exotic animals and cared for my bunnies.
During COVID they compassionately cared for my sick rabbit and allowed my husband and I both to accompany her during her euthanasia.
Now they care for my dog happy and we work on preventative care and they are awesome :)Helpful 1Thanks 0Love this 1Oh no 0
