19 reviews for Westlake Dermatology & Cosmetic Surgery
I was told by 2 doctors that I was a hypochondriac or worrying needlessly about a suspicious mole. Lisa Rhodes did a biopsy and it turned out to be a malignant melonoma. She operated and cancer is gone and I will live now thanks to her.
I love this office and staff. A bit pricy, but have used both medical and cosmetic sides. Would highly recommend Dr. Lisa Rhodes. In fact, just referred someone to her today.
For cosmetic side I love Erma who does my chemical peels and is super nice and knows what she's doing.
This is my first yelp review and I can assure you my old insurance agent will get a rating but it won't be five stars ; )
I go to Westlake for a lot of things. Family skin cancer. Photofacials. And most recently, a little um, assistance on aging.
Everything at Westlake has been 100%. Dr Rhodes is great, and very easy to talk to and doesn't push services. Emily the aesthetician does a fantastic job on photofacials. And if you don't like your brow furrows, Kelly Wala is *the* go to person in town if you want to soften lines but still be able to make facial expressions. She actually tours the country teaching other doctors how to do filler and botox.
My only complaint is that Westlake is a good bit more expensive than other places in town. But you know, when it comes to the face, you only have one. So I'll pay a little more to ensure my medical spa services are done just right.
I thought Westlake Dermatology was extremely slimy and oriented more for getting your money out of you than treating problems. To begin with, they are extremely expensive and they don't publish the names of the Doctors on the website so you can't research them. To me, this is shady to begin with. Then, I made an appointment and after waiting 45 minutes was brought to a "patient room". I never saw the Doctor, but instead saw a girl who said she would recommend me for a Doctor's appt. I said that I thought that was what I was waiting for and she told me that she first had to look at me to evaluate whether I needed to see a Doc and then I had to make ANOTHER appt. Yet they still tried to charge me $300 for that visit!! When I never even saw a Doctor. This is malpractice to me, and very dishonest and not considerate of our time. They are too expensive and are a sham. There are other better dermatologists in Austin that aren't afraid to let the patients know their names and backgrounds before you meet with them.
I went here and saw Dr. Rhodes. She was fabulous. I had badly sunburned my FACE and worried after two spots appeared on my lip that wouldn't go away.
I made my appointment and the office staff was extremely courteous. The nurses explained what to expect and I was surprised that they were going to go ahead and do a biopsy of my lip...just in case. I like this aggressive approach - especially these days.
The procedure was as quick as painless as a razor blade to the lip could be! I was happy that they were so efficient and friendly.
I would recommend this place to family and friends. I had a great experience with Dr. Rhodes.
I recently went here for a skin condition that was driving me nuts, and was misdiagnosed by both a PA and one of their dermatologists. I suffered for several weeks before going to a Primary Care doc who instantly and correctly diagnosed and cured me. He said it was an easy and obvious diagnosis, was shocked that a dermatologist could miss it, and politely suggested that I get another dermatologist.
My conclusion about this practice: they are more interested in cosmetic procedures than real medicine. Go here if you want to get touched up, but if you need medical attention, avoid this practice.
After seeing Stacey P's review, I feel compelled to add my own 2 cents as well.
Yes hormones do suck sometimes, I had the exact same problem Stacey had, hormonal breakouts (i.e adult acne), Ugh! I never had it before and one day, BAM, they came from outta nowhere! ...and I am not talkin oh one little dot here and there. These f'ers stayed for like weeks and just kept blowing up in the same dang spot. I was mortified. I wanted to go hide under a rock, never to be seen again. I kept thinking, wtf? I am 27 yrs old, I'm not suppose to look like a freakin pimple popper, brace face, 15 yr old.
So I scheduled a doctors appt at Westlake. The medicine for acne is VERY expensive, that's no joke. Go figure..my insurance doesn't cover Retina Micro, because after the age of 25, it's considered VANITY! WHATEVER, I had a serious legit skin condition (well at least that's how I felt about it). In addition to retina, I got prescribed 2 other medications, which would have cost me like $300-$350. So I called my Dr. at Westlake and she was very nice about it. She gave me crap loads of samples and also wrote me some new prescriptions that were similar to the ones she originally prescribed me, but were cheaper. Turned out I never needed to get the prescriptions because I got a years worth of supplies in all 3 medications prescribed.
So yes, I agree with Stacey P. I would definitely recommend going to Westlake Dermatology.
PROS: Nice doctors, plenty of samples, relatively quick service, nice facilities
CONS: Since this place provides services other than dermatology (waxing, laser hair removal, botox. etc)..you will frequently see lots of pretty, blonde, tan (no offense to those who are) people. So when I went for my visits, it made me feel extra UGLY with all my skin problems, but I eventually got past that initial blow of self confidence after the 2nd follow up visit
I had a great visit today with Kristie Obranovich, a nurse practitioner. I was seen on time, and the visit was thorough (skin check) and efficient. I wasn't kept waiting at all between check in and my visit with the practitioner. I'm planning to continue to use this office for my dermatology needs.
Hormones suck sometimes. About four years ago I started getting hormonal breakouts and they haven't stopped since. Thanks a lot adult acne. They aren't terrible now but they used to be. Westlake Dermatology saved me.
I was seen within five minutes of getting there which is a big plus! I also had a skin examination to make sure I didn't have any mole issues and learned some really great tips on sun care. Since I'm so fair skinned I'm big on the sunscreen, unfortunately I can't undo the damage I did back when I tanned all the time. If I could only go back to my younger self and warn her.
Once we decided the route we were going to take to try to get rid of my remaining problems. They gave me tons of samples and 3 rebates for $50+ dollars off of my prescriptions (retin-a is NOT cheap)! The office is a bit out of the way but they're great so I don't mind the drive. If you're having skin issues, I highly recommend Westlake Derm.
The atmosphere at Westlake is rather spa-like and on first appearance, you might think they cater only to people with cosmetic issues. However, our family has received great care for medical issues.
I've seen a few of the doctors at Westlake and they are all very nice. However, my favorite is Dr. Rhodes. She is friendly and sweet, but an expert and removing things such as lipomas.
My husband has seen Piper Allen, the PA, and he thinks she's the great.
I also had a chemical peel. It hurt like crazy, but the aesthetician was caring and gave me a fan and some water. Oh, and helped talk me through the pain! End results were great.
Another good thing. If you need a sample of something, Westlake is very happy to give you plenty of freebies to try before writing a prescription.
I recently had a breast enhancement back in May....I could not be happier. Dr. Craven and his staff are amazing people. I felt so comfortable from the first moment I stepped through the doors. Kary was the first person to help me out. She is a doll! Her customer service was wonderful! Shannon was my consultant...she made me feel 100% at ease and ready to jump in and get going! Elizabeth,Courtney again just a wonderful part of the staff ....my wonderful pre-op nurse Sara and The one and only wonderful Dr Craven whose work makes me smile in the mirror daily! :) The staff at Medical Parkway were just as wonderful. My nurse Sherry :) My super cool anesthesiologist Kim. I will not forget Lisa who took really good care of me appt wise. Well you all know what you did fabulous to make me walk away a happy patient. Kudos to you all! You are a wonderful staff! I will be back....for something someday soon! ;)
Doctor Lisa Rhodes saved my face!
I have rocasea really bad. I went to Westlake Derm and got the proper treatments and the redness reduced drastically.
Granted my visit was for medical reasons (so I can't really comment on cosmetic procedures), then again, my treatment was for vanity's sake too. Nobody wants to have a blood red face when we are out facing the public!
Kudos to Westlake Derm! I love them.
I stopped going there and switched to Austin Dermcare. yes, the doctor I saw did her job and removed a scary mole I had, but the attitude...you feel like if you're not blond, blue eyed and have more money than Michael Dell, you're not going to feel comfortable there. the front desk receptionists are rude and look like they're still at Westlake High. and after getting my medical procedure finished, they try to sell you these overpriced skin care products!?!? is this a salon or a dermatology practice?
Avoid it if you can.
i used to drive to dallas to get microdermabrasion treatments done for skin maintenance. i had tried various clinics and spas in austin who claimed they did a good job with facials / microderm services, but received awful results and skin breakouts from them. after i was recommended to megan stewart at westlake derm, i finally found an aesthetician i trust here in austin who knows what their doing. the results are always exactly what i want with no redness or breakouts afterwards. she also gives good, honest recommendations on skin care. i wouldn't trust anyone else with my face - she helps me maintain clear and healthy skin! i have friends and coworkers who swear by her results.
The staff, with the exception of a few receptionist are cold and uncommunicative. They charged me ($400) for a follow up procedure after I was told there would not be a charge. They behaved unprofessionally, arguing with me, insinuating that I was lying about what was agreed upon. I was treated poorly in front of other clients waiting in the lobby. I have never been so humiliated in my life.
I will never go there again.
I went in for my annual make-sure-I-don't-have-skin-cancer check with an added please-help-my-skin-stop-freaking-out-as-it-readju sts-to-humidity consultation. The waiting room is very nice, although I didn't spend any time there as they saw me immediately (extra star!). Everyone was really nice, including the receptionists. I was in and out quickly with skin checked, prescriptions faxed to my pharmacy, and samples in hand. The only downside is that it's kind of a trek to get there.
The staff is great and the doctor really takes her time with patients. I have been considering laser hair removal and will definitely be doing it here since they have been so great with my regular dermatological issues.
Its hard to say how I feel about this place. On the one hand, its a giant mecca of ridiculous snobby westlake cosmetic dermatology. On the other hand, they also have medical appointments for normal people. I was referred to Dr. Kathleen Herne and was her patient for about 3 years. My first appointment was positive, but I almost left the practice after an incident involving me simply trying to get ahold of my doctor to ask some questions about a medication and I could never get through. I sent a letter of complaint and Dr. Herne called me personally to apologize, and even gave me her cell phone number - so I decided to give it another try.
Overall, my experience with Dr. Herne was positive, and she tried her hardest to get me a diagnosis for a longstanding problem, did reasearch outside of our appointments and consulted with other physicians to try and help me. I would give her more stars personally than I would give Westlake Dermatology as a whole.
The biggest problem is the phone menu - which makes it very difficult to talk to anyone in person (just press whatever number leads you to make an appt so you can talk to a person). Also, some of my medical treatments were accidentally billed as cosmetic, causing a problem with my insurance, but they promptly corrected the problem. Cosmetics seems to be their #1 priority, so as a medical patient I felt kind of secondhand.
Dr. Herne has recently moved to Florida, so I won't need to go to Westlake anymore. But if you want a chemical peel and cellulite treatments, and have gobs of your husband's (or daddy's) cash to spend, this is the place for you!
I highly recommend Dr. Lisa Rhodes if you are in search for a dermatologist. She is very professional and sweet. I had to see her to get some moles checked out and removed. I am a big baby when it comes to these sorts of things. Dr. Rhodes made me feel very comfortable and it was almost painless. The staff that works with her were all extremely nice as well. I was very pleased with my visit!
Having spent the majority of my childhood lotion-less in the sun, my time had come. Addressing skin damage is not pleasant, but with a moley surface area, I had to do it. Referred by my regular physician, Westlake Dermatology became the headquarters for scolding Sarah because she didn't wear suntan lotion. Ever. In the end, I've only had two removed, but the process has been less than fun.
My advice would be to avoid Westlake Dermatology if necessary. Not because they're so terrible, but because they're rather inconvenient. For starters, to reach their offices, you have to drive allll the wayyy west on Bee Caves, past the intersection of 360 (Cap. of TX Hwy). They are a dual service clinic - offering both medical and cosmetic skin care. They'd rather not have the cosmetic people run into anyone, so they've separated the offices for your convenience. (If you're going to prevent skin cancer, head up to the 3rd floor.) When the elevator dings, the doors open on a beautiful lobby - an airy, white-walled space with vaulted ceilings and plush couches (the kind your mother would tell you to NOT actually sit on). At times I was unsure whether I was in a doctor's office or an architect's. If you go to the restroom, you'll see why.
Anyway, this isn't helping anyone. On to the medical aspect. Everyone's friendly, but also a bit stiff. The whole place is so sterile in a strange way. It doesn't smell like a hospital, but when you see the designer chairs in the exam rooms, you'll kind of wish it did. Their hours are 8ish to 4:30, with an hour in the middle where they close up shop for lunch. My frustrations began early on when I had difficulty scheduling an appointment. If you are not a stay-at-home mom or dad, or a student, you will have trouble. Their SIRIUS satellite subscription leaves your head spinning with tunes you haven't heard in a very long time...for good reason. As one of the nurses told me, "Yeah, whoever gets here first gets to the pick the music. So you're kinda at the mercy of whoever's early that day." It's good to know there's no hierarchical structure of music selection, although I wished there would have been as the 80s music blasted in my ear in rhythm with the scraping and tugging of skin removal on my right shoulder. Point being, there are many medical specialists in Austin that can accommodate you in a more gentle and efficient manner.
