The best place in the Peninsula/South Bay for flutes (and band instruments) and sheet music.  They only carry quality instruments, not the cheap kind you can buy at Costco.  The student instruments are of high quality.  (I send all my students to try, buy or rent instruments there.) They also carry professional level flutes (Muramatsu/Sankyo, etc.).  Employees are very helpful and knowledgeable.  Open 7 days a week.  Call for hours.

One of the few sources of sheet music in the Palo Alto / Mountain View area with reasonably knowledgeable staff. West Valley also offers instrument rental and instruction.

Nice little surprise near downtown Mountain View, West Valley Music is one of the few places in the area that carries band and orchestra instruments, although they don't have a large facility to display their instruments.  Their repair staff does the job quickly and inexpensively and the sales people in the front room are very helpful and have a great sense of humor.  The sheet music collection is extensive.  I'll probably buy my next flute here.  Prices are very reasonable.

If you need sheet music, 'this' is the place to go.  They've got a huge selection and variety of everything you can need.  I haven't seen any other retail store that offers what they've got.

The staff is quite friendly and unobtrusive if you're just browsing, but they can also be very helpful if you already know what you're looking for.
