Their fresh baked bread is delicious and, at only $4/loaf , I"ll never buy bread from Safeway or Trader Joe's again!

Mmmm I love bread and I love good bread and I love a fine selection bread, all of which West Portal Bakery handsomely offers.
I went in just to look around and was surprised at the variety.. different kinds of baguettes, batards, loafs and rolls behind the counter, desserts and pastries for show in front, specialty bread behind glass.
I ordered one of each kind of foccacia because foccacia is delicious and I was very happy to see it offered somewhere other than North Beach. There was bell pepper & zucchini, "pizza" foccacia w/ red sauce & green onions, all oniony foccacia and a very cheesy foccacia. All of them were very good and very filling, especially after being toasted a little. I love how they were not skimpy with the toppings. I gave it a 4/5.
As a whim I purchased their cheese & onion roll which looks like a mini baguette and smells heavenly. There are actually pieces of onion inside. Even though it smelled great the taste was far too light. I would have preferred it to be a bit heavier with more cheese & onion inside. 3.5/5
I will come here again because they offer a fairly good foccacia and I love the fact that there are several, generously topped varieties. The prices were high though.. for a mini baguette & four pieces of focaccia the price came to just under $13.
3.5/5 -

Whenever I'm on a break from my job, I do whatever I damn want without any disturbing interruption. Amen!
My time at this family-owned bakery was a bit of a roller coaster. I ordered my coffee and a Blueberry Cheese Danish totaled to $4.00. Every pastries and treats are baked in the bakery in the back (I like that). But the filling of my Danish was quite tiny.
Many of the older folks were reading their newspapers and chatting with friends. But I was blasting some old-school Too $hort rap on my Samsung Galaxy tab with my snack (the volume on the mobile device with my Bose Headphone is "AWESOME!"). The workers and older folks were eyeing me in a baffling way as I was nodding my head to the old-school beat. "Life is... too $hort!"
I guess my disturbing street-like behavior has gained negative acknowledgment from this bakery on my ensuing visit. -

Being my neighborhood's local bakery, it's a shame that the customer service is so horrendously terrible here. I'm all about locally owned neighborhood shops as my folks own a restaurant here in S.F. So I know all about keeping your customers happy...especially the ones that live in the area, that will give you repeat business.
West Portal Bakery is probably the worst neighborhood bakery that I've experienced here in S.F. The employees that work there never seem to greet you, and let you stand around like you're an idiot seeking attention.
What's disappointing for me, is the fact that I actually really enjoy their variety of breads and cookies. The Rosemary Bread is always so fragrant, and I love the rustic texture, the crisp crust, and fluffy inside that lasts even days later.
But I've had way too many experiences with the staff getting so poo-faced when you ask them to slice the bread. What's the point of having a bread slicer if you are going to get so grumpy when the customer asks you to take 2 minutes to slice it.
Furthermore, they get even more grumpy when you ask them to slice your bread if you purchase their 6pm Deal--Buy 1 Loaf, and get the Second Free. Apparently because you are getting one free, they really hate to be nice and slice.
My most recent sour experience came yesterday during lunch as I was in need of quick bite to eat. I asked the employee to show me which specific breads were available for the sandwiches, and rudely tells me that they're listed on the board. Clearly, I noticed that, but not all of the bread varieties are available for sandwiches so I asked to have her point them out to me so that I could have a visual. In my mind, there are certain breads that just aren't good as sandwich breads, so I wanted to be sure before I knew what I was ordering.
The lady's attitude was so rude that I had to walk out. Apparently it was too much to ask of her, to just point out which bread was which. Despite previous other sour experiences here at West Portal Bakery, I've continuously given them chances because I believe in little local shops.
I wanted to believe that I probably caught their employees on a bad day, that these negative situations were isolated incidents. But after numerous experiences with their rude, unfriendly, and apparently lazy-ass staff, I'm taking my business elsewhere.
This pains me West Portal Bakery, you are my neighborhood shop, but your service just S U C K S ! So I've come to the conclusion, that not all local neighborhood businesses care about their repeat neighborhood folks. This place is the epitome of a bad neighborhood shop that doesn't care about neighborhood business.Listed in: Desserts, Pastries, Ice…, The Service Sh*t List

Stopped here because it looked like it would be a good place -- it's not.
Snickerdoodle was dry and too tangy. Almond croissant was bland, chewy and rather crappy.
Wife says bathroom was kinda gross, too.
Gave it two stars because the girl behind the counter was very nice. -

I COME FOR YOUR BREAD!
6:00 is 2 for 1 time. Tomato focaccias are my favorite although they should make it a point to make more because I've noticed they seem to be EVERYONE'S favorite. (supply and demand man!)
Pretty chill spot to grab a pastry and work on your Words With Friends games. I make it a point to stop in here everytime I'm in the area.

Pretty reasonable price and good french bread and their pastries are really good too. I usually stop by from work and get their pastrami sandwich on french bread.
If you go after 6pm they usually have buy one get the other free on breads. Sometimes I give the free one to the street guy, but sometimes he's already probably heading home? -

I wish this place used the Peet's bakery recipes. It's great to have a neighborhood bakery but a lot of the stuff is kind of meh. I like the french rolls and the banana bread is okay. The muffins, croissants and scones are bland. Its hard to explain but they just look like some corn dough with a couple fruits or whatever thrown in, not the high quality artisan type stuff that you see cafe's like Peets. Hope they can improve.

I came in and ordered a roast beef sandwhich. The server was polite and my bread was toasted. I'm not sure why the meat was'nt. I enjoyed it. But I did throw up all my food afterwords. Not sure what that was about.

I did have their bread pudding much later with a vanilla latte and was fine! :) -

Yummy pastry. The sandwiches are really good as well, although they will not use sourdough bread for the sandwiches - even though it is right there behind the counter... that is odd. Still, I recommend the place.

The woman behind the counter was very nice, but the Mexican wedding cookies were just O.K. and the chocolate chip cookies were heavy and tasteless.
The oatmeal-cranberry cookies were good, but at these prices, one out of three is not good enough.

I stopped by for the first time a few days ago and picked up one each of their biscotti. That was one pistachio, one almond, one chocolate and one chocolate covered almond biscotti to be exact.
So, finally, a few days later I've finished them all. Pistachio was my least favorite and I will probably never buy that one again, but when I'm in the area I'll surely get the other three and perhaps try some new goodies too. -

I work with a group of adults with developmental disabilities. When we go into an establishment, salespeople tend to be polite but distant. Maybe they're afraid that we'll break something and insist on not paying for it.
West Portal Bakery is the nicest place we've ever frequented. Every time we come here, the staff is very accommodating, especially the young man behind the counter who appears to have assistant manager duties. We were given free samples, which were so good that a few people in my group decided to buy some pastries.
Their brownies are great. Soft, just-chewy-enough, chocolatey, and not overwhelmingly sweet. Their sandwiches are delicious too.
Most of the time I come here, I pick a random pastry and it turns out to be pretty damn delicious. My favorite is their pecan pie. Ooohhhhh Jesus. I won't be surprised if the roads in heaven are made of this stuff. They also have a rum cake that's really worth getting for the holidays. It looks pretty and you can actually taste a tiny hint of the rum.
All-in-all, great staff, great pastries, quick service, and surprisingly convenient parking. There's a parking lot next to the store that almost always has a spot open when I'm there. -

Whenever I am in this cute neighborhood, I always stop by here to get the vegetable foccacia bread as my breakfast with a cup of coffee and the whole wheat sourdough. Many bakeries do not have the option of both whole wheat AND sourdough because, as the baker told me (very nice, jolly fellow), they have to knead it twice so it is a longer process. My husband and I love this bread so much sometimes we can just sit and eat it the entire loaf for a snack (oh yes, delicious carbs!). The bread smells and tastes so fresh and the crust is actually crispy crunchy. Yum yum yum! They slice the bread for you too if you like.
I have also tried the Rosemary Loaf and do enjoy this as well.... but my personal preferance is the whole wheat sourdough since I am mainly a sourdough lover and only see rosemary when sourdough is out!
The only quam I have is with the Red Velvet Cupcake. I am on a hunt to try every Red Velvet Cupcake in the city and sadly, the cake is too dense and dry for my liking. The cream cheese frosting was OK...firstly there wasn't enough of it and it was a little on the sugary side with not enough cream cheese flavor. So more like 2 stars for the cupcake and 4 stars for the bakery itself. -

I came here because I was craving for some sweets. I bought 2 butter cookies, 1 red velvet cup cake and a cheese bread. The cheese bread was tasty and my son loved it. However, the cookie and the red velvet was very disappointing. I personally would not come back there again.

This bakery isn't very good. On my quest to find the best bread pudding, I ventured into WPB. I was so excited to see that they had bread pudding, so I told the cashier boy (who was really helpful) that I wanted one. The lady who was supervising the cashier glared at me. Uh...ok. Since I apparently pissed her off, I decided I wouldn't want to sit in her presence while savoring my treats, so I decided to take it to-go.
I bought a small block of bread pudding ($2.85) and it was so nasty. It tasted egg-y. I wanted bread pudding..not egg pudding. After a couple of bites, I had to throw it away.
I also bought a Snickerdoodle cookie for my bf who loves cookies. He took one bite and trashed it. I've never seen him do that. Even if it's bad, he'll eat it and imagine it's good (this applies to many things). I guess even imagination couldn't save the damn cookie.
Some tips for WPB: The two items were kind of expensive for some seriously quality-derived treats - lower the price or maybe up your quality. The service could've been better - don't glare at paying customers.
Tip for my Yelper-buddies: Skip WPB. -

West Portal Bakery doesn't have that old school vibe of Mazzetti's or Galli's but it feels more casual, warm, and homey, like the Chestnut Bakery. There are a few tables where you can sit and enjoy your pastries.
Italian items include with foccacia (several different kinds), biscotti, cheesecake and ciabatta. French bakery items like croissants, brioche, and cream puffs. They also have sandwiches, espresso drinks, full size cakes, scones, tarts, cookies and a variety of loaf breads. The croissants and brioche look larger than average. The cookies looked good in the case. I've heard good things about their semolina bread (it's not available every day) but I haven't tried it yet.
I had the chocolate chip brioche ($1.95): it was on the dry side even for brioche (translation, very dry) with very few chocolate chips. I think it was overbaked. The exterior was quite dark, darker than usual. I also tried the double chocolate biscotti ($1): quite crunchy but it had a stale aftertaste. Stale biscotti - ugh.Listed in: Non-Asian European Bakeries

parking is just okay. depends on your timing here.
one thing i love here is their forcaccia its very good. they have different kinds and you can't get a bad piece.
the other thing i love here are the butter cookies. and their brownie. decent priced. I really love all their cookies so what can i tell you...try their cookies, nice and moist, and thick.
the one thing i don't love, the red velvet cupcake. its just to rich in the frosting and i just don't enjoy too many red velvet cupcakes made by anyone. in fact, i only love one red velvet cupcake made by another place. though you'll have to search my reviews to find it. I won't mention competitions name here in this review.
So give this place a try. They have enough sweets and Breads to choose from. -

I've been craving another apple fritter since I stopped by La Boulange last weekend.
Unfortunately West Portal's apple fritter was too much fritter not enough apple. But I did dig their two for one deal that goes on after 6.
Also, their biscotti was quite hard, even the next morning and their pumpkin bread was definitely better the next day.
I'd come back for the pumpkin bread but not for the other two.Listed in: Cause Apple Fritter is the…

They use 100% Organic Flour at this neighborhood bakery.
The bread is excellent.
They make croissants and classic brioche, which is nice and hard to find outside of a French bakery.
Cookies are OK - more cakey and thick than I usually like. I like the chocolate chip and the Mexican Wedding cookies.
They have a Peanut Butter & Jelly sandwich on their menu. I think that's cool.
Here is the real reason I go there:
BREAD PUDDING. Yep, bread-pudding-to-go, sliced in thick rectagles with a light custardy-sauce on top. It's moist, spiced with nutmeg and vanilla, and really damned good with a cup of coffee (get the coffee elsewhere if you can).
I dedicate this review to Denise L., who loves bread pudding more than anyone I know.Listed in: Baked

I'm not reviewing them on their bakery items per se, but rather on an odious policy of theirs: bait and switch. I will no longer patronize them.
They currently have a sign that says 2 for 1 after 6 PM.
I walk in, mention that it's past 6, say I'm interested in the 2 for 1. A friendly encounter between a happy customer and willing salesperson. So far, so good.
Then I decide to order 2 luscious lemon bars (I'm a person who believes any lemon bar is a good lemon bar although some are obviously better than others, but I digress).
At $1.70 each, I expect to be charged $1.70 total for the 2 for 1 special, but nooooooooooo. "$3.40", quoth he!
What's up with that?!
Apparently, the items in the display cabinet on which the 2 for 1 sign sits is not part of that deal. Nothing on the sign says, indicates, implies, or otherwise alludes to any exceptions, much less the products directly underneath the sign.
They would not honor the deal, so I declined the sale and walked out. I returned a few days later. Same sign. Same deal. I spoke to someone who worked there, but he didn't care or see any problem.
There are enough other bakeries and business. I don't need overtly unethical ones. I don't need poor customer service. I won't accept bait and switch. I'm done with them. -

I only go for the Amaretti cookies. So yummy. The price has definitely gone up, but what hasn't? I remember getting them for 50cents a pop, they are now 90 cents. Still as yummy as ever. I don't frequent this area so much though, so it's a definite treat that can't be passed up!
Everything looks really yummy! I want to try the foccaccia and brioche and cakes. OH MY! -

Everything they have is soft, yummy, tasty and just amazingly good!!!
I snuck in for the first time today and am a huge baked goods lover.
I got some choco-chip cookies, pecan pie bits and brownies.
the Chocolate Chip Cookies are now my FAVORITE in the city.
They have this yummy layer of choco.goodness on the bottom and are soft and amazing. The pecan bits are great too... I will bring them to future events for sure!
I wish they were just a tad cheaper but you totally pay for what you get in this case. Awesome. -
Review from Dom L.
Good little bakery, only big negative is that they are closed on Sundays. I totally respect the whole day of rest thing, but retail shops have to be either pretty religious, pretty successful or pretty cocky to be closed on a weekend day.
I've always enjoyed the pastries here, and the focaccia here is delicious. I think they also discount some goods near closing time but don't quote me on that. Prices a tad high but considering the neighborhood, not unreasonable. -
Review from Fannie S.
I love their breads...they have great brioche (sweet and buttery), fantastic ciabatta (which I have used for pizzas, sandwiches, etc.), and great loaves of onion and cheddar, rosemary, olive, and other gourmet breads. So fresh! Good to just munch on, dip, or make sandwiches with.
And if you go around the winter holidays...he also makes fruitcake...no, not that brick you can throw, the Italian fruitcake (bread-y). Delicious.
The staff is so friendly! They also have morning pastries, and coffee. But I usually go after 6 p.m., which is when they have the buy one bread (or morning pastry), and go one free. Basically, you can get two huge loaves of bread for under $4!Listed in: Sweets and Starches!!!

Uh...all I can really say through the drooling and the "mmmm. soooo goood. MMMMM!!!" is: Chocolate Brioche.
Pretty fluted bottom rolls of fresh brioche, studded with dark chocolate chips. Really, if nothing else here is good, they're worth the five stars all on their own.
The almond croissants aren't half bad.
The olive bread is really good, especially for taking home and turning into sandwiches...
But do yourself a favor and try the chocolate brioche with a cup of coffee before you die. It is definitely on the list of things that will possibly definitely derail my attempts to get skinny after having a baby. -

Peach Pie baby!
Perhaps the yummiest peach pie I have ever tasted in my life! Thanks to the woman behind the counter who recommended it to me as I was about to pay for an apply pie. I brought it to a potluck and everyone loved it. It's funny but sometimes the peach pie works itself into my dreams...
I usually go in for some treats - cookies, pastries, and pie - all are usually really good. Specifically I like chocolate chip cookies, oatmeal cookies, snickerdoodles, croissants (esp the chocolate one!) and cream puffs. I know that Yelpers love the bread pudding but I've not been in the mood for that every time I've gone in. I'll be sure to try it next time and update my review.
The service is great and the neighborhood feel of this place makes me feel welcome. The prices are reasonable, the location has a little bit of seating, and parking is all on the street. Looking forward to my next visit so I can try the Mexican coffee, bread pudding, brownies, and brioche. -

I came here for lunch today after craving a really good sandwich and it just hit the spot! I had a turkey and cheddar cheese sandwich on their freshly baked french bread. Filled with a good amount of meat and topped off with mustard (you have your choice of mayo, mustard, or pesto), lettuce, and tomato, it was tasty and quite filling -- and I even split the sandwich with a friend! We got it toasted, so the mustard was warm, the cheese was nicely melted, and the bread was soft with a nice outer crunch.
For dessert, I tried a little bit of the carrot cake with cream cheese frosting. It was definitely one of the best carrot cakes I have eaten, and I'm a big fan of carrot cake! I also had one of their oatmeal cranberry cookies. Soooo good. It was soft and stuffed with dried cranberries.
They had free samples of their cheddar onion bread on the counter. It was so good, I might just have to get it the next time I go there! Light and fluffy, with little pieces of onion and a nice hint of cheddar cheese on the outer crust, you could definitely tell it was freshly baked!
I've been here a couple other times and I love sitting at the counter that faces out the window. Their staff is friendly and very helpful. Definitely one of my favorite places to grab lunch! Oh yeah, and their pies are amazing! -

Mm! This place is yummy. Their Bread Pudding is pretty tasty and they have a wide selection of breads. They have cheesecake brownies which are really good too. They serve Gelato which makes me pretty happy!
The staff are very friendly too, and sometimes, you'll get in some snobby West Portalite being rude to the staff that makes you shake your head in disapproval. (Last night, the poor girl behind the counter was trying to help a lady out. The lady told the owner that she didn't want her helping her and made the girl feel like crap because she couldn't identify the bread she wanted...this lady didn't have what was called 'tact". Joann and I shook our heads in disapproval at the lady's attitude) -

Even though the espresso is not good, I would come here because the breads and pastries are great... except the customer service is so seriously lacking to the point of being offensive.
I don't know what it is about me but I never understand people acting shocked about my appearance, especially when they are wearing outlandish makeup. I would think that would make us kindred spirits in some way - you know, different understands different.
I'm wrong.
Aloof I can deal with. Straight up rude, I cannot.
The older cashier woman with the amazingly technicolor eye liner mad dogged me so blatantly that you would think I'd taken a swing at her.
All I wanted was a latte.
Hmm.
Lame.
I got it anyway. To be polite.
It sucked. -

The 5 stars for this place are for the following items: the bread pudding, the amaretto cookie, and the mint chocolate cookie......all are so addicting, that you can't stop eating them unless you leave the friggin' store!!!! The bread pudding is perfect, the best that I have ever had with this amazing sauce, topped on the square piece of pudding........and the amaretto cookies and the mint chocolate cookies, I bought a bag and couldn't stop eating it........totally blew my Weight Watchers points for the week!!! But I really don't care.........I was that satisfied.
Note though that if you are looking for a huge selection there isn't. It's simple and basic but what you get there is wonderful..........

Oh no I am sad to say I was super disappointed this morning. I got a apple turnover/croissant thingie and seriously there were only 4 slices of apple in there, it was all pastry no apple!! The pastry was still good, but I was really looking forward to lots of apple filling and it was missing it. The worst part was that the pastry had the little hole for the pastry but they just didn't fill it up enough. My BF and father had the same experience with their apple pastries too. Rumor is that this place is under a new owner?? Maybe the new owner didn't learn the recipe for this pastry well?? Who knows, but now it's gone down to 4 stars in my book, just because I'm hoping the pudding and cookies have retained their quality!!
Updated June 23, 2007
Ok, so now they have alot more offerings to tempt you but today when I tried my tried and true bread pudding and the mint chocolate cookie, they were both not as good as they had been in previous visits. New ownership? Taste buds off today? Maybe they baker today wasn't on top of his game like he normally is? I don't know. I still loved my treats, just not as much as usual. -

We stopped in here for dessert, (we were exploring the neighborhood, after having dinner nearby.)
They had samples of a pastry on the counter. It think it was some kind of cinnamon twist-type thing. I liked it, but it was too buttery for me to eat a whole one.
We ended up getting a couple cookies to take home. The chocolate chip was awesome. It wasn't as good as my homemade ones, but it was pretty good. Lots of chocolate chips, and the texture was perfect. Soft and chewy...yum. Wish I had one right now...
The chocolate mint was ok, i probably wouldn't get it again. (I'd rather save my calories for the chocolate chip!) -

I love their assortment of bread. Their lunch sandwich is HUGE! But their service can really be better. The old lady just stand at the counter looking bored until you order.
Once I was there when a young girl was there chatting with a guy who was obviously just trying to get a date. She completely ignored me until another young man came up from the back after his lunch break.
Ugh, the price I pay for carbs. -

Definitely a decent bakery, and can't argue with it's convenient location. I like getting a French roll ($1.15) and munching on that. I've tried a couple of their other goods, which are just ok. Some are over priced (like the pecan tart).
If you're a fan of Mexican hot chocolate, I'd recommend trying theirs. It's great. -

This is my last addition, but has anyone ever tried their carrot cake?! HELLO, heaven! Light, with raisins and nuts and AMAZING cream cheese frosting...I wonder if there's any way they would just give me a wheel barrow of that stuff...it was delicious. This bakery makes the most tempting sweet treats in the neighborhood.
The pastries are wonderful, the hot cocoa is yummy and the focaccia pizza is a great cheap lunch!
