12 reviews for West Inn & Suites
We needed a little getaway and after reading all of the glowing reviews from fellow yelpers, I decided this was the place to stay. I can honestly say that the hotel was just as everyone had described it. Although our room was on the 2nd floor (the hotel has 3 floors) and the hotel is kid and pet friendly, our room was still very quiet.
While we weren't there to go to Legoland, (we did hit the Outlet shops), I'm sure that when we do decide to go (or decide we need another getaway), we'll be staying here again.
Disclaimers: This is my first bad hotel review ever. Maybe my first truly bad hotel trip in a long time.
Things they don't tell you before you stay at West Inn:
- Right next to the train... Runs all night... Blows horn all night....
- Rooms are FAR FROM SOUNDPROOF (with earplugs, still trains)
- Rooms don't have functioning blackout curtains
- Hotel is VERY kid friendly (a plus and a minus - no soundproofing)
- Beautiful views of HIGHWAY 5 and the POWER PLANT!
- Don't stay on the 2nd floor, because you can hear people above you
My wife has severe allergies and when we requested to have an additional synthetic comforter and pillows added to the room before we checked in, they instead just covered the down comforter with a synthetic one and then added an extra down one. This caused my wife's severe allergies to go crazy and a trip to the pharmacy for good antihistamines and then we found the second comforters under the synthetic one and tossed them all off... Unfortunately they are on the cheaper end and we ended up with down flaking in the air that didn't help her allergies either.
When I approached the hotel staff about the problems on two separate occasions: trains so loud that even with ear plugs we had a hard time getting any sleep, blackout curtains that don't black out as much as dim, and requested a room on the other side of the hotel (thinking this might make it better) we were told that we could have another King Suite on the same floor five rooms down on the same side. I was ultimately offered $10 off each night (after spending hundreds at the hotel's Bistro West and West Steakhouse - two good parts of the trip).
If you stay in Carlsbad, don't stay here. I don't know where to recommend because we really liked the great reviews also but the truth is far from the average reviews. No room service either. Oh, and apparently the GM isn't reachable on weekends since I was told I could pick up her card and email her later about the trip or fill out a comment card.
This is the place to stay if you are visiting Legoland with the kiddies.
It is located about a mile from Legoland and they have a free shuttle to bring you over there. This is the first time we've stayed at a place so kid-friendly. I hate to say it because I love my 5 star accommodations, but this family vacation was so fricking easy. Well, except for our baby crying each night at 4 am - but that's not the hotel's fault.
Since our king suite was on the first floor, we just rolled out of bed and puttered down the hall for our free hot breakfast every morning. The eating area has at least ten high chairs available and the four year-old loved being able to watch Cartoon Network while eating his cereal. My kids enjoyed playing with the board games and books in the library and they breathlessly awaited the warm cookies and milk every night served from 8 pm - 9 pm. Truth be told, the breakfast and cookies were mediocre at best, but I'm not complaining because the king suite only cost us ~$150/night.
The amenities inside the suite were nice - Aveda bath products, soft cushy bed, free Wi-Fi, empty mini fridge, etc. They guarantee the best rates on their own website so check there first. For a place inundated with kids and the occasional dog, this place is neat and tidy. If and when we return to Legoland, we are definitely returning here.
If there were any other reasons to stay in Carlsbad besides Legoland (or for shoppers, the outlets), I'm trying to think of an excuse to stay here again! A perfect little surprise amidst our family festivity filled holiday, we were welcomed to free parking, complimentary wireless, 'real' breakfast, & crib! Did I mention two KING beds!?! When you got two little kiddos that squirm in their sleep that is definitely an A in my book. Clean, modern, they even have that cinnamon-oh-man-it-smells-so-cozy in their holidays. Perfect stay for families w/children w/cookie & milk hour, board games & books in the "family" room aka off of the lobby area: leather sofas, flat screen & faux fireplace included.
Off to find out if they're a chain... =)
clean rooms
big beds
crisp linen
fluffy pillows
Aveda products in the bathroom (yes i'm a guy and yes i like smelling fresh and smooth, so what)
friendly staff
free milk and cookies at night!
free breakfast!!!!
this place is very nice. went here for a quick weekend getaway and was absolutely pleased. plus, it's close to the beach, places to eat, and if you're coming with your S.O., there are places to shop nearby.
thumbs up to this place
Wanted to do a quick weekend trip and with gas prices couldn't go very far.
Found this hotel on trip advisor (#1 hotel in carlsbad) and picked the west suite.
Location wise - everything is in close proximity. Went to outlet and beach while we were there.
Plenty of food places down the street (just take avenida encinas south to a claim jumper, marie callendars, in n out and mc ds)
Facilities were clean and very fragrant in the lobby!!!
Staff at the desk was friendly and eager.
Extra points for stocking aveda projects
Pillows and blankets were top quality and very comfortable.
Parking was never a problem and overall had a very cozy stay!
Breakfast brunch was standard. Nothing extraordinary but also nothing bad. I enjoyed a cup of yoplait yogurt with granola.
Cookies at night were also good!! The night we stayed there it was chewy and soft. You bring it back up to your hotel room with a cup of milk and have an excellent sleep.
Came here with my boyfriend but saw a lot of families prefer this place - rates are pretty good. ~ 200 / night for one of the large suites.
My family with two young boys really like this hotel. We stay here if we're going to Legoland and want to stay overnight. The web prices are decent. The room quality is excellent. It's easily at four star quality. I could tell that the attention to detail is there. I love how the tv's have dedicated inputs for use along with provided dvd players. My only beef with the rooms is that they don't have a door dividing the living room area from the bedroom. If it had the door, this place would be perfect.
The breakfast is actually pretty good with the typical eggs, bacon, waffles, fruit and what not. And they have coffee and water out in the lobby at all times. They also have freshly baked cookies every night. The pool is actually very nice. It's not huge, but it's great.
I love this place, just an hour and 45 minute drive from home. When my cousin and I got there (my cousin's name is Sexy, he's a Silky Terrier), they had a welcome sign right in front that says "Welcome Sexy & Pepe". OOOHHH!!! That's me, that's me. Right away I felt welcome :D. Our room was great, it was on the first floor, very close to the common area they have close to the food area. At night, they have free cookies for everyone, but not for me unfortunately because it's chocolate chip. They have free breakfast for humans, but that doesn't stop my mom to get me my share of eggs :p, and maybe croissant.
They provided my cousin and I each with Food Bowl and Water Bowl. The food bowl had treats in them !! :D AND, they had a bed for me!!! Very comfy bed :D.
If I have to go, I could just go out towards the side of the building and there's a well kept area for puppies, with bags and all. I was running up and down the green green grass. I had fun staying here :D. I will sure to comeback.
One of the nicest modern hotels I've been to for the price I paid. The service was excellent, they offered free yummy milk and cookies (chocolate with m&m's) at night, and complimentary hot breakfast (not your typical individually wrapped muffins that you can get at Costco - I'm talking scrambled eggs, sausages, fresh fruit, hot chocolate, etc).
There's free wi-fi, a business center where you can print things out, fax, use the computer if you don't have your own laptop, and for $75 more a night, you can even bring your pet. Now, that's what I'm talkin about!!!
Moreover, the beds are extremely comfortable - you can fall asleep in no time, the tv's are huge, and the bathrooms...don't even get me started on how sweet they are. I think they're travertine tile and it's never bad when they offer Aveda products for your use. The rooms are decently sized, and it's all dark wood furniture mixed with steel products to evoke that contemporary look. Overall, I loved it here. If for any reason I'm back in Carlsbad, I'm heading here for rest and relaxation.
The atmosphere here is superb and the staff is super friendly. They allow dogs, which is awesome, and their restaurants are so chic and the food is delicious! Free parking, a West gas station with great prices nearby, close proximity to the beach, Carlsbad Outlet Mall, and Legoland... what more could you want?
This is a fairly new hotel - decorated w/ the standard dark wood, modern interior that typically appeal to men.
What I love: they take dogs - and cater to them!
The room was clean and orderly - oh, and free breakfast. =)
This place is pretty good, and great if you have kids. At first I was not impressed as the hotel in in between I 5 and the train track - really! But the inside of the hotel is quite nice. High quality furnishings, comfortable beds, quiet rooms, DVD players in every room ,etc.
There is a free breakfast, but I thought it was only ok. For kids the best thing is the pool and the living room/eating area. Everyone hangs out at 8pm when they serve milk and cookies (which are good).
They also have a free shuttle and LEGOland is only 2 miles away - take the shuttle and save the $10 parking fee.
Recommend highly for familes. Also only a 12 minute walk to the beach.
Note: we forgot a battery charger the room and they found it and FedExed it to us.
