Even though they got our order wrong (they gave us bacon instead of sausage) the combo, bacon, pineapple, and mushrooms, worked. We ordered pizza because it was past midnight and we were in need of comfort food. We used the Berkeley Good Life coupon for Late Night orders (remember it's mandatory delivery, booo).  They delivered it within half an hour--very timely in my pizza delivery experience. Then omg, the pizza, the cheesy breads. There were two whole pies for just the two of us.

The pizza crust here is great. It has some parm in it I do believe. The cheesy bread should only be eaten when warm to hot! It tastes divine with their ranch dip and every now and then their tangy/salty/marinara-y marinara dip. The ranch is super good though and I don't even like ranch!

I'm really sad I only found out about WCP late night delivery awesome deal so late in the game-I'm leaving Berkeley soon. :( So hopefully you guys will try them out at least once.

The pizza also reheats VERY well. Don't microwave it please! Get a pan, put some aluminum on it, set the oven to 350 degrees F, and let it bake and reheat for around 8-10 minutes. You will love how it reheats I guarantee. ;)

mmm... college food haha. I went back recently just for the cheesysticks when I visited the bay area for the memorial weekend. Those things are still so addicting... but... only when they're warm and fresh... once they get cold...

The rest of the food isn't that great... way too salty and there are way too many other options.

What happened to West Coast Pizza?

I've been living in Berkeley for 13 years and WCP had become my favorite delivery place. They had great deals and their pizza reminded me of what I lived on during college on back in the Midwest.

About a year ago, I went on a health kick, and stopped ordering delivery pizza. But just the other night there was a little poker game going on and we decided to order.

I immediately went to the WCP website, which is just a giant graphic hosted on somebody's Mac user account (as listed above). But when I called, I found that all of their prices had gone up by about $2.00 from what's listed on that menu.

I guess they're trying to create a new website, which you find at http://westcoastpizza.com. It looks like another giant graphic (which is currently not loading) and then the daily specials in regular text, where you can see that the prices have gone up. (Come on guys, we're in Berkeley...Even the 90-year-old lady on the bus can code basic HTML.)

OK, so the prices have gone up by $2.00 in a year, but at least the pizza will hit the spot.

But wait? Is it just my imagination or are these pizza boxes tiny? I ordered the special with two regular pizzas and unless my perception has changed since I started eating more veggies (which is a possibility) these boxes look like smalls. And sure enough, the pizzas inside are cute little miniature versions of the regular pizzas I remember. OK, so it's possible that I'm mis-remembering the sizes of their regular pizzas. Maybe they always were this small.

But then I took a bite.

Still super salty, but where's the sauce? Why is it so much greasier than I remember? It's just saturated with grease. Even the pizza that was all veggies is oozing oil.

And the pizza itself is browned and almost burnt around the edges. Sometimes I would get pizzas like this from the old WCP, and it really doesn't bother me too much, but what the heck...The bottoms are undercooked and soggy! How can you have a nearly burnt pizza on top that 's soggy and doughy on the bottom?

It's pretty sad, but ultimately it doesn't change much for me or for WCP, since I wasn't planning on ordering from them again for other reasons. But I certainly would not recommend this pizza, except for the fact that they are one of the few places I know of that deliver, and this is a college town.

This is the best pizza I've had out here. Made better by the Brazillians behind the counter, who remember me when I wonder in around 10 on Monday nights.

Especially that Alessandra. She's so cute. Oh wait, I'm reviewing the food, not the waitstaff, right?

Well, the food is spectacular. I'm pretty easy regarding pizza -- just a medium-thickness, soft crust, with cheese. West Coast never overloads on the cheese. Nor is their crust ever burnt.

This place doesn't simply survive based on student specials and a large student population with tight budgets.  It's actually pretty good.

I would almost give them a high 3, but the convenience and their excellent salad bumped them up.  There's no other pizza joint I've ever visited with a better salad.

This place used to be Gumby's Pizza, then it had a short-lived stint as Crusty's (marketer was obviously a genius) until it later became West Coast.

The crust went from one of the worst if not the worst in the area to extremely good, the best in the area (for mass market pizza).  Just excellent.

This place is take-out, delivery only.  Delivery service has varied over the 10 years or so and at least 80 deliveries I've gotten from them.  On a busy night, you might actually have to wait more than an hour.  If you ask for extra sauce for breadsticks (recommended), they used to forget about 90 percent of the time and still charge you.  If you called to complain, they always either sent someone with the sauce or gave you 5 bucks off your next purchase (much more than the value of the sauce).  My general experience is that they're gradually gotten their act more together.

They're very convenient as they're open late and take credit cards.  They will often be willing to take an order at 1:30 a.m., particularly on weekends.

For value, I recommend the daily special or what used to be called the Gumby Jone's, 2 medium 2 topping pizzas for like 13.99.  There's stiffer competition now, but it wouldn't shock me if their prices improved in response.

Ingredients are fresh and a little more plentiful than other pizza joints.  They also have a tasty mixed greens salad, but will frequently forget and give you bleu cheese when you ask that it not be included on your salad.

The quality of the pizza is clearly above average, easily beating pizza hut and similar types of places.  They also have nice grilled sandwiches.

The wings are sub-par so I'd skip those, but otherwise they have a pretty nice menu.

They hire better than average delivery drivers in terms of both competence and friendliness.

A nice, solid three stars.

So why bother reviewing? I wanted to point out a few things.

The pizzas are nice and solid. If you're looking for something in a pinch, and want delivery, this is one of your better options.

They let you substitute toppings. I got the garlic veggie (white sauce, veggies, feta and mozzarella cheese) and they let me put sun-dried tomatoes instead of olives, without charging me extra.

The cheesy bread was pretty good, but not great. It's something I'll eat, even when I'm not really hungry. But I just wasn't feeling it.

I think that's because I don't like ranch sauce, and ordered them w/ marinara sauce instead. Most of the reviews that rate the cheesy bread really highly recommend it with ranch sauce. It may be a unique flavor combination, but alone or with marinara sauce, they're just average.

The don't deliver to your door, but call you to come out to their car. Not a big deal, and not factored into the number of stars I gave this place, but that might be useful to someone out there.

This is someplace I'll order from perhaps twice a year, a little more than Domino's or Round Table.

It was a little on the expensive side, but not too bad.

We've been going here every now and then for a while now, and they've just recently raised their prices.  Not a big deal.  The big problem was when I tried to use a coupon that said "Valid Anytime"- AAANK, too bad!  Since they've raised prices, they no longer honor those coupons - don't print "Anytime" then!  The owner's also decided not to give a discount for picking up orders anymore.  What they do give is a 15 minute "guarantee" when you pick up.  Fine, okay, we ordered.

I get there 15 minutes later, the guy tells me it's coming right out, so I gave him my credit card.  He swipes, I sign, he goes back somewhere, I wait...where is it?  Now it's been over 20 minutes, where's my pizza?  All I can see is this guy that's wolfing down chicken wings right next to the person making pizzas.  Maybe he's on his break, but I hope he's not gonna build any pizzas with those slobbery fingers!  The worse part was, when I got home, our pizzas weren't even done all the way - soggy bottoms, the cheese held up better than the crusts.  Bummer, I'm all for locally owned and operated, but not false advertising from liars and shysters  :(

It's around $13 for a regular sized special pizza, so you'll want to check out one of the daily deals.

West Coast pizza warm: pretty good.  West Coast pizza cold: pretty bad.  I don't know why that is, it just is.  Saving a couple dollars by picking it up is pretty awesome, but if you need it delivered, they're faster and much more reliable than the other Berkeley picks.

The special pizzas are pretty good, with the Cordon Bleu and Chicken Tomato being the winners.  If you build your own to take advantage of one of the daily specials, I recommend chicken, artichoke heart, and garlic sauce, or spicy sausage, jalapeno, and ricotta.  I've done the fat kid math, and those are the combinations that you want.

Tip big, get treated well, repeat.

Food:
-The Godfather
-The Garlic Vegetarian
-The Pesto Antipasto

All three were pretty good. Normally I don't like pizza because I tend to think it is too greasy, cheesy, or heavy, but I didn't feel that way about these pizzas as all. But if I were to compare them to Extreme Pizza, Zachary's or Cheeseboard, then this place doesn't seem as good, but if I'm just assessing the pizza from here without comparing it, then it's pretty good.

My only complaint is that I felt like they didn't pack on enough ingredients because I like my pizzas toppling off with ingredients on top and it just looked a little bare. But that's all. I would definitely not mind coming back here again.

Definitely worth it for the pizza.  Delivery has been on-time and reliable in four tries.

Only concern:  the tasty hot wings seem to definitely be of the hormone-pumped, Food Inc. warning variety, which personally I couldn't stomach.  Wings were the size of chicken breasts and the drumsticks had muscles in them I didn't know chickens had.

Wow don't even bother coming to this place the manager is rude she really doesn't care about the costumers. She was very rude to the driver and then to me! I've ordered pizzas to be delivered, but your better off ordering an hour in advance because that's about how long you'll be waiting. When I decided to pick-up the pizza myself the manager gave me an attitude the entire time because she said it would be ready in 10minutes, so I show up at 20 minutes. To my suprise the pizza wasn't ready so I asked her if its  busy on a tuesdays from the eyerolling and attitude began. The cheese sticks are good but nothing you can't find anywhere else.

Great pizza, especially for parties. Everyone loves those cheese sticks!!

However, what the fuck is wrong with your drivers??!! Why do they insist on calling my cell phone claiming they're here when they haven't even gotten onto my street yet.?This is seriously part of the West Coast Pizza ritual every time and drives me insane. Don't call me until you're actually here, assholes!! Or at least wait until you're parking!! How slow do you think I am?? It's pretty fucking annoying to wait outside (sometimes in the rain) for an extended period when you could have easily just called me a few minutes later. Also, sometimes these jerks don't even come to my door. I've had to cross the street in the rain on multiple occasions because the driver is too lazy to park and walk across the street.

Also, what is up with your absolutely heinous policy that if I don't answer my phone you dont deliver my pizza (yes, this has happened to me)?

5 stars for pizza
0 stars for service

(I'm not averaging that out to 2.5 stars though because those greasy, heavely cheese sticks outweigh all complaints)

Oh goddd, getting late night delivery from this place is inevitable after a night of boozing (Charles L. and I can attest).  We had a pile of at least 8 empty pizza boxes during the last month of school.

Pizza and cheesy sticks are hands down greasy.  To enjoy your pizza, you must:
1) eat ASAP before the grease solidifies or
2) be drunk so you don't realize the grease

They have a good variety of specialty pizzas to choose from.  They also have sweet daily deals that get you more pizza/food for less money.  Don't look online for their deals because they are wrong.  Call in and listen to the recording to find out!

Quality of the pizza = 3 stars
The not-so-good wings + size of the pizza compared to price = -1 star

Total stars: 2

We came to this place because it was close to home, we got $2 off for picking it up, and we read some pretty good reviews here.

We were really expecting a delicious thin and CRISPY pizza, and instead our pizza was more on the soggy side.  The pizza was good (we got the Deluxe), but just too pricey.

The hot wings were anything but hot. Not even remotely spicy.

If there was some great promotion going on or I had coupons I'd probably come again.

I am a huge fan of West Coast Pizza - they are very cost effective and their pizza is quite good. The best time to order is Fridays, when you can get 2 large 3-topping pizzas for only $19.95. Personally, my favorites are the Ultimate Cheese, All Meat Massacre and Cordon Bleu specials.

They also really are good for groups. I order for group meetings quite frequently, and usually can feed 30 or so people for under $100, delivered directly to the meeting.

I've actually never been to west coast's actual store, we always got delivery at least almost once a week when I was an undergrad.

The cheese sticks are AWESOME

Plenty of vegetarian options and the pizza deals are pretty good.

Favorite pizza: Sun-dried tomatoes, red onions and garlic sauce.

Decently priced and late nite delivery.  Usually comes within 30 minutes or less unless its a gameday, then expect to wait over an hour or two.

They have good deals on a daily basis.

We ordered their tuesday special which was two 2 topping pizzas and bread sticks for 20$

Pizzas were good, we liked the dough. Kinda looks like pizza hut pizza, but this pizza tastes WAY better.

The bread sticks were kinda disappointing though. They didnt really have any flavor, and the dipping sauce didnt do any justice. The only reason i got them was because of someone elses review saying how amazing they weren't great. They werent bad, just didnt have any flavor.

If you feel like overloading on unhealthiness get any of their meat specials. Pretty much every unhealthy meat you can get on a pizza, but damn is it good.

I USED to order from here all the time, and I would give them more stars if they were what they used to be.

I used to LOVE their hot wings (seriously the best) until they changed management and their hot wings just aren't the same anymore!!

Their cheesy sticks are good but not great, and same with their pizza. Too bready for me, and not enough toppings, blah.

Customer service-wise, they aren't that good. Last time I ordered from them their hot wings changed and we asked for another order because we thought they got it wrong on their end. In order for us to get a replacement order, we had to send the food back, wtf? We also got a soda and they delivered the wrong soda. After much calling back-and-forth and argument and a visit from the pizza guy 3x, we finally ended up with their so-called hot wings and a cup of Tabasco sauce. This was when I figured out they didn't make our hot wings wrong--they just changed the recipe and thought they could replace it with some Tabasco......... NOT. Since then, my roommates and I had been so disappointed with this experience that we never ordered from them again.

Cover your eyes, foodie fans (all five of you...)!

I don't even have West Coast programmed in my phone, just get me drunk and I'll shout "841-WEST!" on repeat until the number is called.  Don't get pizza, don't get salad, and don't get hot wings...Just. Get. Cheesy Stix.  With extra ranch for dipping.  All that dairy goodness reminds me of how grateful I am just to have inherited the Asian glow, not the lactose allergy.  O West Coast how I love thee!

I've saved the $2 and picked up a few times but wouldn't really recommend it.  Going there was kind of like learning about Santa Claus...Just accept the glory and don't ask any questions.

At 10pm I'm hungry, and obviously not selective enough because my choice to give my money to West Coast Pizza was an embarrassing point of weakness that ultimately ended in me going to sleep with a rumbling tummy.  Read about this place on yelp, the cheese sticks sounded good the prices were reasonable... if only I knew.

Ordered the food (I'm very good at expressing exactly what I want in a clear and concise manner, I even repeat the important things back twice) a large (LARGE) pepperoni pizza and cheese sticks. Asked for extra (EXTRA) Parmesan cheese (I'm a feen for  grated cheese) three times and even offered to pay extra for the mass amount of cheese packets that I wanted. Told her my apartment number and was done. Or so I thought.

With a $2 dollar delivery charge I also included a generous tip, the guy hung outside my gates until my boyfriend had to go outside and guide him in like a child. The guy called from his cell phone twice mumbling something and when I tried to answer he hung up on me!  So we got a SMALL (10 or 11 in) pizza, not a large and NO Parmesan cheese, the guy said he was going to call his boss and to wait so we stepped inside and he just left! With his tip of course, because he really deserved it. I called the girl who took my order and described the conversation we had 45 minutes ago. She claimed that she didn't know what I was talking about, after some choice words on my part I hung up.

If you want soggy pizza (no Parmesan cheese in the world could have fixed it) and horrible service, West Coast is the place to go.

GREAT late-nite pizza spot.   Especially the ones using the tomato sauce.   They used to share a kitchen with Little Chicago, which served specialty deep dish rivaling the quality of Zachary's.

Anyhow, my cousin and I found West Coast through the yellow pages, it's one of the few places that used to be open at 2 a.m. in the morning AND did deliveries to North Berkeley at that hour (I think since that time back in '98, the hours have been amended, they might only be open until 1 a.m. so call first and check).

Man the crust was so doughy I thought I was eating Domino's.

The sauce is just Hunt's tomato paste and the cheese falls off all the slices when you pick them up.

I ordered the cheese sticks because the reviews raved about them. Those sucked! What are people thinking? It was just a cheeze pizza without the sauce!

I'm not really a pizza person. BUT I crave West Coast's cheese sticks. West Coast blessed us with what God created on the 8th day: cheese sticks. Delicious, cheesy, crispy, amazing, perfect cheese sticks. These are NOT your normal cheese sticks. If you are thinking of Dominos, or fried little pencil shaped cheese sticks, WRONG! These cheese sticks are actually in the form of a pizza...but there is just cheese, and delicious garlic, and whatever other kind of magic goes into this creation. These sticks are perfect any time of the day: breakfast, lunch, dinners, snacks, hangovers, bridal showers, book club gatherings, Christmas dinner etc etc. I could go on and on. I am so sad that West Coast isn't in my area now, because I would probably be obese and soo soo happy! These are crave worthy so make sure if you live in the Berkeley/Oakland area, you try these delicious creations, and you might as well order a large because you will eat it (or your friends will), and if you don't eat them all, then please mail them to me. Thx!

Apparently this is a must have if you live in Berkeley. There is a deal on large orders where when you order 3 of most things (at large size), you pay for each item at regular price. This applies to pizza, cheesticks and whatever. There are also wings available. They offer specials each day of the week so check it out. They also have a website.

Anyway, they deliver and say that if you pick it up you'll save $2. I guess so. But then again, you could have someone deliver your food.

While the pizza is just alright, the cheesy sticks are fucking amazing.  Also, since West Coast PIzza doesn't deliver to Oakland AND refuses to let you pick up the pizza, it's always a fun adventure to give them some random Berkeley address and intercept the driver.  Here's my latest experience:

Me:  Can I have 2 orders of cheesy sticks?  Oh, and do you deliver in Oakland? (hoping they expanded their delivery services)

WCP: No, sorry

Me: Please?

WCP: haha, sorry...

Me: that's okay, we're in berkeley anyway (total lie)

So I gave them Paul's address and decided to drive over there.  In the meantime, we got delayed because nobody wanted to pee in the bar, so we stopped off at my place.  We realized West Coast Pizza would beat us and wake Paul's landlord, so we called them back.

Paul: Yeah...we just placed an order, but we're stuck in traffic, so we're not home yet (it was 1:40 AM, obviously no traffic)

Everyone in the car was snickering and saying "haha, he said we're stuck in traffic" in the same tone that  the Half Baked crew uses when they say "haha, he said ice cream" when Mary Jane gives them a ride home.

Anyway, we finally get to Paul's house just a couple minutes before West Coast Pizza.  What must the driver have thought?  Paul and Gorb were standing on the sidewalk to intercept the driver as he approached the residence.  They did the cash pizza exchange, got back in my car, and then we drove back to Oakland to eat cheesy sticks and watch bollywood.

1998 --

I live in Unit 3, Ida Sproul, Floor 1 of the UCB campus.  It's midnight and all the floormates are congregated in the floor lounge, shit-faced from Mickey's malt liquor, and hungry.  We are too lazy to venture out.

Someone finds a coupon for cheesy sticks at West Coast Pizza, and each of us chips in $2 to make it happen.  Those greasy, greasy sticks that get the cardboard soaking bring us to an equally satiated state, complete with ranch and marinara sauce.  We order them twice a week.

I owe my Freshman Thirty to West Coast Pizza and don't regret it one bit.

2007 --

I am a late-20s professional living and working in San Jose, but I make an occasional trip to the East Bay to lounge with friends and then crash at my sister's place in Lake Merritt.

One day a group of us go to Lucky Lounge, and in its aftermath discuss our growing hunger.  The number "510-841-WEST" instantly pops into my head, and everyone gets all bright-eyed and bushy-tailed remembering their visits to my dorm and partaking of the joyous cheesy sticks.

Alas, West Coast Pizza does not deliver outside of Berkeley, nor does it allow pick-up after a certain time.  We call in with a random Berkeley address and intercept the driver outside, then zip off back to Oakland (see Anjali K's review below).

No doubt, I will have many more adventures with West Coast Pizza in the years to come.

Used to be called "Gumby's Pizza," and we ordered pizza from there all the time because they were open late and did delivery to Clark Kerr Campus.

And besides pizza- get what used to be called "pokey sticks"- a giant pizza dough wheel deep-fried.  It comes with salad dressing for dipping; it's awesomely bad for you.

From the stories I've heard from people who've worked delivery jobs there, the place is run completely like a criminal enterprise; they even have a different phone as "Chicago Pizza" for their deep-dish orders.  Same place, kids!

The pizza here is good, really good, but the thing that keeps me coming back are the cheese sticks...

If you order a pizza then you get cheese sticks for only $5.95 (reg. price is $8.85) and cheese sticks are big, they are like another entire pizza minus the red sauce, smothered in cheese and garlic butter...so greasy good.

Try the Cordon Bleu pizza (garlic sauce, chicken and ham).  The regular is about 6 pieces and big enough for 2-3 people, 4 if you get the cheese sticks.

The chicken wings are pretty good too, nice and spicy and you get a pound which is about 8-9 for only $6.35 when you order a pizza.

The only bad part is that they are take-out only, no place to sit and enjoy the delicious pizza creations, which means I usually start eating on the drive home.

I'm hooked on Cheesy Sticks!  Thanks, Danny & Carlos... for the extra 10 lbs.!  Seriously though, thanks for introducing me to these - wow, they're tasty!

It was definitely worth the 15 minute drive at 2am!  (don't get excited...they don't allow pick up after 10pm...i'm just special - hehe)

The best part is that they provide plenty of both Ranch dressing and marinara sauce.  Alternating is highly recommended.

West Coast Pizza has saved us so many night when we were wayyyy to drunk to go out and eat. It's always been our go-to place every time we get hungry late at night. Maybe it's because I've always eaten West Coast Pizza when I'm drunk but I really like this place.

Went ahead to order some west coast pizza after hearing all the fuzz about the cheesestick here. Meh, nothing special. Cheesy? Not really; maybe people here said so only because Berkeley is overpopulated by organic-loving health-freaks hippie shit and/or anorexic Asian petites.

now that's not the killer. The pizza is absolute shit. I can make better pizza at home using Safeway dough; and I'm a fresh off the plane Asian, so that says something....

I ordered the ole' boring pepperoni+sausage+mushroom, and pineapple+ham+spicy sausage.  Should be safe right? No! Fuck me.
Their so-called sausage is laughable. I don't know if you can even call it sausage. I mean, WTF? They look like some boogies freshly-plucked from my snoring nose. In fact, my boogies probably have more flavor than those tiny tids bits of shits. Move on to the other pizza.....I don't know where they get their pineapples, but they manage to taste worse than any brand of canned pineapple. The spicy sausage is overbaked and burnt on the sides. Well, at least they are, by definition, spicy.

oh, and I just found a lonely piece of black olive sticking on the side of my crust.

Thanks, West Coast. You officially ended my recent crave for pizza.

Epic shit.

Disgusting.  But in a good way.
I can only eat it with extra cheese.

When there is extra cheese, the cheese has a way of spilling over the sides and crisping up around the edges of the crust.

But the crust is like doughy, fatty white bread.  What helps to make it more palatable is dipping the whole gooey mess into some ranch dressing (which they'll serve you on the side).

It's cheap and greasy (in a bad way).  But it does go well with TV and beer for those nights when you are full of self-loathing.

Um... but a $2 delivery charge.  I feel so exploited.
I've been eating this for over 10 years.
When the cheesy sticks were still called pokey sticks.

Take that as you may.
