So...I feel pretty crummy about what I'm about to write...

I'm not a mean person, but right now I feel like a castmember of It's Always Sunny, circa the "Bums-Making A Mess All Over the City" episode...but I have certain olfactory standards that must be met by any establishment. And the West Chester Public Library, even though it is adorable in it's Victorian-style trappings, and has a decent selection of books & an adequate selection of dvds, is overrun with unwashed, unkempt bums. Bums are allowed to read too!! I encourage it!! But geezus, take your books elsewhere. Especially in the winter, it gets pretty uncomfortable in the lower depths where the fiction section is located.

The Exton library has a better selection too, imo. But it's in my neighborhood and I have a soft spot for it. I just wish the bums of West Chester would ...sigh, I don't know. Go take a shower at the shelter!!! I feel awful.

Let me temper my embarrassment by saying that the library is very accommodating in getting books in from different branches, and everyone who works there has always been very pleasant. They are working to rid the library of the more offensive olfactory offenders.

History

Established in 1872

At first WCPL rented space.  In the 1880's Hannah Darlington, 411 N Church St, donated part of her property for a library building.  The cornerstone was laid July 4, 1887; the building, designed by T. Roney Williamson, was dedicated Feb. 1888.  Stained-glass windows were installed March 1888.
In 1916 a wing was added for the children's department.
Early on, funding for the library come from donations and entertainments.  In the early 1900's the Borough of WC agreed to contribute to the library's operating funds. That contribution still forms the largest single share of the library's income.  State, county and other municipal funding also supports WCPL.  The balance of the operating budget comes from grants, fundraising and donations.
The WCPL is a true community library.  People come to this library precisely because of its character, because it is part of a small town, and because they have formed an attachment to the physical aspect of the library, its building.
